  I want to develop software for Linux or cross-platform. I want to work with other open-source and non-profit developers. I want a place where Ubuntu or other developers come to start open-source or commercial projects, and we can join the projects or start our own projects. I know there are social coding sites, but where can I start the project, and invite people or let people join? Then we can submit software to sourceforge.net. I know we can start projects at sourceforge.net, but is there anything more dedicated for Ubuntu developers, especially for Ubuntu and for the Ubuntu Software Center? Would you recommend Launchpad, sourceforge.net, github, gitorous or others?

  I'm just putting together an internal data system for a client, which is ASP.NET VB, backed by an SQL database, on an in-house IIS7.5 dedicated server. I want to store certain global settings, such as the age limit for news articles, admin contacts etc, in a file NOT within the database (i.e. to avoid unnecessary database query's) Where would the best place to store this be? global.asax? app.config? or a custom XML file? how would i import these at runtime? • How do I get the wireless card on a Lenovo S205 working?

  I tried to install 12.04, 13.04, and now 13.10 on the machine and followed all the instructions that made sense that I could find and still have not gotten wifi to work. It keeps it hard blocked for some reason, not sure why and not sure anyone out there either has figured it out because I would have found it on Google. When I boot from the formatted USB drive, I have WiFi and everything working, why doesn't work after the USB drive is removed? What driver is the USB/wubi or whatever using so that I can install it and have things working? I could have used wubi and installed Ubuntu like that, but I want to make this machine a fully dedicated Ubuntu machine. The laptop is a Lenovo S205 in case anyone can help. I really would like to use 12.04 or higher, i don't want to downgrade to an older version of Ubuntu if at all possible.

• Open source GIS tools

  Hi I’ve been looking at Open Source GIS tools. In particular MapServer and GeoServer. The problem I’m seeing is that to actually deploy these to the public you can’t use a regular $5/ month (or free) hosting service because you have to install these services on the server in ways that are not accessible in the average hosting scheme. So you either have to use a host that has MapServer installed (many of which look unreliable) or have a dedicated server or VPS. All of these options have a significant cost barrier ($30 - $200/month). I’m just doing this for fun. Are there any free or inexpensive ways to have your GIS services hosted? Or are there any products that install in a way that you don’t need to access the root structure of the server? I have tried OpenLayers and GeoExt but I don’t think a client side option will work for me because of the size of the datasets I am using. My base data will be vector data not WMS data (or something similar). I haven’t tried Google maps yet, but I will be looking into it. Also, any thought on using SVG for GIS purposes? Thanks

  I'm using URL rewrite on my site to get URLs like: http://mysite.com/users/john instead of http://mysite.com/index.aspx?user=john To achive this extensionless rewrite with IIS6 and no access to the hosting-server I use the "404-approach". When a request that the server can't find, the mapped 404-page is executed, since this is a aspx-page the rewrite can be performed (I can setup the 404-mapping using the controlpanel on the hosting-service). • Setting Access-Control-Allow-Origin in Dreamhost possible?

  Just wanted a confirmation for this: Firefox currently doesn't play well for picking custom fonts through a sub-domain via the font-face tag. Other browsers do this without any problems. A little research showed up saying that i am required to set the Access-Control-Allow-Origin as is shown in the link here: http://pastie.org/653265 Essentially i have my blog at kaushikgopal.com/blog and i was trying to access fonts that within this blog that are available at font.kaushikgopal.com. I tried changing the same in my .htaccess file but couldn't resolve the issue.(I placed a .htaccess file within the font sub-domain folder and directly pasted code from the above pastie link). I submitted a ticket to dreamhost asking for assistance and they were helpful in clearly stating "We do not support Access-Control-Allow-Origin on shared hosting servers". So i didn't go the sub-domain route for fonts. But i'm a little curious, has anyone tried this (with a dreamhost hosting account would be helpful)? Just want to confirm what the tech-support guy suggested is accurate and there's no other way. Thanks. • Django 404 page not showing up

  Hey all, I'm in the middle of putting up my first django application on shared hosting. This should be an easy thing, but I am just not seeing it. I tried to follow the directions of the django documentation, and created a 404.html page within my template folder. I just wrote "This is a 404 page." in the .html file. I also did the same thing for a 500.html page and wrote in it "This is a 500 page." However when I hit a 'bad page' I get a standard 404 page from the browser (Oops! This link appears to be broken. in Chrome) when I would expect "This is a 404 page." What's even more interesting is out of frustration I wrote {% asdfjasdf %} in the 404.html, and instead of getting the "Oops!..." error I get "This is a 500 page," so it definitely sees the 404.html template. Here's what I can confirm: Debug = False I am running apache on a shared hosting I have not done anything special with .htaccess and 404 errors. If I run with Debug = True, it says it's a 404 error. I am using FastCGI Anything else anyone think I could try? Thank you very much!

• Embedding a CMS in an MVC Web App

  I'm working on a website for searching for businesses, then displaying a listing page. We've been toying with the idea of letting the clients manage their listing page using an external CMS. I'm not sure how often this is done, or if it's even best practice. Ideally, we want to be able to setup a listing on our website, then give the clients access to an external CRM when they can manage their listing page. We then want to embed this custom page within our website, possibly using an iframe (which will come along with it's own set of complications). We'd like this integration to be as seamless as possible. I'd personally prefer it if we could directly inject the HTML into our own page and bypass an iframe all together, but I don't know of any CMS hosting services that provide the interface for such a thing. We've experimented a little with Squarespace, and we can get a fairly clean version of someone's page which would be well suited for an iframe. I'm wondering if anyone else has looked and integrating an external hosting CMS into a website (in this case, we're using ASP.NET MVC). We'd also want to automate the creation of accounts on this external CMS, so when a user signed up we could just point them to the website with some login details. I have no idea if anyone offers a service like this, but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We could host a service ourself too, but the aim is to have an external system that clients can use to manage their pages. Cheers, James

• Wordpress Rewrite Redirect Failure

  I'm helping a friend recover from the mess outsourcing a wordpress website caused him (mistake #1) and I have this weird error. The hosting he is using appears to be redirecting www.domain.com to domain.com (NFI why) automatically which works fine in every browser except IE (i know right!). So adding the first redirect fixed that, until I added the permalink redirect. Now when IE goes to an old wordpress link like http://www.domain.com/?p=520 the redirect fails. So it seems likely that IE is suffering from the same error (without the helpful error message). But I haven't a clue how to fix it. I am hoping that he will switch hosting companies but we will see. In the meantime any ideas?

  I'm new to web development although I'm confident in the roadmap for the front-end. I need direction on two things: Basic architecture Back-end technologies For architecture, what do I need to get started? From what I know, its: Get a domain name registered (godaddy?) Find a web host ??? anything else? or start developing the site? I don't think its that easy, there must be something I'm missing, right? For the back-end technologies, I have application development experience with Java and Python, but how likely is it to find a back-end hosting site that supports these languages over PHP? Is PHP a better choice? If I stick with what I know for the back-end, am I sabotaging myself later on? If I need help, how is the market for a python/java developer vs. a php developer? What do I need to know about databases? I have some basic SQL experience. Do hosting sites have limitations on the type of databases or bandwidth I need to worry about? I'm working through some of the common sites: StackOverflow, Sitepoint forums, Google, etc...are there other resources I should use?

• 404 Not Found When Requesting URI With Encoded Patameters

  I am pretty sure this is some problem with the Apache configuration because it used to work on the previous hosting provider with the same PHP/MySQL configuration. In my application, users are able to delete photos by going to URIs like this: http://example.com/my-account/remove-media/id/9/ret/my-account%252Fedit-album%252Fid%252F1 The paramater id is an id of a photo to be removed, the parameter ret is a relative URL where user should be redirected after the removal of the photo but after clicking on a link like that I get 404 Not Found error with the text: Not Found The requested URL /public/my-account/remove-media/id/9/ret/my-account/edit-album/id/1 was not found on this server. Though it used to work on my previous hosting provider so I guess it is just some easy Apache configuration issue? • Classic ASP - Email form with attached file - please help

  Hi Guys, Ive got abit of a problem ive got an email web form that send the input to an email address but what I now need is a file input field were the user can also send an image as an attachment. So contact name, logo (attachment). Ive been told in order to send the attachment it needs to be saved in a folder on my hosting before it can be sent. Ive spoken to the hosting company and they dont have anything in place to make this easier such as aspupload.   Following up on my last year's question on documentation, I now want to get started and try out Python-based Sphinx for putting together the developer documentation for a PHP CMS I've been working on. Instead of setting up Python locally on my workstation, I would like to run it on a publicly accessible web server from the start. All the web hosting packages I have access to run on the LAMP stack, and I'm reluctant to buy Python-based hosting. I am very interested in the Google App Engine, the free quotas they provide will do for me a hundred times over, and even if not, their pricing looks very reasonable. Now I have zero knowledge of Python - getting Sphinx to work would be my first contact with it - and very little time. As far as I understand, the platform and python libraries the App Engine provides are very compatible to a standard Python library but not identical. So my question is: Can Sphinx run on App Engine at all? Is installing Sphinx on the App Engine as straightforward as if I would install it on top of a normal Python installation? Or will the App Engine's environment require tweaking of the source code that I can't perform in reasonable time with my current level of Python? Should I be installing Sphinx on a local server and a "normal" Python stack instead first? Does anybody know any helpful How-to's, tutorials or other resources for this?

• Play framework does not return page and static content

  I'm using play framework in production for one of my web projects. From time to time Play does not render main page or does not return some of the static content files. I have attached few screenshots below. First screenshot displays firebug console, loading of the site is stucked at the beginning, when serving home page. Second screenshot display fiddler console, when 2 static resources are not loading. This issue is hard to reproduce, it happens 1 of 15 time, I have to delete cache data and reload page. (pressing CRTL-F5 in FF). Issue can be reproduced in most of the browsers. Initially, I was thinging that there is something wrong with hosting provider. But I have changed hosting provided and issue has not gone. Version of the play is 1.2.2. Play is running as standalone server. Not sure, but probably deploying Play to Jetty/Tomcat/Resin would help. Also I'm thinging about rewriting application to another stack (well-known for me - j2ee, spring, whatever) I have no idea how to debug and resolve this issue. Any clue ? Has anyone faced same issue with Play before ?

• What Do You Need To Write Your Own Blog Engine?

  I've been messing around with basic websites for a few years, using companies like www.Fasthosts.co.uk to do my web hosting. But I'd like to expand my skills from C++ and Java app programming into Web-based programming, and I think the best way to do that is with a project. I've chosen to go with a blog engine because it's a relative comprehensive yet non-complex project. I'm aware that you can just go to Blogger and bam! One blog. I've done that, so that I can at least have some content, and work out what I want to do with this blog. At the moment, I'm thinking I'll use it to chart my progress creating the blogging engine. But I have some questions. Do you need to be running your own server? Or is it more sensible in the short-term to use a hosting company? What types of language are worth considering? What's important to focus on from a design perspective? What unexpected problems might I encounter?
