• urllib alternative for iPhone

  hi, I am trying to create an iPhone application which in some point connects to the internet, fills an on-line form, fetches the resulting website, parses it and returns a string to the user. I want all this process to happen in the background. I know how to do this kind of things with python and urllib but in objc I can't find an alternative, from on-line search I found either sites that explain how to use webkit to retrieve webpages (I suppose this is for displaying them to the user) or how to parse an existing HTML file or string. Since I want the file to be retrieved from the internet and the whole process should be running in the background, neither of these solutions covers my needs.

• iPhone webapp: my ressources don't get cached

  Hello, First of all, I'd like to say I'm not using any off-line feature from HTML5. I have a web-application which runs on the iPhone. When viewing it from safari, everything works quite well. But when I launch the application from the home screen (to remove the navigation bar), it can be really slow. I checked the logs in Apache and it appears that Safari does a good work to cache the resources (css / js / images), with Apache answering "304 Not Modified" when needed. However, when the web app run as a "real" application (navigation bar hidden), those resources doesn't get cached and Apache the content has to be transferred over and over again (response code 200 Ok + content), resulting in a significantly slower page load. How can I prevent this behavior? Do I need to always run my webapp inside Safari, even when it's launched from the home screen? Thank you!

• Fullscreen iPhone animation from PNG

  Hi, I need in animation of sequence of more PNG files (300 png files and size is 320x480). I've try make it with 12 fps, but sometime iPhone 3g have lags... 3gs working fine. I think 2g working with lags always. I've use one UIImageView and loading images in NStimer callback by UIImage:imageWithContentOfFile. May be this is not best way to animation png files ? note: previously i've used ImageOptim to pack (or strip ??) all my images (from 20% to 80% of size strip). regards,

  Hi, I developed one database related application for iPhone device(SQlite database). Now i want to update that application with more features(I want to push an update for the same application). Here i am more concerned about the user data while pushing the update so my question is if i will push an update then does the update will clear all the data that is stored in .sqlite file? if this is case then how to push application update without modifying the previous data in the database file? • navigation between screens Iphone programming

  Hi, I don't know if my question will be clear or not, but i'm starting basic stuff with iphone programming, and i'm trying to understand how to go from a screen to another. lets say i have a screen with a "next page" button and another page with a "return" button. I have a general idea of how to do this, but I don't know how to put it together. I think I need an IBAction method for each button, and in each method a navigation controller with pushViewController. • issues using facebook iphone api to post image and text

  I have been trying to use the facebook iphone api to publish an image and some text from my app (i.e. using FBRequest call:@"facebook.stream.publish" with the appropriate params. I've found that the behavior is extremely erratic, as it first worked fine when I implemented it, then, completely stopped working (the request would fail and nothing would show up), and now sometimes posts only the text and most of the time posts only the image in a gallery style (returning a failure). I've read that it's something broken on Facebook's side, however, I see other people's games posting things periodically with images and text and wonder if I might be doing something fundamentally different that is much less reliable or stable. Has anyone encountered such an issue or has more familiarity with this?

  Writing an iphone app, and I'm getting my data from a REST API that returns JSON. My problem is, some of the data has special characters embedded and Im getting errors. Example: MartÌn Petite-RiviËre-Saint-FranÁois Here is my current code: NSString *jsonString = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:receivedData encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; NSMutableArray *tempResults = [[[jsonString JSONValue] objectForKey:@"getRegionResortsLastUpdatedResponse"] objectForKey:@"return"]; Whenever the data has special characters in it "jsonString" return "(null)", otherwise everything works fine. Is this something I can handle on my end, or does the API need to be modified to output the character codes?

  I would like to enroll my company in to the iPhone Developer Program for $99. I have a few questions, which I can't really find an answer to, because Apple aren't very detailed in their pages unless you actually registered. So here goes: 1.) Is the $99 paid yearly? 2.) It says when distributing free apps there's no fee, but if I want to distribute a $0.99 app, what is the fee then? Is it huge? Or..? 3.) Can I keep track of how many people bought my app anytime? 4.) Is there a page on the internet where I can read more about app store distribution that explains almost all the info I need to know? (Apple doesn't satisfy me on this) Thanks

  Hello. I wanted to know if it's possible to WRITE and COMPILE/TEST iPhone apps on a linux platform. I've been on google for a couple of days now, and people either talk about "Mac OS X only!", or "Develop jailbroke apps on Linux". My dev partner has a mac and has a certificate to sign the apps. I don't have a mac, but I will be doing most of the development. So what I want to do is simply develop/test the app in linux, and when it's finished, simply hand over the code to him, who will then compile the finalized app and sign it ready for submission to the app store. Could anyone tell me what linux tools I would need to accomplish this?

• One page of responsive site is blurry/fuzzy on iphone

  Here's a weird one. I'm developing a responsive site here: http://74.209.178.54:3000/index.html There are three pages built so far: the home page, the "Why" page, and the "Pricing" page. The Home and Why pages are just fine on my iPhone 4. The "Pricing" page is really blurry. And I don't just mean the images are blurry - absolutely everything is blurry: text, borders, backgrounds... Has anyone seen this before? Do you know what's happening?

The applications in these environments are rather small for unit testing to be written. • My app crashes on Iphone SDK 3.2

  Hi Guys, My app worked ok on iPhone SDK 3.1. However, when I try to run it in 3.2 simulator, I get the following error and it crashes: bool _WebTryThreadLock(bool), 0x5148280: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. When I debug it, it leads me to this peace of code: - (void)LoginViewToCheckView:(id)sender { CheckViewController *tempTestController = [[CheckViewController alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [tempTestController setDelegate:self]; [self setCheckViewController: tempTestController]; [tempTestController release]; [navigationController pushViewController:checkViewController animated:YES];} Other thing worth mentioning is maybe that I am calling this function from a separate thread. I have pushed the first view controller and used present modal view controller. Now a need to go back to the home page from the category page control but the view did load and view will appear wont work.   My iPhone app relies on a vendor's XML feed to provide data. But that feed is not locked down. The vendor could change the format of the XML at any time, although so far they've promised not to. Since I might want to tell my app to use a different URL for its data source, I'd like to set up a single "Command Central" Web page, on my own server, to direct the app to the correct data source. In other words, each time my app starts, in the background and unseen by the user, it would visit "http://www.myserver.com/iphoneapp_data_sources.xml" to retrieve the URL for retrieving data from my vendor. That way, if my vendor suddenly changes the exact URL or the XML feed that the app needs, I can update that Web page and ensure that all installations of the app are using the correct XML feed. Does anyone have any advice or examples showing this kind of approach? It seems as if this must be a common problem, but so far I haven't found a well-established design pattern that fits it.

• Rebuilding an Opensource Iphone Project but got too many errors

  Downloaded an opensource sample Iphone project and when I compiled, everything is OK. This project has alot of C files. So, I try to rebuilding this project from scratch just to see if I can duplicate it. I make sure all the inlcudes files there, the path is correct, all the libraries there. I check original project settings and make sure if they have any specific search path and I need to follow. Anyway, I follow the exact settings but this time my duplicated project got some 1500 errors. alot of them generated from inside those C files. So, what's wrong? everyone got some tips on that why I got so many errors? I followed everything I follow from the original project.

  Hey there, Recently I ran into a very strange issue: touching the screen of the iPhone and moving a finger around can eat up to 50% of my FPS. Yeah, I checked my code for possible bottlenecks – not the issue. The last resort I tried before writing this post – commenting out all the touch processing code and looking at FPS then. Results are: no touches – 58-60. Touching and moving the finger – 35-40 FPS instantly. The rendering is done in a separate thread, so that no main runloop events shall collide with it. However, it's very crushial for me (and the game I develop) to resolve this issue, because such FPS drop is really noticeable. Thank you for your help in advance. UPDATE: seems that setting rendering thread's priority to higher value helps a bit...

• iphone singleton object synchronization

  I'm working on an iphone app but this is probably a general question. I have a singleton Model class and there would be scenarios where multiple NSOperations (threads) would exist and work with the singleton object. If they all call the same method in this object, do i need to have some locking mechanism? Or can this method be executed only one at a time? I do not have a computer science background but my guess is that all threads would have their CALL to the same address (this method). Also can you please suggest a good beginner programming book that discusses general programming concepts. I don't have the brains for Knuth kinda books.

• iPhone OpenGL Template is cheating?

  XCode's OpenGL template seems to be cheating to solve this "stretched" viewport problem I've been trying to understand for the last 3 hours. In the iphone "OpenGL ES Application" template, the colorful square that bounces up and down on the screen is not really a square at all! ES1Renderer.m (the ES2 file as well) static const GLfloat squareVertices[] = { -0.5f, -0.33f, 0.5f, -0.33f, -0.5f, 0.33f, 0.5f, 0.33f, }; But it comes out looking square on the device/simulator due to the stretching/squashing effect of a non-square viewport. I tried to fix it by fiddling with glFrustumf() but that doesn't seem to change the aspect ratio. I was able to get things looking good (not-stretched) when I fed glViewport() with a 1:1 widht:height.. But this doesn't seem like the answer because it offsets the viewport placement. What's the right way to correct for this stretching and why doesn't XCode do it that way?

• iphone app photo upload to server from app threads

  I have an app that needs to upload a least 5 photos to a server using API call available with the server. For that I am planning to use threads which will take care of photo upload and the main process can go on with the navigation of views etc. What I cant decide is whether it is OK to spawn five separate threads in iphone or use a single thread that will do the upload. In the later cases obviously it will become quite slow. Basically an HTTP POST request will be made to the server with the NSMutableURLRequest object using NSCOnnection. More threads mean more complexity and sync issues, but I can try to write code as neat as possible if it means better performance than a single thread which is simple but is a real stopper if performance is considered. Anybody with any experience in this kinda app. ??
