  • IPhone iOs 5, need help getting my tab bar at the top to work

    - by Patrick
    I wanted to have the tab bar at the top. So i created a new project in XCode. Added a view and then inside that view i added (scrollbar, text and another view). See picture. What i wanted was to have my tab bar at the top. Then in the middle would be the contents from the tab bar and below it a small copyright text. See picture. No idea how to make this correctly. I have tried to create the UITabBarController on the fly and then assign it into the view at the top. (Top white space on the picture dedicated for the tab bar). Here is my code to init the MainWindow. MainWindow.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @class Intro; @interface MainWindow : UIViewController @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIScrollView *mainContentFrame; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIView *mainTabBarView; @property (strong, nonatomic) UITabBarController *mainTabBar; @property (nonatomic, strong) Intro *intro; // Trying to get this tab to show in the tab bar @end MainWindow.m #import "MainWindow.h" #import "Intro.h" @interface MainWindow () @end @implementation MainWindow @synthesize mainContentFrame = _mainContentFrame; @synthesize mainTabBarView = _mainTabBarView; @synthesize mainTabBar = _mainTabBar; @synthesize intro = _intro; - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]; if (self) { // Custom initialization } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad { _intro = [[Intro alloc] init]; NSArray *allViews = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:_intro, nil]; [super viewDidLoad]; // Do any additional setup after loading the view. _mainTabBar = [[UITabBarController alloc] init]; [_mainTabBar setViewControllers:allViews]; [_mainTabBarView.window addSubview:_mainTabBar.tabBarController.view]; } - (void)viewDidUnload { [self setMainTabBar:nil]; [self setMainContentFrame:nil]; [self setMainContentFrame:nil]; [super viewDidUnload]; // Release any retained subviews of the main view. } - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait); } @end What am i missing to get this to work? Wanted the content to end up in the scrollview so that all tabs are scrollable.

  • chained selects with one table

    - by Owen
    I know I am going about this in an unusual way, every tut I've seen uses multiple tables, but due to the way the rest of my site works I would like to create a chained select which operates using a single table. My table structure is: ---------------------- |Catagory|SubCategory| |01|cat1 |subcat1 | |02|cat1 |subcat2 | |03|cat2 |subcat1 | |04|cat2 |subcat2 | ---------------------- The code I have so far looks like: <tr> <td class="shadow"><strong>Category:</strong> </td> <td class="shadow"> <select id="category" name="category" style="width:150px"> <option selected="selected" value="<?php echo $category ?>"><?php echo $category?></option> <?php include('connect.php'); $result1 = mysql_query("SELECT DISTINCT category FROM categories") or die(mysql_error()); while($row = mysql_fetch_array( $result1 )) { $category = $row['category']; echo "<option value='". $row['category'] ."'>". $row['category'] ."</option>"; } ?> </select> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="shadow"><strong>Sub Category:</strong> </td> <td class="shadow"> <select id="sub_catgory" name="sub_category" style="width:150px;"> <option selected="selected" value="<?php echo $sub_category ?>"><?php echo $sub_category ?></option> <?php include('connect.php'); $result2 = mysql_query("SELECT sub_category FROM categories WHERE ") or die(mysql_error()); while($row = mysql_fetch_array ($result2 )){ echo "<option value='" . $row['sub_category'] . "'>". $row['sub_category']. "</option>"; } ?> </select> </td> </tr> On the second select I am not sure how to state the WHERE clause. I need it to display the subcategories which have the same category as selected in the first select. PART 2 how would I include AJAX in this to preload the data so i don't need to refresh the page. Could someone either help me finish what I've started here or point me to a good tutorial. thanks

  • Update single field

    - by 47
    I have a Customer class which has a representative field....this field is initially blank but when the user opens up the details page of the chosen customer, they'll be given the open of representing this customer by clicking on a link. The template layout I was thinking of is this: <strong>Representative: </strong> {% if customer.representative %} {{ customer.representative }} {% else %} <a href="{% url representCustomer customer.id %}">Represent this customer.</a> {% endif %} All that remains is the view to effect this...this is where I'm stuck.

  • SOLVED mwfeedparser integrating in my app gives EXC_BAD_ACCESS (code=1, address=0xa0040008)

    - by Pranoy C
    SOLVED- Got it! The problem was that since I am creating the DoParsingStuff *parseThisUrl object in the viewDidLoad method, it's scope was only within that method. So after the method finished, the object got deallocated. I changed it to an instance variable instead and now it works. It gives a different error but that it an entirely different issue. Issue was: I have been struggling with trying to integrate the mwfeedparser library in my app for parsing RSS and ATOM feeds. It throws a gives EXC_BAD_ACCESS error which I can't seem to troubleshoot. //My Class looks like - My interface looks like: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "MWFeedParser.h" #import "NSString+HTML.h" @protocol ParseCompleted <NSObject> -(void)parsedArray:(NSMutableArray *)parsedArray; @end @interface DoParsingStuff : NSObject<MWFeedParserDelegate> @property (nonatomic,strong) NSMutableArray *parsedItems; @property (nonatomic, strong) NSArray *itemsToDisplay; @property (nonatomic,strong) MWFeedParser *feedParser; @property (nonatomic,strong) NSURL *feedurl; @property (nonatomic,strong) id <ParseCompleted> delegate; -(id)initWithFeedURL:(NSURL *)url; @end //And Implementaion: #import "DoParsingStuff.h" @implementation DoParsingStuff @synthesize parsedItems = _parsedItems; @synthesize itemsToDisplay = _itemsToDisplay; @synthesize feedParser = _feedParser; @synthesize feedurl=_feedurl; @synthesize delegate = _delegate; -(id)initWithFeedURL:(NSURL *)url{ if(self = [super init]){ _feedurl=url; _feedParser = [[MWFeedParser alloc] initWithFeedURL:_feedurl]; _feedParser.delegate=self; _feedParser.feedParseType=ParseTypeFull; _feedParser.connectionType=ConnectionTypeAsynchronously; } return self; } -(void)doParsing{ BOOL y = [_feedParser parse]; } # pragma mark - # pragma mark MWFeedParserDelegate - (void)feedParserDidStart:(MWFeedParser *)parser { //Just tells what url is being parsed e.g. http://www.wired.com/reviews/feeds/latestProductsRss NSLog(@"Started Parsing: %@", parser.url); } - (void)feedParser:(MWFeedParser *)parser didParseFeedInfo:(MWFeedInfo *)info { //What is the Feed about e.g. "Product Reviews" NSLog(@"Parsed Feed Info: “%@”", info.title); //self.title = info.title; } - (void)feedParser:(MWFeedParser *)parser didParseFeedItem:(MWFeedItem *)item { //Prints current element's title e.g. “An Arthropod for Your iDevices” NSLog(@"Parsed Feed Item: “%@”", item.title); if (item) [_parsedItems addObject:item]; } - (void)feedParserDidFinish:(MWFeedParser *)parser {//This is where you can do your own stuff with the parsed items NSLog(@"Finished Parsing%@", (parser.stopped ? @" (Stopped)" : @"")); [_delegate parsedArray:_parsedItems]; //[self updateTableWithParsedItems]; } - (void)feedParser:(MWFeedParser *)parser didFailWithError:(NSError *)error { NSLog(@"Finished Parsing With Error: %@", error); if (_parsedItems.count == 0) { //self.title = @"Failed"; // Show failed message in title } else { // Failed but some items parsed, so show and inform of error UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Parsing Incomplete" message:@"There was an error during the parsing of this feed. Not all of the feed items could parsed." delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"Dismiss" otherButtonTitles:nil]; [alert show]; } //[self updateTableWithParsedItems]; } @end //I am calling this from my main viewcontroller as such: #import "DoParsingStuff.h" @interface ViewController : UIViewController <ParseCompleted> .... //And I have the following methods in my implementation: DoParsingStuff *parseThisUrl = [[DoParsingStuff alloc] initWithFeedURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://www.theverge.com/rss/index.xml"]]; parseThisUrl.delegate=self; [parseThisUrl doParsing]; I have the method defined here as- -(void)parsedArray:(NSMutableArray *)parsedArray{ NSLog(@"%@",parsedArray); } //I stepped through breakpoints- When I try to go through the breakpoints, I see that everything goes fine till the very last [parseThisUrl doParsing]; in my delegate class. After that it starts showing me memory registers where I get lost. I think it could be due to arc as I have disabled arc on the mwfeedparser files but am using arc in the above classes. If you need the entire project for this, let me know. I tried it with NSZombies enabled and got a bit more info out of it: -[DoParsingStuff respondsToSelector:]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x6a52480 I am not using release/autorelease/retain etc. in this class...but it is being used in the mwfeedparser library.

  • Anatomy of a .NET Assembly - CLR metadata 1

    - by Simon Cooper
    Before we look at the bytes comprising the CLR-specific data inside an assembly, we first need to understand the logical format of the metadata (For this post I only be looking at simple pure-IL assemblies; mixed-mode assemblies & other things complicates things quite a bit). Metadata streams Most of the CLR-specific data inside an assembly is inside one of 5 streams, which are analogous to the sections in a PE file. The name of each section in a PE file starts with a ., and the name of each stream in the CLR metadata starts with a #. All but one of the streams are heaps, which store unstructured binary data. The predefined streams are: #~ Also called the metadata stream, this stream stores all the information on the types, methods, fields, properties and events in the assembly. Unlike the other streams, the metadata stream has predefined contents & structure. #Strings This heap is where all the namespace, type & member names are stored. It is referenced extensively from the #~ stream, as we'll be looking at later. #US Also known as the user string heap, this stream stores all the strings used in code directly. All the strings you embed in your source code end up in here. This stream is only referenced from method bodies. #GUID This heap exclusively stores GUIDs used throughout the assembly. #Blob This heap is for storing pure binary data - method signatures, generic instantiations, that sort of thing. Items inside the heaps (#Strings, #US, #GUID and #Blob) are indexed using a simple binary offset from the start of the heap. At that offset is a coded integer giving the length of that item, then the item's bytes immediately follow. The #GUID stream is slightly different, in that GUIDs are all 16 bytes long, so a length isn't required. Metadata tables The #~ stream contains all the assembly metadata. The metadata is organised into 45 tables, which are binary arrays of predefined structures containing information on various aspects of the metadata. Each entry in a table is called a row, and the rows are simply concatentated together in the file on disk. For example, each row in the TypeRef table contains: A reference to where the type is defined (most of the time, a row in the AssemblyRef table). An offset into the #Strings heap with the name of the type An offset into the #Strings heap with the namespace of the type. in that order. The important tables are (with their table number in hex): 0x2: TypeDef 0x4: FieldDef 0x6: MethodDef 0x14: EventDef 0x17: PropertyDef Contains basic information on all the types, fields, methods, events and properties defined in the assembly. 0x1: TypeRef The details of all the referenced types defined in other assemblies. 0xa: MemberRef The details of all the referenced members of types defined in other assemblies. 0x9: InterfaceImpl Links the types defined in the assembly with the interfaces that type implements. 0xc: CustomAttribute Contains information on all the attributes applied to elements in this assembly, from method parameters to the assembly itself. 0x18: MethodSemantics Links properties and events with the methods that comprise the get/set or add/remove methods of the property or method. 0x1b: TypeSpec 0x2b: MethodSpec These tables provide instantiations of generic types and methods for each usage within the assembly. There are several ways to reference a single row within a table. The simplest is to simply specify the 1-based row index (RID). The indexes are 1-based so a value of 0 can represent 'null'. In this case, which table the row index refers to is inferred from the context. If the table can't be determined from the context, then a particular row is specified using a token. This is a 4-byte value with the most significant byte specifying the table, and the other 3 specifying the 1-based RID within that table. This is generally how a metadata table row is referenced from the instruction stream in method bodies. The third way is to use a coded token, which we will look at in the next post. So, back to the bytes Now we've got a rough idea of how the metadata is logically arranged, we can now look at the bytes comprising the start of the CLR data within an assembly: The first 8 bytes of the .text section are used by the CLR loader stub. After that, the CLR-specific data starts with the CLI header. I've highlighted the important bytes in the diagram. In order, they are: The size of the header. As the header is a fixed size, this is always 0x48. The CLR major version. This is always 2, even for .NET 4 assemblies. The CLR minor version. This is always 5, even for .NET 4 assemblies, and seems to be ignored by the runtime. The RVA and size of the metadata header. In the diagram, the RVA 0x20e4 corresponds to the file offset 0x2e4 Various flags specifying if this assembly is pure-IL, whether it is strong name signed, and whether it should be run as 32-bit (this is how the CLR differentiates between x86 and AnyCPU assemblies). A token pointing to the entrypoint of the assembly. In this case, 06 (the last byte) refers to the MethodDef table, and 01 00 00 refers to to the first row in that table. (after a gap) RVA of the strong name signature hash, which comes straight after the CLI header. The RVA 0x2050 corresponds to file offset 0x250. The rest of the CLI header is mainly used in mixed-mode assemblies, and so is zeroed in this pure-IL assembly. After the CLI header comes the strong name hash, which is a SHA-1 hash of the assembly using the strong name key. After that comes the bodies of all the methods in the assembly concatentated together. Each method body starts off with a header, which I'll be looking at later. As you can see, this is a very small assembly with only 2 methods (an instance constructor and a Main method). After that, near the end of the .text section, comes the metadata, containing a metadata header and the 5 streams discussed above. We'll be looking at this in the next post. Conclusion The CLI header data doesn't have much to it, but we've covered some concepts that will be important in later posts - the logical structure of the CLR metadata and the overall layout of CLR data within the .text section. Next, I'll have a look at the contents of the #~ stream, and how the table data is arranged on disk.

  • Cannot import the following keyfile: blah.pfx. The keyfile may be password protected.

    - by JasonD
    We just upgraded our Visual Studio 2008 projects to VS2010. All of our assemblies were strong signed using a Verisign code signing certificate. Since the upgrade we continuously get the following error: Cannot import the following key file: companyname.pfx. The key file may be password protected. To correct this, try to import the certificate again or manually install the certificate to the Strong Name CSP with the following key container name: VS_KEY_3E185446540E7F7A This happens on some developer machines and not others. Some methods used to fix this that worked some of the time include: re-installing the key file from Windows Explorer (right click on the PFX file and click Install) installing VS2010 on a fresh machine for the first time prompts you for the password the first time you open the project, and then it works. On machines upgraded from VS2008, you don't get this option. I've tried using the SN.EXE utility to register the key with the Strong Name CSP as the error message suggests, but whenever I run the tool with any options using the version that came with VS2010, SN.EXE just lists its command line arguments instead of doing anything. This happens regardless of what arguments I supply. Does anyone know WHY this is happening, and have clear steps to fix it? I'm about to give up on Click Once installs and Microsoft Code Signing. Thanks for any help!

    I am styling a Wordpress theme but has run into problem with IE7. The first word("it") inside the paragraph/strong tag ends up to the left of the img tag when I want it BELOW the image. My problem is that the only element I can change CSS properties here is the div, since the code inside is posted with a WYSIWYG by an blog author. Is there anyway i can fix this problem? I have tried lots of different settings and every other browser FF safari IE8 renders the text below the image. <div style="width: 430px;"> <h1>It is hard getting it right in IE7!</h1> <p> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4333" src="http://xxx.xxx.xx/files/2010/03/xxx.jpg" alt="xxx" style="width: 430px; height: 600px" /> <strong>It is hard</strong> getting it right in IE7! </p> </div>

  • Completely bizarre Firefox CSS bug

    - by Jason
    I've been doing front end development for a long time, and I have NEVER come across a bug like this before... Save the following HTML to a file and view it in Firefox (mine is 3.6.3): <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <style type="text/css"> body { font-family: Helvetica, Sans-Serif;} h2 {font-weight: normal;} </style> </head> <body> <h2>Some normal text <strong>some bold text</strong> weird huh?</h2> </body> </html> If you don't want to give it a shot the output is like your cat walked across your keyboard while character map was turned on, except in the strong tags. I feel like this may be a font issue? When I get rid of font-weight: normal it goes back to normal, but I don't want everything to be bolded in my h2... Anyone have any ideas? More importantly, is anyone able to reproduce this?? Thanks.

  • Some Async Socket Code - Help with Garbage Collection?

    - by divinci
    Hi all, I think this question is really about my understanding of Garbage collection and variable references. But I will go ahead and throw out some code for you to look at. // Please note do not use this code for async sockets, just to highlight my question // SocketTransport // This is a simple wrapper class that is used as the 'state' object // when performing Async Socket Reads/Writes public class SocketTransport { public Socket Socket; public byte[] Buffer; public SocketTransport(Socket socket, byte[] buffer) { this.Socket = socket; this.Buffer = buffer; } } // Entry point - creates a SocketTransport, then passes it as the state // object when Asyncly reading from the socket. public void ReadOne(Socket socket) { SocketTransport socketTransport_One = new SocketTransport(socket, new byte[10]); socketTransport_One.Socket.BeginRecieve ( socketTransport_One.Buffer, // Buffer to store data 0, // Buffer offset 10, // Read Length SocketFlags.None // SocketFlags new AsyncCallback(OnReadOne), // Callback when BeginRead completes socketTransport_One // 'state' object to pass to Callback. ); } public void OnReadOne(IAsyncResult ar) { SocketTransport socketTransport_One = ar.asyncState as SocketTransport; ProcessReadOneBuffer(socketTransport_One.Buffer); // Do processing // New Read // Create another! SocketTransport (what happens to first one?) SocketTransport socketTransport_Two = new SocketTransport(socket, new byte[10]); socketTransport_Two.Socket.BeginRecieve ( socketTransport_One.Buffer, 0, 10, SocketFlags.None new AsyncCallback(OnReadTwo), socketTransport_Two ); } public void OnReadTwo(IAsyncResult ar) { SocketTransport socketTransport_Two = ar.asyncState as SocketTransport; .............. So my question is: The first SocketTransport to be created (socketTransport_One) has a strong reference to a Socket object (lets call is ~SocketA~). Once the async read is completed, a new SocketTransport object is created (socketTransport_Two) also with a strong reference to ~SocketA~. Q1. Will socketTransport_One be collected by the garbage collector when method OnReadOne exits? Even though it still contains a strong reference to ~SocketA~ Thanks all!

  • Interpreting java.lang.NoSuchMethodError message

    - by Doog
    I get the following runtime error message (along with the first line of the stack trace, which points to line 94). I'm trying to figure out why it says no such method exists. java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.sun.tools.doclets.formats.html.SubWriterHolderWriter.printDocLinkForMenu( ILcom/sun/javadoc/ClassDoc;Lcom/sun/javadoc/MemberDoc; Ljava/lang/String;Z)Ljava/lang/String; at com.sun.tools.doclets.formats.html.AbstractExecutableMemberWriter.writeSummaryLink( AbstractExecutableMemberWriter.java:94) Line 94 of writeSummaryLink is shown below. QUESTIONS What does "ILcom" or "Z" mean? Why there are four types in parentheses (ILcom/sun/javadoc/ClassDoc;Lcom/sun/javadoc/MemberDoc;Ljava/lang/String;Z) and one after the parentheses Ljava/lang/String; when the method printDocLinkForMenu clearly has five parameters? CODE DETAIL The writeSummaryLink method is: protected void writeSummaryLink(int context, ClassDoc cd, ProgramElementDoc member) { ExecutableMemberDoc emd = (ExecutableMemberDoc)member; String name = emd.name(); writer.strong(); writer.printDocLinkForMenu(context, cd, (MemberDoc) emd, name, false); // 94 writer.strongEnd(); writer.displayLength = name.length(); writeParameters(emd, false); } Here's the method line 94 is calling: public void printDocLinkForMenu(int context, ClassDoc classDoc, MemberDoc doc, String label, boolean strong) { String docLink = getDocLink(context, classDoc, doc, label, strong); print(deleteParameterAnchors(docLink)); }

  • How do I programmatically insert rows into a Silverlight DataGrid without binding?

    - by j0rd4n
    I am using a common Silverlight DataGrid to display results from a search. The "schema" of the search can vary from query to query. To accommodate this, I am trying to dynamically populate the DataGrid. I can set explicitly set the columns, but I am having trouble setting the ItemSource. All of the MSDN examples set the ItemSource to a collection with a strong type (e.g. a Custom type with public properties matching the schema). The DataGrid then uses reflection to scour the strong type for public properties that will match the columns. Since my search results are dynamic, I cannot create a strong type to represent what comes back. Can I not just give the DataGrid an arbitrary list of objects so long as the number of objects in each list matches the number of columns? Anyone know if this is possible? I would like to do something similar to this: List<List<object>> myResults = <voodoo that populates the result list> myDataGrid.ItemsSource = myResults;

  • Sharing same properties of ViewController for iPhone Stroryboard and iPad Story Board

    - by Ruhul Amin
    I'm developing a universal application. in the first view, I have the login screen for the user. In iPhone storyBoard, I have added 2 text field and one button( login check). I have added properties in ViewController.h file by dragging those objects(Ctrl key + Dragg) to .h file. I have added code for login check and it is working fine for iPhone. This is the code in ViewController.h @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UITextField *txtUserId; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UITextField *txtUserPwd; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIButton *btnLogin; In the iPad storyBoard, I have added 2 text field( userid and password) and i button for login. So now, I want to bind those objects with the veriable which I declared already in ViewController.h file in case of iPhone. My questions: 1. What is the right way to bind properties for both storyboard? 2. Am I on the right direction or should I think in a different way to do it? I am new with iPhone development. Please help. Thanks. --Amin

  • How can I work out if a date is on or before today?

    - by Yvonne
    My web application consists of library type system where books have due dates. I have the current date displayed on my page, simply by using this: date_default_timezone_set('Europe/London'); $date = date; print $date("d/m/Y"); I have set 'date' as a variable because I'm not sure if it makes a difference when I use it in the IF statement you're about see, on my library books page. On this page, I am simply outputting the due dates of the books, many have dates which have not yet reached todays date, and others which have dates greater than todays date. Basically, all I want is the due date to appear bold (or strong), if it has passed todays date (the system displayed date). This is what I have and thought would work: <? if ($duedate < $date) { echo '<td><strong>'; } else { echo '<td>'; } ?> <?php echo $date('d/m/Y', $timestamp);?></strong></td> I have declared $timestamp as a var which converts the date of default MySQL format to a UK version. Can anyone help me out? I thought this would've been very straight forward!

  • Creating a Simple C# Wrapper to clean up code

    - by Tangopop
    I have this code: public void Contacts(string domainToBeTested, string[] browserList, string timeOut, int numberOfBrowsers) { verificationErrors = new StringBuilder(); for (int i = 0; i < numberOfBrowsers; i++) { ISelenium selenium = new DefaultSelenium("LMTS10", 4444, browserList[i], domainToBeTested); try { selenium.Start(); selenium.Open(domainToBeTested); selenium.Click("link=Email"); Assert.IsTrue(selenium.IsElementPresent("//div[@id='tabs-2']/p/a/strong")); selenium.Click("link=Address"); Assert.IsTrue(selenium.IsElementPresent("//div[@id='tabs-3']/p/strong")); selenium.Click("link=Telephone"); Assert.IsTrue(selenium.IsElementPresent("//div[@id='tabs-1']/ul/li/strong")); } catch (AssertionException e) { verificationErrors.AppendLine(browserList[i] + " :: " + e.Message); } finally { selenium.Stop(); } } Assert.AreEqual("", verificationErrors.ToString(), verificationErrors.ToString()); } My problem is i would like to make it so that i can use the code surrounding the 'try' many many times in the rest of the code. I think it has something to do with wrappers, but i can't get a simple answer for this from the web. So in simple terms the only piece of this code which changes is the bit between the try {} the rest is standard code that i have currently used over 100 times and is turning out to be a pain to maintain. Hope this is clear, many thanks.

  • How to create a timer the right way?

    - by mystify
    I always have an class which needs to set up a timer for as long as the object is alive. Typically an UIView which does some animation. Now the problem: If I strongly reference the NSTimer I create and invalidate and release the timer in -dealloc, the timer is never invalidated or released because -dealloc is never called, since the run loop maintains a strong reference to the target. So what can I do? If I cant hold a strong ref to the timer object, this is also bad because maybe I need a ref to it to be able to stop it. And a weak ref on a object is not good, because maybe i'm gonna access it when it's gone. So better have a retain on what I want to keep around. How are you guys solving this? must the superview create the timer? is that better? or should i really just make a weak ref on it and keep in mind that the run loop holds a strong ref on my timer for me, as long as it's not invalidated?

  • Creating a dynamic, extensible C# Expando Object

    - by Rick Strahl
    I love dynamic functionality in a strongly typed language because it offers us the best of both worlds. In C# (or any of the main .NET languages) we now have the dynamic type that provides a host of dynamic features for the static C# language. One place where I've found dynamic to be incredibly useful is in building extensible types or types that expose traditionally non-object data (like dictionaries) in easier to use and more readable syntax. I wrote about a couple of these for accessing old school ADO.NET DataRows and DataReaders more easily for example. These classes are dynamic wrappers that provide easier syntax and auto-type conversions which greatly simplifies code clutter and increases clarity in existing code. ExpandoObject in .NET 4.0 Another great use case for dynamic objects is the ability to create extensible objects - objects that start out with a set of static members and then can add additional properties and even methods dynamically. The .NET 4.0 framework actually includes an ExpandoObject class which provides a very dynamic object that allows you to add properties and methods on the fly and then access them again. For example with ExpandoObject you can do stuff like this:dynamic expand = new ExpandoObject(); expand.Name = "Rick"; expand.HelloWorld = (Func<string, string>) ((string name) => { return "Hello " + name; }); Console.WriteLine(expand.Name); Console.WriteLine(expand.HelloWorld("Dufus")); Internally ExpandoObject uses a Dictionary like structure and interface to store properties and methods and then allows you to add and access properties and methods easily. As cool as ExpandoObject is it has a few shortcomings too: It's a sealed type so you can't use it as a base class It only works off 'properties' in the internal Dictionary - you can't expose existing type data It doesn't serialize to XML or with DataContractSerializer/DataContractJsonSerializer Expando - A truly extensible Object ExpandoObject is nice if you just need a dynamic container for a dictionary like structure. However, if you want to build an extensible object that starts out with a set of strongly typed properties and then allows you to extend it, ExpandoObject does not work because it's a sealed class that can't be inherited. I started thinking about this very scenario for one of my applications I'm building for a customer. In this system we are connecting to various different user stores. Each user store has the same basic requirements for username, password, name etc. But then each store also has a number of extended properties that is available to each application. In the real world scenario the data is loaded from the database in a data reader and the known properties are assigned from the known fields in the database. All unknown fields are then 'added' to the expando object dynamically. In the past I've done this very thing with a separate property - Properties - just like I do for this class. But the property and dictionary syntax is not ideal and tedious to work with. I started thinking about how to represent these extra property structures. One way certainly would be to add a Dictionary, or an ExpandoObject to hold all those extra properties. But wouldn't it be nice if the application could actually extend an existing object that looks something like this as you can with the Expando object:public class User : Westwind.Utilities.Dynamic.Expando { public string Email { get; set; } public string Password { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public bool Active { get; set; } public DateTime? ExpiresOn { get; set; } } and then simply start extending the properties of this object dynamically? Using the Expando object I describe later you can now do the following:[TestMethod] public void UserExampleTest() { var user = new User(); // Set strongly typed properties user.Email = "[email protected]"; user.Password = "nonya123"; user.Name = "Rickochet"; user.Active = true; // Now add dynamic properties dynamic duser = user; duser.Entered = DateTime.Now; duser.Accesses = 1; // you can also add dynamic props via indexer user["NickName"] = "AntiSocialX"; duser["WebSite"] = "http://www.west-wind.com/weblog"; // Access strong type through dynamic ref Assert.AreEqual(user.Name,duser.Name); // Access strong type through indexer Assert.AreEqual(user.Password,user["Password"]); // access dyanmically added value through indexer Assert.AreEqual(duser.Entered,user["Entered"]); // access index added value through dynamic Assert.AreEqual(user["NickName"],duser.NickName); // loop through all properties dynamic AND strong type properties (true) foreach (var prop in user.GetProperties(true)) { object val = prop.Value; if (val == null) val = "null"; Console.WriteLine(prop.Key + ": " + val.ToString()); } } As you can see this code somewhat blurs the line between a static and dynamic type. You start with a strongly typed object that has a fixed set of properties. You can then cast the object to dynamic (as I discussed in my last post) and add additional properties to the object. You can also use an indexer to add dynamic properties to the object. To access the strongly typed properties you can use either the strongly typed instance, the indexer or the dynamic cast of the object. Personally I think it's kinda cool to have an easy way to access strongly typed properties by string which can make some data scenarios much easier. To access the 'dynamically added' properties you can use either the indexer on the strongly typed object, or property syntax on the dynamic cast. Using the dynamic type allows all three modes to work on both strongly typed and dynamic properties. Finally you can iterate over all properties, both dynamic and strongly typed if you chose. Lots of flexibility. Note also that by default the Expando object works against the (this) instance meaning it extends the current object. You can also pass in a separate instance to the constructor in which case that object will be used to iterate over to find properties rather than this. Using this approach provides some really interesting functionality when use the dynamic type. To use this we have to add an explicit constructor to the Expando subclass:public class User : Westwind.Utilities.Dynamic.Expando { public string Email { get; set; } public string Password { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public bool Active { get; set; } public DateTime? ExpiresOn { get; set; } public User() : base() { } // only required if you want to mix in seperate instance public User(object instance) : base(instance) { } } to allow the instance to be passed. When you do you can now do:[TestMethod] public void ExpandoMixinTest() { // have Expando work on Addresses var user = new User( new Address() ); // cast to dynamicAccessToPropertyTest dynamic duser = user; // Set strongly typed properties duser.Email = "[email protected]"; user.Password = "nonya123"; // Set properties on address object duser.Address = "32 Kaiea"; //duser.Phone = "808-123-2131"; // set dynamic properties duser.NonExistantProperty = "This works too"; // shows default value Address.Phone value Console.WriteLine(duser.Phone); } Using the dynamic cast in this case allows you to access *three* different 'objects': The strong type properties, the dynamically added properties in the dictionary and the properties of the instance passed in! Effectively this gives you a way to simulate multiple inheritance (which is scary - so be very careful with this, but you can do it). How Expando works Behind the scenes Expando is a DynamicObject subclass as I discussed in my last post. By implementing a few of DynamicObject's methods you can basically create a type that can trap 'property missing' and 'method missing' operations. When you access a non-existant property a known method is fired that our code can intercept and provide a value for. Internally Expando uses a custom dictionary implementation to hold the dynamic properties you might add to your expandable object. Let's look at code first. It only provides the indexer and Contains() and GetProperties() methods, that work against the Properties dictionary AND the internal instance. The reason for not implementing IDictionary is that a) it doesn't add much value since you can access the Properties dictionary directly and that b) I wanted to keep the interface to class very lean so that it can serve as an entity type if desired. Implementing these IDictionary (or even IEnumerable) causes LINQ extension methods to pop up on the type which obscures the property interface and would only confuse the purpose of the type. IDictionary and IEnumerable are also problematic for XML and JSON Serialization - the XML Serializer doesn't serialize IDictionary<string,object>, nor does the DataContractSerializer. The JavaScriptSerializer does serialize, but it treats the entire object like a dictionary and doesn't serialize the strongly typed properties of the type, only the dictionary values which is also not desirable. Hence the decision to stick with only implementing the indexer to support the user["CustomProperty"] functionality and leaving iteration functions to the publicly exposed Properties dictionary. Note that the Dictionary used here is a custom PropertyBag class I created to allow for serialization to work. One important aspect for my apps is that whatever custom properties get added they have to be accessible to AJAX clients since the particular app I'm working on is a SIngle Page Web app where most of the Web access is through JSON AJAX calls. PropertyBag can serialize to XML and one way serialize to JSON using the JavaScript serializer (not the DCS serializers though). The key components that make Expando work in this code are the Properties Dictionary and the TryGetMember() and TrySetMember() methods. The Properties collection is public so if you choose you can explicitly access the collection to get better performance or to manipulate the members in internal code (like loading up dynamic values form a database). Notice that TryGetMember() and TrySetMember() both work against the dictionary AND the internal instance to retrieve and set properties. This means that user["Name"] works against native properties of the object as does user["Name"] = "RogaDugDog". What's your Use Case? This is still an early prototype but I've plugged it into one of my customer's applications and so far it's working very well. The key features for me were the ability to easily extend the type with values coming from a database and exposing those values in a nice and easy to use manner. I'm also finding that using this type of object for ViewModels works very well to add custom properties to view models. I suspect there will be lots of uses for this - I've been using the extra dictionary approach to extensibility for years - using a dynamic type to make the syntax cleaner is just a bonus here. • What compatibility trade-offs do we need to make in order to use a hardened SSL config for Nginx?

    - by nathan.f77
    I found some hardened SSL settings in github.com/ioerror/duraconf. Here is the header from the config: This is an example of a high security, somewhat compatible SSLv3 and TLSv1 enabled HTTPS proxy server. The server only allows modes that provide perfect forward secrecy; no other modes are offered. Anonymous cipher modes are disabled. This configuation does not include the HSTS header to ensure that users do not accidentally connect to an insecure HTTP service after their first visit. It only supports strong ciphers in PFS mode: ssl_prefer_server_ciphers on; ssl_session_cache shared:SSL:10m; ssl_session_timeout 10m; # Only strong ciphers in PFS mode ssl_ciphers ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES256-SHA:DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES128-SHA; ssl_protocols SSLv3 TLSv1; If we were to use these settings on our website, what does "somewhat compatible" mean? For example, would IE6 still be able to connect?

  • What are the performance differences between PCI-Express x16 and x4

    - by Cestarian
    I have two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots on my motherboard, but one of them is actually just x4. For passing through my graphics card to a virtual machine I need to use both slots simultaneously and unfortunately, the easiest way for me to achieve that is putting the stronger card in the x4 slot (secondary slot; I need the stronger card to be in the secondary slot, not the primary). As such I am wondering what sort of noticable performance differences I can expect from using the x4 slot with a strong card as opposed to having it in the true x16 slot. Does it limit the performance so much that the strong card in the x4 slot will actually perform worse than the significantly weaker card in the x16 slot? (For spec comparison I am using a GTX-670 in the x4 slot and GTX-550-Ti in the x16 slot) What implications does this have?

  • The Koyal Group Info Mag News¦Charged building material could make the renewable grid a reality

    - by Chyler Tilton
    What if your cell phone didn’t come with a battery? Imagine, instead, if the material from which your phone was built was a battery. The promise of strong load-bearing materials that can also work as batteries represents something of a holy grail for engineers. And in a letter published online in Nano Letters last week, a team of researchers from Vanderbilt University describes what it says is a breakthrough in turning that dream into an electrocharged reality. The researchers etched nanopores into silicon layers, which were infused with a polyethylene oxide-ionic liquid composite and coated with an atomically thin layer of carbon. In doing so, they created small but strong supercapacitor battery systems, which stored electricity in a solid electrolyte, instead of using corrosive chemical liquids found in traditional batteries. These supercapacitors could store and release about 98 percent of the energy that was used to charge them, and they held onto their charges even as they were squashed and stretched at pressures up to 44 pounds per square inch. Small pieces of them were even strong enough to hang a laptop from—a big, fat Dell, no less. Although the supercapacitors resemble small charcoal wafers, they could theoretically be molded into just about any shape, including a cell phone’s casing or the chassis of a sedan. They could also be charged—and evacuated of their charge—in less time than is the case for traditional batteries. “We’ve demonstrated, for the first time, the simple proof-of-concept that this can be done,” says Cary Pint, an assistant professor in the university’s mechanical engineering department and one of the authors of the new paper. “Now we can extend this to all kinds of different materials systems to make practical composites with materials specifically tailored to a host of different types of applications. We see this as being just the tip of a very massive iceberg.” Pint says potential applications for such materials would go well beyond “neat tech gadgets,” eventually becoming a “transformational technology” in everything from rocket ships to sedans to home building materials. “These types of systems could range in size from electric powered aircraft all the way down to little tiny flying robots, where adding an extra on-board battery inhibits the potential capability of the system,” Pint says. And they could help the world shift to the intermittencies of renewable energy power grids, where powerful batteries are needed to help keep the lights on when the sun is down or when the wind is not blowing. “Using the materials that make up a home as the native platform for energy storage to complement intermittent resources could also open the door to improve the prospects for solar energy on the U.S. grid,” Pint says. “I personally believe that these types of multifunctional materials are critical to a sustainable electric grid system that integrates solar energy as a key power source.”

  • set chars to uppercase between parenthesis

    - by emzap79
    let's assume in vim I have following lines: all what (strong) people have to do is pushing (heavy) weights over (and over) again in order to gain muscles and I need to convert words inside parenthesis to uppercase, what is the most convenient way to do so? How do I tell vim it needs to select everything to the first (!) closing parenthesis? So far I came up with :%s/\s(.*)\s/\U&/g unfortunately this will uppercase everything between 'strong' and 'heavy' which is not what I want. Any chance to tell vim it should select the chars to the next closing bracket only? (sorry for the silly example, couldn't think of something more sophisticated... or at least vim related... huh)
