• Vim: Fuzzy file search comparable to Sublime Text 2's?

  I've tried FuzzyFinder, Command-T, and Ctrl-P (which is my finder of choice right now), but none hold a candle to Sublime Text 2. For example, I want to type: Head.php and have it find, among others: app/code/core/Mage/Page/Block/Html/Head.php Currently in Ctrl-P, which has otherwise served me better than Command-T, searching for Head.php gives me these first: downloader/lib/Mage/Connect/Command/Config_Header.php app/code/local/Namespace/Modals/Helper/Reader.php app/code/core/Mage/XMLConnect/Helper/Ipad.php My file is nowhere to be found (and I've never opened any of the above files), so I have to type this instead: pagehtmlhead.php Is there any utility that does smarter scoring/matching?

  Somebody I know expressed irritation today regarding those of us who tend not to use spaces in our filenames, e.g. NamingThingsLikeThis.txt -- despite most modern operating systems supporting spaces in filenames. Are there technical reasons that it's still common to see file names without (appropriate) spaces? If so, what are these technical reasons that spaces in filenames are avoided or discouraged, and in what circumstances are they relevant? The most obvious reason I could think of, and why I typically avoid it, are the extra quotes required on the command line when dealing with such files. Are there any other significant technical reasons?

• What hash should be used to ensure file integrity?

  It's no secret that large files offered up for download often are coupled with their MD5 or SHA-1 hash so that after you download you can verify the file's integrity. Are these still the best algorithms to use for this? Obviously these are very popular hashes that potential downloaders would have easy access to. Ignoring that factor, what hashes have the best properties for being used for this? For example, bcrypt would be horrible for this. It's designed to be slow. That would suck to use on your 7.4 GB dual layer OS ISO you just downloaded when a 12 letter password might take up to a second with the right parameters.

• Is there some way Linux editors can tell the programming language without the file extension?

  I am editing some scripts on Linux without the languages file extensions, and it seems that the editors, namely vi, nano and gedit are not applying syntax highlighting because the filenames don't use the language extensions. Is there some parameters to be passed or some setting that can enable them to recognize the language? Update: After some googling I realize that bash has that ability, at least to do some parsing or check the shebang at the top determine the language. By default Ubuntu does not install the complete vim package, so after installing it, the shell files are recognized. I don't know about nano or gedit, but vi and its graphical counterpart will do.

• No file sharing between two server 2008 R2 machines.

  I have just replaced XP with Server 2008 R2 on my test sever, and have been running 2008 R2 on my dev laptop. When my server was still XP, file sharing just worked, but now it just doesn't. I've enabled everything I can about sharing, and I can ping the server by machine name, but if I try an access a share, I get asked for a password. The passowrd dialog assumes a domain for this user, but neither my laptop admin user nor my server admin user can get past this login. What am I doing wrong?

• How can I view and sort after the page count for multiple PDF files in a Windows file explorer?

  I unsuccessfully used the "pages" feature in Windows Explorer, as well as in Directory Opus 10 and Free Commander XT (which I installed just for that reason, to try it out) to display the page count of multiple PDFs in a folder. All my PDF's are free to edit, i.e. not write-protected. I don't understand why any PDF reader can display the (correct) page number, but none of the file explorers can? (In the "details" view of course.) The only documents whose page count is displayed are MS Word documents. Do I have to use Adobe Bridge? (I didn't try it.) On a side-note: Did that change in Windows 8? Initial research: Google search was unsuccessful, the only slightly related SE topic I found was "How to count pages in multiple PDF files?".

• How to send a direccion to the void using the Hosts file and without using 127.0.0.1?

  I have some name address that i want to send straight to the void using the HOSTS file but i don't want to use the 127.0.0.1. How can i do that?. Why?, I want to speed up some proccess but 127.0.0.1 is serving a webserver, so if i use 127.0.0.1 then this process will call my webserver, consuming resources and may be delaying the process.   I can open a cmd window and start a tail by entering something like this: tail -f C:\Oracle\WebCenter\Sites\11gR1\Sites\11.1.1.6.1\logs\sites.log This is probably a stupid question, but how do I do this in a batch file? It should be easy but it's not working - I have tried a couple variations and no success. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here?   I have several python modules that I've written. Randomly, I used file on this directory, and I was really surprised by what I saw. Here's the resulting count of what it thought the files were: 1 ASCII Java program text, with very long lines 1 a /bin/env python script text executable 1 a python script text executable 2 ASCII C++ program text 4 ASCII English text 18 ASCII Java program text That's strange! Any idea what's going on or why it seems to think python modules are very often java files? I'm using CentOS 5.2.

• How can I retrieve the details of the file from an outbound operation in BPEL 11g

  Several times, we come across requirements where we need to capture the details of the file that got written out as a part of a BPEL process invoking a File/Ftp Adapter. Consider a case where we're using FileNamingConvention as "PurchaseOrder_%SEQ%.txt" and we need to do some post processing based on the filename (please remember that we wouldn't know the filename until the adapter invocation completes) In order to achieve this, we need to manually tweak the WSDL so that the File/Ftp Adapter can return the metadata of the file that was written out. In general, the File/Ftp Write/Put WSDL operations are one way as shown below:         The File/Ftp Adapters are designed to return the metadata back if this WSDL is tweaked into a two-way WSDL. In addition, the <wsdl:output/> must import the fileread.xsd schema (see below). You will need to copy fileread.xsd from  here into the xsd folder of your composite.       Finally, we will need to tweak the  WSDL. (highlighted below)           Finally, the BPEL <invoke> would look as shown below. • TransformXml Task locks config file identified in Source attribute

  As background: the TransformXml MSBuild task is typically invoked in a custom build step to mark up a web.config file with per-environment configuration; its flexible directives offer highly granular control over the insertion, removal, substitution and transformation of existing configuration hierarchies. For those using the TransformXML task (typically in a Web Deployment Project) I raised an issue against Visual Studio 2010, in which the file handle on the input file was not released, meaning that following transformation the source file remained locked. As a result, the best way to transform a file was first to rename it, transform it, and then copy it back, leaving the "locked" file to be freed up later.I just heard today that this has now been resolved in Visual Studio 2012 RTM. That's good news, because Web Config Transformations offer a lot. An intelligent, automated build process will swap in the relevant transform(s), making it much easier to synthesise the Developer and Build server builds. This makes for a simpler and more exemplary build process, and with the tighter coupling comes a correspondingly quicker response to Developmental change.Oh, and don't forget -- it isn't just web.configs you can transform. You can transform app.configs, or indeed any XML file that honours the task's schema and hierarchical rules.

• Centralizing a resource file among multiple projects in one solution (C#/WPF)

  One of the challenges one faces when doing multi language support in WPF is when one has several projects in one solution (i.e. a business layer & ui layer) and you want multi language support. Typically each solution would have a resource file – meaning if you have 3 projects in a solution you will have 3 resource files.   For me this isn’t an ideal solution, as you normally want to send the resource files to a translator and the more resource files you have, the more fragmented the dictionary will be and the more complicated it will be for the translator. This can easily be overcome by creating a single project that just holds your translation resources and then exposing it to the other projects as a reference as explained in the following steps. Step 1 Step 1 -  Add a class library to your solution that will contain just the resource files. Your solution will now have an additional project as illustrated below. Step 2 Reference this project to the other projects. Step 3 Move all the resources from the other resource files to the translation projects resource file. Step 4 Set the translations projects resource files access modifier to public. Step 5 Reference all other projects to use the translation resource file instead of their local resource file. To do this in xaml you would need to expose the project as a namespace at the top of the xaml file… note that the example below is for a project called MaxCutLanguages – you need to put the correct project name in its place.   xmlns:MaxCutLanguages="clr-namespace:MaxCutLanguages;assembly=MaxCutLanguages"   And then in the actual xaml you need to replace any text with a reference to the resource file. <TextBlock Text="{x:Static MaxCutLanguages:Properties.Resources.HelloWorld}"/> End Result You can now delete all the resource files in the other projects as you now have one centralized resource file.

• MSBuild target _CopyWebApplication does not copy all necessary files to the bin folder

  Elsewhere on the Web, you can find recommendations on using something like this to simulate the Publish feature in the VS 2005-2008 IDE from a command-line (I hope I did not goof up the syntax!): msbuild /t:ResolveReferences;_CopyWebApplication /p:BuildingProject=true;OutDir=C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ blah.csproj Now, it looks like the .dll's copy fine. However, there are certain configuration files and template files that are copied to the bin folder which are needed for the app to work. For example, an NHibernate configuration file shows up in blah.csproj as: <None Include="blah.cfg.xml"> <CopyToOutputDirectory>PreserveNewest</CopyToOutputDirectory> </None> While using Publish from within the IDE copies this file as it should, the aforementioned _CopyWebApplication target does not. I need this file to be copied in the build script. Is this desired behavior for _CopyWebApplication? Any recommendations on how to fix this?

• Maven copy project output into other project resources

  There are two projects: 1) applet project that outputs jar file 2) web app project that should host the jar file. After (1) finished building, the applet jar file should be copied into the webapp folder of (2). The purpose is that (2) will host the applet (1) on the Internet. A lot of examples explain how to use another project as a library dependency. Other examples, show how to use ant plugin to copy files. I am unsure on how to properly set this up, so that 'mvn install' on the parent project will do the copying at the right time.

• c# Create a unique name with a GUID

  I am creating a back up solution. I doubt there is anything new in what I'm trying to achieve. Before copying the file I want to take a backup of the destination file in case anything becomes corrupt. This means renaming the file. I have to be careful when renaming in case the file already exists and adding a 01 to the end is not safe. My question is, based upon not finding the answer else where, would adding a GUID to the file name work. So, if my file was called file01.txt, renaming the file to file01.txtGUID (where GUID is the generated GUID), I could then perform my back up of that file (at this instance having 2 back ups) and then, after ensuring the file has copied (by comparing length of file to the source), delete the file with the GUID in the name. I know the GUID is not 100% guaranteed to be unique but would this suffice?

But when I used this on 'temporary internet files' folder in windows, am getting this error.   Hi: So I was editing a file on my local machine and I was ready to commit to the repository except that instead of running the svn commit, I ran svn update. Is there any way I can retrieve the changes that I had? I was working on a tex file in vim and I had closed the file before running svn update. Thanks. EDIT: I'm sorry - I completely was worried for nothing (project deadline in 30 mins and I thought I deleted all my changes). I realize that when I run svn update, it doesn't rewrite the local changes but tries to merge the files if there are no conflicts. Can someone tell me how to close or remove this post? Thanks.

• Software distribution from web server to client using PHP/FTP

  I develop and maintain a number of add-ons and utilities for various widget (mainly aMember) which generally means I need to install php based codes onto other people's systems. Whilst I have a VPS and have access to rsync and all sorts of yummy tools most of the people I deal with have a basic ftp access and that's all folks. To upload from my local system is also a problem as I am satellite based (two-way) so it is fairly slow and expensive and in any case the files are already on my server. So there is no rsync, fxp, ssh and I can't really install anything as it is obviously not my system, they would be justifiably miffed if I started installing file managers or other things onto their sites. What I have been trying to find is a utility that I can run on my server from the web, preferably php based, that will be like a file manager but a bit different. Two panels. LH-Side the local server .. pretty much like a standard FM application RH-Side ability to login via FTP to the clients system Then I can fiddle as required. The closest thing I have found is net2ftp but it doesn't have the gui interface, at the moment I simply ssh into my server power up ncftp and run that way, but something easier to use would be mucho niceness. For example: If I want to do a safe distribution of original music for demostration purposes I will need several requisites: 1) The music should be heard using a simple procedure like selecting the name of each song on a playlist of a mediaplayer. 2) The portable media, ussually a portable USB drive, must hide for complete and should make unaccesible the files that contain the audio data to anything but the mediaplayer, that must be in the first partition, the one that is visible. 3) Considering that´s impossible to really hide files in a non-hidden partition, a second hidden partition should be created in the USB drive and the audio data will be stored there. 4) The trick is to read the audio data files stored in the hidden partition with a mediaplayer stored in the visible partition, the media player also should be a complete standalone program and independent from any library of the operating system except of the OS audio system. 5) The hidden partition should have a copy protection scheme that could impede to do copies of the data or create working ISO images of it. I know that this description could not be technically accurate but it has a complete logic from the needs of a music producer against the problem of piracy. The philosophy that surrounds the concept is to transform a virtual object like a digital string of audio in a solid object like the analog vinyl discs are.

• Synchronizing files between Linux servers, through FTP

  I have the following configuration of servers: 1 central linux server, a VPS 8 satellite linux servers, "crappy shared hostings" I have a bunch of files that I need to have in all servers. Right now i'm copying them everywhere manually, but I want to be able to copy them to the central server, and then have a scheduled process that runs every now and then and synchronizes them (only outwardly, no need to try to find "new" files in the satellite servers). There are a couple of catches though: I can't have any custom software in the satellite servers, or do strange command line things that'll auto connect to them and send the files directly. I know this is the way these kinds of things are normally done, but the satellite servers are crappy shared hosting ones where I have absolutely no control over anything. I need to send the files over FTP I also need to have, in my central server, a list of the files that are available in each of the satellite servers, to make sure they are ready before I send traffic to them. If I were to do this manually, the steps would be: get the list of files in a satellite server compare to my own, and send the files that are missing get the list of files again, and store it in my central database. I'd like to know what tools are out there that can alleviate as much of this as possible, first the syncing, and then the "getting the list of files available in the other server". I'm going to be doing everything from PHP, not sure if there are good tools to "use FTP from PHP", which i'm pretty sure i'll have to do for step 3 at least. Thanks in advance for any ideas! Daniel

• Paste textbox from Powerpoint to Word as an editable control

  I have a Powerpoint 2007 file that contains a number of textboxes and shapes with text on them. I can edit, resize, change the text, etc. in these boxes in Powerpoint. However, if I select an item, copy it, and paste it into a Word 2007 document, I can't edit it. I can resize the entire thing, but it acts more like an image than a text box. I've tried the paste special options and keep source formatting options, but still can't edit it. Is there a way to be able to paste the editable content from Powerpoint and still have it editable in Word? Update I found this question that appears to get to the root of the problem: The MS Office Art graphics engine (aka Escher 2) is new to MS Office 2007 and while fully implemented in Excel and Powerpoint is only partially implemented in Word 2007 for backwards compatibility with the MS Office Drawing/Graphics engine (aka Escher) still available in Word It should work in earlier versions of Word and Word 2010, but not Word 2007. This is quite frustrating as I have to edit the slide in Powerpoint before copying it into Word. While doable, it adds another step, but the problem is that everyone who wants to update the Word document will have to do the same thing, adding complexity and steps for everyone. If I embed the Powerpoint slide in the document, I can edit the controls, but they don't scale the same way and takes a lot of work.

• Convert Excel File 'xls' to CSV, CAUTION: Bumps Ahead

  The task was to provide users with an interface where they can upload the 'csv' files, these files were to be processed and loaded to Database by a Console application. The code in Console application could not handle the 'xls' files so we thought, OK, lets convert 'xls' to 'csv' in the code, Seemed like fun. The idea was to convert it right after uploading within 'csv' file. As Microsoft does not recommend using the  Excel objects in ASP.NET, we decided to use the Jet engine to open xls. (Ace driver is used for xlsx) The code was pretty straight, can be found on following links: http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/yuanwang200409/102242008174401pm/1.aspx http://www.devasp.net/net/articles/display/141.html FIRST BUMP 'OleDbException (0x80004005): Unspecified error' ( Impersonation ): The ablove code ran fine in my test web site and test console application, but it gave an 'OleDbException (0x80004005): Unspecified error' in main web site, turns out imperonation was set to True and as soon as I changed it to False, it did work. on My XP box, web site was running under user                   'ASPNET'  with imperosnation set to FALSE                   'IUSR_*' i.e IIS guest user with impersonation set to TRUE The weired part was that both users had same rights on the folders I was saving files to and on Excel app in DCOM Config.  We decided to give it a try on Windows Server 2003 with web site set to windows authentication ( impersonation = true ) and yes it did work. SECOND BUMP 'External table not in correct format': I got this error with some files and it appeared that the file from client has some metadata issues  ( when I opened the file in Excel and try to save it ,excel  would give me this error saying File can not be saved in current format ) and the error was caused by that. Some people were able to reslove the error by using "Extended Properties=HTML Import;" in connection string. But it did not work for me. We decided to detour from here and use Excel object :( as we had no control on client setting the meta deta of Excel files. Before third bump there were a ouple of small thingies like 'Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005' Fix can be found at http://blog.crowe.co.nz/archive/2006/03/02/589.aspx THIRD BUMP ( Could not get rid of the EXCEL process  ):  I has all the code in place to 'Quiet' the excel, but, it just did not work. work around was done to Kill the process as we knew no other application on server was using EXCEL.  The normal steps to quite the excel application worked just fine in console application though.   FOURTH BUMP: Code worked with one file 1 on my machine and with the other file 2 code will break. and the same code will work perfectly fine with file 2 on some other machine . We moved it to QA  ( Windows Server 2003 )and worked with every file just perfect. But , then there was another problem: one user can upload it and second cant, permissions on folder and DCOM Conifg checked. Another Detour: Uplooad the xls as it is and convert in Console application.   Lesson Learnt:  If its 'xlsx' use 'ACE Driver' or read xml within excel as recommneded by MS.
