  • Web Server slows down (ASP.NET)

    below is a question I posted on stackoverflow . as suggested by Martin Clarke I also post it here. We have a really strange problem. One of the servers in the server farm becomes really slow. We see a number of timeouts in the logs and overall response time is not where it should be (and is on other servers in the farm). What is also strange is that it is not just the web app - Just logging into the server takes up to 1.5 min to show you the desktop. Once you are in, the system is as responsive as ever - unless you try to launch something, i.e. notepad - it takes another minute to launch and after launch it works fine. I checked a number of things - memory utilization is reasonable, CPU is below 15%, windows handles, event logs do not show anything. Recycling the aps.net process does not fix it - it still takes over a minute to log in. Rebooting the server helped, but now it started to slow down again. After a closer look we found out that Windows Temp directory is full of temp files - over 65k files. This is certainly something to take care of. But my question is could it be the root cause of the sluggishness, or there is still something else lurking in the shadows? Edit After more digging I am zeroing in on the issue related to the size of temp directories. It still does not answer the question why the server is still slow even there is no activity.

    I have a user logon script. I want to install printers based on hostname. Inside this folder \domain.local\SYSVOL\domain.local\Policies{DF3F608C-8D78-934F-B79F-1965F3C4409B}\User\Scripts\Logon I have cmd files for each host/workstation and the logon.cmd. Terminal Servers are honoring the environment variable %clientname% but the workstations are not.   • SSL Certificate in ISA Server 2004

    Hi All I have a ssl certificate for Exchange which has been installed on IIS for OWA but in order for this certificate to be presented to the user when they login, i.e. visit OWA, it has to be installed also on the ISA server. This is where I have become stuck. I have installed the certificate in the Personal section, but when I go to point the web listener to the ssl certificate it is never in the list. So, my question is, am I putting the certificate in the right place on the server? If so, where should it go? Cheers

    There are four hosts hostA winXP hostB Win2003 hostC Linux RHEL hostD Linux RHEL hostA cannot connect to C and D directly, but B can hostA connects to hostB using VPN hostB and hostC belong to the same subnet1 hostD is in subnet2 From hostA I need to connect to hostC and hostD by SSH. Now I can do it as follows: 1.connecting from hostA to hostB by RDP logon and there: 2.start putty client. I'd like to omit step 1 and connect from A to C and D directly On hostB I have admin acoount and configure port forwarding as follows: netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenport=N1 connectaddress=hostC_IP connectport=N2 netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenport=N3 connectaddress=hostD_IP connectport=N2 netsh interface portproxy show all: Listen on IPv4: Connect to IPv4: Address Port Address Port --------------- ---------- --------------- ---------- * N1 hostC_IP N2 * N3 hostD_IP N2 Now from hostB I can connect to either C and D: ssh localhost:N1 ssh localhost:N3 from hostA ssh hostB:N1 works too, but ssh hostB:N3 DON'T I guess the reason might be different subnets, still have no idea how to fix it. What should I do?

  • Performance of external USB disk with ESXi5

    I have a new HP DL120 G7 server with ESXi5. One VM is a Win2003 instalation and I have an external USB2.0 drive attached by USB Controller and USB Device. I copy a 4GB file from external USB to server disk. In the VM that takes up to 10 minutes. On a native Win2003 that takes aprox. 3 minutes. I have no explaination for that diference: In any case the bottleneck is the USB connection, much slower than the disks (SAS, RAID1). If the USB connection on the VM would be USB1.1 and not USB2.0 it would take much more time. (The disk performance between server partitions on the VM is correct. - see update) Could be that my native box is extremely fast and the VM is the normal case. ??? Update I try with passtrough and a first run copy the same data in aprox. 7 minutes. Still 2 times slower than the native connection. I also did another messure and the copy between partitions on the same VM takes 3 minutes.

    Is it possible to setup several additional domain controllers (ADC) at remote locations that are connected via medium bandwidth DSL (2-10 Mbit) WAN connections for a single domain (intranet.example.com)? And would it be a good idea? We have five sites and would like to have extremely high availability if any of the site were to lose their Internet connection. However each site is very small, and all are over a fairly small geographical area within the same region, so it would seem strange to have a PDC for each of the sites. If it were possible to have an ADC for each site, would the clients use the ADC or just use the PDC if it's available to them?

  • When I remove the SSL port 443 from IIS my website stops loading, how can I have it just work with only port 80 and no SSL?

    I am trying to disable SSL, I delete the 443 port so there is only an entry for port 80 and now the site won't load at all. If I re-add the 443 configuration it loads fine. What is causing it to require that? Why can't I set it up to run without SSL? Instead of just failing it should just load the page without HTTPS. If I disable port 443 and then I browse via HTTP, it STILL fails even though I am not trying to use HTTPS. What gives? When/where/how does it decide to use SSL?

    Apparently the .NET framework has a bug that prevents working set values above 2GB from accurately being determined. Between 2 and 4GB one can apply some xor-ing calculation to obtain the value, but there's no means of obtaining working set values greater than 4GB (using .Net or WMI) What method can be used - preferably from a PowerShell script - to obtain an accurate measurement of a process' working set when the working set is greater than 4GB?   • Windows GPO default mapped drives

    Is there a way, using Windows GPO, to set up a list of "default" mapped drives that can be applied to a group of users? I runs small network and would like to make sure that certain groups of users (like Sales or Support) have the same network shares mapped to the same drive letters irrespective of which PC they log onto. This would make the setup of new users easier and allow the centralised administration of the network locations shared. Any links to examples and/or step-by-step guides would be greatly appreciated.

  • SharePoint 3.0 Search Stuck Starting

    I have a single server running SharePoint 3.0 on WS2003 Sp2 not on a domain. My search service stopped working so I just went in to central admin and hit stop, then hit start. I soon found out this is not the way to do this process. I now can not get the search service to start again. I have tried everything I can think of, and nothing works it changes status to Starting but never gets to started. I have to go in with "stsadm -o spsearch -action stop" from the command prompt to stop it. I am using the Local service account for the service and the content accounts. Can anyone help me?

    If we give the anti-virus a URL it should be able to scan it and give us a report, Else, it should be able to scan the folder that we put all the links into... i.e. if we download the entire content of the webpage from the 10 Child links... and 1 parent webpage... and put them into a folder, the anti-virus solution should be able to scan all the 10 CHild and 1 Parent data.. and give us a report, Else, the anti-virus solution should be able to scan any incoming virus in any file or entity that is coming into our server and generate the report for that file, Please help me thanks in advance...

  • trouble accessing mail server from outside domain

    Our organization just moved our Website/Domain to a hosted VPS. We elected, for the time being, to keep our email (Exchange) running at our office. On our new VPS, we simply add a DNS record to redirect our mail to our on-site exchange server. This worked out well, as mail is coming and going with no problems. Recently, we ran across an issue when setting up outlook from outside of our office (Not on same network as exchange server). When configuring mail server address, it keeps prompting for credentials. Anyone got any ideas on why this is happening? Is our VPS not allowing Outlook to find our exchange server? If so, how can we bypass it?

    I have an Mailbox which multiple users have access to, it works fine for me and I can add it in Outlook as an additional mailbox to my account and list all its content. I can access my personal mailbox using IMAP, I'm testing it by just telneting in and LIST'ing it. The problem is that another user trying to access it is having problems accessing it through IMAP; and I want to test if I can access the shared mailbox with my account - how can I do that in terms of IMAP commands? What I am doing now is: telnet mail.server 01 LOGIN user pass 02 LIST "" * 03 LOGOUT Edit: If there is another way to test this, that is an equally good answer.

    Hi, I would like to set up Exchange so that when a user (e.g. [email protected]) sends an email to somedomain.com Exchange makes the email appear to have come from [email protected]. This would have to be done on a per-domain basis, and invisibly to the user. So all emails come from [email protected], except emails to somedomain.com, which appear to come from [email protected]. If I do net localgroup administrators %computername%-admins.txt, I'd like the output file to contain the net statement as well. No powershell available to me; pure CMD/COMMAND only.     In a Windows Server 2003 environment with a self hosted .Net 3.5/WCF application, how can an application report its status to a BigIP Local Traffic Manager? Example: One of my services errors. My custom WCF application hosting software (written because Windows Server 2008 is not yet available and I'm using WCF TCP bindings) detects this and wants to report itself as down until it can recover the errant service. It needs to report itself as down to the BigIP LTM so that it is no longer sent client originated requests.

    I have a serious issue with crystal reports. when run in my development environment or debugged on my local machine it works fine. but when the application is published to a windows server 2003 it has the dreaded "The report you requested requires further information" Message I have had no luck trying to get rid of this message Anybody know what I can try? I use a placeholder in the aspx page and then set the user/password and database in the codebehind I could not get it to work with a dataset and found that I had to assign odbc connection in the cr designer. and then in the code behind change the above details as required. All else works as expected. IIS runs under different permissions than VS2008 so perhaps its something to do with that, but I have tried lots of different permissions and cannot get it to run. DC
