• Can I install Ubuntu 13.10 without the internet?

  I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I'm currently out of town and the dorm I am living in has terrible internet connection. It won't be another 2-3 weeks before I can go home and have proper internet connection. So my question is whether or not I can install Ubuntu 13.10 in my laptop without the internet and then do the updates once I go home? Also, I'm attempting to do a dual boot with my Lenovo G505s which was pre-installed with Windows 8. Hopefully I can pull this off. I already did the necessary things (I think and hope so) prior to installation: Disable secure boot Enable legacy and boot UEFI first Create partition Put installer in my pen drive As I am quite new to this, any advice would be of great help. Thanks in advance! EDIT: I tried yesterday. The installation asked me to connect to the internet, so I used my crappy dorm internet. When it reached the downloading/installtion of Ubuntu One, it just stopped and went on forever. So I had to stop it.

• How do I reset/update my BIOS for Optiplex GX280?

  So far this has been a nightmare for me, which has been frustrating me constantly. I am using Dell Optiplex GX280 with Windows XP home edition, which is running a BIOS version A04. Recently, i've rebooted the pc to find out that its not booting. It will get to the Windows boot up screen with the progress bar but only to restart to the same process again, over and over. Frustrated that I am, i've inserted the Windows recovery CD to at least either repair of reinstall the operating system to find out that was not possible. I hit F8 to have the boot options, each of the boot option that I've selected gave me an error saying: "Selected boot device is not available." Right after that, I went to the BIOS setting and did a diagnostic test, which recognized all the Boot devices onboard. Now, I cannot even repair of reinstall Windows XP, because the system is not booting from none of the boot devices. The surprise is when I removed the hard-drive from the computer and loaded it on into another computer successfully; that's right, there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. After that I was totally puzzled. I found a few pointers online saying that the BIOS start-up block might be corrupted itself and I might need to flash/update the BIOS. I found the detailed instruction on how to create a Boot up disk by downloading the BIOS firmware from the manufacture's website. I did exactly as instructed below: Download the latest version or your choose version of BIOS file for your computer or motherboard from the manufacturer’s support site. Rename the downloaded file to AMIBOOT.ROM. Copy the file to a floppy disk. Insert the floppy disk to the floppy drive. Turn on the system. After I did that and powered on the PC to boot from the floppy drive, it gave me this error message: "Non-System Disk or Disk Error. Replace and Strike any key when ready." I did all that, and I kept on pressing [Ctrl]+[Home] to force it, but it did not did any satisfying result. Desperate as I am, my next attempt is to try the instruction below. Since I want to be ready, in the event it does not work, do you have any solution that you can provide? Please keep in mind that I cannot boot from any of the devices at this moment. My only hope now is to come on with a solution that will work through the Floppy drive, since that's the only drive that affected. Thank you very much for your advice and support in advance. To create a Windows startup disk, insert a floppy disk into the drive of a similarly configured, working Windows XP system, launch My Computer, right-click the floppy disk icon, and select the Format command from the context menu. When you see the Format dialog box, leave all the default settings as they are and click the Start button. Once the format operation is complete, close the Format dialog box to return to My Computer, double-click the drive C icon to access the root directory, and copy the following three files to the floppy disk: Boot.ini NTLDR Ntdetect.com

  I'm trying to run from the live USB to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my Windows Machine (as I've grown a touch sick of Windows). However, whenever I boot into the LiveUSB session after a few moments the Unity desktop locks up (except the mouse pointer, which I can move). Is this something to do with the fact I've got an NVidia 580 GTX? I've heard of issues with Ubuntu and this card. I've also got an SSD, but given that it's booting from USB I shouldn't think that's an issue.   I am having an issue with Windows 7 changing the boot order everytime I start up. I have 4 partitions: boot linux windows. Grub is installed on the boot, and boots up both operating systems fine, however when I boot to Windows the bootable partition is changed to Windows and the MBR is rewritten. How do I stop this? Its rather annoying to have to boot, chroot and fix this problem everytime. I also don't want to use the Windows boot select.

  I downloaded the ubuntu on the USB. Then downloaded the windows installer. Restarted my computer. Till there was ok, but after a 40 minutes waiting the instalation isn't goind on.   We have hp rp2470 server running hp-ux 11.00, with LVM mirroring. As for redundancy we have second rp2470 same hw (same two processors, same ram, same two hdd’s, same number of lan cards). I want to clone first one to the second. For that purpose I am making ignite tape with the following command: make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 Ignite tape finishes without problems. When I boot second server from this ignate tape, server is starting to boot, and ignite restore finishes without any errors, only few notes, which are normal. However vmunix is not booting and when restore finishes, it boot to ISL prompt. From this I cannot boot /stand/vmunix. I tried to run recovery shell but no success. When recovery shell ask to do frecover to restore critical files, then I receive error: frecover(5405): unable to open /dev/rmt/0m At first I thought that the problem might be in the difference of the firmware version of the servers: fw version of production server is: Firmware Version 43.50 and fw version of backup server is: Firmware Version 42.19 So i did a fw upgrade of my backup server so that both servers are v43.50, and tried a recovery but again cant boot the system. Next I did another archive tape with -I (Interactive) flag: make_tape_recovery -I -x inc_entire=vg00 and tried recovery with it, again no good. I cannot find any error or warnings on ignite log, and I cannot boot hpux. I am only on ISL prompt.   I need to install two copies of the CentOS 5.5 (bank A and bank B) on different partitions of the same hard disk and install grub boot loader to another partition (visible from both banks). • Choppy/unresponsive keyboard and mouse pointer until suspend

  I had a problem where my mouse and keyboard would be choppy, the mouse pointer would work at 1-2 fps and the keyboard would keep missing letters as I was typing them. Since they were both USB I suspected there was a problem there immediately. Whenever I got this problem I would suspend the computer and start it again and the problem would be gone. The problem started appearing when I plugged the mouse and keyboard directly into the computer rather than the USB hub in the screen. I'm using a Logitech UltraX Flat and a Razer Lachesis, but I'm not sure if that matters.

• Changing internal home network ip address for connected devices

  I have a few computers at home. For each of the computers, I can see the internal home network ip address on any given device by typing in ifconfig in the terminal. If the device is connected to the home network via ethernet connection or via the built-in wireless connections in laptops, the internal ip address for each of the devices seems to be 192.168.0.X. However, when I connect one of the devices using an external usb modem wireless adapter, which connects to the home network through wireless, when I check the ip address via ifconfig, for some reason it gets assigned 192.168.42.X instead. Why are the ethernet and build in wireless connections getting 192.168.0.X, but the external usb wireless adapter gets 192.168.42.X? Most importantly, is it possible to force it to get an internal ip address of 192.168.0.X?

• Mount to /dev/sdb1 without password

  I am unable to mount a USB drive (or SD card) to my system without root access. When I plug in a USB drive, it is visible in the left column of Nautilus, but when I click on it to open it, I receive the error message Unable to mount 2.1 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/sdb1 I am able to mount the drive using sudo mount -w /dev/sdb1, but this causes problems for operations such as creating startup discs, which requires unmounting and remounting the drive. I suspect this problem may be caused by the fact that when I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, I had an SD card plugged in. This caused the system to stall during later startups, as it could not find this drive. I remedied this by editing a line of /etc/fstab to read /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 vfat noauto 0 0 However, I am dual booting Ubuntu with Windows XP, and I have no problem mounting the C: drive of the Windows system without root access, so I feel that this is a problem related to the mount point rather than mounting in general.

• How to force Empathy Internet Messaging to change default webcam?

  I just recently bought a new webcam. It is USB powered. For personal reasons, I wish to not use the built in webcam that came with my netbook. I want to use this new one. I love empathy, it is a great chat client. But, I can't seem to switch my default webcam in empathy from the built in webcam, to the one I just bought. So, is there a way to force empathy to use the USB powered webcam, rather than the built in webcam?
