  • How can I lower the CPU temperature?

    I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my EeePC 1015PX and I've noticed that the CPU temperature does not go below 60ºC (70 is usual). Looking at powertop it seems the 2 cores (Atom N570) are idle most of the time. I've installed jupiter (w/ jupiter-eee-support) but it did not help. Edit: Meanwhile I've found out that echo 2 > /sys/devices/platform/eeepc-wmi/cpufv is supposed to turn on Super Hybrid Engine. Though it seems to help a bit (temperature goes down 2-3ºC), the temperatures are still in the 60-70ºc range.

  • What impact would a young developer in a consultancy struggling on a project have?

    I am a youngish developer (working for 3 yrs). I took a job 3 months ago as an IT consultant (for the first time, I'm a consultant). In my first project, all went will till the later stages where I ran into problems with Windows/WMI (lack of documentation etc). As important as it is to not leave surprises for the client, this did happen. I was supposed to go back to finish the project about a month and a half ago, after getting a date scheduled, but this did not happen either. The project (code) was slightly rushed too and went through QA (no idea what the results are). My probation review is in a few weeks time, and I was wondering, what sort of impact would this have? My manager hasn't mentioned this project to me and apart from this, everything's been ok and he has even said, at the beginning, if you are tight on time just ask for more, so he has been accomodating (At this time, I was doing well, the problems came later).

    Some of our customers inform us that in some cases following error appears: System.Management.ManagementException: Blad dostawcy. at System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWithExtendedInfo(ManagementStatus errorCode) at System.Management.ManagementObjectCollection.ManagementObjectEnumerator.MoveNext() The error is generated while trying to loop through a colection returned by Get() method of the System.Mamangment.ManagementObjectSearcher object.   • ASP.Net Web Farm Monitoring

    I am looking for suggestions on doing some simple monitoring of an ASP.Net web farm as close to real-time as possible. The objectives of this question are to: Identify the best way to monitor several Windows Server production boxes during short (minutes long) period of ridiculous load Receive near-real-time feedback on a few key metrics about each box. These are simple metrics available via WMI such as CPU, Memory and Disk Paging. I am defining my time constraints as soon as possible with 120 seconds delayed being the absolute upper limit. Monitor whether any given box is up (with "up" being defined as responding web requests in a reasonable amount of time) Here are more details, things I've tried, etc. I am not interested in logging. We have logging solutions in place. I have looked at solutions such as ELMAH which don't provide much in the way of hardware monitoring and are not visible across an entire web farm. ASP.Net Health Monitoring is too broad, focuses too much on logging and is not acceptable for deep analysis. We are on Amazon Web Services and we have looked into CloudWatch. It looks great but messages in the forum indicate that the metrics are often a few minutes behind, with one thread citing 2 minutes as the absolute soonest you could expect to receive the feedback. This would be good to have for later analysis but does not help us real-time Stuff like JetBrains profiler is good for testing but again, not helpful during real-time monitoring. The closest out-of-box solution I've seen is Nagios which is free and appears to measure key indicators on any kind of box, including Windows. However, it appears to require a Linux box to run itself on and a good deal of manual configuration. I'd prefer to not spend my time mining config files and then be up a creek when it fails in production since Linux is not my main (or even secondary) environment. Are there any out-of-box solutions that I am missing? Obviously a windows-based solution that is easy to setup is ideal. I don't require many bells and whistles. In the absence of an out-of-box solution, it seems easy for me to write something simple to handle what I need. I've been thinking a simple client-server setup where the server requests a few WMI metrics from each client over http and sticks them in a database. We could then monitor the metrics via a query or a dashboard or something. If the client doesn't respond, it's effectively down. Any problems with this, best practices, or other ideas? Thanks for any help/feedback.

    How can you programmatically measure per-process (or better, per-thread) CPU usage under windows 95, windows 98 and windows ME? If it requires the DDK, where can you obtain that? Please note the Win9x requirement. It's easy on NT. EDIT: I tried installing the Win95/98 version of WMI, but Win32_Process.KernelModeTime and Win32_Process.UserModeTime return Null (as do most Win32_Process properties under win9x).

    I know that it's possible to get this information - Intel's own TurboBoost sidebar gadget appears to use an ActiveX control to determine the current clock speed of an i3/i5/i7 CPU when TurboBoost is active. However, I'm wanting to do this programmatically in C# - obtaining the CurrentClockSpeed value from WMI tops out at the set maximum clock speed of the CPU, so in TurboBoost mode, it doesn't report the current actual clock speed.

    Hi there. I'm trying to build a simple cluster based on Windows XP. I compiled OpenMPI-1.4.2 successfully, and tools like mpicc and ompi_info work too, but I can't get my mpirun working properly.     I need a reliable way to detect how many CPU cores are on a computer. I am creating a numerically intense simulation C# application and want to create the maximum number of running threads as cores. I have tried many of the methods suggested around the internet like Environment.ProcessorCount, using WMI, this code: http://blogs.adamsoftware.net/Engine/DeterminingthenumberofphysicalCPUsonWindows.aspx. None of them seem to think a AMD X2 has two cores. Any ideas?

  • MMC and Server Manager Authentication Errors - Access Denied

    I'm trying to connect remotely from my Windows 8 client to manage my Hyper-V Server 2012. I have done everything I can find to configure remote management of the server including: Added a net user on server Enabled anonymous dcom access on server and client Added firewall rules for "Windows Firewall Remote Management" and "Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)" on server Added firewall exception on server for client IP Added cmdkey on client Added server to TrustedHost list on client Added LocalAccountTokenFilter policy registry entry on server Added client IP to server's host file Added server IP to client's host file I cannot believe I am still getting these errors. What's even more strange is that I can connect in Hyper-V Manager and create VM's but not in MMC and Server Manager. I also get Access Denied trying to Open the Authorization Store on my server from my client using Authorization Manager. I'm providing all the errors because I have a feeling they root from the same problem. Does anybody see anything I missed?

  • Turn Windows Event Logs EVT files into Syslog to send to LogLogic

    I have a a requirement to analyze 13gb of Windows logs by feeding it into a LogLogic Log aggregator. LogLogic is essentially Linux Syslog server, it can take a Syslog (Tcp/udp 514) feed or log on to a windows share and pull a flat file log. The only problem is that it cannot read the binary .EVT files from Windows Event logs. Normally, I would use Lasso to end the logs to a loglogic as syslog, but it has to read the logs from WMI and uses the DLLs on the log source host to format them and transmit them as syslog in the formatting that LogLogic expects. Does anyone know: A. Is there some kind of product out there to do this? or - B. Is there some way to import them into a Windows event veiwer in a way that lasso (or snare for that matter) will see them as actual real event logs on that host and forward them to the loglogic device as syslog.

    To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. It looks something like this DOMAIN Default Domain Policy (link enabled) Password Policy (link enabled and enforce) Personal OU Force Password Change (completely empty nothing in this GPO) IT OU Lockout Policy (link enabled and enforced) CS OU Lockout Policy Accouting OU Lockout Policy The password policy and default domain policy both define the same things under Computer ConfigWindows seetings sec settings Account Policies / Password Policy Enforce password History : 24 passwords remembered Maximum Password age : 180 days Min password age: 14 days Minimum Password Length: 6 characters Password must meet complexity requirements: Enabled Store Passwords using reversible encryption: Disabled Account Policies / Account Lockout Policy Account Lockout Duration 10080 Minutes Account Lockout Threshold: 5 invalid login attempts Reset Account Lockout Counter after : 30 minutes IT lockout This just sets the screen saver settings to lock computers when the user is Idle. After running Group Policy modeling it seems like the password policy and default domain policy is getting applied to everyone.   • How can I edit local security policy from a batch file?

    I am trying to write a utility as a batch file that, among other things, adds a user to the "Deny logon locally" local security policy. This batch file will be used on hundreds of independent computers (not on a domain and aren't even on the same network). I assumed one of the following were my options, but perhaps there's one I haven't thought of. A command line utility similar to net.exe which can modify local security policy. A VBScript sample to do the same. Write my own using some WMI or Win32 calls. I'd rather not do this one if I don't have to.

  • Hide notification area GPO not applying

    I have created a GPO to hide the notification area on Windows XP SP3. The GPO must apply to all students but only in certain rooms so I've also enabled loopback processing on the GPO and linked to the OUs the computers are in. I've then added a group to the security filter that contains all student accounts. This is not applying. It doesn't even show up in gpresult. I have also tried linking it in the Students OU which contains all student accounts and applying a security filter with a group of the computers I want it to apply to. This didn't work either. It's possible I'm missing something straightforward. Would a WMI filter do the job, and if so how would I go about writing one so that it'll only apply to computers whose name begins with XX-RT for example.
