  Disclaimer: I'm trying to learn proper OO programming/design, so I'm pretty new to this stuff. I guess this is a general design patterns question, but I'll base my example on a game engine or something that renders objects to the display. Consider the following: How can this sort of separation between physical objects (e.g., cubes, spheres, etc.) and the rendering mechanism be achieved in an extensible manner? This design is not set in stone, and perhaps I've got something wrong from the start. I'm just curious as to how a problem like this is solved in real world code.

• C# String builder, displaying data nicely spaced out.

  Hello, I am wondering how exactly can i order my date nicely in a stringbuilder? Meaning something equal to ("{0,2}", ....) to space the data nicely out. I do not want to use consolewrites of any kind, so the class can be re-used in a form, console code etc... Currently i am using " " for the spacing, but in overall it does not give a proper display. • Error handling with Python + Pylons

  What is the proper way to handle errors with Python + Pylons? Say a user sets a password via a form that, when passed to a model class via the controller, throws an error because it's too short. How should that error be handled so that an error message gets displayed on the web page rather than the entire script terminating to an error page? Should there be any error handling in the controller itself? I hope I am explaining myself clearly. Thank you.

• What is an appropriate way to programmatically exit an application?

  I am evaluating user inputs as commands for my application. If the user presses Q, or q, and then hits enter, the application quits and execution terminates. Is there a proper context, or best practices on how to do that? I do not have any resources to release, or anything like that. Should I just use System.exit(0);? Is there a recommended way to do that? • set the width of a UIText view based on the content size property

  TextView.contentSize.width does not work to set the UITextView's .frame.size.width. [TextView setFrame:CGRectMake(TextView.frame.origin.x, TextView.frame.origin.y, TextView.contentSize.width, TextView.contentSize.height)]; Setting the UITextView's frame height to the contentSize.height property works to make the view's frame scale to the proper size for the current vertical size of the content. For some reason, the width of the view's frame does not respond in the same way. It just remains the same size regardless of the amount of text input. When I log the contentsize of the UITextView dynamically, as I am typing in text to the view, the height property chnges, while the width does not. Makes me wonder what the width property is doing, what's it for.

• Core Data: Detecting the type and casting it

  I have set up a Core Data model that includes an entity, Item with a 1-M relationship with the abstract entity Place, so that an item has many places. There are several entities with the parent set to Place. I want to set up several UI elements depending on the descendent place types. I have a loop that looks something like this: for (Place *place in item.places) { } ... but I'm not sure how to detect what type the place is, and how to cast it to the proper type so that I can access its properties. • How to use a self-signed SSL certificate when developing with Trigger.io?

  Our backend is in rails, and for several reasons the development environment has to be run with rails using a self-signed SSL certificate. This works fine on the desktop after manually trusting the certificate. Using Trigger.io, we're developing a mobile application targeting iOS from the same backend. It would be ideal for us to be able to run the rails server with SSL (so we can compare the browser output) and still have the iOS simulator connect properly without complaining about invalid certs. Production is using a proper ssl-cert, but what's the best way to set up the simulator?

• When is BIG, big enough for a database?

  I'm developing a Java application that has performance at its core. I have a list of some 40,000 "final" objects, i.e., I have an initialization input data of 40,000 vectors. This data is unchanged throughout the program's run. I am always preforming lookups against a single ID property to retrieve the proper vectors. Currently I am using a HashMap over a sub-sample of a 1,000 vectors, but I'm not sure it will scale to production. When is BIG, actually big enough for a use of DB? One more thing, an SQLite DB is a viable option as no concurrency is involved, so I guess the "threshold" for db use, is perhaps lower.

  Hello! I'm doing some Delphi (2010) work this summer, and I've stumbled upon this problem: My project consists of reusable backend library and a bunch of GUIs that tap into its interface. In this circumstances I've decided to make the backend and GUIs separate projects within single project group (I hope my train of thought is correct). The problem is, how can I include units from the backend in a GUI project? I've tried to modify Project Options > Directories and Conditionals but compiler still complains about being unable to find proper .dcu's. Any ideas? Your help will be appreciated.

  Hi, We're writing a web-based tool to configure our services provided by multiple servers. This includes interfaces configuration, dhcp configs etc. etc. Having configs in database and views that generate proper output, how to send it/make it available for servers? I'm thinking about sending it through scp and invoking reload command to services through ssh. I'm also thinking about using Func to do all the job, as this is Python tool and will seemingly integrate with python-based (django) config tool. Any other proposals?

• How to limit memory of a OS X program? ulimit -v neither -m are working

  My programs run out of memory like half of the time I run them. Under Linux I can set a hard limit to the available memory using ulimit -v mem-in-kbytes. Actually, I use ulimit -S -v mem-in-kbytes, so I get a proper memory allocation problem in the program and I can abort. But... ulimit is not working in OSX 10.6. I've tried with -s and -m options, and they are not working. In 2008 there was some discussion about the same issue in MacRumors, but nobody proposed a good alternative. The should be a way a program can learn it's spending too much memory, or setting a limit through the OS.

• Want to 'sandbox' user form submitted HTML

  Hi all. I have a user form with a textarea that allows users to submit html formatted data. The html itself is limited by PHP strip_tags, but of course that does no completion checking etc. My basic problem is that should a user leave a tag unclosed, such as the tag, then all the content following that, including page content that follows that is 'outside' the user content display area, could now be malformed. Checking for proper tag completion is one solution I will look at, but ideally I'd like to firewall the user htmlified content away from the rest of the site somehow. Any suggestions on the best approach? Thanks!

  I am using a simple join to pull data from two databases. This is the join in the model function com_control(){ $this->db->select('*'); $this->db->from('comments'); $this->db->join('posts', 'comments.entry_id = posts.id'); $query = $this->db->get(); return $query->result; } My desired method of display is going to be in a table so I am starting out to use like this foreach($comm_control as $row){ $this->table->add_row( $row->entry_id, $row->comments.id, $row->comment, $row->title ); }//end of foreach My problem is the display of data from comments.id. What is the proper format to add the comment.id into the table rows? I need the ID from both tables for display, edit and delete further on in the table. The only display I get at this time for "comment.id" is the word id. The Any help would be appreciated.

• PHP __call vs method_exists

  The Project I'm working on contains something like a wrapper for call_user_func(_array) which does some checks before execution. One of those checks is method_exists (In Case the supplied first argument is an instance of a class and the second is a method name) The other is_callable. The function will throw an exception if one of those checks fails. My Code contains an array with function names (setFoo, setBar, etc.) and the php magic function for overloading (__call) which handles setting, replacing and deletion of certain variables (better certain array elements). The Problem: method_exists will return false if the function is not defined. Do I have any chance to get a true if the __call function does proper handling of the request?

  I have the following XML: Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 While this XSL does what is expected (output the attr of the first picture): It seems to be not possible to do the same inside the variable declaration using xsl:copy-of: Curious: If I just select "$FirstPicture" instead of "$FirstPicture/@attr" in the second example, it outputs the text node of Picture 1 as expected... Before you all suggest me to rewrite the code: This is just a simplified test, my real aim is to use a named template to select a node into the variable FirstPicture and reuse it for further selections. I hope someone could help me to understand the behavior or could suggest me a proper way to select a node with code which could be easily reused (the decission which node is the first one is complex in my real application).   Hello all. My issue is trying to determine a number of objects created, the objects being serialized from an XML document. The XML document should be set up for simplicity, so any developer can add an additional object and need no further modification to the code. However each of these objects need to be handled/updated seperately, and specifically, some of the objects are of different sub-classes, which need to be handled differently. Here is some pseudocode for what I am going for class A { public B myClassB; public void Update() { // for every object of whatever type in myClassB // update logic } } XML: <\data <\object1 etc... So what would be my simplest course of action, allowing other to add objects via the XML, but still ensuring the proper logic happenes for each?

• Can I set JFrame's normal size while it is maximized?

  I'd like to set the normal size of a visible JFrame while it is in Frame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH state (by normal size i mean the size of frame when it is in Frame.NORMAL state) . The reason I want to do this is so that when the user un-maximizes the frame, it will have the proper size I want it to be. But if I do so, the window will switch to normal state. If I set the size first, then switch to MAXIMIZED_BOTH state, then I will see a disturbing blink or resize (which I don't want to). I've also tried setting the size first, then changing state to MAXIMIZED_BOTH, and then making it visible, but the state change is deferred if the window is not visible (and will only be executed once it is made visible, also resulting in a visual resize). So what can I do if I want my frame to have a predefined normal size, but I want it to appear maximized?

• How to make dll referenced by ActiveX component accessible?

  I have an ActiveX component developed in C#. I'm referencing a dll which comes with other native dlls and it is loading them on the fly expecting them to be in the same folder (probably using Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location but not sure, I don't have control over them). There is also one ini file which is also expected to be in the same folder. When I run the application as Windows form app, everything is fine, of course. But the trouble comes when I run it within Internet Explorer as the base directory is at the location of iexplore.exe. Obviously neither the dlls or the ini file can be found and many temporary working files outputted by the dlls are located in Internet Explorer folder. The workaround is to copy all ddls and ini file into the ie folder but that is not something I'd be happy about. What is the proper solution to this? Can I somehow set the base path for the ActiveX component?
