• Passing Binary Data to a Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2008

  I'm trying to figure out a way to store files in a database. I know it's recommended to store files on the file system rather than the database, but the job I'm working on would highly prefer using the database to store these images (files). There are also some constraints. I'm not an admin user, and I have to make stored procedures to execute all the commands. This hasn't been of much difficulty so far, but I cannot for the life of me establish a way to store a file (image) in the database. When I try to use the BULK command, I get an error saying "You do not have permission to use the bulk load statement." The bulk utility seemed like the easy way to upload files to the database, but without permissions I have to figure a work-a-round. I decided to use an HTML form with a file upload input type and handle it with PHP. The PHP calls the stored procedure and passes in the contents of the file. The problem is that now it's saying that the max length of a parameter can only be 128 characters. Now I'm completely stuck. I don't have permissions to use the bulk command and it appears that the max length of a parameter that I can pass to the SP is 128 characters. I expected to run into problems because binary characters and ascii characters don't mix well together, but I'm at a dead end... Thanks

• SVN Serve, Missing a Directory

  I'm sure this is an asinine question, and I blame myself for not fully understanding how the SVNSERVE process works. I have an SVN repo, but it needs to be moved to a server within a clients cloud. I did this a while back and ran into the issue of the SVNSERVE.exe process not getting set to the right directory. I have the SVNSERVE.exe process running as a windows service and pointing to the right directory. There are two other repos there that are serving out fine in the same directory. I copied out the new directory just like I did with the others, but I'm getting the error "No repository found". I thought that SVNSERVE just looked at that directory and served out the repositories that were there, but I have had a hard time finding more information about that. I thought it was a Windows permission problem, but I set the whole folder to be full control to EVERYONE, so that's not it. I feel horrible I didn't fully understand this problem the first time I fought it, but it's late on a Sunday night and clients are yelling. Anyone know what I'm missing? Thanks. EDIT: It's specific to the repository. I tested the same process with some of the other repos we have on our server and when I copied them up, they worked just as expected. This bug is breaking me and I wish I could provide more details, but that's all I know. I'm going to try to do an SVN Dump instead of an XCopy and see how that goes. I'll let you know.

• wcf trying to set up tracing to debug, not writing to log file

  here's my web.config, running a WCF service in an application on IIS7, but nothing is being written to the specified file. permission on the file has been granted for everyone. </listeners> I can add a service reference just fine. I then try to call the service from a windows app and, after a few minutes, get an error on the machine running the windows app "Client is unable to finish the security negotiation within the configured timeout (00:00:00). The current negotiation leg is 1 (00:00:00)." but absolutely nothing is written to the trace log file specified in config. • why it is not possible to modify file in a directory, where i have read/write group rights

  I am currently messing around on my linux system and now i have the following situation. The directory /srv/http has the following permissions set: drwxrwxr-x 2 root httpdev 80 Jun 13 11:48 ./ drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 152 Mar 26 13:56 ../ -rwxrwxr-x 1 root httpdev 8 Jun 13 11:48 index.html* I have created the group httpdev before with the command: groupadd httpdev and added my user sighter with: gpasswd -a sighter httpdev Then i have set the permissions as above using the chown and chmod commands. But now i am not allowed to modify the index.html file or create a new file, as user sighter ,with touch like that: <sighter [bassment] ~http> touch hallo.php touch: cannot touch `hallo.php': Permission denied What do I understand wrong. I was expecting that i can do what i want there then the group has all the rights. • Cannot write to SD card -- canWrite is returning false

I am not running this off of an emulator, I have my android Eris plugged into my computer via USB and running the app off of my phone via Eclipse. Is there a way of giving my app permission so this doesn't happen? Also, this code seems to be create the file default.txt but what if it already exists, will it ignore the creation and just open it to write or do I have to catch something like FileAlreadyExists(if such an exception exists) which then just opens it and writes? • php fopen function dies, though I have file permissions set to read and write

  I'm following a tutorial on php, and am having difficulty getting this to work. I set the appropriate directory permissions to read and write, but every time I run this, I get the die string. The code is: $ourFileName = "testFile.txt"; $ourFileHandle = fopen($ourFileName, 'w') or die("can't open file"); fclose($ourFileHandle); As far as my basic understanding goes, if "testFile.txt" does not exist, fopen should create that file (I have basic knowledge of Python, and remember this same principle in that language). But it...it doesn't. Even if I create the aforementioned file, and put it up, that line of code still returns a die string. My hosting account does not give me permission to execute. Is this a problem? My server runs on Windows. I am using Dreamweaver CS5, on OSX 10.5.8. I've done some searching on this, and see other people having similar issues - but none of them keyed to exactly my range of problems. Being that I'm a beginner, I feel that it might be something I'm overlooking. Thanks!!

• ASP.NET MVC Authorize by Subdomain

  I have what seems like a common issue with SaaS applications, but have not seen this question on here anywhere. I am using ASP.NET MVC with Forms Authentication. I have implemented a custom membership provider to handle logic, but have one issue (perhaps the issue is in my mental picture of the system). As with many SaaS apps, customers create accounts and use the app in a way that looks like they are the only ones present (they only see their items, users, etc.). In reality, there are generic controllers and views presenting data depending on the customer represented in the URL. When calling something like the MembershipProvider.ValidateUser, I have access to the user's customer affiliation in the User object - what I don't have is the context of the request to compare whether it is a data request for the same customer as the user. As an example, One company called ABC goes to abc.mysite.com Another company called XYZ goes to xyz.mysite.com When an ABC user calls http://abc.mysite.com/product/edit/12 I have an [Authorize] attribute on the Edit method in the ProductController to make sure he is signed in and has sufficient permission to do so. If that same ABC user tried to access http://xyz.mysite.com/product/edit/12 I would not want to validate him in the context of that call. In the ValidateUser of the MembershipProvider, I have the information about the user, but not about the request. I can tell that the user is from ABC, but I cannot tell that the request is for XYZ at that point in the code. How should I resolve this?

• Permissions on Mac OSX

  I think that this is a permissions issue but I am not sure and I am not sure how to repair the problem. I have a new MacBook. I have 2 external drives that were previously used on another MacBook. I have a lot of folders and XCode projects on the external drives. When I try to work on the projects, there is a message similar to this: "This file is not writable. You may not be able to save your changes, but you will be able to Save a Copy somewhere else. Do you want to edit this file anyway?" If I make changes and try to close the project I get this error: "The project and user files project.pbxproj and macbook.pbxuser for project “thirdtry.xcodeproj” are not writeable and cannot be saved. Your changes will be lost if you close the project. You may need to SCM edit these files to gain writability." I have tried just to rename the folder but that permission is not allowed either unless I individually change permissions for every file in an XCode project. As you can imagine, this could be time consuming for tons of files and projects. I can copy the project into internal memory and can run it then after renaming the folder that contains all of the files. This defeats the purpose of having all of the projects on an external drive. Also, in XCode, there is no "Build and Run" there is only "Build and Debug" now. I don't know if this is related or not. Suggestions for how to repair all permissions to all files and folders on my external drives? What about the "Build and Debug" and no "Build and Run" choice? Thanks, Linda

• Getting Hprof dump for other processes from application code

  Hi, In my application , i have an option to capture the hprof dump. I used android.os.Debug.dumpHprofData (String fileName) Initially i though the hprof data generated by the method above is for the entire device , which is not so . The hprof data generated is only for my process. Now i am trying to generate hprof data for other process as well. I need to get the Hprof dump for all the running processes from application code. from adb shell i tried "kill -10 " , This command will generate the hprof file for the corresponding process in the data/misc folder. Now the problem is this command is working perfectly from the adb shell prompt , but i am not able to embed the command to mycode. My code is like Runtime.getRuntime().exec("chmod 777 /data/misc") Runtime.getRunTime().exec("kill -10 ") No exceptions are thrown , but somehow it is not working. The same code above is capturing Hprof dump for my process, when i give my process ID. I tried with "android.os.Process.sendSignal (int pid, android.os.Process.SIGNAL_USR1) ;" also.Getting the same problem.It is capturing Hprof dump for my process. For other processes it is not working. Do we need to have any special permission to kill other process from our process ? Or is it a built issue ? can you please suggest some possible way to get Hprof dump for other processes from application code? Thanks

• Opening port 80 with Java application on Ubuntu

  What I need to do is running a Java application which is a RESTful service server side writtern by Restlet. And this service will be called by another app running on Google App Engine. Because of the restriction of GAE, every http call is limited to port 80 and 443 (http and https) with HttpUrlConnection class. As a result, I have to deploy my server side application on port 80 or 443. However, because the app is running on Ubuntu, and those ports under 1024 cannot be accessed by non-root user, then a Access Denied exception will be thrown when I run my app. The solutions that have come into my mind includs: Changing the security policy of JRE, which is the files resides in /lib/security/java.policy, to grantjava.net.SocketPermission "*.80" "listen, connect, accept, resolve" permission?However, neither using command line to include this file or overrides the content in JRE's java.policy file, the same exception keeps coming out. try to login as a root user, however because my unfamiliarity with Unix, I don't know how to do it. another solution I haven't try is to map all calls to 80 to a higher port like 1234, then I can deploy my app on 1234 without problem, and GAE call send request to port 80. But how to connect the missing gap is still a problem. Currently I am using a "hacking" method, which is to package the application into a jar file, and sudo running the jar file with root privilege. It works now, but definitely not appropriate in the real deployment environment. So if anyone have any idea about the solution, thanks very much!

• Google Script / Spreadsheet -- Shared permissions with Installed Trigger onEdit

  Using an installed trigger inside spreadsheet to call onUpdateBilling(). Purpose of this script is on edit, based on content of column "billed" (i.e. "d") will highlight the entire column the predetermined color. Page running script is shared with collaborators and they have been given edit access. My expectation at this point is the script should be run with owner permissions. My shared users are unable to run the script with the given error "You don't have permission for this action." Reached my limited knowledge and googlefu for this workaround. Any help to allow operation to my collaborators is appreciated. • Git-Based Source Control in the Enterprise: Suggested Tools and Practices?

  I use git for personal projects and think it's great. It's fast, flexible, powerful, and works great for remote development. But now it's mandated at work and, frankly, we're having problems. Out of the box, git doesn't seem to work well for centralized development in a large (20+ developer) organization with developers of varying abilities and levels of git sophistication - especially compared with other source-control systems like Perforce or Subversion, which are aimed at that kind of environment. (Yes, I know, Linus never intended it for that.) But - for political reasons - we're stuck with git, even if it sucks for what we're trying to do with it. Here are some of the things we're seeing: The GUI tools aren't mature Using the command line tools, it's far to easy to screw up a merge and obliterate someone else's changes It doesn't offer per-user repository permissions beyond global read-only or read-write privileges If you have a permission to ANY part of a repository, you can do that same thing to EVERY part of the repository, so you can't do something like make a small-group tracking branch on the central server that other people can't mess with. Workflows other than "anything goes" or "benevolent dictator" are hard to encourage, let alone enforce It's not clear whether it's better to use a single big repository (which lets everybody mess with everything) or lots of per-component repositories (which make for headaches trying to synchronize versions). With multiple repositories, it's also not clear how to replicate all the sources someone else has by pulling from the central repository, or to do something like get everything as of 4:30 yesterday afternoon. However, I've heard that people are using git successfully in large development organizations. If you're in that situation - or if you generally have tools, tips and tricks for making it easier and more productive to use git in a large organization where some folks are not command line fans - I'd love to hear what you have to suggest. BTW, I've asked a version of this question already on LinkedIn, and got no real answers but lots of "gosh, I'd love to know that too!"

• mvn deploy to AWS (ssh via distributionManagement)

  I am working on deploying the WAR file to AWS using Maven. I am planning to use 'mvn deploy' for the same which would ssh the war file to AWS. I am following http://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-deploy-plugin/examples/deploy-ssh-external.html. I am able to ssh in the AWS server by the following. ssh -i ~/pemfile/pemfile-key.pem aws-user@<ec2 instance>.compute-1.amazonaws.com But when I run mvn clean deploy, I receive this..   In my website project. I need to rename or remove some folder by code. Sometimes I can do all of that, but sometimes I cannot with error: Access to the path is denied Try to find to solution on Google. May be, there are two reason: The permisstion of that Folder Some subFolder or some file in that Folder that's being held open. Try to check: Right click on Folder- Properties-- Security: if this is the right way to check the permission, the Folder allowes every action (read, write....) There are no file, no subfolder of that Folder is opened. Why? I still dont understant why sometimes I can rename folder but sometimes I cannot. Help!! I need your opinions!!! • Determine the folder of a SAS source file

  When I open a SAS file in enterprise guide and run it, it is executed on the server. The source file itself is located either on the production site or the development site. In both cases, it is executed the same server however. I want to be able to tell my script to store results in a relative folder. But if I write something like libname lib_out xport "..\tmp\foobar.xpt"; I get an error, because the working folder of the SAS Enterprise Guide process is not the location of my source file, but a folder on the server. And the folder ..\tmp does not exist there. Even if it would, the server process does not have write permission in that folder. I would like to determine from which folder the .sas file was loaded and set the working folder accordingly. In one case it's S:\Development\myproject\sas\foobar.sas and in the other case it's S:\Production\myproject\sas\foobar.sas It this possible at all? Or how would you do this?

• Should I use IDisposable for purely managed resources?

  Here is the scenario: I have an object called a Transaction that needs to make sure that only one entity has permission to edit it at any given time. In order to facilitate a long-lived lock, I have the class generating a token object that can be used to make the edits. You would use it like this: var transaction = new Transaction(); using (var tlock = transaction.Lock()) { transaction.Update(data, tlock); } Now, I want the TransactionLock class to implement IDisposable so that its usage can be clear. But, I don't have any unmanaged resources to dispose. however, the TransctionLock object itself is a sort of "unmanaged resource" in the sense that the CLR doesn't know how to properly finalize it. All of this would be fine and dandy, I would just use IDisposable and be done with it. However, my issue comes when I try to do this in the finalizer: ~TransactionLock() { this.Dispose(false); } I want the finalizer to release the transaction from the lock, if possible. How, in the finalizer, do I detect if the parent transaction (this.transaction) has already been finalized? Is there a better pattern I should be using? • Accessing a share point site using the object model.

  Hi I am trying to access a share point site using the SP object model from a console application. I am trying to do something like this.. SPSite site = new SPSite(sitePath) //Operations go here This works fine when the share point site and the console app are on the same machine. However when the console app and the site are on different machines, I get an error "The Web application at "http://server/url" could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application" Here are the things that I have already done: 1) I have tried accessing the site via both IP address as well as machine name, assuming that it could be a DNS resolution issue. 2) Initially I impersonated using a farm admin account, still i could not access. Then I added myself as the farm admin, still no joy. 4) The site is accessible via IE. So it is not a permission issue I guess. 5) I have tried almost all the solutions suggested by various links obtained by googling the error message. I am trying this on share point 2010. A similar issue occurs on 2007 also. Sometimes its kind of frustrating to do SharePoint development , since I get the feeling of stumbling from one error to the next, with no clue as to what could be wrong and the error messages not being helpful in the least :(

Right now when I click the "Finish" button, facebook permissions dialogue is initiated but before I am prompted for the actual permission submission window, the browser freezes. Just like I have pressed Esc during the process. In fact status bar of the browser says "Stopped". Any help is highly appreciated.

  Hey all, I've got a little problem on a goDaddy server. I have a php script (ajaxCRUD) in which there's an upload field, and I can't get it to accept file over the default limit. I always get this (when I output the $_FILE[$fieldname]) : array(5) { ["name"]=> string(13) "children2.mp3" ["type"]=> string(0) "" ["tmp_name"]=> string(0) "" ["error"]=> int(1) ["size"]=> int(0) } Things I tried : Added a parameter in the HTML form ([...]name="MAX_FILE_SIZE" value="10000000"[...]) Changed the php5.ini at the root of the server, to no avail. After a phpinfo(), no differences are seen, even though the phpinfo clearly indicate it is reading the same php5.ini : [...]/html/php5.ini. Here is what I added in this file : upload_tmp_dir = ./temp upload_max_filesize = 20M Anything under 2M (the default value) is okay, so there's no problem with the upload path or file permission. I don't have any more idea for the moment, do any of you has one?

• what makes a Tomcat5.5 cannot be "aware" of new Java Web Applications?

  This is for uni homework, but I reckon it is more a generic problem to the Tomcat Server(version 5.5.27) on my uni. The problem is, I first did a skeleton Java Web Application (Just a simple Servlet and a welcome-file, nothing complicated, no lib included) using NetBeans 6.8 with the bundled Tomcat 6.0.20 (localhost:8084/WSD) Then, to test and prove it is "portable" and "auto-deploy-able", I cleaned and built a WSD.war file and dropped it onto my Xampp Tomcat (localhost:8080/WSD). The war extracted everything accordingly and I can see identical output from this Tomcat. So far, so good. However, after I tried to drop to war onto uni server, funny thing happens: uni server Even though I've changed the war permission to 755, it is simply not "responding". I then copied the extracted files to uni server, the MainServlet cannot be recognized from within its Context Path "/WSD", basically nothing works, expect the static index.jsp. I tried several times to stop and restart uni Tomcat, it doesn't help? I wonder what makes this happen? Is there anything I did wrong with my approach? To be frank I paid no attention to a server not under my control, and I am unfortunately not a real active day-to-day Java Programmer now. I understand the fundamentals of MVC, Servelets, JSPs, JavaBeans, but I really feel frustrated by this, as I cannot see why... Or, should I ask, a Java Web Application, after cleaned and built by NetBeans6.8, is self-contained and self-configured so ready to be deployed to any Java Web Container? I know, I can certainly program everything in plain old JSP, but this is soooo... unacceptable to myself... Update : I am now wondering if there is any free Tomcat Hosting so that I would like to see if my war file and/or my web app can go with them without any configuration at all?
