• Verbosity Isn’t Always a Bad Thing

  There was a message posted to the Rhino.Mocks forums yesterday about verifying a single parameter of a method that accepted 5 parameters.  The code looked like this:   [TestMethod] public void ShouldCallTheAvanceServiceWithTheAValidGuid() { _sut.Send(_sampleInput); _avanceInterface.AssertWasCalled(x => x.SendData( Arg<Guid>.Is.Equal(Guid.Empty), Arg<string>.Is.Anything, Arg<string>.Is.Anything, Arg<string>.Is.Anything, Arg<string>.Is.Anything)); } Not the prettiest code, but it does work. I was going to reply that he could use the “GetArgumentsForCallsMadeOn” method to pull out an array that would contain all of the arguments.  A quick check of “args[0]” would be all that he needed.  But then Tim Barcz replied with the following: Just to help allay your fears a bit...this verbosity isn't always a bad thing.  When I read the code, based on the syntax you have used I know that for this particular test no parameters matter except the first...extremely useful in my opinion. • West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 Meeting Recap

  As the saying goes, it’s better late than never. Such is the case with my overdue West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 meeting report. Our August meeting was full of both knowledge and adventure. It comes as no surprise that the knowledge was brought to us by our favorite DotNetNuke Technical Evangelist, Will Strohl. Will introduced and thoroughly presented the new social features in DNN 6.2. Unfortunately, our meeting date coincided with Hurricane Isaac having just passed us by. Aside from road closures and floods that kept public schools closed for two days, our meeting host, PC Professor, had to close the school the day of our meeting on a short notice due to flooding which we found out about at midnight on the day of the event.  This left us scrambling to find an available alternate meeting location close enough to our original venue. Cancelling the meeting was always an option, but we opted to keep it as the very last resort. Luckily, we were fortunate to find a meeting room at the Hampton Inn only a few minutes away from our original location. Having heard of our challenge, our event sponsor, Applied Innovations, stepped-in and covered the meeting room cost in addition to the food and beverages. We would like to thank our volunteers and sponsors who made that event a success: Jess Coburn, CEO and Cara Pluff, Director of Sales at Applied Innovations, Dave Noderer for suggesting the alternate venue and Venkat Subramanian for his hard work keeping our members informed of the venue change and for being our event photographer.   We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings: -September 25th, 2012 with Jonas Stawski, Microsoft MVP -October 23rd, 2012 with our Microsoft Developer Evangelist, Joe “DevFish” Healy -Ending an exciting year will be our November 27th meeting with Dycom Industries’ Senior Software Developer, Tom Huynh.   All the best, --Sam

• Your finger prints may unlock your iPhone and it’s digital wallets

  The next version of iPhone is going to have a biometric sensor which may allow your finger prints to authenticate and authorize – unlock the device, sign in to an account, authorize a credit card transaction, etc . The iOS 7 beta 4 released couple of days ago had many traces of biometric software libraries embedded in the OS and they make it pretty clear that Apple is preparing a new iPhone with finger sensor. Biometric sensors are not something new in digital devices. Most of us have been already using them on your laptops to unlock the computers as well as to launch applications. Though these sensors are available in many devices, they are hardly reliable. My personal laptop has a biometric sensor and half of the time either it does not work or it does not recognize my finger prints. When works, it works like a charm and very easy to unlock my device. But Apple is known for delivering great products by nailing down technical challenges and blending technology with beautiful user interfaces.  They had been doing when Steve Jobs was leading the pack and hope his legacy will be carried forward by Tim Cook by delivering amazing products in coming months.  I expect iPhone finger sensors to work flawlessly. • Alice In Wonderland: Good, but not Great

  We went to see Alice In Wonderland today. We both like Tim Burton a lot (the stranger the better) and like Johnny Depp very well also. After seeing all the previews and such, we were fired up to see this film. Honestly, I thought it was good but not great. I was prepared to be wow-ed, but I wasn't. Perhaps I expected too much. I did like it, but I'll not own it nor would I expect to see it again...unless someone I know decides they want to see it. I was about to say something to reassure you that I wasn't going to provide any spoilers but two things occurred to me: one, I never give spoilers and two, why worry about spoilers for a film that so closely follows a book? My comments about the film are hard to describe, but the basic gist is that it doesn't really feel like it..."works" to me. I can't get any more specific than that, much as I'd like to do so. Something about it seems sort of disjointed and not in that Alice way you'd expect. My only specific comment is that I didn't like the actor who plays Alice very well. She was very flat and just didn't sell he character to me. She seemed a bit, well, plastic. Depp was as good as you'd expect him to be, I am happy to say. Obviously Lewis Carroll couldn't have imagined this made into film, but I can't help thinking that he'd see this and say that Depp was the perfect Mad Hatter. So, I'd definitely recommend seeing it (we saw it in 3D which was cool, but not really necessary) at least once, but don't be surprised if you're kinda meh afterwards.

• Programming concepts taken from the arts and humanities

  After reading Paul Graham's essay Hackers and Painters and Joel Spolsky's Advice for Computer Science College Students, I think I've finally gotten it through my thick skull that I should not be loath to work hard in academic courses that aren't "programming" or "computer science" courses. To quote the former: I've found that the best sources of ideas are not the other fields that have the word "computer" in their names, but the other fields inhabited by makers. Painting has been a much richer source of ideas than the theory of computation. — Paul Graham, "Hackers and Painters" There are certainly other, much stronger reasons to work hard in the "boring" classes. However, it'd also be neat to know that these classes may someday inspire me in programming. My question is: what are some specific examples where ideas from literature, art, humanities, philosophy, and other fields made their way into programming? In particular, ideas that weren't obviously applied the way they were meant to (like most math and domain-specific knowledge), but instead gave utterance or inspiration to a program's design and choice of names. Good examples: The term endian comes from Gulliver's Travels by Tom Swift (see here), where it refers to the trivial matter of which side people crack open their eggs. The terms journal and transaction refer to nearly identical concepts in both filesystem design and double-entry bookkeeping (financial accounting). mkfs.ext2 even says: Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done Off-topic: Learning to write English well is important, as it enables a programmer to document and evangelize his/her software, as well as appear competent to other programmers online. Trigonometry is used in 2D and 3D games to implement rotation and direction aspects. Knowing finance will come in handy if you want to write an accounting package. Knowing XYZ will come in handy if you want to write an XYZ package. Arguably on-topic: The Monad class in Haskell is based on a concept by the same name from category theory. At the latest MVP summit (beginning of March 2011), he took over a DVD about WPF 4 and Silverlight 4 and asked a few Microsoft superstars to sign it. Right now, the DVD is auctioned on eBay and of course the proceeds will go to a charitable work: The German League against Cancer (Deutsche Krebshilfe). Now i wanted to login with me made ftp username and password, but every time i try i get the 530 Login authentication failed message. But i am sure that the password is 100% ok. Someone an idea? • The Retail Week Conference 2012 - Interview with Paul Dickson

  Recently we attended the Retail Week Conference at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel in London. The conference proves to be an inspirational meeting of retail minds and the insight gained from both the speakers and the other delegates is invaluable. In particular we enjoyed hearing from Charlie Mayfield, Chairman at John Lewis Partnership, about understanding how the consumer is viewing the ever changing world of retail; a session on how to encourage brand-loyal multichannel activities from Robin Terrell of House of Fraser with Alan White of the N Brown Group, Vince Russell from The Cloud and Lucy Neville-Rolfe from Tesco; and a fascinating session from Tim Steiner, Chief Executive of Ocado, about how the business makes it as easy as possible for consumers to shop on their various platforms, which included some surprising usage statistics. Oracle's own Vice President of Retail, Paul Dickson, also held a session with Richard Pennycook, Group Finance Director at Morrisons, about the role of technology in accelerating and supporting the business strategy. Morrisons' 'Evolve' programme takes a litte-and-often approach to updating its technology infrastructure to spread cost and keep the adoption process gentle for staff, and the session explored how the process works and how Oracle's technology underpins the programme to optimise their operations using actionable insight. We had a quick chat with Paul Dickson at the session to get his thoughts on the programme - the video is below. • PASS 13 Dispatches: Memory Optimized = On

  I'm at the PASS Summit in Charlotte for the Day 1 keynote by Quentin Clarke, Corporate VP of the data platform group at Microsoft. He's talking about how SQL Server 2014 is “pushing boundaries” and first up is SQL Server 2014's In-Memory OLTP technology (former codename “hekaton”) It is a feature that provokes a lot of interest and for good reason as, without any need for application rewrites or hardware updates, it can enable us to ensure that an application can find in memory most or all of the data it needs, and can lead to huge improvements in processing times. A good recent hekaton use cases article talks about applications that need a “Shock Absorber” when either spikes or just a high rate of incoming workload (including data in ETL scenarios) become a primary bottleneck. To get a really deep look at this technology, I would check out David DeWitt's summit keynote tomorrow (it will be live streamed). Other than that, to get started I'd recommend Kalen Delaney's whitepaper. She offers a lot of insight into how it works and how to start to define memory-optimized tables, and natively compiled stored procedures. These memory-optimized tables uses completely optimistic multi-version concurrency control – no waiting on locks! After that, Tom LaRock has compiled a useful set of links to drill deeper, and includes one to Microsoft's AMR tool to help you gauge the tables that might benefit most. Tony.

• Unable to install updates on 14.04 LTS

  I have been getting update notifications for a few weeks now but whenever I attempt to install them I get this message; The upgrade needs a total of 74.6 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please free at least an additional 29.8 M of disk space on '/boot'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. First of all I don't have permission to access /boot (don't know why as its a standalone machine and i'm the only user). Secondly, I emptied the trash; Thirdly, I launched Terminal and entered sudo apt-get clean I was a asked for a sudo password. I entered my system password. Re-entered sudo apt-get clean. The cursor stopped blinking - I assumed it was doing it's "thing". I let it go for about 10 minutes then exited Terminal. Tried to install the updates but just got the same message. Is there something i'm ignorant of? • Restarting Hudson - Windows Installation

  Whenever I update/install a new plugin or update hudson. Once the new plugin/update has been installed a button appears "Restart when no jobs are running." If I click this button hudson appears to try to restart but then just hangs. Has anyone else experienced this? Can hudson be forced to restart another way? I've tried restarting the service but this has no effect. I've asked this question over at stack overflow, so will update this if I get an answer from there. Thanks Tom
