• Build a JavaScript wrapper for a rails-generated XML API?

  I am working with a large website written in Ruby on Rails. Thanks to the support for REST in Rails 2, the site's business logic is all accessible via a consistent XML API. Now I want to be able to easily write one or more JavaScript frontends to the site that interact with the generated Rails XML API. Ideally, an automated wrapper for the API could be created in JavaScript, since this would minimize the effort required in writing XML processing code for the more than 500 API functions. How, then, can I automatically generate a wrapper around a given XML API in JavaScript so that it's more pleasant to work with? I've worked with solutions of this nature for Java that generate classes and methods to wrap an API, so my current thinking is that I want something of that nature for JavaScript. I'd be open to an alternative take on the problem, though.

• Battery backed write cache behavior upon disk change

  We use 3ware Inc 9650SE SATA-II RAID PCIe RAID controllers with battery backed write cache. Our spare hardware has the same controller. I was wondering; are these controllers smart enough not to sync the cache when the disks have been changed? For example, if I deploy one of those spare machines by putting in the disks of another machine and that spare machine still has pending writes, will it be smart enough not to perform those writes on the replaced array? Edit: my scenario is not really made clear, so let me give an example: server1 goes down because of power supply failure. I put the disks in server2 and start. I repair server1 I put the disks back from server2 in server1 (it's not relevant right now that in reality I would probably keep server2 running). If server1 doesn't have safeguards, it will write to the array, thinking it's simply powering up again, corrupting it.

• Is there a free ftp client that has macros

  At the moment I'm using filezilla to deploy new versions of a site to the live server. the trouble is that there are one or two config, bootstrap etc. files which are different for the live site and I have to be careful not to overwrite. Also there are big areas of code that never change (eg I use the zend framework, which is always the same). I'd like to be able to record a macro to upload the same bunch of files and folders every time, excluding subdirectories and files which shouldn't be overwritten. Does any ftp client offer this?

• Strange/simple batch question regarding Java/Ant

  For my company, I'm making a batch script to go through and compile the latest revisions of code for our current project. I'm using Ant to build the class files, but encountered a strange error. One of the source files imports .* from a directory, where there are no files (only folders), and in fact, the folders needed are imported right after. It compiles perfectly fine in Eclipse, but I'm using an Ant script to automate it outside of the IDE, and Javac throws an error when it encounters this line. Is there any automated procedure I can use to ignore/suppress this error with javac in Ant? I'd even go so far as to create a dummy file in the importing directory, but all of that in contained in a Jar file I don't wish to have to decompress and then recompress with the dummy file. • How do I customize what a third party MSM does?

  I'm trying to convert a project in Visual Studio 2008 from static linking of the CRT to dynamic linking. This was easy enough, and I added the CRT MSM and policy MSM to my Wix file with no problems. I am not that happy with the MSI that is output though, it is much larger than what I expected. Looking at the MSI with Orca shows three copies of the CRT DLLs that I need. From looking at the conditions, one of the sets is used for pre-XP installs. Since the system requirements are XP and later, how do I remove this component without touching the original MSM? This needs to be done in an automated build, so Orca isn't a possible solution. Plus, when I tried it with Orca, the filesize remained the same after deleting the File and Component rows. And somewhat related, how do I set the permanent attribute in the components that remain?

• How to recover from failed Mysql schema update, with replication?

  I have two MySQL servers configured with master-slave replication. Before we deploy a new application version we: 1) STOP SLAVE 2) Take a MySQL dump of the slave. However, if a mistake is done during the deployment of the new schema version (a table is dropped by mistake, for example), having the slave intact doesn't help. Our service is write-intensive, so we can't turn it back up until we have a master working. If we now load the mysql dump back into the master, it will take a long time during which our service remains down. What is the best-practice to recover from such a mistake? How can I setup the system so I can easily promote the slave, turn on our service and only then tend to the broken database? Mainly, I'm worried with re-syncing the slave and the master after changes are done on the slave.

• Dynamically loading chef recipies from URLs

  I'm deploying a web app on AWS. I intend to use chef to build AMIs which I'll then put into production. I want to have Chef monitor a URL stored in simpleDB. The URL would point to a tarball in S3. There would be different URLs, one for a config tarball, one for a code tarball. When I update the URL in simpleDB, I want chef to spot this and pull in and apply the configs/deploy the code. Is this possible? Has anything like this been done before or would I need to roll my own code? I think Chef can monitor URLs, but how would be the best way of getting it to load that URL from simpleDB?

• How many VPS' can I create on my server?

  I need to create as many VPS's on my dedicated server (KVM or OpenVZ) in order to sell them but I really don't know the answer. RAM calculation is simple, it's more about CPU resources, how many VPS's can hold. I'am talking about Intel i7-2600 (4 cores, 8 Threads). I need to deploy as many VPS's. It's all about the nr threads? i.e. 8 threads = maximum 8 x 1vCPU or maximum 4 x 2vCPU? I'am planning to use 1Gb and 2Gb memory on each VPS, the server has 16Gb (but I can raise RAM if need it. So, can I create 8 KVM VPS's with 4 vCPU and 2Gb ram each ? How about 20 VPS's with 1Gb ram and 4vCPU each? How is this decision affected by the hypervisor (KVM, OpenVZ, VMware)?

• What port does OpenLink ODBC Driver use?

  I use Avaya Reporting Services and OpenLink ODBC Drivers for db connection. I know that it uses port 5000 for handshaking but after that I believe it uses an random port for communication. I want to deploy my application and it will communicate with the client's system in their datacenter. They are asking what ports should they open on their firewalls. I can't obviously give them a range above 50,000 that I know OpenLink ODBC Drivers use. Can someone tell me what port should I tell my client to open?

• Start tomcat webapp with root privileges

  I built a webapp that uses libpcap (via jpcap). In order to be able to get the network interfaces list or to bind to a network interface, the application (in this case a webaap that runs from tomcat server) must be running with root privileges. During development I simply ran Eclipse with root privileges (sudo eclipse) and my webapp worked just fine with Eclipse's local tomcat server. However, when I try to deploy my webapp to the "real" tomcat server, it isn't working. I Also tried to start the tomcat6 service with sudo and changed the TOMCAT6_USER definition (defined in /etc/init.d/tomcat6) from "tomcat6" to "root" but it made no difference. What should I do to make it work?

• Gotomeeting MSI needs elevated privs?

  Typically I can deploy MSIs with no issue, but the Gotomeeting one refuses to install. SCE lists it as pending and AD just attempts to install it, gives up, and never tries again. When I tried running it by double-clicking its icon, it told me "needs to run with elevated privs." I don't see how I can get AD or SCE to run it with these higher privs. I can run it by using an elevated command prompt and running msiexec from there. The MSI is the one labeled "GoToMeeting MSI Installer (ZIP)" from here: http://support.citrixonline.com/GoToMeeting/search?search=msi Any ideas? I run an environment where the users are non-admins and would love to be able to upgrade this centrally.

• Renting an "EC2" server VS buying one (for a start up in initial stages)

  We are a small start up in the early stages and are working on a SaaS-based Rails product. Currently, we use EC2 for a small instance and have a need for another large/extra-large instance as we are beginning to deploy to the Cloud and get ready to release our "alpha" version. While EC2 was my choice for numerous reasons (reliability, accessibility - small team is geographically dispersed, maintainability, and things of that nature), it appears to be rather expensive. While the product will ultimately be deployed in the Cloud (be it EC2 or otherwise) and that experience would help the development team, would it make sense to purchase a physical server and stick it in the basement or bite the bullet and pay the price for EC2 (or other Cloud Providers)? While such decisions are driven by numerous factors, it would certainly help to get the thoughts of other folks who may have been in similar situations. Hence, the post. Thanks much!

  Hi all, When I install Windows, I like to deploy a set of the same apps (for example, Firefox, Chrome, Trillian, 7-Zip, etc.). I'd prefer to have a way of doing it all in one sitting, and I seem to remember there being a way of bundling all the installers. I was able to find two, though neither of them (Almeza MultiSet, WPIW) look like what I was thinking of. Can anyone recommend other ways of running a whole set of installers at once? Thanks!   What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")

• PHP can be exclusively accessed by SWF

  I'm not sure how to describe this, but basically I have a PHP class file: class HelloHello { public function getSomeData($input_parameter){ // code to retrieve data from the database } public function deleteSomeData($input_parameter){ // code to delete data from the database } } This class is on the server and is part of the backend that connects with a database, and it's meant to be accessed by the frontend SWF only (not to be directly accessed). I've setup Flex to read this class and access it. But how do I make sure that someone doesn't develop a script that can call this php file directly and access its methods? For example using a script to add data in a fast automated way, or use the delete method directly, ouch. Is this a legitimate concern, or this can't be done?

  I have a PowerShell script that deploys about 12 web parts. They have all been created through Visual Studio 2010 and are being deployed to SharePoint 2010. I am getting the following error when running Install-SPSolution for one of my web parts: Install-SPSolution : This solution contains no resources scoped for a Web application and cannot be deployed to a particular Web application. Can someone help me debug this? Every other Install-SPSolution command uses -AllWebApplications, and I do not want to specify the web application directly using -URL. Here is the command that is breaking (this is the same command used to successfully deploy all 11 other web parts): Install-SPSolution –Identity PortalSelector.wsp -AllWebApplications -GACDeployment

• Simple NAT router for ESX

  Hi Guys, I'm looking for a simple virtual appliance that I can deploy to my ESX environment to use as a virtual NAT router / firewall to create an isolated network that I can easily give internet access too. Basic setup: ESX Host, has 2 vswitches configured: 1 is connected to the physical LAN, the other is isolated. I need an appliance that I can add 2 vNICs to, and attach one to the isolated vSwitch, the other to the LAN, to give the isolated network outbound access (so it can reach the internet). • Rsync plugin to many local wordpress installs via script or cli

  I am maintaining a large number of wordpress installs on a production server, and we are looking to deploy InfiniteWP for managing these installs. I am looking for a way to script the distribution of the plugin folder to all of these installs. On server wp-prod, all sites are stored in /srv//site/ The plugin needs to be copied from ~/iws-plugin to /srv//site/wp-content/plugins/ Here's some pseudo code to explain what I need to do: array dirs = <all folders in /srv> for each d in dirs if exits "/srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins" rsync -avzh --log-file=~/d.log ~/plugin_base_folder /srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins/ else touch d.log echo 'plugin folder for "d" not found' >> ~/d.log end end I just don't know how to make it happen from the cli or via bash. I can (and will) tinker with a bash or ruby script on my test server, but I'm thinking the command-line-fu here on SF is strong enough to handle this issue much more quickly than I can hack together a solution. • Bare minimal Chef provisioning and deployment?

  I've read the documentation on Chef twice over. I still can't wrap my head around it's concept because they skip but fundamentals and jump to complex deployments with chef-server. Using chef-solo and possibly knife, is there a simple way to provision a server and deploy? I may be wrong, but it seems like with my cookbooks prepped, this should be very simple. knife rackspace server create --flavor 1 --image 112 That provisions my server. I can optionally pass --run-list "recipe[mything]", but how do my cookbooks in ~/my_cookbooks actually get on the server? Do I have to manually transfer them? That seems counterproductive.

• Can I export a SharePoint list to an Excel file subdivided into separate worksheets?

  We have a SharePoint 2007 deployment which will have a substantially large document library. My client wants the ability to export this library to an Excel spreadsheet, but specifically wants the ability to divide the spreadsheet into several worksheets based on a specific field. Is this possible to accomplish in WSS 3.0, through the object model or otherwise? There is a out-of-the-box Export to Spreadsheet, but it does not appear to support automated subdivision of the list items into separate worksheets. I do not know if Excel Services that come with MOSS are capable of it, but we do not have MOSS so we cannot consider it an option for now.

• Is a class that is hard to unit test badly designed?

  I am now doing unit testing on an application which was written over the year, before I started to do unit-testing diligently. I realized that the classes I wrote are hard to unit test, for the following reasons: Relies on loading data from database. Which means I have to setup a row in the table just to run the unit test (and I am not testing database capabilities). Requires a lot of other external classes just to get the class I am testing to its initial state. On the whole, there don't seem to be anything wrong with the design except that it is too tightly coupled (which by itself is a bad thing). I figure that if I have written automated test cases with each of the class, hence ensuring that I don't heap extra dependencies or coupling for the class to work, the class might be better designed. Does this reason holds water? What are your experiences?

• Delete backup files older than 7 days

  Using osql command, SSQL backup of a database is created. It is saved to Disk. Then renamed to match the date of the day backup was taken. All these files are saved in a single folder all the time. for example: Batch1.bat does the following 1) Created backup.bak 2) renamed to backup 12-13-2009.bak (this is done by the combination of % ~ - etc to get the date parameter) This is now automated to take backup everyday by Task scheduler in Windows. Can the batch file also be modified to delete backup files older than 7 days? if so, how ? If it is not possible via batch file, other than manually deleting the files are there any other alternatives to automate the deleting job ? Thanks in advance, Balaji S
