• How to organize a large number of objects

  We have a large number of documents and metadata (xml files) associated with these documents. What is the best way to organize them? Currently we put them into a series of nested folders: /repository/category/date(when they were loaded into our db)/document_number.pdf and .xml We use the path as a unique identifier for the document in our system. This is more versatile than putting them all in a single flat folder. also it is independent from our database/application, so we can reload them in case of failure. Yet, it introduces some limitations. for example we can't move the files once they've been placed in this structure, also it takes work to put them this way. What is the best practice? How websites such as Scribd deal with this problem?

• Parsing C#, finding methods and putting try/catch to all methods

  I know it sounds weird but I am required to put a wrapping try catch block to every method to catch all exceptions. We have thousands of methods and I need to do it in an automated way. What do you suggest? I am planning to parse all cs files and detect methods and insert a try catch block with an application. (My application is internet connection based app.) If I've put the app to the android market, can user who bought the app pass to anyone ? How is its security (I mean safe of .apk file) ? • Fine tune some SQL called multiple times

  Hi all, I currently have an SQL query which is currently called multiple times like this (pseudo code): foreach(KeyValuePair kvp in someMapList) { select col1 from table where col2 = kvp.key and col3 = kvp.value; //do some processing on the returned value } The above could obviously call the database a large number of times if it is a big list of pairs. Can anyone think of a more efficient piece of SQL which could essentially return a list of specific values based on a list of two unique pieces of information so that the processing can be done in bulk? One obvious one would be to build up a big piece of SQL with ORs but this would probably be quite inefficient? Thanks Carl

• Foreign key onto weak entity set in MS SQL Server 2008?

  I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio to create a relational schema by following an Entity-Relationship diagram. (included below; unrelated details removed) Until now, primary and foreign keys have been working as expected. But when I try to create a foreign key from the entity relationship takes onto the weak entity set section, I get an error. Section is identified by a composite primary key in the context of course, which has course_id as a primary key. Therefore, the primary key of section is a 4-way composite key. The entity relationship takes needs to refer to section, so it includes all 4 primary attributes from section in it's own primary key. When trying to establish a foreign key relationship from takes to section, Studio gives the following error: The columns in table 'section' do not match an existing primary key or UNIQUE constraint. Am I doing something wrong, or is this an unsupported configuration? I can provide more details or the SQL schema if necessary.

• Adding existing entity to navigation property of a different entity

  I'm using EF4 and I'm running into a problem when I try to do something that looks quite trivial to me. I have two entities, let's call them A and B. These entities have a many-to-many association between them with a navigation property on A that contains a list of related B entities. What I want to do is to add existing B entities to a new A entity. When I try to do that, I get an exception: AcceptChanges cannot continue because the object's key values conflict with another object in the ObjectStateManager. Make sure that the key values are unique before calling AcceptChanges. Has anyone run into such a problem?

• How to import classes into other classes within the same file in Python

  I have the file below and it is part of a django project called projectmanager, this file is projectmanager/projects/models.py . Whenever I use the python interpreter to import a Project just to test the functionality i get a name error for line 8 that FileRepo() cannot be found. How Can I import these classes correctly? Ideally what I am looking for is each Project to contain multiple FileRepos which each contain and unknown number of files. • SQL Joing on a one-to-many relationship

  Ok, here was my original question; Table one contains ID|Name 1 Mary 2 John Table two contains ID|Color 1 Red 2 Blue 2 Green 2 Black I want to end up with is ID|Name|Red|Blue|Green|Black 1 Mary Y Y 2 John Y Y Y It seems that because there are 11 unique values for color and 1000's upon 1000's of records in table one that there is no 'good' way to do this. So, two other questions. Is there an efficient way to get this result? I can then create a crosstab in my application to get the desired result. ID|Name|Color 1 Mary Red 1 Mary Blue 2 John Blue 2 John Green 2 John Black If I wanted to limit the number of records returned how could I do something like this? Where ((color='blue') AND (color<>'red' OR color<>'green')) So using the above example I would then get back ID|Name|Color 1 Mary Blue 2 John Blue 2 John Black I connect to Visual FoxPro tables via ADODB. • Django: Overriding the clean() method in forms - question about raising errors

  I've been doing things like this in the clean method: if self.cleaned_data['type'].organized_by != self.cleaned_data['organized_by']: raise forms.ValidationError('The type and organization do not match.') if self.cleaned_data['start'] > self.cleaned_data['end']: raise forms.ValidationError('The start date cannot be later than the end date.') But then that means that the form can only raise one of these errors at a time. Is there a way for the form to raise both of these errors? • Custom filename in a rolling Log4Net logfile?

  Hello We have a ASP .Net application whereby we use Log4Net to log details within the app - nothing new there - and the rolling log filenames are in the usual format of: rolling-log.txt rolling-log.txt.1 rolling-log.txt.2 etc. A each user of the application adds to the logfile, the logfile can be difficult to read for a specific user's case and so, we'd like to modify the config file somehow to record the user's log details individually, each writing to a specific file, e.g. <applicationId>rolling-log.txt <applicationId>rolling-log.txt.1 <applicationId>rolling-log.txt.2 etc. where is each user's unique application Id, made up of a five digit number, e.g. 12345rolling-log.txt Any ideas on the best way to implement this, assuming that it's possible?   This might be implementation specific so the question regards how SQL databases is generally implemented. Say I have a database looking like this; Product with columns [ProductName] [Price] [Misc] [Etc] Order with columns [OrderID] [ProductName] [Quantity] [Misc] [Etc] ProductName is primary key of Product, of some string type and unique. OrderID is primary key and of some integer type, and ProductName being a foreign key. Say I change the primary key of Product to a new column of integer type ie [ProductID] Would this reduce the database size and optimize lookups joining these two tables (and likewise operations), or are these optimizations performed automatically by (most/general/main) SQL database implementations?

  The Model-View-ViewModel is very popular with WPF and Silverlight. I've been using this for my most recent projects, and am a very large fan. I understand that it's a refinement of MVP. However, I am wondering exactly what unique characteristics of WPF (and Silverlight) allow MVVM to work, and prevent (or at least make difficult) this pattern from working using other frameworks or technologies. I know MVVM has a strong dependency on the powerful data binding technology within WPF. This is the one feature which many articles and blogs seem to mention as being the key to WPF providing the means of the strong separation of View from ViewModel. However, data binding exists in many forms in other UI frameworks. There are even projects like Truss that provide WPF-style databinding to POCO in .NET. What features, other than data binding, make WPF and Silverlight uniquely suited to Model-View-ViewModel?

• How to change id value when using Html.DropDownListFor helper in asp.net mvc 2.0?

  Hi I have a partial view that has something like this <%= Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.SelectedProductName, Model.ProductList, "Select a Product") %> Now you can create a new product and edit a existing product. Both editing and creating use the same form. The create is on the main page on load up. Edit popus up in a jquery u.i model dialog and renders a new partial view. So as far as the page is concerned is that I have 2 dropdown boxes with the same "id" which is bad since they should be unique. So how do I change the id? So when the edit loads it might have a id of "editSelectedProductName"? I tried to do this in the view model public string SelectedProductName{ get; set; } ViewModelConstructor() { SelectedProductName = "EditSelectedProductName"; } But it seems to not care and keeps using "SelectedProductName" as the product name. • Canonical Link as a Way of Fighting Scrapers?

  Hi, Let's say several external sites are scraping/harvesting your content and posting it as their own. Let's also say that you maintain a single unique/permanent URL for each piece of content, so that content aliasing (on your site) is never an issue. Is there any value from an SEO perspective to including a canonical link in your header anyway, such that when your site is "scraped", the canonical indication is injected into whatever site is stealing your content (assuming they harvest the raw HTML rather than going in through RSS etc.)? I've heard different things about the behavior of cross-site canonical links, from "they're ignored" to "behavior undefined" to "it can't hurt" to "sure that's exactly what canonical is intended for". My impression was that canonical was a good way of dealing with intra-site but not necessarily inter-site aliasing. Thanks~

• Windows Vista, Default Programs API, file format associations, and (un)installers - explosive mix!

  My application is a rather well behaved Windows citizen, so when I ported it to Windows Vista/7 I replaced my custom file format association code with support for the Default Programs API. However I ran into a problem when trying to make uninstaller for my application - there seems to be no way to remove file format associations via Default Programs API. I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::ClearUserAssociations but it actually removes all associations, including the ones for other applications - completely restoring default state of the OS (which is of course unacceptable). I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::SetAppAsDefault to return file format associations to the previous "owner" - but it does not help, because my application handles many unique file formats which the OS does not support and there is no previous "owners". And Windows does not allow to pass empty strings to SetAppAsDefault... So what do I do? Any good solutions?

• Amazon S3 Change file download name

  I have files stored on S3 with a GUID as the key name. I am using a pre signed URL to download as per S3 REST API I store the original file name in my own Database. When a user clicks to download a file from my web application I want to return their original file name, but currently all they get is a GUID. How can I achieve this? My web app is in salesforce so I do not have much control to do response.redirects all download the file to the web server then rename it due to governor limitations. Is there some HTML redirect, meta refresh, Javascript I can use? Is there some way to change the download file name for S3 (the only thing I can think of is coping the object to a new name, downloading it, then deleting it). I want to avoid creating a bucket per user as we will have a lot of users and still no guarantee each file with in each bucket will have a unique name Any other solutions?

• Specify which row to return on SQLite Group By

  I'm faced with a bit of a difficult problem. I store all the versions of all documents in a single table. Each document has a unique id, and the version is stored as an integer which is incremented everytime there is a new version. I need a query that will only select the latest version of each document from the database. While using GROUP BY works, it appears that it will break if the versions are not inserted in the database in the order of version (ie. it takes the maximum ROWID which will not always be the latest version). Note, that the latest version of each document will most likely be a different number (ie. document A is at version 3, and document B is at version 6). I'm at my wits end, does anybody know how to do this (select all the documents, but only return a single record for each document_id, and that the record returned should have the highest version number)?

• Issue with jQuery ajax post (working with get). error 12031

  hi, UPDATE: I didn't set the response mimetype to 'application/json'. It works now. In the website I'm working on (http://piem.org:8000/) I've got an issue with an ajax post request. Every time the search button is clicked or the google maps 'idle' is triggered I send a request to get some data. While the request works as expected in most cases, it returns an error when I click a result and come back to the search page. (type 'barcelona' in the search box to get the unique restaurant in the db). The server processes the request properly but it seems that the error occurs when the javascript receives it (it returns a "12031" error code). It works properly with FF 3.0.6, IE 8.0 and Chrome 5.0 with GET, and with FF with both POST and GET. Anybody can help? thanks jul

• Why can't I declare C# methods virtual and static?

  I have a helper class that is just a bunch of static methods and would like to subclass the helper class. Some behavior is unique depending on the subclass so I would like to call a virtual method from the base class, but since all the methods are static I can't create a plain virtual method (need object reference in order to access virtual method). Is there any way around this? I guess I could use a singleton.. HelperClass.Instance.HelperMethod() isn't so much worse than HelperClass.HelperMethod(). Brownie points for anyone that can point out some languages that support virtual static methods. Edit: OK yeah I'm crazy. Google search results had me thinking I wasn't for a bit there.

• How can I scrape the current webpage with php/javascript?

  I have made the following webpage for generating interactive todo lists: http://robert-kent.com/todo/todo.php Basically, the user pastes a numbered todo list and each task is placed into it's own div with a unique id. Users can add notes to the tasks (done with javascript) and can click the green check when the task is done to hide it. I'd like to add an Export button which would generate a report of which tasks were completed and which were not, along with the user-entered notes. After a bit of searching I understand that what I want to do is scrape the page, but I haven't the faintest idea of the best way to do it. Many of the articles and tutorials I have found with Google involve scraping other sites and don't really explain how I could iterate over each div on the page.   I have multiple users with multiple entries recording times they arrive at destinations Somehow, with my select query I would like to only show the most recent entries for each unique user name. Here is the code that doesn't work: SELECT * FROM $dbTable GROUP BY xNAME ORDER BY xDATETIME DESC This does the name grouping fine, but as far as showing ONLY their most recent entry, is just shows the first entry it sees in the SQL table. I guess my question is, is this possible? Here is my data sample: john 7:00 chris 7:30 greg 8:00 john 8:15 greg 8:30 chris 9:00 and my desired result should only be john 8:15 chris 9:00 greg 8:30

• Django BigInteger auto-increment field as primary key?

  Hi all, I'm currently building a project which involves a lot of collective intelligence. Every user visiting the web site gets created a unique profile and their data is later used to calculate best matches for themselves and other users. By default, Django creates an INT(11) id field to handle models primary keys. I'm concerned with this being overflown very quickly (i.e. ~2.4b devices visiting the page without prior cookie set up). How can I change it to be represented as BIGINT in MySQL and long() inside Django itself? I've found I could do the following (http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/models/fields/#bigintegerfield): class MyProfile(models.Model): id = BigIntegerField(primary_key=True) But is there a way to make it autoincrement, like usual id fields? Additionally, can I make it unsigned so that I get more space to fill in? Thanks!

  Hi, Recently I have joined a new project team where in the java application logs have logged messages in a non-formal way[can't think of suitable word]. here how they look :-) <message> for info messages :-| <message> for warn :-( <message> for error besides there's also ASCII art drawing , different one for each log when that particular service starts up or is killed .And there many more styles for certain application events. iam not sure if it has any significant overhead on the application or not.
