  • Should we use Visual Studio 2010 for all SQL Server Database Development?

    Our company currently has seven dedicated SQL Server 2008 servers each running an average of 10 databases. All databases have many stored procedures and UDFs that commonly reference other databases both on the same server and also across linked servers. We currently use SSMS for all database related administration and development but we have recently purchased Visual Studio 2010 primarily for ongoing C# WinForms and ASP.NET development. I have used VS2010 to perform schema comparisons when rolling out changes from a development server into production and I'm finding it great for this task. We would like to consider using VS2010 for all database development going forward but as far as I understand, we would have to set up ALL databases as projects because of the dependencies on linked servers etc. My question is, do you have any experience using VS2010 for database development in a similar environment? Is it easy to use in tandem with SSMS or is it a one way street once VS2010 projects have been set up for all databases? Can you make any recommendations/impart any experience with a similar scenario? Thanks, Luke

  • MS SQL Server 2005 Express rebuild master DB problem

    Hi ! There has been a power loss on our server and i cannot start the SQL service because the master DB is corrupted (as the log states). I found many articles recommending running the setup.exe with optional parameters: This is what I did: I've downloaded SQLEXPR32.EXE from MS page and ran it The first problem was, that it extracted all the setup files and started the default installation procedure. (which was unuseful for me as I need those params). If I canceled it, all the extracted files disappeared. That's why I decided to copy the extracted files somewhere and than cancel the default installation. Now I'm trying to run the setup.exe from the extraction: setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=xxxxx it asks me if I want to rewrite the system db, which is what I need, but then while installing I get this error: *An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'SqlRun_SQL.msi'* Then it tries to install something and it states: cannot install because the same instance name already exists. But I don't want to install a new instance .. Any idea how to solve this, please? Thank you in advance !

  • Outlook express 6 crashes after "synchonizing account"

    [EDIT: Revised OE version to match reality] I use Outlook Express (OE) 6.00.3790.3959 to read newsgroups. I regularly scan through about 100 newsgroups. When I select a newsgroup, and then select "synchronize account", OE goes through the newsgroups visibly updating the unread message count. It gets apparantly to the end, and then comes back to check for Watched Conversations, of which I typically have a few scattered across the newsgroups. It invariably crashes with some kind of access fault. A dialog box pops up saying "Want to debug with "; I invariable say No, and the process goes away. I restart OE, select the newsgroup, and skip "Synchronize Account"; I am able to read news and everything seems just fine. This behavior has occurred since I set it up several months ago. Is the newsgroups database screwed up? Can I run something like CHKDSK or Outlooks PST repair to fix things up? Any suggestions as to what to do? The system is Windows XP 64 system installed in January 2008. I accept Windows Updates and install them on a regular basis. I use Outlook (not OE) for regular email an it behaves perfectly normally.

    ... like my title says... I cannot connect to my instance on sql server express from sql server standard... I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) Digging deep into the error, I found this Error Number: -1 Severity: 20 State: 0 and finally this...     In Visual Studio 2010, I have a number of unit tests. When I run multiple tests at one time using test lists, I sometimes reveive the following error for one or more of the tests: The agent process was stopped while the test was running. It is never the same test failing, and if I try to run the test again, it succeeds. I found this bug report on Connect, which seems to be the same problem, but it does not offer a solution. Has anyone else seen this behaviour ? How I can avoid it ?

  • How can I get the Visual Studio 2010 converstion wizard to come back up?

    When I first opened my website project with Visual Studio 2010 the conversion wizard came up and I said that I didn't want to convert the project. Now I'm ready to convert the project, but I can't find a shortcut or a way to get it back? I tried to remove the suo file, and that didn't do it. If I go into the project properties I can switch the target framework to 4.0, but that tells me it's going to close and reopen the project and I'll have to adjust the pages by hand - doesn't seem like very much fun. Anyone know how to get it to prompt again, or even a command line that would run it? Thank you!

    I know it's stupid but visual studio (2010) doesn't gray out my properties tagged with ReadOnlyAttribute, I can't edit their values (if I try to do it, simply return to the previous value), but they aren't grayed out, I think it's really boring this when using the editor Is there an option or an attribute that I'm forgetting?   • C++ linking issue on Visual Studio 2008 when crosslinking different projects on same solution

    I'm using Google Test Framework to set some unit tests. I have got three projects in my solution: FN (my project) FN_test (my tests) gtest (Google Test Framework) I set FN_test to have FN and gtest as references (dependencies), and then I think I'm ready to set up my tests (I've already set everyone to /MTd (not doing this was leading me to linking errors before)). Particularly, I define a class called Embark in FN I would like to test using FN_test. So far, so good.   • How to get Code Coverage working on a VS 2010 project?

    When I turn on Code Coverage in my test settings, on a project that references the Unity DI container I get the following error: Cannot initialize the ASP.NET project '{Project Name}'. The event log specifies the following reason: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.Unity, Version=2.0.414.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Strong name signature could not be verified. How do I get around this issue? I am running Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate on a Windows 7 X64 machine.

    Hello, I need to know wether or not to buy the VS 2010 premium or not. I have the database project working on my own version of vs 2008 team suite. My coworkers only have 2008 professional. We are moving to VS2010 now. We do not have MSDN licenses for our company right now. We are looking to buy just the VS2010 no MSDN. It is very pricey to get 6 of VS2010 premium. We need to get our database into source control. We are currently email scripts around, and it very difficult to keep track off. Are there any non-microsoft solutions that would be the same features and be free?

So I exited, restarted, etc to verify. Here's my repro steps Open existing project (I don't think it matters which one) Press ctrlf and give it something to search for (?) Press enter Press ctrlf Press enter goto 4 Can you reproduce a slowly expanding quick find window? Do I have some sort of wacky bugged out system? I'ld obviously like to submit a bug report to MS if this is indeed a viable repro.

  • VS 2010 Class Diagram Error "The type cannot be edited..."

    A few of the classes on a VS 2010 class diagram are displayed with a red title. The Class Details window shows all of the methods, properties, fields and correctly shows no events. However, there's an entry under each of methods, properties, fields and events that states where the name should be: "The type cannot be edited because the source code file contains an error." However, the source file builds with no errors or warnings. Anyone seen this? Any idea how to fix it?

    Why doesn't VS have any sort of line numbering? Is there any way to enable it, or a plugin for it? I know, the number of lines of code in a program doesn't matter, but sometimes it is nice to know how long a program is, or what line number something is for reference. I can't seem to find that as an option anywhere, to my surprise. Thanks for the help! This is Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate.   • How to migrate Outlook Express mail rules?

    I have a home computer that only had a 15Gb C: drive, and ran out of space with all the Microsoft Updates, etc, that keep coming down. So I fitted a 160Gb drive as a C: drive and altered the drive jumpers to make the old C: drive into a slave D: drive, to save migrating documents, etc. I've installed a clean copy of Windows XP SP3 and reassigned the new Outlook Express' mailstore path to point to the old mailstore folder that now has a D: drive letter - and it all works OK. However, my extensive list of mail rules have not been transferred to the new OE and I have not been able to identify how they are stored. To find it I added a new rule to the new OE, exited OE, then searched on the whole computer (including hidden/system files) for files altered around the time I added the rule. I hoped I could just overwrite a new empty file with an old one. But the only files that seem to be changed are Windows system-level files and some bits and pieces in the Windows\PreFetch sub-folder. None of them can be opened as XP has them locked, and none of them have names that are anything to do with email or rules. Does anyone know of any way of migrating OE rules, or do I have to re-enter them by hand? Thanks!

    I have a .Net 4.0 Windows application which requires access thru the firewall. I know about the netsh advfirewall firewall command, but I would like very much to have this program allowed at install time (the Click Once deployment). How can I add this command to execute as a post install command, exectuing as Administrator - i.e. The person doing the install does not have to execute the netsh advfirewall command separately or does not have to go to the Firewall and manually add the program in the Allowed list. I cannot find an area in Publish in Visual Studio 2010 to insert a post install command line execution.
