  • Error during Time Machine backups on OS X Lion

    After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Latest successful backup: 7/31/11 at 12:32 PM I'm running 10.7. Time Machine is backing up an internal HD to an external USB HD. I've already run Disk Utility to repair the Time Machine partition. It's a relatively new hard drive and didn't have any issues.   • Oracle Tutor: XPDL conversion (and why you should care)

    You may have noticed that the Oracle Business Process Converter feature in Tutor 14 supports "XPDL" conversion to Oracle Business Process Analysis Suite (BPA), Oracle Business Process Management Suite (BPM), and Oracle Tutor, and you may have briefly wondered "what is XPDL?" before you moved on to the Visio import feature (a very popular feature in Tutor 14). This posting is for those who do not yet understand (or care) about XPDL and process modeling. Many of us (and I'm including myself) have spent years working in the process definition arena: we've written procedures, designed systems and software to help others write procedures, and have been responsible for embedding policies and procedures into training material for employees. We've worked with tools such as Oracle Tutor, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Word, and UPK. Most of us have never worked with "modeling tools" before, and we certainly never had to understand BPMN. It's a brave new world in this arena, and companies desperately need people with policy and procedural system expertise to be able to work with system analysts so there is a seamless transfer of knowledge from IT to employees. When working with applications, a picture is worth a thousand words, so eventually you're going to need to understand and be able to work with business process models. XPDL is an acronym for XML Process Definition Language, and it is an interchange format for business process models. It allows you to take a BPMN model that was developed in one workflow application such as BizAgi and import it into another workflow application or a true BPMN management system such as Oracle BPM. Specifically, the XPDL format contains the graphical information of a model as well as any executable information. By using a common format, models can be moved from a basic modeling application used by business owners to applications used by system architects. Over 80 applications support the XPDL format, including MetaStorm ProVision, BEA ALBPM, BizAgi, and Tibco. I mention these applications because we have provided XSLT mapping files specifically for these vendors. Oracle Business Process Converter was designed with user extensibility in mind, and thus users can add their own XML files so that additional XPDL models from other vendors can be converted to BPM, BPA, and Oracle Tutor. Instructions on how to add your own files can be found in Appendix 4 of the Oracle Business Converter manual. Let's take a visual look at how this works. Here is an example of a model devloped in BizAgi: This model can be created by the average business user without a large learning curve, and it's a good start for the system analyst who will be adding web services as well as for the business manager who manages the process described in the model. By exporting this model as XPDL, the information can be converted into Oracle BPA and Oracle BPM as well as converted to Oracle Tutor to become the framework for a procedure. Through this conversion feature, one graphic illustration of a business process can be used by a system analyst, business analyst, business manager, and employee, as seen below. Model Converted to Tutor Procedure Below is the task section of the procedure after conversion from an XPDL file. Model converted to BPA Model converted to BPM End users still want step by step instructions on how to perform their jobs, so procedures (Oracle Tutor) and application simulations (UPK) are still a critical piece of the solution. But IT professionals need graphic descriptions of how the applications work, regardless of whether there are any tasks involving humans. Now there is a way to convert procedures (Oracle Tutor docx files) and basic models (XPDL files) so that business managers and system analysts can share process information.   • Apple Airport Express, Extreme and Time Capsules, BT Home Hub, Wireless Extenders confusion

    I post quite frequently in Stack Overflow, but use Superuser less frequently. Mainly as I don't change hardware often and rarely have software issues! I live in a small stone cottage, and have an office in a separate building across a yard. I have a BT Homehub which is located in the cottage and a series of Ethernet cables running across the yard to the office. This is fine for my wired stuff. My main office computers are PCs running Windows 7 Ultimate, and one on Win7 Home, all working fine. I also have an old laptop on Win XP which works fine wirelessly in the house for those evenings in front of the TV catching up on a bit of work. I also have an iPhone and an iPad. Recently, I have been trying to get WiFi in the office so I can use Adobe Shadow (or whatever it now is!) to improve mobile web development efficiency using my iPhone and iPad, so I bought this: http://www.ebuyer.com/393462-zyxel-wre2205-500mbps-powerline-wireless-n300-range-extender-wre2205-gb0101f Thinking that would be lovely just plugged into the socket by the door in the office, extending the perimeter of the WiFi from my Homehub. I can't get it to work properly! If I plug a laptop into its ethernet port I can get it to connect to the Homehub and give me a kinda of wired, wireless extender. If, however, I plug the ethernet port into my home hub, it then seems to extend the network, but only my iOs devices work, and all my wired stuff stops working, and seems to create an infinite loop where windows connects to my homehob, and then rather to the internet, it then connects back to the extender thing. Anyway... in the meantime, I took a fatal trip to the Apple Store, where I purchased an Airport Express... solely for the purpose of hooking my iOs devices up as wireless music players in the house. I knew it had WiFi, but didn't want to use that part as an extender, I didn't think it would work on a Homehub anyway. It doesn't work on a Homehub! I now have a new wireless network in the house, which, when anything connects to it cannot connect to the Internet, so it works ONLY as a wireless music player. I then borrowed some Powerline Adaptors from someone and realised that this whole thing was getting totally out of control! It seems all the technology is out there but it's so complicated to get the right series of devices. To further add to the confusion, I wouldn't mind a network hard drive. I bought one that broke and lost everything, so now we're on to looking at the Apple Time Capsules. So my question is... IF... I buy an Apple Time Capsule, can I: Hook that up to my Homehub, leaving the homehub connected to the Internet so my Hub phones still work, then disable wireless on the homehub Link up my Airport Express to the Time Capsule PROPERLY so it will connect to the Internet Do the above with an Apple TV box should I buy one in future Use the Time Capsule as a network hard drive to store video and music that can be viewed/listened to via my iOS devices/Apple TV/Aiport Express anywhere even with my main PC off (this currently stores all this data) Hope that the IOS devices like the WiFi from the TimeCapsule better than the Homehub and work without extension, or buy another Airport Express to get WiFI in the office. Or... should I buy an Airport Extreme and use a USB hard drive for the network drive?

For test.9, I lose 957 milliseconds. What kind of accuracy can I expect? Are my results going to vary by operating system or file system? Suggested workarounds? NOTE: I'm currently running Linux with an XFS filesystem. I wrote a quick program in C and the stat system call shows st_mtime as truncate(xyz...000/1000).

  • Measuring daemon CPU utilization over a portion of it's wall clock run time

    I am dealing with a network-related daemon: it takes data in, processes it, and spits it out. I would like to increase the performance of this daemon by profiling it and reducing it's CPU utilization. I can do this easily on Linux with gprof. However, I would also like to use something like "time" to measure it's total CPU utilization over a period of time. If possible, I would like to time it over a period that is less than its total run time: thus, I would like to start the daemon, wait awhile, generate CPU statistics, stop generating them, then stop the daemon at some later time. The "time" command would work well for me, but it seems to require that I start and stop the daemon as a child of time. Is there a way to measure CPU utilization for only a portion of the daemon's wall clock time?

  • Restore using time machine from an macbook to an macbook pro (first intel)

    Hello.. My girlfriend have Macbook 10.6.3, the first plastic version. the screen broke an its at service store now. In the mean time, i have tried to restore from hers TM backup to my old macbook pro 10.6.3 (the first intel version). Everything seems to work out fine, but when its finish, it says reboot, but nothing happens. When i hold down the power button, powering down, and starts again, its come up with the grey roll down screen "you need to restart your machine again" in different languages. I have tried the restore procedure over again 2 times, and every time it ends up like this... Anyone have a suggestion what to do ? Thanks - Anders.

    I am trying to run net time on a Windows 7 box with an account that is part of the Administrators group. When I run the command net time from an elevated command prompt I get the following error: System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. Why is this happening? I've looked at this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and have gone through the steps. Both the computer and the DC are connected to the same NTP server and I've verified they're synced I'm working on a local account so there should be no permissions issues There is no local firewall running

For example: if I were to write a program that did this: Do 2+2 then wait 5 seconds How does the processor know what "5 seconds" is? How is time measured in computer systems? Is there a specific chip for that sole purpose? How does it work? Thanks for any replies; I'm really interested in computer science, and would love any help you could give me =D.

    I saw this question and was hoping that someone could expand upon the chosen answer (which I understood): Can you sudo mv Time Machine backup files as sudo from the trash to their original locations? I have tried doing this as root to no avail (operation not permitted). If not, can you successfully rm them via the trash via the terminal, faster than what the endless 'preparing to empty the trash' dialog suggests, and If you get the files back out of the trash can you tell if they are intact via disk utility (and how) Can you force indexing on a Time Machine drive in the same way that you would a normal drive to rebuild the TM index? I realize that a single answer could clarify all of the above, but I wanted to include details to be clear on what I am asking. Thanks for any help.

  • Windows 7 systeminfo reporting incorrect System Boot Time?

    I work 9-5 and switch my PC off when I leave the office each day. When doing timesheets I need to know what time I got to work, so I usually use cmd systeminfo for finding the System Boot Time. Since upgrading to Windows 7 however, it's started reporting bizarre numbers between 11pm-2am instead of 8-9am. Today it says it booted at 11:34pm last night! I checked the event log and there is no entries between when I shutdown at 5:30pm yesterday and booted around 8am this morning. Has anyone else encountered this?

    I am planning to assemble a custom NAS machine using an Intel Atom processor. I need the NAS for the following purposes: It should be accessible from by Windows PC so that I can dump data on the NAS (installations, media etc) It should be accessible from my Macbook for the above use. I should be able to use it with the Mac time machine software for backup. The media should be available to my PS3 for streaming. I should be able to access it from my iphone. All the above features should be available over wireless. The time machine feature is very important. Is this even possible? Can someone provide resources on how I can assemble such a machine and setup the required software on it? Much appreciated.

    A number of application servers started erroring out in my domain. Troubleshooting led me to a missconfiguration of NTP. I fixed the issue, but I don't know how the issue arose in the first place. The only errors I can find are System Error: 1097 Source: useenv System Error: 1058 Source: useenv System Error: 1030 Source: useenv System Error: 1000 Source: mmc How else can I find out why NTP started acting up on my domain? Is there any troubleshooting steps to diagnose why my DC started pulling from a random timeserver with the wrong time? EDIT: Current issue actually remains: the two 2003 DCs are not syncing with the PDC (a 2k8 box). w32tm /resync -- The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

I would like to verify that my Time Machine backups are valid, and will restore correctly. My Time Machine backups go to a Linux server running Netatalk, and the backups complete successfully. How do I do a test restore to an alternative location, or otherwise verify my data without overwriting any existing files? Do I need to save anything in particular externally to make sure I can access the backups if I have to reinstall from scratch?

    When Time Machine says "I will delete the oldest files first" does it mean this literally. Here is a theoretical example. Source Drive: 300 GB, consisting of 1 280 GB file and a 1 GB file. Backup Drive: 300 GB The initial backup will backup both files, using 281 GB. If I modify the 1 GB file 21 times, what will Time machine do when I run out of room on the backup drive; Delete the original 280 GB because it is the oldest file or delete the oldest version of the file I have modified 21 times. I hope it would delete the oldest version of the file I have modified 21 times, but I want to be sure. Thanks, Joel Budgor

  • How can I delete Time Machine files using the commandline

    I want to delete some files/directories from my Time Machine Partition using rm, but am unable to do so. I'm pretty sure the problem is related to some sort of access control extended attributes on files in the backup, but do not know how to override/disable them in order to get rm to work. An example of the error I'm getting is: % sudo rm -rf Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir: Directory not empty rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir/somefile: Operation not permitted There are a number of reasons I do not want to use either the Time Machine GUI or Finder for this. If possible, I'd like to be able to maintain the extended protection for all other files (I'd like not to disable them globally, unless I can re-enable once I've done my work).

The current process, limited by softwares such as CutePDF, requires the conversion performed one message at a time.   • I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer?

    A lot of blogs and advice on the web seem to suggest that in order to become a great developer, doing just your day job is not enough. For example, you should contribute to open source projects in your spare time, write smartphone apps, etc. In fact a lot of this advice seems to suggest that if you don't love programming enough to do it all day long then you're probably in the wrong career. That doesn't ring true with me. I enjoy my work, but when I come home from the office I'm not in the mood to jump straight back onto the computer and start coding away until bedtime. I only have a certain number of hours free time each day, and I'd rather spend them on other hobbies, seeing friends or going outside than in front of the computer. I do get a kick out of programming, and do hack around outside of work occasionally. I'm committed to my personal development and spend time reading tech blogs and books as a way to keep learning and becoming better. But that doesn't extend so far as to my wanting to use all my spare time for coding. Does this mean I'm not a 'true' software developer at heart? Is it possible to become a good software developer without doing extra outside your job? I'd be very interested to hear what you think.

  • Converting Milliseconds to Timecode

    I have an audio project I'm working on using BASS from Un4seen. This library uses BYTES mainly but I have a conversion in place that let's me show the current position of the song in Milliseconds. Knowing that MS = Samples * 1000 / SampleRate and that Samples = Bytes * 8 / Bits / Channels So here's my main issue and it's fairly simple... I have a function in my project that converts the Milliseconds to TimeCode in Mins:Secs:Milliseconds. Public Function ConvertMStoTimeCode(ByVal lngCurrentMSTimeValue As Long) ConvertMStoTimeCode = CheckForLeadingZero(Fix(lngCurrentMSTimeValue / 1000 / 60)) & ":" & _ CheckForLeadingZero(Int((lngCurrentMSTimeValue / 1000) Mod 60)) & ":" & _ CheckForLeadingZero(Int((lngCurrentMSTimeValue / 10) Mod 100)) End Function Now the issue comes within the Seconds calculation. Anytime the MS calculation is over .5 the seconds place rounds up to the next second. So 1.5 seconds actually prints as 2.5 seconds. I know for sure that using the Int conversion causes a round down and I know my math is correct as I've checked in a calculator 100 times. I can't figure out why the number is rounding up. Any suggestions?
