• Ubuntu server has slow performance

  I have a custom built Ubuntu 11.04 server with a 6 disk software RAID 10 primary drive. On it I'm primarily running a PostgreSQL and a few other utilities that stream data from the web. I often find after a few hours of uptime the server starts to lag with all kinds of processes. For example, it may take 10-15 seconds after log-in to get a shell prompt. It might take 5-10 seconds for top to come up. An ls might take a second or two. When I look at top there is almost no CPU usage. There's a fair amount of memory used by the PostgreSQL server but not enough to bleed into swap. I have no idea where to go from here, other than to suspect the RAID10 (I've only ever had software RAID 1's before). • Some help needed with setting up the PERFECT workflow for web development with 2-3 guys using subver

  Hey guys! I run a small web development company along side with my brother and friend. After doing extensive research I have decided on using subversion for version control. Here is how I currently plan on running typical development. Keep in mind there are 3 of us each in a separate location. I set up an account with springloops (springloops.com) subversion hosting. Each time I work on a new project, I create a repository for it. So lets say in this case I am working on site1. I want to have 3 versions of the site on the internet: Web Development - This is the server me and the other developers publish to. (site1.dev.bythepixel.com) Client Preview - This is the server that we update every few days with a good revision for the client to see. (site1.bythepixel.com) Live Site - The site I publish to when going live (site1.com) Each web development machine (at each location) will have a local copy of xamp running virtual host to allow multiple websites to be worked on. The root of the local copy is set up to be the same as the local copy of the subversion repository. This is set up so we can make small tweaks and preview them immediately. When some work has been done, a commit is made to the repository for the site. I will have the dev site automatically be pushed (its an option in springloops). Then, whenever I feel ready to push to the client site I will do so. Now, I have a few concerns with those work flow: I am using codeigniter currently, and in the config file I generally set the root of the site. Ex. http://www.site1.com. So, it looks like each time I publish to one of the internet servers, I will have to modify the config file? Is there any way to make it so certain files are set for each server? So when I hit publish to client preview it just uploads the config file for the client preview server. I don't want the live site , the client preview site and the dev site to share the same mysql server for a variety of reasons. So does this once again mean that I have to adjust the db server info each time I push to a different site? Does this workflow make sense? If you have any suggestion please let me know. I plan for this to be the work flow I use for the next few year. I just need to put a system in place that allows for future expansion! Thanks a bunch!!

• Comparing strings with user-created string class

  Basically, I created my own string class, mystring.h and mystring.c. What I want to do is write a function that compares two "strings" and then returns 1 first word is larger than the second, the opposite if word 2 is larger than word 1, and 0 if the two words are equal.   I am parsing the tabular information from the html file with the help of the html agility pack. Now I can do it and it works. But when the table what I want to extract is inner most. Or I don't know at which position it is in nested tables.And there can be any number of nested tables and from that I want to extract the information of the table which has column name name,address. • log4net not logging with a mixture of .net 1.1 and .net 3.5

  Hi All, I have an iis server on a windows 2003 production machine that will not log using log4net in the .net3.5 web application. Log4net works fine in the 1.1 apps using log4net version 1.2.9.0 and but not the 3.5 web app. The logging works fine in a development and staging environment but not in production. It does not error and I receive no events logged in the event viewer and don't know where to look next. I have tried both versions of log4net (1.2.9.0 and 1.2.10.0) and both work in development and staging but not in production. For testing purposes I have created just a single page application that just echos back the time when the page is hit and also is supposed to log to my logfile using log4net. • Slow performance when utilizing Interop.DSOFile to search files by Custom Document Property

  I am new to the world of VB.NET and have been tasked to put together a little program to search a directory of about 2000 Excel spreadsheets and put together a list to display based on the value of a Custom Document Property within that spreadsheet file. Given that I am far from a computer programmer by education or trade, this has been an adventure. I've gotten it to work, the results are fine. The problem is, it takes well over a minute to run. It is being run over a LAN connection. When I run it locally (using a 'test' directory of about 300 files) it executes in about 4 seconds. I'm not sure even what to expect as a reasonable execution speed, so I thought I would ask here. The code is below, if anyone thinks changes there might be of use in speeding things up.   I am writing a serial communication program using the SerialPort class in C# to interact with a strip machine connected via a RS232 cable. When i send the command to the machine it responds with some bytes depending on the command. Like when i send a "\D" command, i am expecting to download the machine program data of 180 bytes as a continous string. As per the machine's manual, it suggests as a best practice to send an unreognized characters like comma (,) character to make sure the machine is initialized before sending the first command in the cycle. • Jquery Cycle Plugin Question - turning off relative links to photos so it goes to a URL

  I am using Jquery Cycle Plugin and it has a side panel that highlights as the photos change and currently when I click on the text the associated photo pulls up then I have to click on the photo to go to the URL but I would like the text itself to link to the URL. I have looked at the fn.cycle.defaults but not sure what to change and I tried a few things but nothing works. If anyone can help me figure this out it would be most helpful. • How can I take the first 100 characters of html content ( without stripping the TAGS! )

  There are lots of questions on how to strip html tags, but not many on functions/methods to close them. Here's the situation. I have a 500 character Message summary ( which includes html tags ), but I only want the first 100 characters. Problem is if I truncate the message, it could be in the middle of an html tag... which messes up stuff. ( Although, ideally that would be the first approximately 100 characters of "CONTENT" ( in between the html tags ) I'm assuming the best way to do this would be a recursive algorithm that keeps track of the html tags and appends any tags that would be truncated, but that may not be the best approach. My first thoughts are using recursion to count nested tags, and when we reach 100 characters, look for the next "<" and then use recursion to write the closing html tags needed from there. The reason for doing this is to make a short summary of existing articles without requiring the user to go back and provide summaries for all the articles. I want to keep the html formatting, if possible. NOTE: Please ignore that the html isn't totally semantic. This is what I have to deal with from my WYSIWYG. EDIT: I added a potential solution ( that seems to work ) I figure others will run into this problem as well. I'm not sure it's the best... and it's probably not totally robust ( in fact, I know it isn't ), but I'd appreciate any feedback

For each claim they are assign a unique ID. like contractcompany/category/serialno Ex: take a contracted company names as xxx, sss, zzz. xxx/Engineering/001 sss/Engineering/001 . . . xxx/Enginnering/002 sss/Engineering/002 . . . xxx/Fire/001 sss/Fire/001 . . . xxx/Fire/002 . . . xxx/Fire/002 . . . and so on..... by this way they issue the unique ID for each claim. Finally what i want is developing the interface with PHP mysql and ajax auto generating the unique id for each claim. store full details of the claims with reference to unique id. show all claims in one page, and they can view by branch wise and category wise. send monthly Report (All claims they have given and status of claims) to contract companies. give access to contracted companies, but they can view only their respective claims. Each claim has its own documents. So they can be uploaded by own company users or administrator. these files are associated with unique ID. contracted companies can view files. Give access to branches to enter new claims and update old claims. Administrator can create, update and delete all the claims and their details. Only administrator can grant new users (own company branches / contracted companies) Finally the the panel is completely database driven. Could any body can help. The scenario is : in scroll window there are two fields Document types and type id: Document type is Dropdown list: As per document type selection type id look should display the values. For ex. If I select quote type from document type and if I open type id look up it should display only quotation in the look window. It should work for all the values of document type drop down list values. Its working fine. The item in the document types are: Quote, Order, Invoice, Return, BackOrder. The problem is after saving the data when I am displaying the same record in scroll window, suppose after displaying document type is QUOTE and document id is QTOARD, and in this position I am changing the document type from dropdown QUOTE to ORDER at this time warning message should c ome this range entered is in valid. Because in database table there is no document QTOARD for ORDER type. The same should work for all the condition. The table name is SOP_ID_Setp and key is SOP Type and DocumentID. • Defining where on the page the flowdocument I am printing will 'start' and 'end'

  Dear community. I am almost done with implementing a printing functionality, but I am having trouble getting the last hurdle done with. My problem is, that I am printing some reports, consisting of a header (with information about the person the report is about), a footer (with a page number) and the content in the middle, which is a FlowDocument. Since the flowdocuments can be fairly long, It is very possible that they will span multiple pages. My approach is to make a custom FlowDocumentPaginator which derives from DocumentPaginator. In there i define my header and my footer. However, when I print my page, the flowdocument and my header and footer are on top of eachother. • Passing Flash variables to PHP.

  Hi, I have a simple standalone application written in Visual Basic that I'm porting to a browser based application using PHP/javascript. The original VB application has some simple embedded flash games with token and point counters. The token and point values are being passed as variables between the application and the game. I'm trying to achieve the same effect in my PHP port without modifying the actionscript code( using the variables in actionscript that already exist). • Cannot populate form with ajax and populate jquery plugin

  I'm trying to populate a form with jquery's populate plugin, but using $.ajax The idea is to retrieve data from my database according to the id in the links (ex of link: get_result_edit.php?id=34), reformulate it to json, return it to my page and fill up the form up with the populate plugin. But somehow i cannot get it to work. Second is that even if i put a specific record to bring up, populate doesn't populate. Update: I changed the populate library with the one called "PHP jQuery helper functions" and the difference is that finally it says something. finally i get an error saying NO SUCH ELEMENT AS i wen into the library to have a look and up comes the following function function populateFormElement(form, name, value) { // check that the named element exists in the form var name = name; // handle non-php naming var element = form[name]; if(element == undefined) { debug('No such element as ' + name); return false; } // debug options if(options.debug) { _populate.elements.push(element); } } Now looking at it one can see that it should print out also the name, but its not printing it out. so i'm guessing that retrieving the name form the json is not working correctly. • Auto update the content in ASP.NET

  I have to design a website where user can update their status, just like facebook and twitter and other social networking sites. Now my requirement is to refresh the feed with new user updates. Ex: when the new status comes facebook automatically add that on the top of the feed. on the other hand twitter shows the number of updates which is ready to be load. both ways are acceptable to me Now, I have to decide what is the best way to achieve this functionality. I am open to use ASP.NET. So I am confused that regular repeater control with timer and auto refresh or any other way? (I am wondering that if I set repeater for auto update and meanwhile if user is performing some action on any status it will lost). or do I need to change my framework from ASP.NET to ASP.NET MVC (I am little afraid with MVC as I have very less knowledge regarding it and I know it has a learning curve to master ajax/Jquery things) Any suggestion how I can I achieve it in a better and feasible way? EDIT1 I am not looking for a code but I want advice to achieve this. Supporting URL's would be appreciated. EDIT2 I am open to JQuery which can regularly check the database and fill the section. But my concern is this that if user is updating any comment and want to load/feed is automatically generated. his textbox text shouldn't be disappear (just like facebook, twitter or Linkedin) EDIT3 I have seen that on Stack overflow when any other user has modified the question/answer, I got notification like this question/answer is modified. and when I clicked on that notification only that section got reloaded. I am curious to know how to achieve this functionality. So that when user is commenting on a status/post and if meanwhile someone has updated the content then it would show the other user comment. Edit4 Could someone please recommend me an example of ASP.NET MVC 3+ which can do similar kind of activity (i.e. one input box and once user insert an text it will add the item in the list (with JQuery).

• Possible uncommitted transactions causing "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired" erro

  My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read comments about increasing the timeout period but I've also read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application. I'll provide the code I'm working with and there is an IF statement in there that I was a little iffy about but it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I'll just go over what's going on here, there is a list of objects to update or add into the database. New objects created in the application are given an ID of 0 while existing objects have their own ID's generated from the DB. If the user chooses to delete some objects, their IDs are stored in a separate list of Integers. Once the user is ready to save their changes, the two lists are passed into this method. By use of the IF statement, objects with ID of 0 are added (using the Add stored procedure) and those objects with non-zero IDs are updated (using the Update stored procedure). After all this, a FOR loop goes through all the integers in the "removal" list and uses the Delete stored procedure to remove them. A transaction is used for all this. • Java object to XML Elements?

  I'm working on a webservices client app and I have it mostly working. I can retrieve and read data from the third-party webservice fine. Now I need to submit some data and I'm stuck. The classes for the objects I'm retrieving/submitting were generated from XSD files via the xjc tool. The part I'm stuck on is turning one of those objects into an XML tree to submit to the webservice. When I retrieve/send a request from/to the ws, it contains a 'payload' object. This is defined in java code as (partial listing): @XmlAccessorType(XmlAccessType.FIELD) @XmlType(name = "PayloadType", propOrder = { "compressed", "document", "any", "format" }) public class PayloadType { @XmlElement(name = "Compressed") protected String compressed; @XmlElement(name = "Document") protected List<String> document; @XmlAnyElement protected List<Element> any; protected String format; public List<Element> getAny() { if (any == null) { any = new ArrayList<Element>(); } return this.any; } } The only field I'm concerned with is the 'any' field which contains an XML tree. It has to be an Element. Do I do something with a JAXBContext marshaller? I've used that to dump the 'dData' object to the screen to check the XML structure. • SQL Server 2008 Filestream Impersonation Access Denied error

  I've been trying to upload a file to the database using SQL SERVER 2008 Filestream and Impersonation technique to save the file in the file system, but i keep getting Access Denied error; even though i've set the permissions for the impersonating user to the Filestream folder(C:\SQLFILESTREAM\Dev_DB). when i debugged the code, i found the server return a unc path(\Server_Name\MSSQLSERVER\v1\Dev_LMDB\dbo\FileData\File_Data\13C39AB1-8B91-4F5A-81A1-940B58504C17), which was not accessible through windows explorer. I've my web application hosted on local maching(Windows 7). SQL Server is located on a remote server(Windows Server 2008 R2). Sql authentication was used to call the stored procedure.
