  JavaOne 2012 is less than a week away! If you've already made plans to be there, you're probably getting pretty excited about it already...and if not, what are you waiting for?!? Before I get to the session information, I want to point out that qualified students get free admission to JavaOne, so if you are (or know) a CS or IT (or other tech-leaning) student who might like to attend, follow the link and start making plans. Using NetBeans, JavaServer Faces 2.0, GlassFish Server technology, JavaFX 2, Oracle Database, and Evernote, rapidly create prototypical applications that can be deployed in various environments and scaled up/out with enterprise cloud solutions.  As a contributor to the JFXtras project, I also hope to attend the following "Birds Of a Feather" (BOF) session led by Gerrit Grunwald and Stephen Chin: BOF5503 - JFXtras Super Happy Dev BOF JFXtras, the open source JavaFX control and extensions project, is back for JavaFX 2.0. In this session, you will learn about the latest changes in JFXtras 2.0, including new components, controls, and features that integrate with the JavaFX 2.0 libraries. • How To Temporarily Disable The Touch Screen In X1 Carbon

  I know, why would anyone want to do that? Scott properly predicted: Don't knock a touchscreen until you've used one. Every laptop should (and will) have a touch screen in a year. Mark my words. And surely, less than a year later, the X1 Carbon (an amazing ultrabook for sure) has a touch model. And as of today, the price difference for the touch screen is a ridiculous $30 (actually $24 with a “back to school” coupon right now ;)): So why would you NOT get it? I know for some it works great. Now, let’s get real about touch *for a developer* for a minute. About 99.9% of my time in front of my laptop I’m either using Visual Studio or Chrome. I have my hands on the keyboard ALL THE TIME. I use the trackpoint ALL THE TIME. If I want to scroll, I only have to slightly move my fingers. I don’t click around much on pages: I READ them. So, in a few months of using the X1, I think I touched the screen like 10 times, and it was mostly to clear dust, which drives whatever app is in focus crazy. • How to Omit the Page Number From the First Page of a Word 2013 Document Without Using Sections

  Normally, the first page, or cover page, of a document does not have a page number or other header or footer text. You can avoid putting a page number on the first page using sections, but there is an easier way to do this. If you don’t plan to use sections in any other part of your document, you may want to avoid using them completely. We will show you how to easily take the page number off the cover page and start the page numbering at one on the second page of your document by simply using a footer (or a header) and changing one setting. Click the Page Layout tab. In the Page Setup section of the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup dialog box launcher icon in the lower, right corner of the section. On the Page Setup dialog box, click the Layout tab and select the Different first page check box in the Headers and footers section so there is a check mark in the box. Click OK. You’ll notice there is no page number on the first page of your document now. However, you might want the second page to be page one of your document, only to find it is currently page two. To change the page number on the second page to one, click the Insert tab. In the Header & Footer section of the Insert tab, click Page Number and select Format Page Numbers from the drop-down menu. On the Page Number Format dialog box, select Start at in the Page numbering section. Enter 0 in the edit box and click OK. This allows the second page of your document to be labeled as page one. You can use the drop-down menu on the Format Page Numbers button in the Header & Footer section of the Insert tab to add page numbers to your document as well. Easily insert formatted page numbers at the top or bottom of the page or in the page margins. Use the same menu to remove page numbers from your document.

• How to solve package issues/dependencies

  Background info I am trying to install Veins simulation environment by following the tutorial provided by the author. In step 1 it is required to install some packages in Linux, the tutorial suggest this commands to be executed on Terminal: sudo apt-get install build-essential gcc g++ bison flex perl tcl-dev tk-dev blt libxml2-dev zlib1g-dev default-jre doxygen graphviz libwebkitgtk-1.0-0 openmpi-bin libopenmpi-dev libpcap-dev autoconf automake libtool libxerces-c2-dev proj libgdal1-dev libfox-1.6-dev When I execute this command, I immediately get: E: Package 'proj' has no installation candidate Then I remove the proj from the command and execute it again without proj in it, next I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgdal1-dev : Depends: libgdal-dev but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. So, I remove libgdal1-dev from the command as well. And it executes file, by downloading the remaining packages. To troubleshoot the problem with proj and libdgal1-dev I go to the Synaptic Package Manager. libgdal1-dev I search for libgdal1-dev in Synaptic Package Manager and I get an entry. I Mark for Installation and then Synaptic Package Manager suggests removing libxerces-c2-dev which is actually added via the initial command. Should I trust Synaptic Package Manager with this suggestion, and proceed further? proj What should I do about proj. There are some packages in Synaptic Package Manager such as proj-bin or libproj-dev. Should I install them? • Ubuntu one, music streaming

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10, and just signed up for Ubuntu One and Ubuntu One Music. Generally file sync is working fine, but music has been a complete failure so far. Here's what I'm looking at: After 24 hours, not a single mp3 or ogg file from my laptop has sync'd to the Cloud Music folder. I have 4 gigs of data used, which is definitely not enough to include music files. That's about the right amount for my docs and photos. With music, it should be more like 13 gigs. No music shows up on the Ubuntu One Music app on my phone, nor on the web view of my Ubuntu One Cloud folder I followed all the online instructions I could find. Basically, on my laptop, right click on the Music folder and select "Ubuntu One Synchronize this folder" The Music folder now has a green check mark on it indicating its sync'd The Ubuntu One app on my laptop says "File Sync is up to date" I did provide credit card information, and on the Ubuntu One website "Music Streaming" is listed as one of my services. So what am I doing wrong? Just read this post as I'm experiencing the same problem, the answer for this post says that due to the large number of files trying to be uploaded, that it could take up to a week. However I am, as above also being told that "File sync is up to date" Can somebody confirm that this is a bug and that I just need to wait for File sync to actually be up to date? Cheers

• GRUB2 prompt instead of BURG boot screen after mistake during BURG installation

  I just installed BURG, but during the installation I made a mistake: after the package was installed, I got to some command-line based GUI for configuration, where I forgot to mark my (only) hard disk as the boot device before I hit OK. I tried to reinstall (apt-get purge burg && apt-get autoremove followed by apt-get install burg) but I wasn't able to get to the same screen again (I didn't find the GUI). When I now start my computer, I am taken to a GRUB2 prompt and no BURG (or GRUB2) boot menu is shown. Since I don't know any GRUB commands and I am helpless. How do I reinstall GRUB/BURG correctly? Update: I rebooted my computer, and got a BURG prompt (which appears to be the same thing as a GRUB prompt, but if there's a difference I wouldn't know it...). I have booted from a Live USB, but I don't know what to do next. The text above has been updated to reflect this new situation - for the original text, please see the previous versions of this post.   The newest OPN Competency Center (OPN CC) enhancements are now available. This release is focused on a new look and simplified navigation, and Resell Competency Tracking functionality. Some of the key features released include: 1. New Look and Feel with Simplified Navigation Users are now one click away from the most valuable resources. Additionally, there are now focused areas which allow users to navigate more effectively. Users can review their individual achievements, create a dedicated Training Plan to broaden their knowledge, or use the new Company Corner to view their company’s achievements. Your view as an Oracle employee has been modified and the Company Corner will provide links to allow access to Partner Workgroups and other links specific to your partner data. 2. Resell Competency Tracker This new functionality has been created to allow partners to track their progress toward becoming Resell Authorized. The Resell Competency Tracker highlights those Knowledge Zones where additional requirements must be achieved prior to Distribution Rights being granted and allows the partners to track their progress. This tracker is available to all users badged to a company ID and also to Internal Oracle employees who have existing access to Partner Workgroups. 3. Enhanced Training Manager Functionality The existing Training Manager has been enhanced to allow partners to create Workgroups that are either focused on the competency requirements for becoming Specialized or the competency requirements needed to apply for resell authorization. • PHP remote development workflow: git, symfony and hudson

  I'm looking to develop a website and all the work will be done remotely (no local dev server). The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev. Here's my initial thought: public_html (live site and git repo) testing: a mirror of the site used for visual tests (full git repo) dev/ticket# : git branches of public_html used for features and bug fixes (full git repo) Version Control with git: Initial setup: cd public_html git init git add * git commit -m ‘initial commit of the site’ cd .. git clone public_html testing mkdir dev Development: cd /dev git clone ../testing ticket# all work is done in ./dev/ticket#, then visit www.domain.com/dev/ticket# to visually test make granular commits as necessary until dev is done git push origin master:ticket# if the above fails: merge latest testing state into current dev work: git merge origin/master then try the push again mark ticket# as ready for integration integration and deployment process: cd ../../testing git merge ticket# -m "integration test for ticket# --no-ff (check for conflicts ) run hudson tests visit www.domain.com/testing for visual test if all tests pass: if this ticket marks the end of a big dev sprint: make a snapshot with git tag git push --tags origin else git push origin cd ../public_html git checkout -f (live site should have the latest dev from ticket#) else: revert the merge: git checkout master~1; git commit -m "reverting ticket#" update ticket# that testing failed with the failure details Snapshots: Each major deployment sprint should have a standard name and should be tracked. Once the bug is fixed, follow the deployment process again. My questions: Does this workflow make sense, if not, any recommendations Is my approach for reverting correct or is there a better way to say 'revert to before x commit'
