  • List symlinks in specific relative directories

    - by Clinton Blackmore
I have a server that shares out user home folders over the network. Each user has a Cache folder. Sometimes a symlink is used to redirect this folder to the hard drive of whichever machine they are using (and sometimes that doesn't work and they have a broken symlink [which is a matter for another day].) I'm trying to find out which users have symlinks and which don't. Within the shared folder, to get to the Cache folder you would substitute folders like so: $GRADE/$USERNAME/Library/Caches Right now I'm searching to see which users have symlinks and which do not. I've come up with: cd /path/to/shared/home/folders sudo find . -name "Caches" -exec ls -ld {} \; and get results like this: lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 name0 ES_Students 27 Jan 18 11:05 ./CES_Grade_03/name0/Library/Caches -> /tmp/name0/Library/Caches drwx------ 11 name1 ES_Students 374 Dec 8 15:44 ./CES_Grade_03/name1/Library/Caches lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 name2 ES_Students 27 Feb 23 14:27 ./CES_Grade_03/name2/Library/Caches -> /tmp/name2/Library/Caches drwx------ 17 name3 ES_Students 578 Jan 25 11:13 ./CES_Grade_03/name3/Library/Caches drwx------ 12 name4 ES_Students 408 Mar 22 13:09 ./CES_Grade_03/name4/Library/Caches but it nags at me that there must be a better way. Yes, it is good enough, and a one-off task, but I want to know how to do it right! Surely, I should be able to do something like: cd /path/to/shared/home/folders sudo ls -ld **/**/Library/Caches I'm afraid that I don't know the proper syntax or if there is a recursive folder-replacing wildcard format in bash, and my google-fu failed me. So, how do I properly formulate the search?

  • Trying to delete a directory stored on a WIndows server, mounted on a mac

    - by AdamG
I am trying to delete a directory stored on a Windows 2008 R2 server, mounted on a Mac as network home (10.8.5). The directory was created by Safari and stores temporary internet files. I need to be able to delete this folder on logout from a Mac bash script. • Taking a screenshot from within a Silverlight #WP7 application

    - by Laurent Bugnion
Often times, you want to take a screenshot of an application’s page. There can be multiple reasons. For instance, you can use this to provide an easy feedback method to beta testers. I find this super invaluable when working on integration of design in an app, and the user can take quick screenshots, attach them to an email and send them to me directly from the Windows Phone device. However, the same mechanism can also be used to provide screenshots are a feature of the app, for example if the user wants to save the current status of his application, etc. Caveats Note the following: The code requires an XNA library to save the picture to the media library. To have this, follow the steps: In your application (or class library), add a reference to Microsoft.Xna.Framework. In your code, add a “using” statement to Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Media. In the Properties folder, open WMAppManifest.xml and add the following capability: ID_CAP_MEDIALIB. The method call will fail with an exception if the device is connected to the Zune application on the PC. To avoid this, either disconnect the device when testing, or end the Zune application on the PC. While the method call will not fail on the emulator, there is no way to access the media library, so it is pretty much useless on this platform. This method only prints Silverlight elements to the output image. Other elements (such as a WebBrowser control’s content for instance) will output a black rectangle. The code public static void SaveToMediaLibrary( FrameworkElement element, string title) { try { var bmp = new WriteableBitmap(element, null); var ms = new MemoryStream(); bmp.SaveJpeg( ms, (int)element.ActualWidth, (int)element.ActualHeight, 0, 100); ms.Seek(0, SeekOrigin.Begin); var lib = new MediaLibrary(); var filePath = string.Format(title + ".jpg"); lib.SavePicture(filePath, ms); MessageBox.Show( "Saved in your media library!", "Done", MessageBoxButton.OK); } catch { MessageBox.Show( "There was an error. Please disconnect your phone from the computer before saving.", "Cannot save", MessageBoxButton.OK); } } This method can save any FrameworkElement. Typically I use it to save a whole page, but you can pass any other element to it. On line 7, we create a new WriteableBitmap. This excellent class can render a visual tree into a bitmap. Note that for even more features, you can use the great WriteableBitmapEx class library (which is open source). On lines 9 to 16, we save the WriteableBitmap to a MemoryStream. The only format supported by default is JPEG, however it is possible to convert to other formats with the ImageTools library (also open source). Lines 18 to 20 save the picture to the Windows Phone device’s media library. Using the image To retrieve the image, simply launch the Pictures library on the phone. The image will be in Saved Pictures. From here, you can share the image (by email, for instance), or synchronize it with the PC using the Zune software. Saving to other platforms It is of course possible to save to other platforms than the media library. For example, you can send the image to a web service, or save it to the isolated storage on the device. To do this, instead of using a MemoryStream, you can use any other stream (such as a web request stream, or a file stream) and save to that instead. Hopefully this code will be helpful to you! • Does the ulkJSON library have limitations when dealing with base64 in Delphi 7?

    - by Da Gopherboy
I'm working on a project that is using Delphi 7 to consume RESTful services. We are creating and decoding JSON with the ulkJSON library. Up to this point I've been able to successfully build and send JSON containing a base64 string that exceed 5,160kb. I can verify that the base64 is being received by the services and verify the integrity of the base64 once its there. In addition to sending, I can also receive and successfully decode JSON with a smaller (~ 256KB or less) base64. However I am experiencing some issues on the return trip when larger (~1,024KB+) base64 is involved for some reason. Specifically when attempting to use the following JSON format and function combination: JSON: { "message" : "/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQEAYABgAAD...." } Function: function checkResults(JSONFormattedString: String): String; var jsonObject : TlkJSONObject; iteration : Integer; i : Integer; x : Integer; begin jsonObject := TlkJSONobject.Create; // Validate that the JSONFormatted string is not empty. // If it is empty, inform the user/programmer, and exit from this routine. if JSONFormattedString = '' then begin result := 'Error: JSON returned is Null'; jsonObject.Free; exit; end; // Now that we can validate that this string is not empty, we are going to // assume that the string is a JSONFormatted string and attempt to parse it. // // If the string is not a valid JSON object (such as an http status code) // throw an exception informing the user/programmer that an unexpected value // has been passed. And exit from this routine. try jsonObject := TlkJSON.ParseText(JSONFormattedString) as TlkJSONobject; except on e:Exception do begin result := 'Error: No JSON was received from web services'; jsonObject.Free; exit; end; end; // Now that the object has been parsed, lets check the contents. try result := jsonObject.Field['message'].value; jsonObject.Free; exit; except on e:Exception do begin result := 'Error: No Message received from Web Services '+e.message; jsonObject.Free; exit; end; end; end; As mentioned above when using the above function, I am able to get small (256KB and less) base64 strings out of the 'message' field of a JSON object. But for some reason if the received JSON is larger than say 1,024kb the following line seems to just stop in its tracks: jsonObject := TlkJSON.ParseText(JSONFormattedString) as TlkJSONobject; No errors, no results. Following the debugger, I can go into the library, and see that the JSON string being passed is not considered to be JSON despite being in the format listed above. The only difference I can find between calls that work as expected and calls that do not work as expect appears to be the size of base64 being transmitted. Am I missing something completely obvious and should be shot for my code implementation (very possible)? Have I missed some notation regarding the limitations of the ulkJSON library? Any input would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance stack!

  • expecting tASSOC in a Rails file

    - by steven_noble
    I'm sure I've done something stupid here, but I just can't see it. I call the breadcrumb method in the application view. app/helpers/breadcrumbs_helper.rb says: module BreadcrumbsHelper def breadcrumb @crumb_list = [] drominay_crumb_builder project_crumb_builder content_tag(:div, :id => "breadcrumbs", @crumb_list.map { |list_item| crumb_builder(list_item) }) end def crumb_builder(list_item) if list_item == @crumb_list.last content_tag(:span, list_item['body'], :class => list_item['crumb']) else body = ["list_item['body']", "&nbsp;&#x2192;&nbsp;"].join link_to(body, list_item['url'], :class => list_item['crumb']) end end def drominay_crumb_builder list_item = Hash.new list_item['body'] = "Drominay" list_item['url'] = "root" @crumb_list << list_item end def project_crumb_builder end end Why oh why am I getting this "expecting tASSOC" error?   • Need help understanding Generics, How To Abstract Types Question.

    - by kmacmahon
I could use some really good links that explain Generics and how to use them. But I also have a very specific question, relater to working on a current project. Given this class constructor: public class SecuredDomainViewModel<TDomainContext, TEntity> : DomainViewModel<TDomainContext, TEntity> where TDomainContext : DomainContext, new() where TEntity : Entity, new() And its creation this way: DomainViewModel d; d = new SecuredDomainViewModel<MyContext, MyEntityType>(this.context, selectedProtectedItem); Assuming I have 20 EntityTypes within MyContext, is there any easier way to call the constructor without a large switch statement? Also, since d is DomainViewModel and I want to access methods for SecuredDomainViewModel, it seems I need to do this: if (((SecuredDomainViewModel<MyContext, MyEntityType>)d).IsBusy) But again "MyEntityType" could actually be one of 20 types. Is there anyway to write these types of statements where MyEntityType is returned from some sort of Reflection?

  • Auth problem on Facebook using Ruby/sinatra/frankie/facebooker

    - by user84584
Hello guys, I'm using sinatra/frankie/facebooker to prototype something simple to test the facebook api, i'm using mmangino-facebooker the more recent version from github and I cloned the most recent version of frankie. I'm using sinatra 0.9.6. My main code is as simple as possible: before do ensure_application_is_installed_by_facebook_user @user = session[:facebook_session].user @photos = session[:facebook_session].get_photos(nil,@user.uid,nil) end get "/" do erb :index end get "/:uid/:image" do |uid, image| @photo_selected = session[:facebook_session].get_photos([image.to_i],nil,nil) erb :selected end The index page just renders a link to the other one (identified by regex "/:uid/:image") however I always get an error when it's trying to render the one identified by regex "/:uid/:image" Facebooker::Session::MissingOrInvalidParameter: Invalid parameter /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/parser.rb:610:in `process' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/parser.rb:30:in `parse' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/service.rb:67:in `post' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/session.rb:600:in `post_without_logging' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/session.rb:611:in `post' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/logging.rb:20:in `log_fb_api' /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/benchmark.rb:308:in `realtime' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/logging.rb:20:in `log_fb_api' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/session.rb:610:in `post' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mmangino-facebooker-1.0.50/lib/facebooker/session.rb:198:in `secure!' ./config/frankie/lib/frankie.rb:66:in `secure_with_token!' ./config/frankie/lib/frankie.rb:44:in `set_facebook_session' ./config/frankie/lib/frankie.rb:164:in `ensure_authenticated_to_facebook' ./config/frankie/lib/frankie.rb:169:in `ensure_application_is_installed_by_facebook_user' I've no idea why, it seems to be related with the auth token I guess.. • New Windows 7 Libraries created keep disappearing

    - by Sean
I've just got a new laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional edition. One of the new features of Windows 7 is Libraries. I'm familiar with how this works and am trying to create my own library called 'Work' to include all my work folders on my computer. However every time I create a new custom Library, after I rename it, it disappears from my Library menu. Each time I click Libraries in the Explorer, I keep seeing the same 4 default libraries, I.e. Documents, Pictures, Music, and Video. So when I try to create a new Library called 'Work' again, I get a pop up message "Do you want to rename New library to Work (2).Library-Microsoft?" Which means that my original work library still exists but for some reason I can't see it. Can someone please help me figure out why this is happening?

  • Jets3t on Android

    - by Chubbs
Hey guys, I am trying to use the Jets3t library within an Android application, and I keep getting errors with the Rest service when I use the library. 04-27 16:47:39.491: ERROR/S3Service(225): Couldn't initialize a sax driver for the XMLReader I have tried to include the Xerces library and the Crimson library, and it dont play well. I get this error: Attempt to include a core class (java.* or javax.*) in something other than a core library. It is likely that you have attempted to include in an application the core library (or a part thereof) from a desktop virtual machine. This will most assuredly not work. At a minimum, it jeopardizes the compatibility of your app with future versions of the platform. It is also often of questionable legality. If you really intend to build a core library -- which is only appropriate as part of creating a full virtual machine distribution, as opposed to compiling an application -- then use the "--core-library" option to suppress this error message. Is there something I can do to get it working ?

  • Understanding Javascript's difference between calling a function, and returning the function but executing it later.

    - by Squeegy
I'm trying to understand the difference between foo.bar() and var fn = foo.bar; fn(); I've put together a little example, but I dont totally understand why the failing ones actually fail. var Dog = function() { this.bark = "Arf"; }; Dog.prototype.woof = function() { $('ul').append('<li>'+ this.bark +'</li>'); }; var dog = new Dog(); // works, obviously dog.woof(); // works (dog.woof)(); // FAILS var fnWoof = dog.woof; fnWoof(); // works setTimeout(function() { dog.woof(); }, 0); // FAILS setTimeout(dog.woof, 0); Which produces: Arf Arf undefined Arf undefined On JSFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/D6Vdg/1/ So it appears that snapping off a function causes it to remove it's context. Ok. But why then does (dog.woof)(); work? It's all just a bit confusing figuring out whats going on here. There are obviously some core semantics I'm just not getting.

  • MS Access 2003 - Help understanding the structure of mdb, mde and be.....

    - by Justin
Hi. I was just wanting some explanation as to what is going on once you have split your tables out into a back end file, and set an mde out for use. When a user accesses the mde, is the mdb still required to get to the tabes (or in order to make it work)? Let say I put these access apps on a shared drive for folks to use. If I split the be end on to the shared drive, and placed the mde on the shared drive, would I the mdb have to exist for that version mde to work (communicate with the tables)? Or does the mde sort of speak to the mdb which speaks to the tables? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks

  • Understanding CABasicAnimation when spinning an object from a random angle....

    - by user157733
I have spent ages trying to figure this out and I am still having problems. I want to rotate an image a random number of time - say 5 and a bit - then have it stop. I then want to rotate it again FROM ITS STOPPED POSITION. I am having difficulty with this so maybe someone can advise me on the right way to do it. Ok so I am using a CABasicAnimation for the spin like this... CABasicAnimation* rotationAnimation; rotationAnimation = [NSNumber numberWithFloat: 0.0]; rotationAnimation.toValue = [NSNumber numberWithFloat: M_PI * 1.0]; rotationAnimation.duration = 100; rotationAnimation.cumulative = YES; rotationAnimation.repeatCount = 5.2; rotationAnimation.removedOnCompletion = NO; rotationAnimation.fillMode = kCAFillModeForwards; [myView.layer addAnimation:rotationAnimation forKey:@"rotationAnimation"]; This works fine. I use a animationDidStop function to transform the image to the new angle so that it actually in the new position (not just appearing that way). This is where my problems start. I have tried the following... removing the toValue line which means the animation starts from where it currently is but when the animation block is repeated it jumps back to this start position every time the block is run storing the value of the end rotation and using this in the toValue so the 2 lines of code become... rotationAnimation = [NSNumber numberWithFloat: previousVal]; rotationAnimation.toValue = [NSNumber numberWithFloat: (M_PI * 1.0)+previousVal]; when I do this the animation still jumps because it is flicking back to the previousVal everytime the block is repeated Therefore my final thought is to check to see if the image is at zero, if not then rotate it to zero, then impliment the block of code to spin multiple times. This seems complicated but is this the ONLY way to achieve this? I am concerned about getting the timings smooth with this method. Any suggestions would be amazing! Thanks

  • Virtual Lan on the Cloud -- Help Confirm my understanding?

    - by marfarma
[Note: Tried to post this over at ServerFault, but I don't have enough 'points' for more than one link. Powers that be, move this question over there.] Please give this a quick read and let me know if I'm missing something before I start trying to make this work. I'm not a systems admin professional, and I'd hate to end up banging my head into the wall if I can avoid it. Goals: Create a 'road-warrior' capable star shaped virtual LAN for consultants who spend the majority of their time on client sites, and who's firm has no physical network or servers. Enable CIFS access to a cloud-server based installation of Alfresco Allow Eventual implementation of some form of single-sign-on ( OpenLDAP server ) access to Alfresco and other server applications implemented in the future Given: All Servers will live in the public internet cloud (Rackspace Cloud Servers) OpenVPN Server will be a Linux disto, probably Ubuntu 9.x, installed on same server as Alfresco (at least to start) Staff will access server applications and resources from client sites, hotels, trains, planes, coffee shops or their homes over various ISP, using their company laptops or personal home desktops. Based on my Research thus far, to accomplish this, I'll need: OpenVPN with Bridging Enabled to create a star shaped "virtual" LAN http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/miscellaneous/76-ethernet-bridging.html A Road Warrior Network Configuration, as described in this Shorewall article (lower down the page) http://www.shorewall.net/OPENVPN.html Configure bridge addressesing (probably DHCP) http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/faq.html#bridge-addressing Configure CIFS / Samba to accept VPN IP address http://serverfault.com/questions/137933/howto-access-samba-share-over-vpn-tunnel Set up Client software, with keys configured for access (potentially through a OpenVPN-Sa client portal) http://www.openvpn.net/index.php/access-server/download-openvpn-as/221-installation-overview.html

  • Visual Studio 2005 to VS 2008

    - by Adi
hi all, I am a newbie in working on VS IDE and have not much experience in how the different libraries and files are linked in it. I have to build a OpenCV project which was made in VS2005 by one of my colleagues into VS2008. The project is for blob detection. Following is what he has to say in readme : Steps to use the library (using MSVC++ sp 5): 1 - open the project of the library and build it 2 - in the project where the library should be used, add: 2.1 In "Project/Settings/C++/Preprocessor/Additional Include directories" add the directory where the blob library is stored 2.2 In "Project/Settings/Link/Input/Additional library path" add the directory where the blob library is stored and in "Object/Library modules" add the cvblobslib.lib file 3- Include the file "BlobResult.h" where you want to use blob variables. 4- To see an example on using the blob library, see the file example.txt inside the zip file. NOTE: Verify that in the project where the cvblobslib.lib is used, the MFC Runtime Libraries are not mixed: Check in "Project-Settings-C/C++-Code Generation-Use run-time library" of your project and set it to Debug Multithreaded DLL (debug version ) or to Multithreaded DLL ( release version ). 2 Check in "Project-Settings-General" how it uses the MFC. It should be "Use MFC in a shared DLL". NOTE: The library can be compiled and used in .NET using this steps, but the menu options may differ a little NOTE2: In the .NET version, the character sets must be equal in the .lib and in the project. [OpenCV yahoo group: Msg 35500] Can anyone explain me , how to go about in doing this in VS2008. I would also appreciate if someone can explain me how the different libraries are linked , what is Debug, What is Release and all in a Visual Studio project folder we have.\ Thanks in advance Aditya

I noticed that if I use certain Smarty tags in my template, the app doesn't work and I see an error message, similar to this: Plugin by name 'Html_select_date' was not found in the registry; used paths: default_views_helpers_: /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/application/modules/default/views/helpers/ OX_OXP_UI_View_Helper_: /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/application/../library/OX/OXP/UI/View/Helper/ OX_UI_View_Helper_: /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/application/../library/OX/UI/View/Helper/ Zend_View_Helper_: Zend/View/Helper/ (stack trace) The stack trace looks like this: #0 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/Zend/View/Abstract.php(1117): Zend_Loader_PluginLoader-load('Html_select_dat...') #1 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/Zend/View/Abstract.php(568): Zend_View_Abstract-_getPlugin('helper', 'html_select_dat...') #2 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/OX/UI/Smarty/SmartyWithViewHelper.php(25): Zend_View_Abstract-getHelper('html_select_dat...') #3 /openx/var/templates_compiled/%2Fdefault%2Fviews%2Fscripts%2Findex%2Fview-reports.html^%%E8^E80^E80B56F2%%view-reports.html.php(38): OX_UI_Smarty_SmartyWithViewHelper-callViewHelper('html_select_dat...', Array) #4 /openx/lib/smarty/Smarty.class.php(1274): include('/openx...') #5 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/OX/UI/View/SmartyView.php(103): Smarty-fetch('/openx...') #6 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/Zend/View/Abstract.php(832): OX_UI_View_SmartyView-_run('/openx...') #7 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/OX/UI/View/SmartyView.php(151): Zend_View_Abstract-render('index/view-repo...') #8 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/OX/UI/View/Helper/WithViewScript.php(23): OX_UI_View_SmartyView-render('index/view-repo...') #9 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/application/modules/default/views/helpers/ViewReports.php(5): OX_UI_View_Helper_WithViewScript::renderViewScript('index/view-repo...', Array) #10 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/application/modules/default/controllers/IndexController.php(98): Default_Views_Helpers_ViewReports-renderPage() #11 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/Zend/Controller/Action.php(512): IndexController-viewReportsAction() #12 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/Zend/Controller/Dispatcher/Standard.php(288): Zend_Controller_Action-dispatch('viewReportsActi...') #13 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/library/Zend/Controller/Front.php(945): Zend_Controller_Dispatcher_Standard-dispatch(Object(Zend_Controller_Request_Http), Object(Zend_Controller_Response_Http)) #14 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/application/bootstrap.php(117): Zend_Controller_Front-dispatch() #15 /openx/www/admin/plugins/myApp/public/index.php(7): require('/openx...') #16 {main} This does not happen with all Smarty tags. For example, I can use {if}, {foreach}, or {assign} tags without any problems. But whenever I try to use {html_select_date}, {html_image}, or {html_table}, I get the errors. In case this matters, the programmer who is designing the plugin copied the openXWorkflow plugin and made some changes. I noticed that the openXWorkflow plugin has a file (openx/plugins_repo/openXWorkflow/www/admin/plugins/openXWorkflow/library/OX/UI/Smarty/SmartyCompilerWithViewHelper.php) with a class that overrides the default Smarty compiler, supposedly with the ability to compile shorthands for calling ZF view helpers. That file has a list of Smarty functions, but the list is incomplete. If I add the functions to the list, or simply delete the file, my template works fine, but I don't like to change library files. It may make the app hard to maintain, and I don't know if it will mess up something else. The file has the comment "There is no easy access to the list of Smarty's built-in functions so we need to list them here. HTML-specific functions are not included as we cover HTML generation separately.", so it seems like certain Smarty functions may be disabled on purpose for some reason. Will anything bad happen if I try to use them? If, for example, I want to use the {html_select_date} tag in my template, how would I go about doing that? Keep in mind that much of this stuff is new and unfamiliar to me. This is my first time ever using OpenX or Smarty, and I only have a little bit of experience with the Zend framework. Please let me know if we are using the wrong approach.

  • Audio in xCode4.x is producing console warnings

    - by David DelMonte
While the app works, I am seeing pages of console log warnings when I'm running my app on the simulator. Even Apple's "LoadPresetDemo" sample app produces the same warning messages. I don't want to reproduce them all here (about 500 lines), but here are few. I would appreciate any insight into what's going on... • PHP $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] vs. $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'], am I understanding the man pages correctly?

    - by Jeff
I did a lot of searching and also read the PHP $_SERVER man page. Do I have this right regarding which to use for my PHP scripts for simple link definitions used throughout my site? $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] is based on your web servers' config file (Apache2 in my case), and varies depending on a few directives: (1) VirtualHost, (2) ServerName, (3) UseCanonicalName, etc. $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] is based on the request from the client. Therefore, it would seem to me that the proper one to use in order to make my scripts as compatible as possible would be $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']. Is this assumption correct? Followup comments: I guess I got a little paranoid after reading this article and noting that someone said "they wouldn't trust any of the $_SERVER vars": http://markjaquith.wordpress.com/2009/09/21/php-server-vars-not-safe-in-forms-or-links/ and also: http://www.php.net/manual/en/reserved.variables.server.php (comment: Vladimir Kornea 14-Mar-2009 01:06) Apparently the discussion is mainly about $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] and why you shouldn't use it in the form action attribute without proper escaping to prevent XSS attacks. My conclusion about my original question above is that it is "safe" to use $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] for all links on a site without having to worry about XSS attacks, even when used in forms. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Can Haskell's Parsec library be used to implement a recursive descent parser with backup?

    - by Thor Thurn
I've been considering using Haskell's Parsec parsing library to parse a subset of Java as a recursive descent parser as an alternative to more traditional parser-generator solutions like Happy. Parsec seems very easy to use, and parse speed is definitely not a factor for me. I'm wondering, though, if it's possible to implement "backup" with Parsec, a technique which finds the correct production to use by trying each one in turn. For a simple example, consider the very start of the JLS Java grammar: Literal: IntegerLiteral FloatingPointLiteral I'd like a way to not have to figure out how I should order these two rules to get the parse to succeed. As it stands, a naive implementation like this: literal = do { x <- try (do { v <- integer; return (IntLiteral v)}) <|> (do { v <- float; return (FPLiteral v)}); return(Literal x) } Will not work... inputs like "15.2" will cause the integer parser to succeed first, and then the whole thing will choke on the "." symbol. In this case, of course, it's obvious that you can solve the problem by re-ordering the two productions. In the general case, though, finding things like this is going to be a nightmare, and it's very likely that I'll miss some cases. Ideally, I'd like a way to have Parsec figure out stuff like this for me. Is this possible, or am I simply trying to do too much with the library? The Parsec documentation claims that it can "parse context-sensitive, infinite look-ahead grammars", so it seems like something like I should be able to do something here.
