• How to make nginx only respond to one domain?

  I am pretty new to nginx, I host my rails application on nginx+passenger. I want my website to be accessible to only one domain. So I set my nginx conf like the following: server { listen 80; server_name mydomain.com www.mydomain.com; root /var/deploy/myapp/current/public; passenger_enabled on; location ~* \.(js|css|png|jpg|jpeg|gif|ico)$ { expires 1y; add_header Cache-Control public; } } I specify the server_name directive, but still, it answers anything which points to this IP and I could see that in the access.log that it answers to other domain names. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

• Zip files way larger on a Mac using Finder than the 'zip' command.. 2x larger.

  I have a directory of JPEG's. Each one is roughly 90k, as reported by Photoshop when saving, and also reported by the command line function 'ls'.. When I get the properties for the file with Finder, it's double that, over 220k. Zipping it with finder will also package this bulk as well. Doing the "zip -v test.zip ./dir" command will make a MUCH smaller zip file. Zipping the files on windows also results in a much smaller file size as well, roughly the same to that of the unix zip command. File sizes are also reported correctly on windows. I can't find any mention of this anywhere, so I'm asking here.

• Should you archive documents before backing up to the cloud?

  I'm planning to add a cloud storage to my personal backup strategy. But now I wonder if it really is worth the trouble of compressing my documents and photos. The Open XML-format already have zip-compression and JPEG is a lossy image format. So there really isn't much benefit in compressing. 20Mb of documents become about 17Mb at the ULTRA preset of 7-zip. One benefit I can imagine is that you can shorten upload time by archiving the folders since it minimizes the number of requests that is needed to be sent to the server at upload and download. So what are your thoughts and experience in this issue? Should you archive your documents before backing them up to the cloud?

• Disk fragmentation when dealing with many small files

  On a daily basis we generate about 3.4 Million small jpeg files. We also delete about 3.4 Million 90 day old images. To date, we've dealt with this content by storing the images in a hierarchical manner. The heriarchy is something like this: /Year/Month/Day/Source/ This heirarchy allows us to effectively delete days worth of content across all sources. The files are stored on a Windows 2003 server connected to a 14 disk SATA RAID6. We've started having significant performance issues when writing-to and reading-from the disks. This may be due to the performance of the hardware, but I suspect that disk fragmentation bay be a culprit at well. Some people have recommended storing the data in a database, but I've been hesitant to do this. An other thought was to use some sort of container file, like a VHD or something. Does anyone have any advice for mitigating this kind of fragmentation?

• Sorting Files into Subfolders based on EXIF Date

  I have a huge directory from a HDD recovery that contains 70000+ JPEG files. I tried playing around with some AppleScripts, that I found, but had no luck. I already installed EXIFtool, which might be useful for this task. The current directory structure is as follows: dir001 - file0001.jpg ... - file9999.jpg dir002 - file0001.jpg ... - file9999.jpg ... dir070 - file0001.jpg - ... - file9999.jpg The files mostly have EXIF Data, but sometimes there are Files without metadata. Now I hope to be able to sort and rename these files into folders based on the date: 1999 - 1999 01 31 - 1999_01_31_-_22_59_59.jpg 2000 - 2000 05 20 - 2000_05_20_-_21_59_59.jpg - 2000_05_20_-_22_59_59.jpg I figured Applescript/Automator might come in handy for this, however every other solution would be welcome, too!

• Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

  Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller.   I recently built a simple web-app deployed over Tomcat. The app uses pretty standard session based security where a user who has logged in is given a session. Sessions work fine in Firefox and Chrome, but require the use of jsessionid in the URL for IE (tested 7 & 8), set to medium privacy. In IE 8, I tried to override cookie handling, setting "Allow all 3rd party cookies" and "Allow all session cookies"- no dice. However, when I run Tomcat on my local machine, IE accepts the cookie, and sessions work just fine. And now, for the HTTP headers. • Actionscript multiple file upload, with parameter passing is not working

I have created my own file upload flash app that has been working great for me up until this point. It uses PHP to upload the files and sends back a status message which gets displayed in a status box to the user. Now I have run into a situation where I need the HTML to pass a parameter to the Actionscript, and then to the PHP file using POST. • uploading zip files in codeigniter won't work

  I have created a helper that requires some parameters and should upload a file, the function works for images however not for zip files. • php curl image problem

  So I have wcf rest service which succesfuly runs from a console app, if I navigate to: http://localhost:8000/Service/picture/300/400 my image is displayed note the 300/400 sets the width and height of the image within the body of the html page.   Is there a limit on the size of image that can be encoded using the image file codecs available from .NET? I'm trying to encode images 4GB in size, but it simply does not work (or does not work properly i.e. writes out an unreadable file) with .bmp, .jpg, .png or the .tif encoders. When I lower the image size to < 2GB it does work with the .jpg but not the .bmp, .tif or .png. My next attempt would be to try libtiff because I know tiff files are meant for large images. What is a good file format for large images? or am I just hitting the file format limitations?   By default TFS 2008 Web Access has the limit of 100 record when you open any query in report mode. Even if you tried to export the query to excel or PDF you will only get first 100 record exported. • EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS after intiating a print sequence.

  MAC G4/1.5GHz/2GB/1TB+ OS10.4.11 Start up Volume has been erased/complete reinstall with updated software. Current problem only occurs when printing to an Epson Artisan 800 [USB as well as Ethernet connected] when using Macromedia FreeHand 10.0.1.67. All other apps/printers work fine. Memory has been removed/swapped/reinstalled several times, CPU was changed from 1.5GB to 1.3GB. Page(s) will print, but application quits within a second or two after selecting "print." Apple has never replied, Epson hasn't a clue, and I am befuddled!! Perhaps there is GURU out their who and see a bigger-better picture and understands how to interpret all of this stuff. If so, it would be a terrific pleasure to get a handle on how to cure this problem or get some A M M U N I T I O N to fire in the right direction. I thank you in advance.
