• High disk time on sql-server

  Hi We have a dedicated sql-server 2008 r2 enterprise edition. The setup is: D: (data files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as log files) (raid 10) E: (log files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as data files) (raid 1) F: (transaction log backup) - stored remote on a SAN Today we moved our log files to new disks (from F: to E:). From a shared volume ( F:(SAN)) to dedicated local disks (E:). What then happend was that the "disk time", "avg. transfer time" and "avg disk write queue length" increased on the volume where we have the data files (D:) (not on the volume where the log files are located). The data volume and log volume does not share disks, however they share the same controller card. "Disk idle time" is low for all volumes. One thought is ofcourse that the controller card might be overloaded. But, we need more ideas on where the problem might be.

• DVI to HDMI - displaying bad.

  I currently have a computer with a ASUS EAH5770 (ATi Radeon HD 5770) 1GB GDDR5 video card, and 4GB ram, 2.6 GHZ i5 processor. I just switched from a DVI (the blue one) to an HDMI cable. (Bigben Flat cable HDMI 1.3c) I use a Samsung SyncMaster 2032 MW, which has a HDMI input. The weird thing is, that my screen is off-the-corner of the tv (so it's too wide) (1920x1080), and windows icons and text are not displaying well, though 1080p videos in YouTube are looking brilliant, just like pictures. So i think it has something to do with Windows. I already have the ATI Catalyst Control Center with the drivers i received with my video card. I do not currently know how to fix these problems. Do i have to reinstall Windows or so? Or is it (hopefully) easier?

• Headless HTML rendering to image on CentOS 5.4

  Hello, I have a project requirement to render HTML and capture the rendered image as a file on a headless CentOS 5.4 server. My specific requirements are: 1) Input will be a URL to the page to render, output will be an image file containing the rendered image of the page 2) CSS must be supported by the renderer up to CSS level-1 3) Static images in the page must be displayed properly in the rendered image, including any transparent color in .GIF files 4) Must be able to run on a headless CentOS 5.4 server. 5) Solution must not depend on any product or component that is not free for commercial use I do not need to do anything with the page other than get the screen capture and save it to an image. The hard part seems to be doing this in a headless environment. Some of the solutions that I've seen discussed need a display in order to work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jim

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • infiniband network between 3 servers

  Let's say I have 3 different servers, each one with an infiniband card. Each card has 2 different ports. (I don't know about the model yet) Is it possible to create 3 different networks and to allow the 3 servers to communicate with each other without any problems? (and any spof). I guess I just have to setup the /etc/hosts correctly. I really don't know about infiniband, so please help me :) Thanks in advance. EDIT: Point is to NOT USE a switch!

• How to disable VGA on new server... reversibly?

  Strange question here. I have a server with 1GB of RAM, however when booted this shows as 768MB. I've discovered the reason for it – and that is that it has an unboard graphics card which shares memory with main RAM. Running Ubuntu Server, it doesn't actually ever use anything graphical – it's all set up to be SSH'd into and therefore there's no need to use the VGA. I believe there may be a setting to switch off VGA/graphics card in BIOS, but my question to you guys is: is this recommended? and if I turn it off, then how would I turn it back on again in BIOS (given that with it off, I wouldn't be able to see the option to turn it on as there would be no graphics output!!)?

  I have a Macbook Pro at work and installed the current VirtualBox (3.2.4) today. However, after using the VHD image for IE 7 on XP SP3 on this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8ef&displaylang=en The Virtual Operating System (XP) just thought there is no network card provided by the PC (the virtual PC simulated by VirtualBox), even if I set up 4 network cards in Settings, as NAT, host only, etc. So the XP cannot browse any webpage at all... Does any integration package need to be added for VirtualBox to make it work and how? (is VirtualBox providing a "too advanced" network card so XP SP3 doesn't have the driver for it? thanks.

• Could a computer act (dependably) as a wireless router for 200+ clients? [closed]

  That is, I have a Core 2 Duo E7500 at 2.93GHz, with 2GB memory. I plan to install either Windows Server 2012 or Zeroshell 2.0RC1, and it also (planning to) includes two PCIe Wireless Card Adapters. It also has one ethernet port, and I will connect that to another machine which will be a Database and a Web Server. My plan is to have a corporate level wireless intranet with 200+ clients. I cannot afford to buy routers because I want to operate at zero costs as possible, utilizing my available resources. Is that plan plausible? Also, what minimum specs should my wireless card have? @SvenW: Oh, I meant corporate on the deployment level. I am still an undergraduate and this is more of an educational and expiremental work than an actual project. I got Windows Server 2012 for free though, and this isn't actually for commercial use.

• ATI Radeon Triple Monitor Setup

  I have a Dell XPS 8300, and its got an ATI Radeon HD6450 installed. When running Ubuntu 12.04 the triple monitors work flawlessly. I can change the default, turn them on/off etc ... The problem is Windows 7. It is behaving much like in this thread. I know the card supports three, as it WORKS PERFECTLY in the linux portion of my dual boot. Windows can "see" all three, but will only allow two. Is this a WIndows 7 / ATI compatibility issue, or is Windows 7 just stupid (rhetorical)? Had I not had a dual boot Linux box, I might have read the above thread and thought "damn, it just won't work". But I use three monitors every day on this card, so I know it works.... Just not with Windows.

  I have been having a problem with my computer where I am constantly getting static from the point I turn on my PC. I have changed Towers, Hard Drives, added and removed a Sound Blaster Xtreme Sound Card, used 3 different Headsets, and 2 sets of speakers. Lately I have noticed random dips in my frame rates when playing games. Is there any possibility that the graphics card could be causing the static with the possibility of it needing to go in for repairs?   Using microsoft DNS All/most of our local hosts ( with in ) are in following domain *.company.org So a host name will look like mymachine001.company.org Is it possible to set up wild card DNS entries of the form ? *.subd.company.com Note: The URL ends with .com, all other hosts so far ever set up in the DNS were of the format *.company.org what i am trying to achieve is the following. A user with in internal network types a url http://someprefix.subd.company.com in browser and enters. Since there is a wild card entry in DNS, the user gets routed to host mapped to *.subd.company.com in the DNS Note : at the same time, company.com has a public DNS entry and that is mapped to a physical IP in some other network (data center)

• How to print 4 index cards on a single A4 sheet in Word 2003

  I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

  Instead of populating the BitmapData class from an IMAGE. I would like to (within Actionscript) GENERATE some new BitmapData by capturing the Bitmap representing say, a TextArea component on the stage. In other words, sort of take a "screen capture" or "screenshot" of one of the components, and convert that into an image. Am I silly to even wonder if such a thing is feasible? Can an Air/Flex app "look at itself" in this way? Can it turn a datagrid or a canvas or a textinput into the corresponding image AS IF via screen capture? Even a hint in the right direction would be appreciated, Thanks In Advance.

• Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality?   I have a 4 port Digium card in there, and have 4 lines running smoothly. Now, we added ANOTHER 4 port card and have 4 more analog lines coming into the Trixbox server. It still runs the 4 fine, but what do I need to do to add the additional 4 phone numbers/lines? I want it to act exactly as before, there's nothing special about the new lines. • Completely clean previous Radeon drivers on Windows 7 64bit

  Recently I replaced my old Radeon HD 2600XT to Radeon HD 6770 from MSI. I had strange problem that after installing the newest Radeon drivers they exist only until first reboot. After reboot my new card is recognized as an old 2600. I tried to unintall ATI/AMD software completetely from Programs/Features, then reboot, then untinstall driver from device manager, then reboot, then system showed that display driver is regular VGA (and oldschool 640x480 resolutions). Then to be double sure I executed DriverCleaner3 and Driver sweeper. After the restart I installed the newest drivers from amd site but after restarting the system recognizes card as 2600. I'm completely lost. Perhaps Win7 64bit caches somewhere drivers? Are there any issues regarding drivers-shadowing or 32/64 mirroring? Reinstalling the system is not an option.

  I have 10 workstations with large monitors that have USB slots and several card readers built in. The card readers cannot be disabled and will map to drive letters when I image the computers. I go into Disk Management and delete the drive mappings and add mappings to a single folder in C:\ with a folder for each slot. I have to do this because of scripts that run that are expecting specific letter drive mappings to network resources. Is there a way to script the deleting and adding of drive mappings instead of having to use the Disk Management GUI manually on each workstation? The workstations are running XP Professional.

While I was talking to dell tech., he told me that Dell would charge me for the replacement monitor if I fail to return my defective monitor within 15 days. I don't know why he told me that when I didn't ask it. so here is my question. How are they going to charge me?? Dell does not have my credit card or bank account info. Do they store my credit card or bank account information on their database???

• HDMI Sound for HTPC

  I have the (perhaps) the same problem as stated in this other HDMI sound to HTPC question. I tried the advice of clicking on the speaker in the system tray. I can see the HDMI audio device I want to use. That device claims to be functioning properly. But there is no sound, and it won't let me select it as the active audio device. When I click on the troubleshooter, it says that there are no speakers connected. I would think this is because my computer us unable to pipe sound through the video card (preventing the HDMI from carrying it), except that it truly claims that it has an HDMI sound device that is working correctly. So I'm not sure what is wrong at this point. Thoughts? My system is Windows 7 x64. In case it makes a difference, the video card I'm using is this GeForce GTX 560

  I have bought a new video card based on the ATI Radeon HD 5670 chipset. I couldn't make it work with the latest ATI Catalyst drivers found on their website, only the drivers found on the CD delivered with the card worked. How can I know the version of Catalyst that is installed on my PC (running Windows 7 64-bits)?   I have a home server running headless (i.e. without a monitor), using ssh for remote access. This works fine most of the time, but I still need a graphics card and still need to drag out a monitor whenever I have to access BIOS, (re-)install the OS and similar. I know that there are business servers that let you control everything remotely (over Ethernet), including power up and BIOS access. Is this type of functionality available for "prosumer" class hardware? If so, where does it sit - should I look for motherboard support, a PCI-e card or an external device? And does this type of functionality have a name, so I know what to google for?

  Hi, I use the v4l2 api for video capture and image applying image processing algo' on each frame. I wish to be able to suspend the video capture. I see that there are 2 options for ioctling (new verb, its gonna catch) the stream. VIDIOC_STREAMON, VIDIOC_STREAMOFF will start and stop the stream. Is there a way to suspend \ resume it? Is this even necessary, or can I just use the start and stop controls with no extra processing time spent on creating the stream all over again ? Thank you for your time, Itamar

• fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

  I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)?
