  • ubuntu 8.04lts + rdiff-backup: Should I install from source instead of using apt repositories?

    - by egarcia
I'm trying to use rdiff-backup in order to make backup copies of some folders inside an Ubuntu 8.04LTS server. I'm attempting to do the backup on another server with a more modern Ubuntu distro (9.10). I'll call this one the "client". rdiff-backup needs to be installed on both the client and the server. It is available on the apt repositories on both machines, so I installed it using sudo apt-get install rdiff-backup. The problem is that the version installed on the server is older than the one on the client (1.1.15 vs 1.2.8). Thus I get errors when I try do make them work together. So I need both versions to be the same. What is the standard procedure in these cases? Should I attempt to upgrade the version on the server, or downgrade the version on the client? And how whould I do that? In case it is useful, I'd like to point out that the rdiff-backup apt-package has some dependencies - librsync1 & python-support Attaching the errors I got in case they help: rdiff-backup egarcia@test::/var/rails/ohwr/backup /home/kikito/backup/files Warning: Local version 1.2.8 does not match remote version 1.1.15. • Live Camera capturing and printing software

    - by Matt
I'm running a Haunted House exhibit at my school to raise money, and I had the idea of taking pictures of the "victims"/students remotely with my Sony DSLR camera and then printing and selling the photos as the students exit the haunted House (much like amusement parks do with roller coasters as you go down the final drop, or when one takes pictures with Santa Claus at the mall). Does anyone know of any free/relatively inexpensive software that would allow me to do this? I would prefer Mac-compatibility, but it's not a requirement.

  • In-Place DC Upgrade from Server 2003R2 Standard to 2008 Enterprise

    - by Yadhu Tony
We have a Domain controller in server 2008 Enterprise and Additional DC in server 2003 R2. Now I need to upgrade Additional Domain controller to Server 2008 Enterprise and raise the domain functional level to 2008. The DC is running with Active Directory, DNS and DHCP. The server is installed in VMware ESXi 4.0. Please guide me to carry out the upgrade. Also I want to know about the possible risk of in-place upgrade, if any.

  • How can I connect to a mail server using SMTP over SSL using Python?

    - by jakecar
Hello, So I have been having a hard time sending email from my school's email address. It is SSL and I could only find this code online by Matt Butcher that works with SSL: import smtplib, socket version = "1.00" all = ['SMTPSSLException', 'SMTP_SSL'] SSMTP_PORT = 465 class SMTPSSLException(smtplib.SMTPException): """Base class for exceptions resulting from SSL negotiation.""" class SMTP_SSL (smtplib.SMTP): """This class provides SSL access to an SMTP server. SMTP over SSL typical listens on port 465. Unlike StartTLS, SMTP over SSL makes an SSL connection before doing a helo/ehlo. All transactions, then, are done over an encrypted channel. This class is a simple subclass of the smtplib.SMTP class that comes with Python. It overrides the connect() method to use an SSL socket, and it overrides the starttles() function to throw an error (you can't do starttls within an SSL session). """ certfile = None keyfile = None def __init__(self, host='', port=0, local_hostname=None, keyfile=None, certfile=None): """Initialize a new SSL SMTP object. If specified, `host' is the name of the remote host to which this object will connect. If specified, `port' specifies the port (on `host') to which this object will connect. `local_hostname' is the name of the localhost. By default, the value of socket.getfqdn() is used. An SMTPConnectError is raised if the SMTP host does not respond correctly. An SMTPSSLError is raised if SSL negotiation fails. Warning: This object uses socket.ssl(), which does not do client-side verification of the server's cert. """ self.certfile = certfile self.keyfile = keyfile smtplib.SMTP.__init__(self, host, port, local_hostname) def connect(self, host='localhost', port=0): """Connect to an SMTP server using SSL. `host' is localhost by default. """ # MB: Most of this (Except for the socket connection code) is from # the SMTP.connect() method. • Python script is exiting with no output and I have no idea why

    - by Adam Tuttle
I'm attempting to debug a Subversion post-commit hook that calls some python scripts. What I've been able to determine so far is that when I run post-commit.bat manually (I've created a wrapper for it to make it easier) everything succeeds, but when SVN runs it one particular step doesn't work. We're using CollabNet SVNServe, which I know from the documentation removes all environment variables. This had caused some problems earlier, but shouldn't be an issue now. Before Subversion calls a hook script, it removes all variables - including $PATH on Unix, and %PATH% on Windows - from the environment. Therefore, your script can only run another program if you spell out that program's absolute name. The relevant portion of post-commit.bat is: echo -------------------------- >> c:\svn-repos\company\hooks\svn2ftp.out.log set SITENAME=staging set SVNPATH=branches/staging/wwwroot/ "C:\Python3\python.exe" C:\svn-repos\company\hooks\svn2ftp.py ^ --svnUser="svnusername" ^ --svnPass="svnpassword" ^ --ftp-user=ftpuser ^ --ftp-password=ftppassword ^ --ftp-remote-dir=/ ^ --access-url=svn://10.0.100.6/company ^ --status-file="C:\svn-repos\company\hooks\svn2ftp-%SITENAME%.dat" ^ --project-directory=%SVNPATH% "staging.company.com" %1 %2 >> c:\svn-repos\company\hooks\svn2ftp.out.log echo -------------------------- >> c:\svn-repos\company\hooks\svn2ftp.out.log When I run post-commit.bat manually, for example: post-commit c:\svn-repos\company 12345, I see output like the following in svn2ftp.out.log: -------------------------- args1: c:\svn-repos\company args0: staging.company.com abspath: c:\svn-repos\company project_dir: branches/staging/wwwroot/ local_repos_path: c:\svn-repos\company getting youngest revision... done, up-to-date -------------------------- However, when I commit something to the repo and it runs automatically, the output is: -------------------------- -------------------------- svn2ftp.py is a bit long, so I apologize but here goes. I'll have some notes/disclaimers about its contents below it. #!/usr/bin/env python """Usage: svn2ftp.py [OPTION...] FTP-HOST REPOS-PATH Upload to FTP-HOST changes committed to the Subversion repository at REPOS-PATH. Default: 21 -r, --ftp-remote-dir=DIR The remote directory that is expected to resemble the repository project directory -a, --access-url=URL This is the URL that should be used when trying to SVN export files so that they can be uploaded to the FTP server -s, --status-file=PATH Required. This script needs to store the last successful revision that was transferred to the server. PATH is the location of this file. -d, --project-directory=DIR If the project you are interested in sending to the FTP server is not under the root of the repository (/), set this parameter. Example: -d 'project1/trunk/' This should NOT start with a '/'. 2008.5.2 CKS Fixed possible Windows-related bug with tempfile, where the script didn't have permission to write to the tempfile. Replaced this with a open()-created file created in the CWD. 2008.5.13 CKS Added error logging. Added exception for file-not-found errors when deleting files. 2008.5.14 CKS Change file open to 'rb' mode, to prevent Python's universal newline support from stripping CR characters, causing later comparisons between FTP and SVN to report changes. Let sleeping dogs lie, right? The username and password for get_login are currently hard-coded (but correct) just to eliminate variables and try to change as little as possible at once. (I added the svnuser and svnpass arguments to the existing argument parsing.) So that's where I am. I can't figure out why on earth it's not printing anything into svn2ftp.out.log. If you're wondering, the output for one of these failed attempts in svn2ftp.debug.log is: 2012-09-06 15:18:12,496 INFO svnftp.start 2012-09-06 15:18:12,496 INFO svnftp.done And it's no different on a successful run. So there's nothing useful being logged. I'm lost. I've gone way down the rabbit hole on this one, and don't know where to go from here. Any ideas?

  • Showing support for Movember 2012

    - by Christian
Somehow, I managed to miss Movember last year but this year I’m lined-up to grow an outrageous moustache for charity. Movember is a global movement which aims to raise awareness of men’s health and supports prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.  On the 1st of November hundreds of thousands of men around the world will start a journey to grow and groom a moustache for the 30 days of November becoming walking, talking billboards for men’s health. I’ll also be parading my Mo’s progress in Seattle next week during the SQL PASS Summit so be sure to look out for me and show some support! If you’d like to give a donation to support this worthy cause you can visit my Mo Space by clicking on the logos where you’ll also find more details about Movember and where the money goes. Finally, if you’re a Coeo employee, customer, or partner and you’d like to join the Coeo Mo Bro Team drop me an email and I’ll sign you up! Thanks for your support! • How come many project-hosting sites doesn't have a forum feature?

    - by george
I'm considering starting an open-source project, so I shopped around some popular project hosting sites. What I find surprising is that many (see here for a nice feature table) of the popular project hosting sites (e.g. GitHub, BitBucket) don't have a forum feature, i.e. a place where users can talk to the devs, ask questions, raise ideas, etc. IMHO an active forum is an important factor in creating a user community around a project, so I would expect that most project owners would be interested in such a feature. I've also noticed that some projects do have support forums (or mailing lists) hosted elsewhere - e.g. Ruby on Rails is hosted on GitHub but has a Google Groups support group, and TortoiseHG is hosted on BitBucket but has a mailing list on SourceForge - so it's not like this feature is unneeded. So how come many project hosting sites don't have a forum feature?

  • Roo gem .xlsx files performance problems [closed]

    - by alvaritogf
    I am getting unacceptable performace problems by using the roo gem for reading a file by using XLSX or XLS library from this gem. Someone may suggest me an alternative about how to parse an .XLSX file? parsed_file = Excel.new(filename,false, :ignore) if (file_format.upcase == "XLS") parsed_file = Excelx.new(filename,false, :ignore) if (file_format.upcase == "XLSX") raise t "#{filename} is not an Excel file!" if (!parsed_file) parsed_file.default_sheet = parsed_file.sheets[0]#'Sheet2'#oo.sheets[1] first_row = parsed_file.first_row last_row = parsed_file.last_row first_column = parsed_file.first_column last_column = parsed_file.last_column #logger.info "#### Total Rows:#{last_row}, first_row:#{first_row}, last_row:#{last_row}, first_column:#{first_column}, last_column:#{last_column}" first_row.upto(last_row) do |current_line| # Stuff .... end Thanks

  • Is gstreamer the best encoder for vorbis or is there a better encoding engine I should use?

    - by sayth
I have sound juicer installed and I want to rip to vorbis.ogg. Is gstreamer the best encoder for vorbis or is there a better encoding engine I should use. The default gstreamer profile is audio/x-raw-float,rate=44100,channels=2 ! vorbisenc name=enc quality=0.5 ! oggmux I am going to raise the quality to 0.7 but thats all nothing if gstreamer isn't the best encoder. Any suggestions for high quality ripping? Edit: a good answer to this will also be the top search result in google for "best vorbis encoding engine". Double Edit: It appears oggenc itself is the best encoder which rules out using sound juicer to rip cd's as it uses gstreamer. I have installed oggenc and am testing the command ripper abcde. Found a good configuration for it here oggenc config for abcde

  • Debugging "Premature end of script headers" - WSGI/Django [migrated]

    - by Marcin
I have recently deployed an app to a shared host (webfaction), and for no apparent reason, my site will not load at all (it worked until today). It is a django app, but the django.log is not even created; the only clue is that in one of the logs, I get the error message: "Premature end of script headers", identifying my wsgi file as the source. I've tried to add logging to my wsgi file, but I can't find any log created for it. Is there any recommended way to debug this error? I am on the point of tearing my hair out. My WSGI file: import os import sys from django.core.handlers.wsgi import WSGIHandler import logging logger = logging.getLogger(__name__) os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = 'settings' os.environ['CELERY_LOADER'] = 'django' virtenv = os.path.expanduser("~/webapps/django/oneclickcosvirt/") activate_this = virtenv + "bin/activate_this.py" execfile(activate_this, dict(__file__=activate_this)) # if 'VIRTUAL_ENV' not in os.environ: # os.environ['VIRTUAL_ENV'] = virtenv sys.path.append(os.path.dirname(virtenv+'oneclickcos/')) logger.debug('About to run WSGIHandler') try: application = WSGIHandler() except (Exception,), e: logger.debug('Exception starting wsgihandler: %s' % e) raise e

  • Clarification about Event Producer in StreamInsight

    - by sandy
I need a small clarification about streamInsight, I know by doc's that StreamInsight can handle multiple concurrent Events. But will the event producer be a separate function, for ex: I need to watch a folder for new Files becoz all my sensors il write readings every day in a new file in particular drive. Method 1: FileSystemWatcher: These is the traditional approach where we write a service using FileSystemWatcher to watch a folder for new files,etc.. Upon receiving event from FileSystemWatcher il perform some operations on these files. How to do these using streamInsight??? I came know that using IObservable i can push events to StreamInsight. But is there anything to watch folder is sreamInsight like FileSystemWatcher. OR In order to raise events to streamInsight do we need to use FileSystemWacther? Any suggestion regarding these is highly appreciated. Thank in Advance

  • Testing with Profiler Custom Events and Database Snapshots

We've all had them. One of those stored procedures that is huge and contains complex business logic which may or may not be executed. These procedures make it an absolute nightmare when it comes to debugging problems because they're so complex and have so many logic offshoots that it's very easy to get lost when you're trying to determine the path that the procedure code took when it ran. Fortunately Profiler lets you define custom events that you can raise in your code and capture in a trace so you get a better window into the sub events occurring in your code. I found it very useful to use custom events and a database snapshot to debug some code recently and we'll explore both in this article. I find raising these events and running Profiler to be very useful for testing my stored procedures on my own as well as when my code is going through official testing and user acceptance. It's a simple approach and a great way to catch any performance problems or logic errors.

  • What defines good developer culture? [closed]

    - by Sven
We are a team of 6 people developing applications for mobile devices (Android & iOS). In our company, which consists of many teams responsible for "classic" software development, business intelligence, virtualization, hardware, etc., we are kind of a small startup because we were the first to use agile methods like Scrum and we are open to new technologies and methods. Also our team is pretty young with me being the oldest with 30 years. We would like to further raise productivity and motivation and thus are currently collecting points which make up a good developer/hacker culture and which may be improved in our team/company. This can be points that we can either improve ourselves or have to pass on to management. I would like to know what in your opinion defines good, modern developer culture? What does developer culture consists of? For example is it clearly defined career opportunities geeky office benefits like trips to extraordinary conferences like WWDC or Google I/O ...

  • Pointless Code In Your Source

    - by Ali
I've heard stories of this from senior coders and I've seen some of it myself. It seems that there are more than a few instances of programmers writing pointless code. I will see things like: Method or function calls that do nothing of value. Redundant checks done in a separate class file, object or method. if statements that always evaluate to true. Threads that spin off and do nothing of note. Just to name a few. I've been told that this is because programmers want to intentionally make the code confusing to raise their own worth to the organization or make sure of repeat business in the case of contractual or outsourced work. My question is. Has anyone else seen code like this? What was your conclusion was to why that code was there? If anyone has written code like this, can you share why?

  • Annual Review: what hard data should a developer bring?

    - by sunpech
Many companies have annual reviews for their employees. I've heard that it's generally a good idea to muster up some hard data to analyze and bring to the review. The better the data, the better the chances to help support a promotion or raise. What I mean by hard data, are tangible numbers-- something that can be measured and/or calculated. Obviously data that a developer would have access to. Something intangible would be how beautiful the code a developer has written. I think this would be very hard to measure, nor would upper management care for it. My question is: For a software developer, what kind of hard data should be analyzed and brought to a review to help highlight good work that was done? An example I've been given in the past: The support tickets produced by each project a developer was involved in. Are the numbers low? Are the rate per month getting lower? Etc.

  • Teaching programming (languages) in central/northern Europe

    - by canavanin
I hope this question is not going to be off-topic; in case you think there'd be a better place to ask it, please let me know. Anyway, I'm currently doing my PhD working in bioinformatics. I would, however, like to turn away from academia eventually and instead go into teaching programming or, preferably, programming languages (e.g. Perl, which feels like my "mother tongue"...) - not as a school teacher, but with a company (in Germany or Scandinavia). It'll take me another one to one and a half years to complete my PhD, so I would like to know how I could/should use that time to raise my chances of getting into the profession I'd be interested in. Are there any Perl certificates I should aim to obtain, for example? In case there's anything that comes to mind when reading this, please let me know. Thanks a lot in advance!

  • Digikam: What's the problem?

    - by Unapiedra
I installed Digikam by using the Philip5-PPA. When I run it I get the error below. This is by running it through gdb: Starting program: /usr/bin/digikam /usr/bin/digikam: error while loading shared libraries: libcxcore.so.2.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [Inferior 1 (process 29894) exited with code 0177] What should I do to find the error and fix it? I can see that somehow libcxcore.so.2.1 is wanted but not found. Is this an error of the PPA, or can I simply point it in the right direction? Can I raise an issue with the PPA creator through launchpad? Some next steps would be quite helpful.
