  • Can Debian identify rarely used packages?

    I'd like to find a tool that could tell me which Debian packages on my system have been rarely or never used, perhaps by looking at file lists and access times. This is to find candidates for deletion from my nearly full hard drive. I'm not very well informed about the rich ecosystem of desktop GUI tools (I use aptitude); does anyone know if one of those tools, or any other tool, can identify how recently a package has been used?

  • Convert all short (8.3) paths to long paths in the registry?

    Running FSUtil 8Dot3Name Scan /v /s C: gives you a list of potential 8.3 paths in the registry that are referring to your file system, but is there any tool that can actually convert those paths to long paths in the registry? I do understand this could break some programs, but I have backups so I'd be willing to give it a try. (I tried to make a tool like this myself, but it's harder than it looks, because of false positives and all the varieties of ways the path could be embedded.)

  • Server Room Protocols/Server Room Management

    Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc?   • Partition table is corrupt

    I have a corrupt the partition table on the laptop that is running Ubunutu 10.4. Before the partition table was corrupt I had the following partitions: 2 primary partitions: 1st - NTFS 2nd - Extended 4 logical partitons that are built within 2nd extended: 1st NTFS (68 Gib) 2nd Linux (19 Gib) 3rd Swap (1.4 Gib) 4th Linux (24 Gib) The physical order of these partitions was the following: ( 4th Linux ) - ( 1st NTFS ) - ( 2nd Linux ) - ( 3rd Swap ) The logical order of the partition was different: ( 1st NTFS ) - ( 2nd Linux ) - ( 3rd Swap ) ( 4th Linux ) NTFS partition was big and it resided between 2 Linux partitions, neither of these partitions had enough space to install Oracle 11g for my project with prof. Gamper and Markus Innerebner. Therefore, I decided to a) either move the NTFS partion to the left or b) remove it completely and extend partition where Linux resides. As I tool I have chosen GParted. But unfortunately it was not able to move the partition because he found that in NTFS partition there are some blocks that are referenced multiple times. Also it was not able to remove the partition neither, because in this case the partitions that follow it ( 2nd Linux ) - ( 3rd Swap ) have to be in his opinion also removed, because the organization of extended partition is a linked list. Since GParted was not able to do such thing I was trying to find another tool. I found diskdrake tool on PSLinuxOS distribution of linux. That tool silently deleted ( 1st NTFS ) partition and I thought that everything was fine. But diskdrake has damaged the partition in a way that I am not able either to boot from the hard disk nor to see the partitions with GParted and even with diskdrake itself! Fortunately I have a live CD of Ubuntu 8.10 and I am able to boot and see hard disk. I have 2 ideas how I can solve the problem: 1) Manually change disk partitions and point them to the correct partitions. 2) Create partition table with GParted that as much as possible is the same with the previous one I find the 2nd approach less time consuming but some data will be lost because of it is not possible to place borders of the partitions exactly how it was before. And moreover I am not sure if such approach would work, for example, if the OS is able to locate files after repartitioning. I feel like that it will but not 100% sure. Are there some ideas how the problem may be solved?

Is there any tool on Linux that supports diagramming in form similar to Windows PerfMon? I tried using IBM virtual assistant, but it works only on 32-bit, while I have 64-bit platform. Thanks.

    Hi, Similar to the print to pdf option, where we can choose PDF to be the output format in the print dialog box when printing something from a browser or other applications, I am searching for something which can print to a Power Point file. Is there any such plugin or tool? Also link to a relilable print to pdf tool would be helpful. This essentially would eliminate the export to power point option that the users are asking for in my Silverlight application. Thanks...

  • Server Density or Scout-like Services for Windows?

    Hi all. I've been very impressed with agent-based / SaaS-like monitoring services such as Scout and Server Density. They both provide very nice trending, alerting, and reporting capabilities for my *nix boxes, and I need to find something similar for Windows. Can anyone out there recommend such a tool? It is important that this tool is a centralized service in line with the aforementioned products, as the deployment environment is owned by a lean team with limited resources. Thanks!

    A client has inquired me for a DLP software to lock USB and CD Drives. I contacted few companies and the DLP tool needs a Domain from where the software can control the nodes. The client says that they have 55 machines in a WorkGroup and also has 1 server. I am not following what exactly is a WorkGroup and a Domain. The DLP tool specifications say that the network must have a Domain and Active Directory Services.

  • DFS "clobering" files

    We have DFS setup using the DFS Management Administrator Tool. I turned on replication in the Distributed File System Administrator Tool as well and this morning we lost tons of files from that share. Please explain to me why this was wrong and if there is anything that can be done to repair it. (No, we don't have backups. We have some shadow copies, but those were deleted as well. We have been using DFS as its own backup)

  • Windows 7 on Laptop: Show 3 power Profiles instead of just 2

    The only thing I miss from Vista on W7 is that, you can click the batery icon and select one of three power profiles without having to open the Energy option Window. Can I archieve this on W7 Without having to install a third party tool? I have tried one, but with so many bugs and problems, but I guess there are maybe one tool out there that works fine.     I am looking for a command-line tool for Unix (ideally, available in a Debian / Ubuntu package) for extracting all MIME parts from a multipart email message (or the body from a singlepart with an interesting content-type, for that matter). I have been using the mimeexplode tool which ships with the Perl MIME::Tools package, but it's not really production quality (the script is included as an example only, and has issues with what it regards as "evil" character sets) and I could certainly roll my own script based on that, but if this particular wheel has already been innovated, perhaps I shouldn't.

    Hi All, Is there such a tool that would look through a group of stored procedures for source code keywords? A client has a lot of business logic coded into their database and I need to find where it is using certain strings of text? I.E. what procedure contains 'was applied to their balance', so I can refactor that out into business logic. Does anyone know of such a tool? perhaps something from Red-Gate?
