  I work at a software company where most of the people are afraid to install new tools to increase productivity. They give me excuses like: I don't need to install something else. I can do this myself. etc...many other baseless arguments. In an ecommerece business, the end-users should not have to install anything, everything should be managed by them from the web, and the developers should be the ones installing things to increase productivity and teamwork i.e.: Version Control Systems Build Tools (ANT, NANT, Maven, continuous integration, CSS Frameworks) Integrated Development Environments Frameworks (Unit testing, etc) Etc... How else can I get my point across without sound crass?

• Getting Postfix to process the mail queue on Mac OS X

  I'm in the process of getting Sendmail/Postfix setup so that I can send and test my PHP scripts when using the mail() function. I've got to the point that when I run the mail() function in PHP, the script executes without any errors and the mail is sent to my mailq but it then does not get processed and simply times-out with a message of: Operation timed out. • Build Google App Engine Java source from Eclipse

  I would like to try to build Google App Engine for Java from source. I have tried this: I don't know how to solve the javac Ant task. I am on Mac OS X 10.6.8. The reason why I am trying to to create a Java Project from the source is that when I try to debug/step-into the sources downloaded from SVN, something is wrong in Eclipse and it does not track execution at the right code line. It seems to be executing "comment lines"? So I don't get an accurate tracking of the code path. I think what I would ideally need is: 1) svn checkout command with matching REV number of latest SDK 2) wget command downloading matching jar

• C signal parent process from child

  I'm trying to solve a problem I've got where a child process runs execvp() and needs to let the parent know if it returns. So, after the execvp() returns (because there's been an error), how can I tell the parent that this particular event has happened so it can handle it. There's one method of writing a string of text through the pipe I'm using and then reading that from the parent.. but it seems a bit sloppy. Is there a better way? Thanks!

• grunt angularjs doesn't process video files

  I've set up my grunt file to copy, minify, uglify, revved and all that. It works fine with all media I use, except that recently I added a video to an html file, but it's not being copied to /dist, nor is the html being updated with the versioned file (that is not being copied nor revved). Not sure what I'm missing. Here is the html fragment: <div class="col-xs-4"> <div class="row flowplayer"> <video autoplay> <source type="video/mp4" src="/videos/wedding_planners_bride_smallweb.mp4"> </video> </div> </div> What do I need to add to my gruntfile.js file to process /videos the same way /images are just working out of the box?   Easy question but I don't know the answer. Let's say I have a scons build where my CCFLAGS includes -O1. I have one file needsOptimization.cpp where I would like to override the -O1 with -O2 instead. • Build Event Macros for Other Projects in the Solution

  Is it possible to reference other projects' properties via a macro within a build event? For example: "Tool1" outputs to directory ..\..\bin\Release "Component1" uses "Tool1" in its post-buildevent To get to "Tool1", "Component1"'s project must do something like $(SolutionDir)bin\Release This requires that Tool1 always output to ..\..\bin\Release. If this is changed this breaks the other project. I know there is no indication to this within the macro list but is there a way to reference another project? Maybe like $(OtherProject.TargetDir)... I know WIX has a similar syntax [$(var.OtherProject.TargetDir)] but I think that may be a different mechanism.

• Build turns partially transparent image pixels black

  I'm very new to C# and I've run into a problem and haven't been able to solve it. I have a row of buttons that have .png images assigned to them. The images are in .png format to allow transparency, and smoothing the edges in GIMP leaves some semi-transparent pixels. I've set the Image List Toolbar (imglToolbar)'s properties to recognize "Transparent" as the designated color to show up as transparent. I'm working in Visual Studio 2005. The strange thing is that everything looks great when I'm viewing the Visual C# form preview window. The icons look exactly as they should. However, once I actually build the project, the buttons treat every semi-transparent pixel near the edge of the image as if it's black.   I am a CS student learning java so I do some work at home and at college on a mixture of linux and windows. I have a problem after copying a new project into the eclipse workspace. The project shows up but with a red exclamation mark and an error saying: "The project cannot be built until build path errors are resolved" Can somebody help me out with this? I tried this http://www.scottdstrader.com/blog/ether_archives/000921.html but it didn't work. Also, are there any good ways of syncing an eclipse workspace across multiple computers?

• Process.WaitForExit not triggering with __debugbreak

  I'm trying to write a program to test student code against a good implementation. I have a C++ console app that will run one test at a time determined by the command line args and a C# .net forms app that calls the c++ app once for each test. The goal is to be able to detect not just pass/fail for each test, but also "infinite" (5secs) loop and exceptions (their code dying for whatever reason). The problem is that not all errors kill the C++ app. If they corrupt the heap the system calls __debugbreak which pops up a window saying Debug Error! HEAP CORRUPTION DETECTED... My C# app is using Process.WaitForExit(5000) to wait, but this error doesn't count as an exit, so I see a timeout. So my question is, how can I either get the C# app to detect that this is an error OR how can I get the C++ app to die when this error occurs rather than giving a dialog box and asking if I want to debug?

• Facebook Scrumptious sample app won't build

  I did exactly what they do in the video. However, when I get to the scrumptious app and try to build/run it, mine fails. It says: "Parse Issue. Expected a type." Here are the two lines that it thinks are broken (located in the ACAccountStore.h): // Returns the account type object matching the account type identifier. • Using WCF to expose underlying process

  I have a server application that spins up and monitors about 8 separate processes that gather data from different systems. The server app then runs some calculations over the aggregated data and stores it in a db. Simple stuff. I now have a requirement to modify the process so that it no longer saves data to the db but rather exposes it directly to clients via WCF. That's cool, I've used WCF a fair bit but I'm struggling a little with it for some reason. Basically my plan is to HOST the WCF service in my application and have calls redirect into the internals of my existing application but I can figure out how to do that without getting the WCF class to encapsulate the existing app. I want the service to inside my current app, not become it. Any suggestions?

  Our team builds a .NET 3.5 WinForms based application that we'd like to migrate to the latest .NET version (4.5). Our application uses many "external" components (can be thought of as plugins) that are also currently .NET 3.5 based. I'd like to know what runtime/core libraries are used in case we convert ONLY THE APPLICATION to compile using .NET 4.5? Should this scenario properly work? (loading .NET 3.5 assemblies in a 4.5 process)? * The plugin assemblies are loaded via reflection. How does the CLR runtime handle such a scenario? is this a safe practice?

• Linux script to kill process listening on a particular port

  I have a process that listens on a TCP port (?0003). From time to time it crashes - badly. It stops working, but continues hogging the port for some time, so I can't even restart it. I'm looking to automate this. What I do right now is: netstat -ntlp |grep -P "\*\:\d0003" To see what the PID is and then: kill -9 <pid> Does anyone have a script (or EXE for that matter) that would link the two steps together, ie. parse the PID from the first command and pass it to the second?

  I have inherited a rails forum (Rails 2.3.2 I think) that alerts people of new posts/replies for the forums or threads they are watching. To make it easier for people to answer to threads I would like to enable reply-to-post, similar to basecamp and a bunch of other forums and tools out there. I would add a separator text (like "----add your reply above this line-----") in the original email. I need to: - process incoming email - extract the new text (above the separator line) - ideally strip out text like "on ... [email protected] wrote:" that is automatically added by some mail clients - identify the thread this email is referring to (either using the incoming address or the subject line) - identify the sender - post the content as new reply Any suggestions on how to get started? Any good plugins for this? I've seen many mentioning Mailman and Fetcher, are there any other and which one is the best for this little feature? Thanks!

• C#: split a string into runs of characters, numbers and delimited strings and process it

  OK my regex is a bit rusty and I've been struggling with this particular problem... I need to split and process a string containing any number of the following, in any order: Chars (lowercase letters only) Quote delimited strings Ints The strings are pretty weird (I don't have control over them). When there's more than one number in a row in the string they're seperated by a comma. They need to be processed in the same order that they appeared in the original string. For example, a string might look like: abc20a"Hi""OK"100,20b With this particular string the resulting call stack would look a bit like: ProcessLetters( new[] { 'a', 'b', 'c' } ); ProcessInts( 20 ); ProcessLetters( 'a' ); ProcessStrings( new[] { "Hi", "OK" } ); ProcessInts( new[] { 100, 20 } ); ProcessLetters( 'b' ); What I could do is treat it a bit like CSV, where you build tokens by processing the characters one at a time, but I think it could be more easily done with a regex?

• TeamCity build triggers don't automatically run

  I've been playing around with and learning a bit about TeamCity and have the server correctly set up with my .Net MVC project committed in Subversion successfully and build configurations and triggers sorted to kick off when any changes are committed to the repository. TeamCity polls on its default time period and is picking up that changes have been committed, but it is adding these to the queue without actually ever running them. I have to manually click the "Run" button to kick them off. What setting do I need to change in order to ensure that any new changes are automatically run?

• Drupal 6 fails to build menu router and links

  When I enable a new menu in Drupal (for example, mymodule), Drupal should be able to get the menu items from mymodule_menu (hook_menu), process the items and insert the menu items to menu_router and menu_links page. However, my Drupal fails to do so. Each time I enable a module (written by me or modules contributed by others, or core modules), Drupal does not seem to get the new information. The menu items defined in the newly enabled module are not processed and inserted to Drupal's menu system. That means the newly enabled module has no chance to work-- because it's inaccessible. I did fix this by manually insert the menu item information for the new module into the menu_router and menu_links table and the new menu started working. But this is a nightmare if I have to do this each time I enable a module. Any one has ever had the same problem? How to fix this? Thank you in advance.

  Folks I am trying to build a sitemap (we need one badly) for a huge multi-page web app. Technically its not much more than a collection of php/MySQL web forms that use javascript instead of traditional linkage to access the many pages. >td width="100" align="center" ONMOUSEOVER="this.className='bgover'" ONMOUSEOUT="this.className='bgout'" onclick="location.href='../main.php'">Main Page</td> Above is code sample of how the links are currently managed. I know I can search through the various pages, nearly a 1000, and find these "location.href" variables and that will help me a sitemap for each section. But maybe there is an easier way? WE use Trac and SVN so perhaps I am going about this the wrong way? Any advice would be appreciated.

  Hi there guys! Hope your all enjoying your hollydays. Ive run into a pretty funny problem when trying to insert rows into a really really simple database table. The basic idea is pretty simple. The user selects one/multiple users in a multiselect which are supposed to be added to a group. This piece of code will insert a row into the user_group_relationships table, but the users id always @group = Group.find(params[:group_id]) params[:newMember][:users].each do |uid| # For debugging purposes. puts 'Uid:'+uid @rel = @group.user_group_relationships.build( :user_id => uid.to_i ) @rel.save end The user id always gets inserted as null even though it is clearly there. You can see the uid in this example is 5, so it should work. Uid:5 ... SQL (0.3ms) INSERT INTO "user_group_relationships" ("created_at", "group_id", "updated_at", "user_id") VALUES ('2010-12-27 14:03:24.331303', 2, '2010-12-27 14:03:24.331303', NULL) Any ideas why this fails?
