• Seeking advice on system documentation

  I have a rating engine (it is basically an algorithm) which when I started had no formal documentation. We have created a functional specification/decomposition which is our business level document but now I need something more technical (a technical specification). What I am struggling to understand is what that document looks like, what format it should be in and to what level of detail we should go into. We are in the process of commenting all of the code. We also have a rough document called a Blueprint which reflects the flow of the model and is written in pseudo code. Is the combination of this blueprint and the model comments sufficient as a Technical Specification?

• Ubuntu 12.10 - VirtualBox not sharing internet with guest system

  I went from ArchLinux to Ubuntu on my dev box. I use VirtualBox to test web sites on Windows and IE. I have my Windows 7 VirtualBox image running on Ubuntu's VirtualBox. Back with ArchLinux, internet worked "out of the box" on the Windows boxes. I left the default options on the box's Network Options (NAT). The Windows machine shows as "connected to ethernet" but reports: The dns server isn't responding So I can't access Internet from there. I tried searching for Ubuntu's official docs but they seem pretty outdated. I tried using my old boxes from Arch (which boot normally but have no internet) and creating a new box from Ubuntu itself, but still get the same results. Update: I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.18 from Ubuntu's repository (apt-get install virtualbox).

• Phonon - Audio Hardware Setup

  Does anyone know what configuration file is modified when I change settings within this area of the system settings? I keep choosing my Logitech USB Headset as the soundard, and, when I hit apply, it accepts that change and all is good. However, as soon as I close the system settings window, it loses the setting, so I have to leave it open all the time. How can I make this setting permanent? Thanks for any assistance. I'm actually running Kubuntu 11.10.

  I'm Quite new to this Ubuntu but recently started using it, 2 days back I had problem with muting the Laptop speaker when headphone jack is plugged, to resove this i searched and somehow tried with the Alsa mixer and got it perfect. • Very frequent system problems since 12.10 upgrade

  Since I recently upgrade my 12.04 install to 12.10, there is loads more instability generally. I have captured just the latest example - often occurring just after startup and login. Other random times, similar things happen - not always the same executable is reported - might be many different problems. Is everyone finding 12.10 a bit unstable (in which case I can hope for fixes to filter through over the coming months)?

• My system can't be updated

  After I installed some updates I restarted my computer. Some days later I wanted to check for updates because the update-manager shows me the following: "The packet information has been updated last 24 days ago." and a window appeared. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. But my Internet connection works fine. I downloaded and installed and run the banish404 software and it does not work. • Persistent (purely functional) Red-Black trees on disk performance

  I'm studying the best data structures to implement a simple open-source object temporal database, and currently I'm very fond of using Persistent Red-Black trees to do it. My main reasons for using persistent data structures is first of all to minimize the use of locks, so the database can be as parallel as possible. Also it will be easier to implement ACID transactions and even being able to abstract the database to work in parallel on a cluster of some kind. The great thing of this approach is that it makes possible implementing temporal databases almost for free. And this is something quite nice to have, specially for web and for data analysis (e.g. trends). All of this is very cool, but I'm a little suspicious about the overall performance of using a persistent data structure on disk. Even though there are some very fast disks available today, and all writes can be done asynchronously, so a response is always immediate, I don't want to build all application under a false premise, only to realize it isn't really a good way to do it. Here's my line of thought: - Since all writes are done asynchronously, and using a persistent data structure will enable not to invalidate the previous - and currently valid - structure, the write time isn't really a bottleneck. - There are some literature on structures like this that are exactly for disk usage. But it seems to me that these techniques will add more read overhead to achieve faster writes. But I think that exactly the opposite is preferable. Also many of these techniques really do end up with a multi-versioned trees, but they aren't strictly immutable, which is something very crucial to justify the persistent overhead. - I know there still will have to be some kind of locking when appending values to the database, and I also know there should be a good garbage collecting logic if not all versions are to be maintained (otherwise the file size will surely rise dramatically). Also a delta compression system could be thought about. - Of all search trees structures, I really think Red-Blacks are the most close to what I need, since they offer the least number of rotations. But there are some possible pitfalls along the way: - Asynchronous writes -could- affect applications that need the data in real time. But I don't think that is the case with web applications, most of the time. Also when real-time data is needed, another solutions could be devised, like a check-in/check-out system of specific data that will need to be worked on a more real-time manner. - Also they could lead to some commit conflicts, though I fail to think of a good example of when it could happen. Also commit conflicts can occur in normal RDBMS, if two threads are working with the same data, right? - The overhead of having an immutable interface like this will grow exponentially and everything is doomed to fail soon, so this all is a bad idea. • Five years old Ubuntu system - dist-upgrades always went fine, however some tasks remain

  I have a PC with a current Ubuntu distribution installed. I've upgraded many times since 5.10. It always went well, however some tools or features were kind of left behind in a unsatisfactory state: grub to grub2 - is it an really necessary to switch the boot loader some time to grub2. Upgrading this scares me abit. I still have ext3 devices - is it worth upgrading to ext4? should I wait for btrfs? hibernation and suspend- it only worked in 5.10, since 6.04 it was messed up. Should I really care? Any chance to repair this myself? Simply by cleanup or hacking config files. It is a desktop PC after all. So energy saving functionality is not really needed. I am using vmware workstation 6.5 and the latest kernel that supports it is 2.6.32. This is my default kernel now, ignoring 2.6.35. Am I missing anything important in the new kernel now?

• System resets to login screen spontaneously

  Now I'm experiencing spontaneous resets of the desktop environment (when logged in and working normally), where the screen will go black, then reset to the login screen. The resets appear to be random, though there is a chance it occurs more when using Nautilus. The screen goes black instantly, e.g. there is nothing like a disappearing launcher or window borders. Where can I begin finding the cause? (Note: I've recently upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10, then 12.04.)

• Looking for bug tracking software

  I'm looking for a bug/issue tracking system that can: Integrate with lots of other services. Basecamp, Beanstalk, etc. Integrate popular CMSs, such as WordPress, so the client can enter a ticket from the system that is familiar to them and not have one more login to worry about. Generate reports for my own purposes. Bonus if there's an iPhone app. Doesn't require additional development on my end (I have plenty of money and no time). I've already looked into Lighthouse and ZenDesk -- both are solid offerings -- but don't see what I need out of the box. I'd have to build CMS plug-ins. And I've looked through WP plug-ins for bug tracking software, but nothing I've found integrates with these products. Anyone know of something that meets these requirements without additional development, or am I stuck putting my business on hold to get this piece in place myself?

• Profiling and containing memory per system

  I have been interesting in profiling and keeping a managed memory pool for each subsystem, so I could get statistic on how much memory was being used in something such as sounds or graphics. However, what is the best design for doing this? I was thinking of using multiple allocators and just using one per subsystem, however, that would result in global variables for my allocators (or so it would seem to me). Another approach I have seen/been suggested is to just overload new and pass in an allocator for a parameter. I had a similar question over on stackoverflow here with a bounty, however, it seems as if perhaps I was too vague or just there is not enough people with knowledge in the subject.

• System hangs at glReadPixel call with GL_TEXTURE_2D_ARRAY for texturing

  I am calling glReadPixel after glDrawArray call. I am rendering a geometry with 3D texture on it as a target GL_TEXTURE_2D_ARRAY. My systems hangs at glreadpixel call. When i use target as GL_TEXTURE_3D the issue does not occurs and it correctly reads the framebuffer contents. glReadPixels(0, 0, GetViewportWidth(), GetViewportHeight(), GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, (GLvoid *)rendered_pixels); I am using SNORM textures with GL_byte data in glTeximage3D call and I am not calling glPixelStorei, is it because of this? What should be the parameter for pixelstore call?

• Mount file system path as encrypted?

  I know how to mount an encrypted ext4 partition. However, now I want to do the opposite. I want to mount a folder of an existing partition somewhere else in my filesystem, but when accessing it, files should get encrypted using AES256. Is that possible? Here an example: I have a folder containing some images 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg, etc. I want to mount this folder in another location so that the content of the images are encrypted. Filenames shouldn't change. Background: I want to synchronise my image folder to a cloud storage, but I want to encrypt the files before upload. The tools provided by the cloud provider don't support client side encryption. Therefore, I want to use the tools on a folder only containing encrypted data.

• Writing a dynamic achievement system without hardcoding rules into the application

  I really enjoyed the solution provided here for groundwork on writing an achievement framework. The problem I have is I have game designers that would like to be able to insert achievements into a CMS at runtime. In a way, it sounds insane and complex to do this, but is it really? I think the concept of having to do a hard push of the application for every new achievement is cumbersome. I would love to be able to give our designers the capability to put together new achievements by entering them into a database. It shouldn't matter what tool I'm using, but for those interested, my backend is being written in JRuby (Ruby on top of the JVM). • Unable to use certain Fonts programatically in ASP.Net

  I am trying to programatically create a bitmap with a specified font in ASP.Net. The idea is that the text, font name, size color etc. will be passed in from variables and a bitmap of the text using the font etc will be returned. • Aide On a Low Memory System

  I have a Linux server running on a Linode.com VPS, where I'm trying to utilize aide to detect any issues. However, the nightly aide run uses up all of my available memory and swap (512MB RAM / 384MB SWAP). I've tried adding a script to /etc/cron.daily that would stop/start services using a lot of memory (apache2, mysql) during the aide run. Unfortunately, it seems like aide continued to use every available byte (including the space freed up from apache2 and mysql). Here's a graph from munin showing what happens when aide runs: Note the spike of memory usage, well into swap, when aide runs Any suggestions on tuning aide to not use so much memory, or is there an alternative to aide that doesn't behave this way?

• How to re-enable tray icons for applications in ubuntu 13.10?

  Unfortunately in new Ubuntu 13.10 there is no Tray Icon and Whiteliting is removed. The older solutions are not works for me, e.g.: No such schema 'com.canonical.Unity.Panel' message answered when I try to use the gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']" comand. How can I get tray icons back (for applications that put icon in tray like Truecrypt, Pidgin, Aqualung, gnome-system-monitor, gyache, and so many more...) in Unity ? The most annoying is that the user loses control over applications can not detect itself that it has no tray icon... (e.g.: gnome-system-monitor, truecrypt...) At least Aqalung send a message about unable to put icon on systray! Thanks
