  • How can I get run Ubuntu Desktop on my Galaxy Nexus?

    On the Ubuntu for phones site it advertises the desktop view feature: "The phone becomes a full PC and thin client when docked.". And there's the demo by Canonical of something similar running under Ubuntu for Android. I realize they're different systems, but the end effect is in both is to have a full Ubuntu system running on the phone. I've installed Ubuntu Touch Preview on my Galaxy Nexus (toro), and it's working as expected (no cellular signal, but wifi works, etc). But when I plug in a monitor via HDMI it just mirrors the phone's touch display. There's also currently no bluetooth support for attaching keyboard and mouse. Keyboard only kind of works via USB, and mouse not at all. I've also tried running Ubuntu under Android via VNC, but the lack of responsiveness of VNC makes it impractical for daily use. I'd consider that route again if there is some way to make the UI more responsive. So the question is, how can set up my phone to run Ubuntu Desktop in a way that's useable as a laptop replacement? Is there a way to enable Desktop View on Ubuntu Touch? Or can I run Ubuntu for Android as in the previously referenced demo? Plugging into a monitor would be OK, but I'd love to be able to use the desktop interface with mouse and keyboard through the phone's screen as well. Touch input and an onscreen keyboard would be a plus but is definitely not necessary.

  • Can I set my Optimus Nvidia card to run Unity3D with bumblebee?

    I'd like to know whether I can run compiz on my Nvidia card to speed things up. It's a Dell XPS15 laptop but I'm mostly using it as a desktop, so battery life is not important. Apparently my Intel integrated card is able to run unity 3D, but my Nvidia GT 420M is not.   • how can I get 32-bit program to run on 64-bit Ubuntu?

    Sorry to be asking this, but I have read quite a few posts and articles a lot of places wrt the issue I am having, to no avail. I am trying to get a Second Life Viewer (Firestorm) to run, and just keep getting the '64-bit error message' it throws. I have installed every 32-lib I can find, still doesn't work. I think I am surely missing some setting somewhere, or running Firestorm from the wrong place, or something, but I have no idea what. FWIW, Firestorm loads but doesn't behave right in the 32-bit version, either. I have actually tried several linux distros, 32 and 64-bit. Mint 32-bit runs it straight off, and Mint 64-bit throws the '64-bit error'. openSUSE, any version, won't run it at all. Oh, and all the other SL viewers I have tried behave the same way. I am beginning to wonder if my set-up just doesn't like linux. Here is my system info: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (2661 MHz) Memory: 4026 MB OS Version: Linux 3.2.0-29-generic-pae #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:25:43 UTC 2012 i686 Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.   • How to show printer properties/preferences dialog and save changes?

    I can't figure out how to properly show the printer preference dialog of a given printer so that the user can change the printer settings. Most of the examples that I can find online manage to show the dialog but any changes the user might make are lost which makes it useless. Example: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/system/PrinterPropertiesWindow.aspx (I tried to change the code as suggested by BartJoy but that didn't fix it) Does anyone know how to do this properly?

  • Caveat utilitor - Can I run two versions of Microsoft Project side-by-side?

    A number of out customers have asked if there are any problems in installing and running multiple versions of Microsoft Project on a single client. Although this is a case of Caveat utilitor (Let the user beware), as long as the user understands and accepts the issues that can occur then they can do this. Although Microsoft provide the ability to leave old versions of Office products (except Outlook) on your client when you are installing a new version of the product they certainly do not endorse doing so. Figure: For Project you can choose to keep the old stuff   That being the case I would have preferred that they put a “(NOT RECOMMENDED)” after the options to impart that knowledge to the rest of us, but they did not. The default and recommended behaviour is for the newer version installer to remove the older versions. Of course this does not apply in the revers. There are no forward compatibility packs for Office. There are a number of negative behaviours (or bugs) that can occur in this configuration: There is only one MS Project In Windows a file extension can only be associated with a single program.  In this case, MPP files can be associated with only one version of winproj.exe.  The executables are in different folders so if a user double-clicks a Project file on the desktop, file explorer, or Outlook email, Windows will launch the winproj.exe associated with MPP and then load the MPP file.  There are problems associated with this situation and in some cases workarounds. The user double-clicks on a Project 2010 file, Project 2007 launches but is unable to open the file because it is a newer version.  The workaround is for the user to launch Project 2010 from the Start menu then open the file.  If the file is attached to an email they will need to first drag the file to the desktop. All your linked MS Project files need to be of the same version There are a number of problems that occur when people use on Microsoft’s Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technology.  The three common uses of OLE are: for inserted projects where a Master project contains sub-projects and each sub-project resides in its own MPP file shared resource pools where multiple MPP files share a common resource pool kept in a single MPP file cross-project links where a task or milestone in one MPP file has a  predecessor/successor relationship with a task or milestone in a different MPP file What I’ve seen happen before is that if you are running in a version of Project that is not associated with the MPP extension and then try and activate an OLE link then Project tries to launch the other version of Project.  Things start getting very confused since different MPP files are being controlled by different versions of Project running at the same time.  I haven’t tried this in awhile so I can’t give you exact symptoms but I suspect that if Project 2010 is involved the symptoms will be different then in a Project 2003/2007 scenario.  I’ve noticed that Project 2010 gives different error messages for the exact same problem when it occurs in Project 2003 or 2007.  -Anonymous The recommendation would be either not to use this feature if you have to have multiple versions of Project installed or to use only a single version of Project. You may get unexpected negative behaviours if you are using shared resource pools or resource pools even when you are not running multiple versions as I have found that they can get broken very easily. If you need these thing then it is probably best to use Project Server as it was created to solve many of these specific issues. Note: I would not even allow multiple people to access a network copy of a Project file because of the way Windows locks files in write mode. This can cause write-locks that get so bad a server restart is required I’ve seen user’s files get write-locked to the point where the only resolution is to reboot the server. Changing the default version to run for an extension So what if you want to change the default association from Project 2007 to Project 2010?   Figure: “Control Panel | Folder Options | Change the file associated with a file extension” Windows normally only lists the last version installed for a particular extension. You can select a specific version by selecting the program you want to change and clicking “Change program… | Browse…” and then selecting the .exe you want to use on the file system. Figure: You will need to select the exact version of “winproj.exe” that you want to run Conclusion Although it is possible to run multiple versions of Project on one system in the main it does not really make sense.

  • Run a command as cron would but from the command line.

    I have a script that I'm trying to run from cron. When I run it from bash, it work just fine. However when I let cron do it's thing, I get a: myscript.sh: line 122: syntax error: unexpected end of file What I want is a way to run a command as if it was a cron job, but do it in my shell. As a side note: does anyone know what would be differnt under cron? (the script already has a #!/bin/sh line) To answer my own question: I added this to my crontab: * * * * * bcs for ((i=1; i <= 55; i++)) ; do find ~/.crontemp/ -name '*.run' -exec "{}" ";" ; sleep 1; done` and created this script: #!/bin/sh tmp=$(mktemp ~/.crontemp/cron.XXXXX) mknod $tmp.pipe p mv $tmp $tmp.pre echo $* '>' $tmp.pipe '1>&2' >> $tmp.pre echo rm $tmp.run >> $tmp.pre chmod 700 $tmp.pre mv $tmp.pre $tmp.run cat $tmp.pipe rm $tmp.pipe With that, I can run an arbitrary command with a delay of not more than one second. (And yes, I know there are all kinds of security issue involved in that)

  • Why does notepad crash on desktop files in the save-as dialog?

    Here's a puzzling problem - maybe somebody has an idea. Right now I am out of ideas. On Win7 64bit, the following crashes Notepad: On Desktop, right click, select "New | Text Document". This creates "New Text Document.txt". Right click on that file, select "Edit". This opens notepad with the empty file. Select "File | Save as": Notepad crashes and Win7 reports that "Notepad has stopped working". Now, move the file to c:\temp and repeat steps 2 and 3: no crash this time and the save-as dialog appears normally. I can create similar steps for the "open" dialog. Things I have tried: Safe mode - does not work, same problem Create a new user and try again logged in as that user - no crash Name file differently, or create elsewhere and then move to desktop - same problem Use Wordpad instead - same problem Review shell extensions with ShellExView - nothing extraordinary here Stare at the event log entries for each of the crashes. Does not enlighten me. At time of crash look at the process explorer stack view. Hangs at a function "TaskDialog". sfc.exe /scannow repaired some files but the problem persists.   • Windows7: Howto force a "do you really want to shutdown?" dialog

    Sometimes I wanted to choose "logout current user", but then I hit "Shutdown" by accident. Nearly everywhere else Windows7 is asking "do you really want to do this Yes/No". But that's not the case when I hit the "Shutdown" button. Windows7 shuts down immediately without giving me the chance to correct my mistake. Q1: So I am wondering why Windows7 shuts down immediately without asking "really do that?" in this case. Q2: Is there a way to change this behavior? E.g. Could I force Windows7 to display a dialog asking "Do you really want to shutdown ?". ADDED: I am running Windows7 Professional 64bit. ADDED: I tried to change this behavior with the policy editor. It seems to be very easy to completely remove the Shutdown button from the start menu. But I couldn't find an entry to turn on such a Yes/No dialog.

  • Why don't xUnit frameworks allow tests to run in parallel?

    Do you know of any xUnit framework that allows to run tests in parallel, to make use of multiple cores in today's machine? I don't... If none (or so few) of them does it, maybe there is a reason... Is it that tests are usually so quick that people simply don't feel the need to paralellize them? Is there something deeper that precludes distributing (at least some of) the tests over multiple threads? Thanks!

Example: Two options: Install ubuntu-gnome-desktop or kubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktopetc. (official & recognized derivatives) alternatively on Ubuntu (Default -Unity Desktop) Use (Run) perticular distro/flavour Ubuntu-Gnome or Kubuntu or Xubuntu etc. I want to know is both method working same performance? and which is proper method to use Desktop Environment.

I am running 64-bit 12.10. Is there a way to correct this problem?
