  • synchronized block in JSP tag class

    - by Sudhakar
Hi, I am trying to find answer for the following ,for the past couple of days ,but couldnt find comprehensive answer Problem Statement I have a custom JSP tag class which handles a web form submission ,captures data and write it to same file in the filesystem. As all web applications, this can be triggeredsimultaneosly ,and i fear that multiple threads would be in action handling each of the submission (we all know thats how Servlet works.) CODE synchronized (this){ final String reportFileName = "testReport.csv"; File reportDir = new File( rootCsDirectory, "reports" ); if(!reportDir.isDirectory())reportDir.mkdir(); File reportFile = new File (reportDir, reportFileName); logReport(reportFile,reportContent.toString()); } ISSUE: - A File object can be opened by one thread for writing and at same time another thread might try to access and fail and throw an exception So i thought of synchronizing (on the object ) should solve the issue , but read some where that jsp engine would have pool of jsp tag objects, so i am afraid that synchronized (this) wont work and it should be changed to synchronized (this.getClass())

  • HTTP vs FTP upload

    - by Richard Knop
I am building a large website where members will be allowed to upload content (images, videos) up to 20MB of size (maybe a little less like 15MB, we haven't settled on a final upload limit yet but it will be somewhere between 10-25MB). My question is, should I go with HTTP or FTP upload in this case. Bear in mind that 80-90% of uploads will be smaller size like cca 1-3MB but from time to time some members will also want to upload large files (10MB+). Is HTTP uploading reliable enough for such large files or should I go with FTP? Is there a noticeable speed difference between HTTP and FTP while uploading files? I am asking because I'm using Zend Framework which already has HTTP adapter for file uploads, in case I choose FTP I would have to write my own adapter for it. Thanks!

  • mysql query: SELECT DISTINCT column1, GROUP BY column2

    - by Adam
Right now I have the following query: SELECT name, COUNT(name), time, price, ip, SUM(price) FROM tablename WHERE time >= $yesterday AND time <$today GROUP BY name And what I'd like to do is add a DISTINCT by column 'ip', i.e. SELECT DISTINCT ip FROM tablename So my final output would be all the columns, from all the rows that where time is today, grouped by name (with name count for each repeating name) and no duplicate ip addresses. What should my query look like? (or alternatively, how can I add the missing filter to the output with php)? Thanks in advance.

  • Compact a given array problem

    - by Bragaadeesh
Dont know whether this is a duplicate, but this was an interview question asked to me. Given an array of random numbers and -1 placed inbetween, I have to compact the array meaning all the -1s are to be replaced and the final output should be the last valid index with the fresh array. For example. Input: 3 4 -1 -1 -1 5 8 -1 8 Output: 3 4 5 8 8 5 8 -1 8 and last valid index is 4 Input: -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 2 Output: 2 -1 -1 -1 -1 2 and last valid index is 0 Input: -1 -1 -1 3 3 3 Output: 3 3 3 3 3 3 and last valid index is 2 You should not swap the values just the last valid index along with the array is enough to decipher the non negative values.

  • Casting to generic type in Java doesn't raise ClassCastException?

    - by Kip
    I have come across a strange behavior of Java that seems like a bug. Is it? Casting an Object to a generic type (say, K) does not throw a ClassCastException even if the object is not an instance of K. Here is an example: import java.util.*; public final class Test { private static<K,V> void addToMap(Map<K,V> map, Object ... vals) { for(int i = 0; i < vals.length; i += 2) map.put((K)vals[i], (V)vals[i+1]); //Never throws ClassCastException! } public static void main(String[] args) { Map<String,Integer> m = new HashMap<String,Integer>(); addToMap(m, "hello", "world"); //No exception System.out.println(m.get("hello")); //Prints "world", which is NOT an Integer!! } }

  • Store html form on client or server while building?

    - by Brett
Hi, I have a fairly complex html form enhanced via jquery. It has multiple tabs, within each one things like a html form builder, uploads, descriptions. There is lots of data, and as the user flicks around the various tabs I'm thinking of posting the data to the server. For example, the form builder, has about 10 properties for each field, as the user flicks between the various fields, an ajax request saves the current values, then loads a new set from the new field clicked on. When the user hits save, the idea is then on the server all these bits and pieces come together and become the live version (i may store them as a temp version while the user is working away). So I guess my question is, for complex forms where the same fields are re-used within the one form, does anyone attempt to save all this data locally and upload it in one hit or do most of you do little ajax post's and compile it all when the final save button is hit? b

  • What's the best way to move "a child up" in a C# XmlDocument?

    - by Mike
Hi everyone, Given an xml structure like this: <garage> <car>Firebird</car> <car>Altima</car> <car>Prius</car> </garage> I want to "move" the Prius node "one level up" so it appears above the Altima node. Here's the final structure I want: <garage> <car>Firebird</car> <car>Prius</car> <car>Altima</car> </garage> So given the C# code: XmlNode priusNode = GetReferenceToPriusNode() What's the best way to cause the priusNode to "move up" one place in the garage's child list? Thanks! -Mike

  • Git error "fatal: 'my_blog_tmp' does not appear to be a git repository"

    - by Anthony
Hi, I'm very new to Git and I've been following this online tutorial for converting my existing SVN repository to a Git repository and am stuck at the final hurdle. http://www.jonmaddox.com/2008/03/05/cleanly-migrate-your-subversion-repository-to-a-git-repository/ On the last step of the tutorial it says to do this: git clone my_blog_tmp my_blog However, when I do, I get the following error: fatal: 'my_blog_tmp' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly Some points: 1) I'm entering the above command from within the "my_blog_tmp" directory 2) I've tried entering "git init" to make sure Git is initialised inside the "my_blog_tmp" folder but no joy. Please help! Thank you :)

  • I need an algorithm to find the best path

    - by user242635
I need an algorithm to find the best solution of a path finding problem. The problem can be stated as: At the starting point I can proceed along multiple different paths. At each step there are another multiple possible choices where to proceed. There are two operations possible at each step: A boundary condition that determine if a path is acceptable or not. A condition that determine if the path has reached the final destination and can be selected as the best one. At each step a number of paths can be eliminated, letting only the "good" paths to grow. I hope this sufficiently describes my problem, and also a possible brute force solution. My question is: is the brute force is the best/only solution to the problem, and I need some hint also about the best coding structure of the algorithm.

  • Cleaning strings in R: add punctuation w/o overwriting last character

    - by spearmint
I'm new to R and unable to find other threads with a similar issue. I'm cleaning data that requires punctuation at the end of each line. I am unable to add, say, a period without overwriting the final character of the line preceding the carriage return + line feed. Sample code: Data1 <- "%trn: dads sheep\r\n*MOT: hunn.\r\n%trn: yes.\r\n*MOT: ana mu\r\n%trn: where is it?" Data2 <- gsub("[^[:punct:]]\r\n\\*", ".\r\n\\*", Data1) The contents of Data2: [1] "%trn: dads shee.\r\n*MOT: hunn.\r\n%trn: yes.\r\n*MOT: ana mu\r\n%trn: where is it?" Notice the "p" of sheep was overwritten with the period. Any thoughts on how I could avoid this?

  • Progress Dialog in Android doesn't Show?

    - by Tyler
Okay.. I am doing something similar to the below: private void onCreate() { final ProgressDialog dialog = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait..", "Doing stuff..", true); Thread t = new Thread() { public void run() { //do some serious stuff... dialog.dismiss(); } }; t.start(); t.join(); stepTwo(); } However, what I am finding is that my progress dialog never even shows up. My App stalls for a moment so I know it is chugging along inside of thread t, but why doesnt my dialog appear? IF I remove the line: t.join(); Then what I find happens is that the progress dialog does show up, but my app starts stepTwo(); before what happens in the thread is complete.. Any ideas?

  • What emoticons can you put into class names in your language?

    - by Chris Gill
I've just had a "discussion" with a developer about naming classes in C#. My final throw away line was, "Let's not put any emoticons in our class names." I can't think of a way you could put emoticons in C# class names, but I haven't thought too hard about it. Is this possible? Does any programming language allow it? What would be the best/worst language to be able to perform this in? Update: The Scheme answer bests answers my question. It was a quick idea after a quick discussion so I'm going to accept after a short amount of time and then move on with my life. Thanks for the responses.

  • Guiding a Robot Through a Path

    - by Hamza Yerlikaya
I have a field filled with obstacles, I know where they are located, and I know the robot's position. Using a path-finding algorithm, I calculate a path for the robot to follow. Now my problem is, I am guiding the robot from grid to grid but this creates a not-so-smooth motion. I start at A, turn the nose to point B, move straight until I reach point B, rinse and repeat until the final point is reached. So my question is: What kind of techniques are used for navigating in such an environment so that I get a smooth motion? The robot has two wheels and two motors. I change the direction of the motor by turning the motors in reverse. EDIT: I can vary the speed of the motors basically the robot is an arduino plus ardumoto, I can supply values between 0-255 to the motors on either direction.

  • Asynchronous Processing in JBoss 6 ("Comet")

    - by chris_l
edit: Retagged as tomcat, since this is really a question about the Tomcat embedded inside JBoss 6, rather than JBoss itself I have an extremely simple servlet, which works on Glassfish v3. It uses Servlet 3.0 Asynchronous Processing. Here's a simplified version (which doesn't do much): @WebServlet(asyncSupported=true) public class SimpleServlet extends HttpServlet { @Override protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { final AsyncContext ac = request.startAsync(); ac.setTimeout(3000); } } On JBoss 6.0.0 (Milestone 2), I get the following Exception: java.lang.IllegalStateException: The servlet or filters that are being used by this request do not support async operation at org.apache.catalina.connector.Request.startAsync(Request.java:3096) at org.apache.catalina.connector.Request.startAsync(Request.java:3090) at org.apache.catalina.connector.RequestFacade.startAsync(RequestFacade.java:990) at playcomet.SimpleServlet.doGet(SimpleServlet.java:18) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:734) ... Do I have to do anything special to enable Asynchronous Processing in JBoss 6? Or do I need an additional deployment descriptor? ...

  • Equality Comparison with Multiple Instances/IEqualityComparer problems in LINQ

    - by Stacey
    This is similar to my last question; but from a different angle. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2792393/see-if-item-exists-once-in-enumerable-linq Given the following set of items, and lists containing them... Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item 4 Item 5 class Item { string Name { get; set; } } List<Item> available = new List<Item>() { Item 1 Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item 5 } List<Item> selected = new List<Item>() { Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 } I need to make a third List that has everything from "available", except what is in "selected". However 'Item 1' is in 'available' twice, but only in 'selected' once. Since they are instances of the same item, I am having trouble figuring out the appropriate logic to accomodate this. The final array should look like... List<Item> selectable = new List<Item>() { Item 1 Item5 }

  • How to properly update a feature branch from trunk?

    - by Pavel Radzivilovsky
SVN book says: ...Another way of thinking about this pattern is that your weekly sync of trunk to branch is analogous to running svn update in a working copy, while the final merge step is analogous to running svn commit from a working copy I find this approach very unpractical in large developments, for several reasons, mostly related to reintegration step. From SVN v1.5, merging is done rev-by-rev. Cherry-picking the areas to be merged would cause us to resolve the trunk-branch conflicts twice (one when merging trunk revisions to the FB, and once more when merging back). Repository size: trunk changes might be significant for a large code base, and copying the differences files (unlike SVN copy) from trunk elsewhere may be a significant overhead. Instead, we do what we call "re-branching". In this case, when a significant chunk of trunk changes is needed, a new feature branch is opened from current trunk, and the merge is always downward (Feature branches - trunk - stable branches). This does not go along SVN book guidelines and developers see it as extra pain. How do you handle this situation?

  • calender with multiple data sources at once??

    - by Sune
Im looking for a (free) solution to a bookingcalender. Among many candidates Ive found the Jquery Full Calender which has many cool features. One of the reason that I like this one is because it has "drag and drop" and resize, which I also need. But I also need to have the dayview where I the columms monday, tuesday, wedensday, thursday friday .... gets replaced with fx. Room1, Room2, Room3, Room4, Room5, Room6, Room7. Ive found some examples on: http://www.devexpress.com/Products/NET/Controls/ASP/Scheduler/resources.xml http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/scheduler/examples/resourceavailability/defaultcs.aspx which has the functionality im after. Ive read others who has raised the same quistion on: http://code.google.com/p/jquery-week-calendar/issues/detail?id=35 but with no final solution. Are there any out there who has or knows some good links for want Im looking for?

  • Does anyone know a better alternative to MS Excel's Solver?

    - by tundal45
My company has to crunch a lot of data and part of the process involves running the solver and plotting a graph through resulting data points. Obviously there is a lot of copy and paste involved and the whole process is shaky, error prone and all round cluster-fudge. I was wondering if there was an alternative to the solver that can be used so that even if we have to use excel to plot the final graph, there will be a lot less data that needs to be copied and pasted back and forth. It would be great especially if the tool could be easily integrated into a .NET application but I am open to suggestions that may require a little bit of code-fu to get this to work. Thanks!

  • Counting multiple entries in a MySQL database?

    - by Aaron
Hi all, I'm trying to count multiple entries in a MySQL database, I know how to use COUNT(), but the exact syntax I want to get the results I need eludes me. The problem: Table structure: ID, CODE, AUTHOR, COUNTRY, TIMESTAMP. Code, Author and Country overlap many times in the table. I am trying to discover if there is one simple query that can be ran to return (using WHERE clause on COUNTRY) the author field, the code field, and then a final field that counts the number of times the CODE was present in the query result. So, theoretically I could end up with an array like: array('author', 'code', 'codeAppearsNTimes'); Authors also have varying codes associated with them, so I don't want the results merged. I suppose the end result would be: 'This author is associated with this code this many times'. Is this possible with MySQL? Thanks in advance.
