  Hi, after a other mac or macbook is connected with a mini display port to a new generation imac you can switch between the imac and the other connected mac pressing cmd+F2(brightness up) using the keyboard of the imac. i connect my macbook to my imac, switch to the macbook and connect the bluetooth keyboard and mouse of my imac to my macbook. after that i'm not able to switch back to my imac, because the keyboard is used on my macbook. i have a second mouse connected to my imac, so i'd would be cool to switch views and control my imac with my second mouse. is it possible to send the shortcut cmd+F2 to my imac from my macbook? via command line or something? using apple script? all ideas are welcome, thanks!

  The LED display on my MacBook Pro is very blue-ish without correction. In OS X the advanced mode of the display color calibration tool is excellent and I can largely color-correct the display. Windows 7 incorporates a color calibration tool but it is less powerful. It largely consists of a software gamma correction tool and color charts to use with the hardware controls on your display (which don't exist on a notebook or an apple external display). How can I color-correct Windows in Boot Camp to match the OS X correction without using a Spyder or other special calibration hardware?

• MAC and PC problems on home network

  Hello! At home we have a wireless router that my family want to use. We have our main computer physically connected to the router, and my laptop is connected wirelessly. When the network is like this then it is faultless. However, when my brother introduces is Apple MAC into the equation, both my laptop and the family machine gets all sorts of problems, primarily long load times and timeouts. The MAC, however, works fine. I think I've read something here or SF about a MAC continusly pinging a router which times it out, but I've not found any solution so far. • Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

  I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything. • Mac OS X CD ripping speed

  I am using vobcopy (installed via macports) to rip DVDs on a mac. I have been doing this for a while on linux with no problems. On the mac however, it is VERY slow. I am guessing that somehow the DVD drive is being limited to 1x in order to keep noise and power consumption down during playback. Is there a way to over ride this? Update: It is MUCH slower than 1x. It has taken me about an hour to copy 300MB Notes: While I appreciate all suggestions, I am not looking for "Have you tried HandBrake?". I am looking for a solution to copy the contents of a DVD, not transcode them. Also, I am launching vobcopy from an apple script that gets executed on DVD insertion, so a GUI solution is not desirable.

  I don't usually use SSH if I can get away with it, but if I have to I do of course, and I've seemingly done this for years while still managing to remain slightly confused about these different terms ... from my basic research, this is my understanding, could someone verify/correct this? Telnet ... before SSH, not secure SSH ... ( secure shell ) the general name of the system/protocol Shell ... short name for SSH Command Line/Command Prompt ... the windows version Terminal ... the Unix version, also used by apple. Two further questions: What is the Linux version commonly called, is it just called SSH ? What is bash ?

• How much processor speed and cores do I need for these tasks?

  I am planning to buy a new laptop as I find my current one very slow. My question here is specifically related to RAM size and CPU power. I will mostly be doing development (not much games). I would be dabbling in distributed computing, multithreaded and data intensive parallelizable tasks on multi-cores. For e.g. I would want to be able to Concurrent programming in Scala/Java/Clojure etc. and be able to see parallelization. Furthermore, I would want the RAM to be enough. But from a developer machine standpoint, do you think 4GB RAM and 2.53GHz Dual Core processor would be enough.   I'm comparing these two Apple laptops: MacBook Pro (13", 2011 model): 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on 2.4GHz configuration MacBook Air (13", 2011 model): 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 onboard memory Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory There's definitely a gap between them in terms of CPU speed and graphics, but what practical difference would this make on a day-to-day basis? On the one hand, I love the sleek, thin appearance of the Air. On the other hand, I don't want a machine that's going to be dog-slow when doing tasks such as running Virtual Machines, dual-booting to Windows and running multiple instances of Visual Studio, and maybe some light gaming. Is there going to be a major difference that makes the MacBook Pro a more attractive purchase?

Question: Is it possible to change my settings so I can use the WeirdX (a web-based java X server) applet to take care of the X client programs instead of Mac OS X's default X11? • Messages don't always appear in Mail.app

  My wife and I share a Mac and use different accounts. We both use Apple's standard Mail.app. We can also get to our email accounts via SquirrelMail that our webhost provides. Both SquirrelMail and Mail.app are connecting via IMAP. My wife was the first to notice that not all messages were getting to the Mail.app. She would check the Mac (our main machine) and then a little while later check mail from another machine via SquirrelMail and see messages there that should have been on the Mac. She would go back and those messages would never show up. Lately, I have been seeing the same thing, though less often. I can't reproduce it, or just look at a message to see if they haven't been moved over. I've looked in Junk, etc. and the Mac simply never sees those messages via IMAP. Does anyone have a guess to something I could poke around at?

  I'm on OSX 10.6.8 and would like to enable the root user. I found Apple's KB article, however this point Click the lock in the Directory Utility window. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK. Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu. is not possible, because there is no "Edit Menu" Icon! I'm logged in as admin, but I only see "Services" and "Search Policy". Repeat, I do not see the "Editor", it's just not there. What gives? How it should be: Directory Utility

• Close all Mac Terminal windows, but the one running a script

  I am trying to create a shell script that runs a python simulation programing in 4 terminal windows. I have the script that launches the program four times in four separate terminal windows(total of 5 windows, 4 for the python programs, and one to control the other terminal windows). I want to now create a script that I can run in the control terminal window that closes and kills the programs of the other four terminal windows, but still have the control one open. What I have so far is something like this #!/bin/sh osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" do script "killall python" end tell' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to quit' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to open' The problem is that the last line doesn't work because it closes all the windows including the one the script is executing in. I am not really familiar with shell or apple script so any help would be welcomed. I posted on Stack, but I think this might be a better place for an automation type question. Thanks

• iChat can't authenticate to Lion Server 10.7.2 [migrated]

  I've enabled iChat and iCal Server through our local 10.7.2 Server which has DNS set up correctly. I can add the server account via a client's System Preferences (under other - Mac OS X server) and it authenticates with my shortname correctly. However, when I load iChat, I get this error message: Where the account is [email protected]. The password and username is correct. Console throws this error: 22/11/11 3:03:31.135 PM imagent: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=105 "The operation couldn?t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 105.)" UserInfo=0x7f81bbe2a3e0 {XMPPErrorText=service requested for unknown domain} DNS is set up correctly (it's working for Profile Management, Software Update Server and Web Services) but I can't get iChat to work correctly. How can I get clients to authenticate? FYI: It's probably worth noting that I get the exact same error messages when I use [email protected] instead of [email protected].   I have an Ubuntu 12.04 NFS server and I have an iMac NFS client running OS X 10.6.8. I believe I have everything set up properly, yet I still get this error on the Mac: mount_nfs: can't access /nfs: Permission denied My exports on the Linux server uses the insecure option like this: /export/home/me/ 192.168.100.132(rw,subtree_check,insecure,nohide) Where 192.168.100.132 is the address of my Mac. I have even tried using -o resvport on the Mac (in addition to insecure on Linux) and I still get the same error as above. $ sudo mount -t nfs -o resvport 192.168.100.1:/home/me /Users/me/mount Here is the output of showmount: # showmount -e 192.168.100.1 Export list for 192.168.100.1: /export/home/me 192.168.100.132 .... I have reviewed this similar question: How to mount NFS export on Mac OS X? And I have reviewed this frequently recommended tutorial: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/apple-mac-osx-nfs-mount-command-tutorial/ I still can't find a solution. Any ideas?

  i've got a web service up and running with apache on ubuntu server in a vps from a hosting company (long sentence:)). i wonder when someone would like to set up a own mail server (postfix + dovecot)? cause i just want to be able to: send emails (account activation etc) to my users with php - the emails have to appear to come from the website's domain receive emails from my users (customer support etc) using Apple Mail/Microsoft Outlook. could this be accomplished with an email hosting company? are there situations i would benefit from setting up an own mail server on ubuntu?

• How do you change your Airport or Ethernet MAC address in Mac OS X 10.6?

  I have a MacBook Pro and would like to set a custom MAC address for either my Airport WiFi card, or Ethernet port. In older versions of Mac OS X, you could do it like this: $ sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 // Ethernet $ sudo ifconfig en1 lladdr AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF // Airport For it to work on Airport, you'd have to power it on (e.g. $ sudo ifconfig en1 up), ensure it's not connected to any wireless network, and execute the command. I'm aware such a change won't propagate across reboots. Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Mac OS X 10.6.6 anymore. Apple appears to have removed the functionality (the command fails silently). Does anyone have any idea how to do it? Thanks for any help you can offer! :)

  Hi, I just got a Lexmark x543dn and have some trouble getting my computer to recognize it as a scanner. The printer is working fine from my OS X 10.6 machine, setup was as easy as it gets. I just connected it to my network, gave it a name and added it under that name as a networked printer in OS X. According to the Apple support website, the driver in OS X (I upgraded to the newest drivers already) should also provide scanning capabilities. However when I run the image capture app included in OS X it tells me that there are no scanners available. Can anybody tell me what I have to do to get OS X to recognize the scanner? Thanks, Thomas

• iTunes Title Bar is Equal to the Location of the Library file?

  I have never been able to get a clear answer on why the latest edition of iTunes does this. I have my entire iTunes library located in C:\itunes\ and the library data files inside C:\itunes\!library_info for backup purposes. However when version 9 of iTunes came out it went from having iTunes as the title, to !library_info. Anyway to get around this without moving my data files away? Annoying "feature" if that is what it is. Again Apple support and forums were of no help to me. Anyone have insight on this? • Cannot upgrade to Lion using DVD

  When I first setup my MBP on 10.6 I made a lot of newb mistakes, and was unable to get Ruby on Rails to install, amongst a lot of other things. Because of this, I decided to backup everything on to a Time Machine HDD and re-install Lion. I had a bunch of problems but managed to sort them out, requiring me to go back to 10.6 from the original disc that came with the MBP. Before I did anything however, I burnt the Lion installer that I got from the App Store to a DVD. Now though, when I try to run it, I get the following: Cannot download additional components. I've managed to download software updates, so I know it can connect to the Apple servers.

• Can't mount time capsule via wi-fi.

  I have an Apple time capsule, and have been able to back up to it without a problem for the past few months. However, today I found I cannot connect to the time capsule from Finder, though it appears there, when I click "connect as...", it takes a few seconds and then reports connect failed, "the server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again". When I check Time Machine, it says the last backup failed because "the backup volume could not be mounted". The strange part is, the time capsule is also my router, and I am able to use the time capsule as a wireless access point without a problem. Any ideas?

• How do you enable syslogd to accept incoming connections on Snow Leopard from remote loggers?

  How do I get syslogd to accept incoming connections from remote hosts on Snow Leopard? I'd like to centralize logging such that various devices and systems send logs to Snow Leopard's syslogd, which normally hangs out on UDP 514. However, I'm unable to get them to successfully be accepted by good ole syslogd. I tcpdumped on the Snow Leopard box to verify that packets are being spouted to port 514 -- they are. I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

  i have read some articles about mda and mta but still don't have a hang on it. what is exactly is the difference between a mda like fetchmail and a mta like sendmail. in my computer, do i have to have a mta installed? if im using Apple Mail to send messages, is it using a mta application in my computer to send the mail? where does it send the mail? and if i receive mails with it, does it receives it with mda installed in my computer? would be great if someone could explain how it works for me, or give me good links to good tutorials. thanks
