• Compiled code spreadsheet-like cell management? (auto-updating)

  Okay so I am fully aware how spreadsheets manage cells, they build dependency graphs where when one cell changes it tells all the other cells that are dependent on it that it changed. So they can from there update. How they update I think involves either re-evaluating the formulas stored as strings, or re-evaluating the abstract syntax tree which I think is stored differently and might be faster. Something like that. What I'm looking to do is manage a few variables in my code so I don't have to update them in the correct way, which would be a nightmare. But I also want it much faster than spreadsheets. And since I'm not looking for any functionality as great as are in these spreadsheets, I just figured from that thought point that there has to be a way to have a very fast implementation of this functionality. Especially since I don't have to modify cells after compiling unless that would be an option. I'm very new to programming so I have no idea. One example might be to have a code-generator that generates code that does this for me. But I have no clue what the generated code would look like. Specifically, how exactly would variables inform others that they need to update, and what do those variables do to update? I'm looking for any kind of ideas. Programming is not my job but nonetheless I was hoping to have some kind of system like this that would greatly help me with some stuff. Of course I have been programming plenty lately so I can still program. I just don't have the full scope on things. I'm looking for any kind of ideas, thank you very much in advance! Also, please help me with the tags. I know C# and Java mainly and I'm hoping to implement this in either of those languages and I'm hoping this can stay in those tags. Forcing this into some kind of spreadsheet tag wouldn't be accurate.

  The RSSBus ADO.NET Providers can be used from many applications and development environments. In this article, we show how to use LINQPad to connect to QuickBooks using the RSSBus ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks. Although this example uses the QuickBooks Data Provider, the same process applies to any of our ADO.NET Providers. Create the Data Model Step 1: Download and install both the Data Provider from RSSBus and LINQPad (available at www.linqpad.net Step 2: Create a new project in Visual Studio and create a data model for it using the ADO.NET Entity Data Model wizard. Step 3: Create a new connection by clicking "New Connection", specify the connection string options, and click Next. Step 4: Select the desired tables and views and click Finish to create the data model. Step 5: Right click on the entity diagram and select 'Add Code Generation Item'. Choose the 'ADO.NET DbContext Generator'. Step 6: Now build the project. The generated files can be used to create a QuickBooks connection in LINQPad. Create the connection to QuickBooks in LINQPad Step 7:Open LINQPad and click 'Add New Connection'. Step 8: Choose 'Entity Framework DbContext POCO'. Step 9: Choose the data model assembly ('.dll') created by Visual Studio as the 'Path to Custom Assembly'. Choose the name of the custom DbContext, the path to the config file, and assign a name to the connection that will allow you to recognize its purpose. Step 10: Congratulations! • How To: Using SimpleMembserhipProvider with MySql Connector/Net.

  Now on Connector/Net 6.9 the users will have the ability to use SimpleMembership Provider on MVC4 templates. The configuration is very simple and also have compatibility with OAuth, in this post we'll explain step by step how to configure it in a MVC 4 Web Application. Requirements  The requirements to use SimpleMembership with Connector/Net are: Install Connector/Net 6.9, or download the No Install version. Net Framework 4.0 or greater. MVC 4  Visual Studio 2012 or newer version Creating and configuring a new project In this example we'll use VS2012 to create the project basis on the Internet Aplication template and using Entity Framework to manage the User model. Open VS 2012 and create a new project, we'll create a new MVC 4 Web Application and configure the project to use Net Framework 4.5. Type a name for the project and then click “Ok”. In the next dialog we'll choose the “Internet Application” template and use Razor as engine without creating a test project. Click “Ok” to continue. Now we have a new project with the templates necessaries to run a Web Application with the default values. We'll use the current files to continue working. If you have installed Connector/Net you can skip this step, if you don't have installed but you're planning to do it, please install it and continue with the next step. If you're using the No Install version of Connector/Net we'll need to add the references to our project, the assemblies needed are: MySql.Data, MySql.Data.Entities and MySql.Web. Be sure that the assemblies chosen match the Net Framework version used in our project and the MySql.Data.Entities is compatible with EF5 (EF5 is the default added by the project). Now open the “web.config” file, and under the <connectionStrings> node add a connection string that points to a MySql instance. We'll use the following connection configuration: <add name="MyConnection" connectionString="server=localhost;UserId=root;password=pass;database=MySqlSimpleMembership;" providerName="MySql.Data.MySqlClient"/> Under the node <system.web> we'll add the following configuration: <membership defaultProvider="MySqlSimpleMembershipProvider"><providers><clear/><add name="MySqlSimpleMembershipProvider" type="MySql.Web.Security.MySqlSimpleMembershipProvider,MySql.Web,Version=6.9.3.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" applicationName="MySqlSimpleMembershipTest" description="MySQLdefaultapplication" connectionStringName="MyConnection"  userTableName="UserProfile" userIdColumn="UserId" userNameColumn="UserName" autoGenerateTables="True"/></providers></membership> In the previous configuration the mandatory properties are: connectionStringName, userTableName, userIdColumn, userNameColumn and autoGenerateTables. If the other properties are not provided a default value is set to it but if the mandatory properties are not set a ProviderException will be thrown. The valid properties for the MySqlSimpleMembership are the same used for MySqlMembership plus the mandatory fields. UserTableName: Name of the table where will be stored the user, this table is independent from the schema generated by the provider and can be edited later by the user. UserId: name of the column that will store the id for the records in the userTableName. UserName : name of the column that will store the name/user for the records in the userTableName. The connectionStringName property must match a connection string defined in web.config file. Once the configuration is done in web.config, we need to be sure that our database context for the Users Table point to the right connection string. In our case we just need to update the class UsersContext in the file AcountModel.cs in the Models folder. The file also contains the UserProfile class which match the configuration for our UserTable. Other class that needs to be updated is the SimpleMembershipInitializer in the file InitializeSimpleMembershipAttribute.cs in the Filters folder. In that class we'll see a call to the method “WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection”, in that call is where we need to update the parameters to match our configuration. If the database that you configure in your connection string doesn't exists, you need to create it empty. Now we're ready to run our web application, press F5 or the Run button in the tool bar. You'll see the following screen: If you go to your database used by the application you'll see some tables created, now we are using SimpleMembership. Now create a user, click on “Register” at the top-right in the web page. Type your user name and password, then click on “Register”. You'll be redirected to the home page and you'll see the name of your user at the top-right page. If you take a look on the tables just created in your database you will find the data about the user you just register. In our case the tables that contains the information are UserProfile and Webpages_Membership.  Configuring OAuth Other option to access your website will be using OAuth, so you can validate an user using an external account like Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc. In this post we'll enable the authentication for Google account in our application. Go to the class AuthConfig.cs in the folder App_Start. In the method “RegisterAuth” uncomment the last line where is the call to the method “OauthWebSecurity.RegisterGoogleClient”. Run the application. Once the application is running click on “Login”. You will see at the right side the option to login using a Google account, click on “Google”.  You will be asked for Google credentials. If your login is successful you'll see a message asking for your approval to give permission to your site to access your information. Click on “Accept”. Now a page to register your user will be shown, click on “Register”. Now your new user is logged in in your application. You can take a look of the user information created in the tables  UserProfile and Webpages_OauthMembership. If you want to use another external option to authenticate users you must enable the client in the same class where we enable the Google authentication, but for others providers is mandatory to register your Application in their site. Once you have register your application they will give you a token/key and the id for your application, that information you're going to use it to register the client. Thanks for reading.

• PHP/MySQL Database application development tool

  I am an amateur PHP coder, and have built a couple of dozen projects from scratch (including fairly simple e-commerce systems with user authentication, PayPal integration etc - all coded by hand from a clean page. Have also done a price comparison engine that takes data from multiple sites etc.). But I am no expert with OO and other such advanced techniques - I just have a fairly decent grasp of the basics of data processing, logic, functions and trying to optimize code as much as possible. I just want to make this clear so you have some idea of where I'm coming from. I have a couple of fairly large new projects on my plate for corporate clients - both require bespoke database-driven applications with complex relationships, many tables and lots of different front-end functions to manipulate that data for the internal staff in these companies. I figured building these systems from scratch would probably be a huge waste of time. Instead, there must be tools out there that will allow me to construct MySQL databases and build the pages with things like pagination, action buttons, table construction etc. Some kind of database abstraction layer, or system generator, if you will. What tool do you recommend for such a purpose for someone at my level? Open source would be great, but I don't mind paying for something decent as well. Thanks for any advice.

• Removing spam external links after pharma hack?

  Back in February my work's site was attacked by a pharma hack at the shared hosting end. I managed to find the placed file and the reference to run it in one of our files. I deleted this file, deleted and redownloaded all of the plugins and themes and reinstalled Wordpress. However I could never find the database entries no matter what I have read up on. Searching for known entries or for drug names backwards etc. On the Google and Bing end I have managed to deny and delete the entries and cache of most if not all of the bad links that the hack managed to instantly SEO to death (why don't these guys work legit and make more money?) However the one thing that is remaining is external links on the homepage that are invisible except when the site is viewed in google cache or scanned with unmaskparasites.com (and says that the external links are safe even though they're obviously not!). http://www.UnmaskParasites.com/security-report/?page=kmcharityteam.co.uk All sorts of website scans say there's nothing wrong with it and I can't find the source of the links in the header or footer or anywhere in the theme. I've searched for the links in the database but no use there either and they change every day so really I'd have to be looking for a generator? Does anybody have any advice or a solution for removing these links? Thanks!

• What type of pattern would be used in this case

  I want to know how to tackle this type of scenario. We are building a person's background, from scratch, and I want to know, conceptually, how to proceed with a secure object pattern in both design and execution... I've been reading on Factory patterns, Model-View-Controller types, Dependency injection, Singleton approaches... and I can't seem to grasp or 'fit' these types of designs decisions into what I'm trying to do.. First and foremost, I started with having a big jack-of-all-trades class, then I read some more, and some tips were to make sure your classes only have a single purpose.. which makes sense and I started breaking down certain things into other classes. Okay, cool. Now I'm looking at dependency injection and kind of didn't really know what's going on. Example/insight of what kind of heirarchy I need to accomplish... class Person needs to access and build from a multitude of different classes. class Culture needs to access a sub-class for culture benefits class Social needs to access class Culture, and other sub-classes class Birth needs to access Social, Culture, and other sub-classes class Childhood/Adolescence/Adulthood need to access everything. Also, depending on different rolls, this class heirarchy needs to create multiple people as well, such as Family, and their backgrounds using some, if not all, of these same classes. Think of it as a people generator, all random, with backgrounds and things that happen to them. Ageing, death of loved ones, military careers, e.t.c. Most of the generation is done randomly, making calls to a mt_rand function to pick from most of the selections inside the classes, guaranteeing the data to be absolutely random. I have most of the bulk-data down, and was looking for some insight from fellow programmers, what do you think?

• Some hint to program a webservice "by subscription"

  I have some web sites programmed, I know to do it with python and PHP basically. Normally they are simple web sites, but now I want to provide REST web services but only for allowed users (allowed by me). I saw that a lot of services uses the "KEY" and "SECRET_KEY" concepts, which seems to be what I need (if I understand it right). My suppositions are: If I only do a GET service to retrieve, e.g., all my clients, without anymore, anyone can retrieve my clients without limitations. I will need some KEY generator to provide keys for my allowed users, so they can use my webservices. Only with a KEY is not enough: someone can steal a KEY and supplant my user (and this is the reason because exists a SECRET_KEY, right?). If all this is right, how can I make/use a system like that in my web services? Some open source example? Or maybe there are another easy solutions I'm not considering? My objective is to allow some users to use my web services.

• TechEd 2012: MVVM In XAML

  Paul Sheriff was a real character at the start of his MVVM in XAML session.  There was a lot of sarcasm and self deprecation going on prior to the .  That is never a bad way to get things rolling right after lunch.  Then things got semi-serious. The presentation itself had a number of surprises, but not all of them had to do with XAML.  When he flipped over his company’s code generation tool it took me off guard.  I am used to generator that create code for a whole project, but his tools were able to create different types of constructs on demand.  It also made it easier to follow what he was doing than some of the other demos I have seen this week where people were using code snippets. Getting to the heart of the topic I found myself thinking that I may have found my utopia for application development in MVVM.  Yes, I know there is no such thing, but this comes closer than any other pattern I have learned about.  This pattern allows the application to have better separation of concerns than I have seen before.  This is especially true since you can leverage data binding.  I’m not sure why it has taken me so long to find time for this subject. As Paul demonstrated using this pattern with XAML gives you multi-platform reusable code when you leverage common utility classes and ModelView classes.  The one drawback I see is that you have to go to the lowest common denominator between the platforms you want to support, but you always have to weigh the trade offs.   I have made a POS System for a client of mine using MS Access Server-Client approach. He asked me to brand his software to allow only a certain "number" of users (cashiers) to access the POS System, and must be determined to the license his client will buy. EX: 10 User License = 10 Cashiers ( not necessarily 10 users, it can be 30 users, shifting) = it means 10 PCs will be installed with the client software I made. How and where do I put the logic that will determine if it is licensed or not. What I have done: I have created a serial key generator using Name. Problem is it can be duplicated once you give than name+serial combination, it would still work. I am counting the number of users logged at a time. This could be problematic as I am using MSAccess and not MSSQL. I have scrapped this idea, He also asked me if I could just put serial+mac address combination. That I could do but he will have a hard time implementing it and selling it if he needs the mac address of every computers to be installed with my POS. I am at lost on what can I do. Would like to ask for tips and suggestions. Thank you.

  I am planning on making a (simple) procedural city generator using Java. I need ideas on whan algorithm to use for the layout, and the actual buildings. The city will mostly have skyscrapers, not really much complex stuff. For the layout I already have a simple algorithm implemented: Create a Map with java.awt.Point keys and Integer values. Fill it with all the points in the city's bounds with the value as -1 (unnassigned) Shuffle the map, and assign the 1st 10 of the keys IDs (from 1-10) Loop until all points have IDs: Loop though all points: Assign points next to an assigned point IDs of the point next to them, if 2 or more points border the point, then randomly choose which ID the point will get. You will end up with 10 random regions. Make roads bordering these regions. Fill the inside of each region with a randomly spaced and randomly rotated grid PROBLEM: This is not the fastest way to do it. What algorithm should I use for the layout. And what should I use to make each building's design? I don't even know how I'm going to do that yet (fractals maybe). I just need some ideas, not actual code.

• Compilation problem [closed]

  I am trying to compile a program called Triangle Mesh Generator. It is an open source code written in ANSI C. I need it to bo a callable lib so I am using a switch (#define) created by it's Author. However I get this error: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.6/../../../x86_64-linux-gnu/crt1.o: In function `_start': collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [triangle] Error 1 I am not sure why such an error occurs. Worth adding is that compiling it as a stand alone program is succesful. I am using GCC on 12.04. The lines quoted above constitute the total output. What I put in the terminal is just make in the proper folder. There are no other errors, warnings, or other messages. Link to the sources I found some additional instructions. • QR Codes and Short Links - Please Take A Look [closed]

  I'm looking for a way to create a QR Code and a shortened link when a form is submitted. I have the QR Code bit, but the link is too long for me and the QR Code looks scary and complicated. The way it works is; the user types in (in this instance) a contract number. Then, a folder is created on the server of that contract number. (www.mysite.com/QR/$contractnumber). Then, using PHP again, I create a QR Code through Google because I know that every QR code will be linking to the same place, just a different ending of the link. The only bit that changes is the $POST... I was wondering if there was a way to shorten the link before it goes to Google? It would have to be through php. The user enters the contact number in the form, then that number(usually around 5/6 digits) will be entered into a already existing command? I'm not an expert in anything, I just know some really random snippets of code... And HTML and CSS, of course. Any help would be appreciated and judging by the few days I have been searching this, I think it might help a few people in the future. I would also like to confirm that the solution can't be one of this visual URLShorteners. If it is, it just needs to be the back-end of it, built into a existing form and QR Generator. Simple?

• Dynamic object creation with HashMap

  I want to use a HashMap to dynamically create objects based on the key. I have a Random Map Generator that stores the maps in 3D Arrays of Type Integer[][][]. Upon creation of the actual map I iterate through this array and based on the Integer I want to create the right block. Example: Integer[][][] map ... map[6][6][6] = 3; 3 is a Earth-Block and now I want to initialize a new Block of this type and give it the right coordinates. Currently I store my Bindings from Integer to Class in a HashMap(Integer, String) and create my objects like that: int id = array[x][y][z]; String block_name = Blocks.map.get(id); Block block = (Block) Class.forName(block_name).newInstance(); block.setPosition(x,y,z); But I want to avoid newInstance() if possible. I've never worked that dynamically with Java before and I couldn't find a solution like changing the HashMap to (Integer, Class) or something.
