  • Time Application Startup

    - by Clinton Blackmore
Is there anyway to time how long it takes an Application to start up on the Mac? We were getting reports of Word 2008 taking a half-hour to launch, and, while we think we've resolved the problem, it would be nice, in the future, to be able to: verify the veracity of such statements, and see if any of our changes make a difference.

I've got an environment with several IIS 6 web servers hosting hundreds of apps (dozens of sites, hundreds of virtual directories) all with a myriad of different configurations belonging to dozens of different developers (all deploying apps willy nilly). Is there some sort of managed software solution that will centralize management of all my IIS6 environments provide some inventory functionality allow for reporting or querying of said application inventory enforce and automate some sort of deployment process?

  • Problem deploying GWT application on apache and tomcat using mod_jk

    - by Colin
I'm trying to deploy a GWT app on Apache using mod_jk connector. I have compiled the application and tested it on tomcat on the address localhost:8080/loginapp and it works ok. However when I deploy it to apache using mod_jk I get the starter page which gives me a login form but trying to login I get this error 404 Not Found Not Found The requested URL /loginapp/loginapp/login was not found on this server Looking at the apache log files i see this [Thu Jan 13 13:43:17 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] client denied by server configuration: /usr/local/tomcat/webapps/loginapp/WEB-INF/ [Thu Jan 13 13:43:26 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: /usr/local/tomcat/webapps/loginapp/loginapp/login, referer: http://localhost/loginapp/LoginApp.html The mod_jk configurations on my apache2.conf file are as follows LoadModule jk_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_jk.so JkWorkersFile /etc/apache2/workers.properties JkLogFile /var/log/apache2/mod_jk.log JkLogLevel info JkLogStampFormat "[%a %b %d %H:%M:%S %Y] " JkOptions +ForwardKeySize +ForwardURICompat -ForwardDirectories JkRequestLogFormat "%w %V %T" <IfModule mod_jk.c> Alias /loginapp "/usr/local/tomcat/webapps/loginapp/" <Directory "/usr/local/tomcat/webapps/loginapp/"> Options Indexes +FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Allow from all </Directory> <Location /*/WEB-INF/*> AllowOverride None deny from all </Location> JkMount /loginapp/*.html loginapp My workers.properties file is as follows workers.tomcat_home=/usr/local/tomcat workers.java_home=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun ps=/ worker.list=loginapp worker.loginapp.type=ajp13 worker.loginapp.host=localhost worker.loginapp.port=8009 worker.loginapp.cachesize=10 worker.loginapp.cache_timeout=600 worker.loginapp.socket_keepalive=1 worker.loginapp.recycle_timeout=300 worker.loginapp.lbfactor=1 And this is my servlet mappings for my app on the application's web.xml <servlet> <servlet-name>loginServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>com.example.loginapp.server.LoginServiceImpl</servlet-class> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>loginServlet</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/loginapp/login</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <servlet> <servlet-name>myAppServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>com.example.loginapp.server.MyAppServiceImpl</servlet-class> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>myAppServlet</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/loginapp/mapdata</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> Ive tried everything and it seems to still elude me. • open source web application for viewing .ics calendars

    - by aaron
I need an open source web application that allows users to view .ics calendars I am hosting a calendar with DAViCal, and users can view/edit calendars with their own clients (like Apple iCal or Mozilla Sunbird), but I want a web app that will display the public calendars so people w/o a user account can view the calendar just by visiting a URL. Requirements: Open source web app: something I can host right along with DAViCal Human-readable calendar: i.e. it has a day/week/month view to visualize calendar events

  • Cannot change default application association of certain file types

    - by H.B.
After associating my MP3 files with MPlayer i can no longer change that association using the Choose default program... dialogue, the Always use this [...] Checkbox is always greyed out (Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program does not let me change it either). That also happened for MP4s but not for MKVs for example, and if i associate my MP3s with other applications like VLC it does not get blocked. I would really like to know why that is and if i can avoid this beforehand (thankfully i know ways to fix it afterwards already). Edit: Another obervation: The blocking programs (i managed to block it with an association to Visual Studio as well) do not appear in the Recommended Programs of the open-with-dialogue (And the explorer said: "The current program is not recommended, but i won't let you change it, ha!"). Edit: A screenshot as requested: As you can see on the top left (if you know the icon of MPlayer), the file is currently associated with MPlayer. Edit: Ways to fix it (Note: This question is not about fixing it) Using the Default Programs Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs, select WMP, Choose defaults for this program, check .mp3 This should reassociate the files with WMP and you can create a new association in the explorer. Using the registry (As always, keep your hands off it unless you know what you are doing or if you are fine with accidentally breaking your system) HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > FileExts > .mp3 Here you could for example clean up the open-with-list, and the current default program seems to be saved here as well in the key UserChoice, there you can change the ProgId string to another application, you can associate it with WMP by entering WMP11.AssocFile.MP3 or just pick another application right away. You may need to mess with permissions on the key though, if you cannot change the ProgId value.

  • Scaling a video processing application on EC2?

    - by Stpn
I am approaching the need to scale a video-processign application that runs on EC2. So far the setup is one machine: Backbonejs frontend Rails 3.2 Postgresql Resque + S3 for storage The flow of the app is as follows: 1) Request from frontend. Upload a video. 2) Storing video 3) Quering external APIs. 4) Processing / encoding videos. 5) Post to frontend. I can separate the backend and frontend without any problems, but when it comes to distributing the backend between several servers I am a bit puzzled. I can probably come up with a temporary solution (like just duplicating apps making several instances), but since I don't really have expertise in backend system administration, there can be some fundamental mistakes.. Also I would rather have something that is scalable. I wonder if anyone can give some feedback on the following plan: A) Frontend machine. Just frontend, talks to backend via REST Api of sorts. B) Backend server (BS), main database. Gets request from 1), posts to 2) saves uploads to 3) C) S3 storage. D) Server for quering APIs. Basically just a Resque workers, that post info back to 2) E) Server for video encoding. Processes videos uploaded on 3) and uploads them back. So I will have: A)frontend \ \ B)MAIN_APP/DB ----- C)S3 Storage (Files) / \ / / \ / D)ExternalAPI_queries E)Video_Processing (redundant DB) (redundant DB) All this will supposedly talk to each other via HTTP requests. My reason for this is that Video Processing part is really the most resource-intensive and I would just run barebones application that accepts requests and starts processing them. Questions: 1) In this setup I will have the main database at B) and all other servers will communicate with it via HTTP requests (and store duplicates of databases also I guess..for safety reasons). Is it the right approach or should I have 1 database that everyone connects to (how then?) 2) Is it a good idea to separate API queries from Video Processing part? Logically they are very close (processing is determined by the result of API queries), but resource-wise Video Processing is waaay more intensive. 3) what should I use to distribute calls between backend apps based on load?

  • Open application with lowered privileges

    - by GP89
I have a mac installer which runs as root with pre and post install bash scripts. At the end of the post install script I launch the application which inherits and opens as root. Is there a way I can lower the permissions back down to the user that ran the installer and then open the app? Or a more hackish way I can set the app to open in some scheduler from the script, which then gets opened by the scheduler which would have the users permissions

  • Log ports opened by an application

    - by Simon A. Eugster
I'm searching for something like: tcpdump -p PID # But tcpdump does not know the PID or lsof -i --continuous # But lsof just runs and exits, no «live logging» to log which connections an application opens. In my case, I want to find out to which port git connects when committing. This happens in a fraction of a second, so I cannot use lsof. If there is a lot of traffic, filtering by PID or process name would be useful.
