• Making video from 3D gaphics in OpenGL

  What are some of the preferred methods or libraries for creating video from an OpenGL graphics simulation? For example, I want to create a visualization(video) of an N-Body gravity simulation by rendering non-real-time OpenGL frames. The simulation is already coded, I just don't know how to convert it to video. EDIT: I am also interested in providing the described functionality: The user can adjust parameters including the time step between captured frames and then initiate the simulation. The user waits for the simulation to complete, and then can watch the results. The user is able to increase or decrease the playback speed of the simulation whereas in slow motion, more frames are used i.e., you see higher resolution time steps, and when the speed is increased, you see lower resolution time steps at a higher rate, but the frames per second flashing on the screen is constant.

  I have been working with a nice Gent but I am getting stuck. I am just getting back in to Linux and Ubuntu was recommended. I like the look so far but the wireless isn't working I run the update and when it says complete it hangs at the end. Please let me know what to do at this point. • What's the most productive coding environment

  I was speaking with an ex-colleague the other day about the most productive way to write code and he said he found it best "to CIMP, or Code In My Pants". When I asked him exactly what he meant, he explained he found it best to work at home, coding at his own pace, dressed comfortably (in his pants), and communicating with his team through emails, IM, or the telephone. Digesting his approach (which he describes to clients as the Complete Integrated Method of Programming), I realised my coding is also more productive when working in an isolated environment, which made me wonder if the software industry has got it all wrong and should development be really done by dispersed teams of individuals, or are there advantages to geographical herding that make up for the added interruptions it brings? So has business got it wrong? Should development occur predominantly across geographically isolated individuals to increase productivity, or are there real reasons why herding developers together makes sense?

• How to get familiar with "what happens underneath of Java"?

  I did not study CS nor IT. I just became a developer, now working with Java. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java. Java Performance, Server-Side Java might be the buzz words?!! I am very poor with those more of low-level details but I do not know where to look honestly. I started looking for some keywords in Amazon, ended up reading books like "pragmatic programmer", "clean code", "code complete" which IMO they are not what I am looking for. Could you please give me some learning resources (books, articles, blog posts, online trainings) for this matter?   I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my desktop. (Pentium 4, 80 GB hard disk, 2 GB RAM, 32-bit CPU.) And I have installed Windows XP. I made a 40 GB partition for windows and 40 GB for Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu and it said "installation is complete" and asked me to restart. I restarted the PC and logged in. After 1 minute I get a message like this: The application compiz has closed unexpectedly. Then I closed it. After that it just stays in blank screen nothing shows up. What should I do?

• 2-components color model

  RGB is the natural color model for OpenGL. But a lot of other color models exist. For example, CMY(K) for printers, YUV for JPEG, the little cousins YCbCr and YCoCg, HSL & HSV from the 70's, and so on. All these models tend to share a common property : they are based on 3 components. Therefore my question is : Does it exist a 2-components color model ? I'm surprised to not find any. I was expecting something along the line of Hue+light could exist. I guess it cannot be as "complete" as a true 3-components color model, but a fine-enough approximation will be good for my usecase. The end objective is to store the 2 components into a single BC5 texture (GL_COMPRESSED_RED_GREEN_RGTC2 in OpenGL). The 3rd component requires a second fetch into a second texture, which hurts performance.

• Why is Cloudflare waiting for name servers for over 4 days?

  I've registered for Cloudflare's free plan and have completed the process of redirecting the DNS as instructed, including changing the name servers. This was done 4 days ago. The problem is that cloudflare is giving me: "websites" -- "Finishing up. Waiting for your name servers to change to * Please allow up to 24 hours to complete this process (info)" "dashboards" -- "Analytics data could not be loaded. You do not have any initialized zones" I can see via traceroute that CloudFlare is the DNS to my site. Also, somehow this has messed up with my google analytics account so I have no idea if I get visitors to my site or not. What should be done to fix this?

  I am developing a game, but as I am working on it alone, the amount of content I can create is very limited. Because of that I want my game to be modded, for this purpose I am planning to create a complete modding API which would be exposed for lua scripting. I would also create tutorials to get people started. And the "Original" game would also be a "mod"(similar to Warcraft III maps) . My question is: What can a developer do to encourage modding of its game? PS: my game is a sandbox-ish multiplayer survival(most things are procedural).

  For more precision: I'm runnning Ubuntu 12.04 I'd like an indicator which shows up to the left of the date/volume/wifi icons If possible I'd like to be able to change the translation language The indicator could use internet based translators (google translate etc.) or have a complete library come with it so translations can be obtained offline. Relating to usability: I'd like to have it work in a way where you click on the indicator icon and you can start typing either directly or once a window has opened and it instantly shows the translation you need (with your target languages pre-set or determined in options).

• programs becoming unresponsive

  I have changed from Mint 13 to Ubuntu, complete fresh install. However I regularly get programs becoming unresponsive seems to be more after when switching between screens or work places. eg before i was using firefox have 2 pop up screens(no junk ones) bank login and an ebay chat, switching between them and then firefox faded to grey and I had to force close as it become unresponsive. Ubuntu is very nice to use, but I never had these problems using mint 13. Is this common, are there any fixes coming??

• Massive crash and kernel panic after updates yesterday, what now?

  Got 12.04 on an AMD+radeon machine, everything was running fine until last night when the update manager installed new packages, and now the moment I open a browser (firefox, chromium, anything) it crashes instantly. It says warning: at build/buildd/linux-3.5.0/arch/x86/kernel/smp.c:123 native_smp_send_reschedule+0x5b/0x60() Pid: 2432, comm: chrome_dbthread tainted: G D 3.5.0-2generic #2-ubuntu I already tried uninstalling the packages from the update log, didn't solve a thing. Depending of which browser I use I get a different reaction, like a complete freeze instead of a text console crash. Ideas? I really don't know what to do.

  Please advise how to handle following scenario in web application. I have a drop-down which is populated using meta-data from table A. When form is submitted this drop down data is stored in table B. While displaying existing data, it is populated using data stored in table B. While copying existing data, it is copied using data stored in table B. I want to achieve following goals: While displaying existing data I must display data irrespective of current meta data (to explain, even if some options are removed from metadata I still display them). When I copy existing data only current data should be copied(that is if some options are removed from metadata I should not copy them). I understand that I can do this by scanning metadata every time I copy existing data, however if there are thousands of such drop down exist, it is definitely not desirable to scan complete metadata for every drop down. How can I handle such situation in web application?

• Mouse cursor is MASSIVE inside of firefox and chromium

  While installing ubuntu i accidently hit the high contrast option. I could not figure out how to diable it within the install, so i let it complete. I booted up into ubuntu 13.04 and HC was still on. I disabled it in Universal Access, and now am noticing my mouse curose is huge in web browsers. This is very much a stock install. Is there a setting to disable the HUGE mouse? I mean the thing is 4 times the size of text etc on normal pages. and its only in broswsers from what ive seen so far. EDIT Looks like its in everthing with text.. terminal, app store, folders and files... /sigh.

• Javascript Only Search Method [on hold]

  I need to put a search function on a website that is going to be on a CD-ROM with no access to the internet. It has 80 pages, and about 500 'items', so I'd prefer to not have to hard code 100's of 'if statements if possible. I've found a few programs you can buy that will index and generate results (Zoom Search, JSS Index, The German Guys') but there are odd quirks with each one. Plus I would rather code it myself to get complete control over it, and to really understand what it's doing. Basically searching for a few words would display the product image and description; clicking on that would take you the related URL. This is kind of complicated, I can't find an easy solution not dealing with hundreds of if Statements. Has anyone ever created anything like this or know a better method? I'm not really sure a better way to go about this. I've used PHP/MYSQL for search results before, but this cannot run any php.

• Funnel Visualisation not showing drop out in steps

  I have a site where users will follow this path (hopefully): mysite.com/entity mysite.com/entity/pay mysite.com/entity/pay/details mysite.com/entity/pay/confirmation mysite.com/entity/pay/payment mysite.com/entity/paymentsuccessful?lotsofuniquestuff The entity section could be any one of a multitude of entries, but once the user is on a journey it will stay consistent. I have a goal set up for this as a regular expression, with the match being .*PaymentSuccessful.*. This detects goal successes perfectly (as checked with data stored by the site directly). I have set the following steps within the goal: /[a-zA-Z0-9]+/pay /[a-zA-Z0-9]+/pay/details /[a-zA-Z0-9]+/pay/confirmation /[a-zA-Z0-9]+/pay/payment My funnel detects entry into the funnel (e.g. 47 users) of which say 10 complete the funnel. However, all drop offs are after the first step, even though the exist page is listed as the second step! My data also suggests users are getting further in the funnel before failing to reach the goal. What have I done wrong?

• How to move a rectangle properly?

  I recently started to learn OpenGL. Right now I finished the first chapter of the "OpenGL SuperBible". There were two examples. The first had the complete code and showed how to draw a simple triangle. The second example is supposed to show how to move a rectangle using SpecialKeys. The only code provided for this example was the SpecialKeys method. I still tried to implement it but I had two problems. In the previous example I declared and instaciated vVerts in the SetupRC() method. Now as it is also used in the SpecialKeys() method, I moved the declaration and instantiation to the top of the code. Is this proper c++ practice? I copied the part where vertex positions are recalculated from the book, but I had to pick the vertices for the rectangle on my own. So now every time I press a key for the first time the rectangle's upper left vertex is moved to (-0,5:-0.5). This ok because of GLfloat blockX = vVerts[0]; //Upper left X GLfloat blockY = vVerts[7]; // Upper left Y But I also think that this is the reason why my rectangle is shifted in the beginning. After the first time a key was pressed everything works just fine. Here is my complete code I hope you can help me on those two points. • 12.10 will not shut down

  I recently installed 12.04 on an hp spectre xt ultrabook. I installed 12.04 from a USB. When the install was complete, and the computer restarted, I got a blank screen. After some searching, I found that I had to choose "acpi=off" during the installation, which now shows up in the grub screen. Once I was on 12.04, I upgraded to 12.10. The issue now is that when I hit shutdown, the computer hangs on a purple shutdown screen. Usually, at this point, I press the power button on the machine to completely power off the machine. I am new to ubuntu, and would appreciate the help. Thanks.
