• Good Linux Distro for Disconnected Netbook

  I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the Army and I have a friend who's netbook had his hard drive take a dump on him. He ordered a new hard drive and I was able to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu to disk from work. However the default install doesn't support most of the media that he wants to watch (AVI files, probably some DIVX video) without installing extra packages. We don't have internet in the tent and really don't have a vaiable option for downloading additional packages through the package manager anywhere here. The computer is a small HP netbook. All my friend wants is to watch ripped movies. Does anyone know of a good way to do either of the following: Download packages seperately and install them via CD A distro that is going to come preloaded with all of the packages and needed to watch just about any type of video file you can think of? • kernel: journal commit I/O error

  I am having some problems with a Dell 1950 server. I am installing RHEL 4.6 along with Oracle and some other software on here. I am randomly getting an error message saying "kernel: journal commit I/O error" on my ssh session and on the monitor I have hooked up to the server I see an error scrolling by that says "EXT3-fs error (device sda5) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted." It has happened several times but never at the same point during the install. Actually, this last time the system was up and running and I was just trying to import a database into oracle. This has happened on several hard drives, so I'm pretty sure that is not the problem. This makes me think the raid controller is going bad. What do you guys think? ** UPDATE ** Pretty sure it was a bad hard drive. I threw another drive in the server and it's been running for about 48 hours with out problems.

• MediaShield RAID 5 is showing up as 760GB when the actual size is 2.7TB

  I just finished setting up Windows 2003 Server on my new server. And I started setting up a RAID 5 for it. I have 4x1TB Hard Drives. From MediaSheild RAID Utility (at boot time) the RAID size is displayed as 2.7TB. Linux also shows it as 2.7TB. However, in Windows, everything (including Windows Disk Management as well as Windows based MediaShield utility) is reporting only 760Gb. I already tried converting partitioning table to GUID from MBR, because I read somewhere that Windows can only handle up to 2TB MBR tables, that didn't help much. Tried searching for partitioning utilities that I could use, but couldn't find anything free. Formatted the disk as NTFS partition from within Linux, it stop showing in Windows all together, even MediaShield windows utility isn't showing at anymore. Windows is installed on a separate 500Gb hard drive, that's setup not to support RAID. Any ideas?

• RHEL5: Can't create sparse file bigger than 256GB in tmpfs

  /var/log/lastlog gets written to when you log in. The size of this file is based off of the largest UID in the system. The larger the maximum UID, the larger this file is. Thankfully it's a sparse file so the size on disk is much smaller than the size ls reports (ls -s reports the size on disk). On our system we're authenticating against an Active Directory server, and the UIDs users are assigned end up being really, really large. Like, say, UID 900,000,000 for the first AD user, 900,000,001 for the second, etc. That's strange but should be okay. It results in /var/log/lastlog being huuuuuge, though--once an AD user logs in lastlog shows up as 280GB. Its real size is still small, thankfully. This works fine when /var/log/lastlog is stored on the hard drive on an ext3 filesystem. It breaks, however, if lastlog is stored in a tmpfs filesystem. Then it appears that the max file size for any file on the tmpfs is 256GB, so the sessreg program errors out trying to write to lastlog. Where is this 256GB limit coming from, and how can I increase it? As a simple test for creating large sparse files I've been doing: dd if=/dev/zero of=sparse-file bs=1 count=1 seek=300GB I've tried Googling for "tmpfs max file size", "256GB filesystem limit", "linux max file size", things like that. I haven't been able to find much. The only mention of 256GB I can find is that ext3 filesystems with 2KB blocks are limited to 256GB files. But our hard drives are formatted with 4K blocks so that doesn't seem to be it--not to mention this is happening in a tmpfs mounted ON TOP of the hard drive so the ext3 partition shouldn't be a factor. This is all happening on a 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 system. Interestingly, on my personal development machine, which is a 32-bit Fedora Core 6 box, I can create 300GB+ files in tmpfs filesystems no problem. On the RHEL5.4 systems it is no go.

• Windows Photo Viewer needs more ram?

  Ok, so i went to open a picture with the Windows Photo Viewer (Default) application and it told me this: Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs that you aren't using or free some hard disk space (if it's almost full), and then try again. So looking at my 98% ram usage (thankyou VisualStudio x8 + SQL Server) I rebooted my computer. Now this is my load: And this is my hard-disk loadout: So now I go to load up that image again. SAME MESSAGE, what the heck? So apparantly 6gb isn't enough ram to open a 29k image that loads perfectly fine in MSPaint, Paint.NET, Photoshop It's a .png and it's not corrupt. So my question is: what gives?

• Windows 2012 Server Hyper-V: Cannot see LAN

  I have one NIC on the machine loaded XP on the Hyper-V and had chosen the network as virtual switch. No LAN and no internet shows up on the client. Am I missing something? it used to work in 2008-R2. Details: One network card on machine (Qualcomm Atheros AR8131 PIC-E Gigabit Ethernet controller) The virtual machine hard disk is pointing to and existing XP-SP2 hard disk created using VPC 2007 The Virtual machine Network Adapter is setup as Virtual Switch to the real ethernet controller with Enable virtual LAN identification set to 2 (no other virtual machine is created in the system) After the virtual machine boots LAN shows empty in Control Panel Network Connections (this is XP client) and I also cannot access the internet. XP is showing activation prompt but as far as I know it should not disable the network! Virtual network switch is set to External

• Device Manager - does USB listing look right?

  I obtained the drivers from the manufacturer for my HT-Link NEC USB 2.0 2-port Cardbus card. When I plugged in the card before I got the drivers, 3 new entries showed up in the Device Manager - two "NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller" and one "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller." With the card plugged in, I uninstalled those two drivers. I then removed the card. I copied the new drivers to c:\windows\system32\drivers and the .inf file to c:\windows\inf. I also copied the drivers & inf to a new directory called c:\windows\drivers\ousb2. I reinserted the card. Windows automatically installed the same drivers as before. I selected 'update driver' on the "NEC PCI to USB..." entry and didn't see any other options. I then selected 'have disk' and pointed to c:\windows\drivers\ousb2 and got a message "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." I then selected 'update driver' on the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB...," and manually selected "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Windows then automatically found a USB root hub, and I manually selected "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Now there are two sections in the Device Manager titled "Universal Serial Bus controllers." I plugged in my external USB hard disk adapter, and "USB Mass Storage Device" was added to the first set. Here's how it looks (w/drivers from the properties): [Universal Serial Bus controllers] Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD (6/1/2002 5.1.2600.0) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) USB Mass Storage Device USB Root Hub (7/1/2001 5.1.2600.5512) (5 more USB Root Hubs - same driver) [Universal Serial Bus controllers] USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1) USB 2.0 Root Hub Device (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1) When I unplug the card the two "NEC PCI to USB..." entries in the first set disappear, and the whole second set disappears. (I unplugged the hard disk adapter first...) The hard disk adapter still doesn't work in that Cardbus card with the new drivers. I don't think the above looks right - a second set of USB controllers listed in the Device Manager, and the NEC entries still in the first set, and the the USB mass storage device still in the first set. Any help appreciated. (Windows XP PRO SP3 w/all current updates.)

• DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

  Hello, I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD. • Installing Windows 7 on a BSOD Windows Vista (ASAP)

  On a previous question i posted, i asked for help on fixing my windows vista box because it keeps going to blue screen. No one seems to have the answer, so now i want to install Windows 7. I want to know if i can install 7 without having to reformat my hard drive and having to lose all my files. I've already confirmed the hardware is working because i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my external hard drive and it runs on my system fine. • How to build a NAS?

  Hi all, I have quite a bit of photos I'd like to organize and get away from sparse DVDs and move to a NAS solution. Ideally, this would let me have some level of redundancy and more easily find what I'm looking for. That being said, hard drives are relatively cheap. My next question is, I would like to run ZFS on the drives with the ability to add / remove drives for additional redundancy, or change the configuration of the drives possibly. Is there a NAS box that let's you run your OS of choice (FreeNAS) so all I'd need to do is get the hard drives, the NAS box, and modify the firmware / OS with FreeNAS? Walter

• P2V using Acronis True Image Home 10 and Windows 7

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

  We have on the company I work for an application built in Delphi V with Crystal Reports 8. We all know that Crystal & Delphi can be temperamental sometimes and the worst thing is, nearly no detail on the error. Also there is a big lack of documentation on the web about this. There's lot of people with similar issue but no solution. The error I'm talking about in particular is the one on the image below. This happens when trying to print any Crystal Reports on screen. This has happened sometimes in the clients computer and it was hard for us to replicate on our environment. Since it's an old version of Crystal it is very hard to find any helpful documentation to know the exact source of the problem.

• Using 2-port LSI 2308-8e card to control 24 SAS HDDs

  I would like to rely on a RAID-on-chip solution to control 24 SAS hard drives in a direct-attached environment. How would you approach this to get best bandwidth given that I'd like to spend less than $10,000 on the interconnect. I've read that LSI 2308 chip can easily handle 8-drive SSD RAID6 in hardware. I'd like to harness its power to control 24 SAS hard drives over an expander in an external enclosure. Currently I use an Infortrend S24S-G2240 external enclosure. It provides its own controller and expander. I'd like to use LSI 2308 controller for RAID6 somehow instead of the mystery controller in the enclosure. P.S. I tried to create SAS-expander as a tag, but my rep on this site is low.

• What solutions do I have to enforce memory limit on PHP server?

  I would like to enforce memory limit on a folder basis (and have it applied on subfolders) but I don't want the user able to change the memory limit. I know I can disable ini_set and I know I can enforce a hard limit or deny ini_set with Suhosin. With the first one, I doubt it will block changing it from the user.ini file, for the second, the user may still be able to change it to the hard limit I enforce with Suhosin. In both cases, I would prefer to not entierly block ini_set because it may have a legit use for other settings. In case it is important, I'm using PHP version 5.4.4 with nginx (PHP in FPM mode)

• g++ in Knoppix 6 LiveCD

  To avoid the inevitable, let me put this in context. I am instructing an Intro to Unix course this semester and the students are using Knoppix 6.4.3 off the LiveCD. They are not required to install the system to their hard drive, and I would like to not require them to, however they do have use of a USB flash drive. This version of Knoppix seems to include gcc, but NOT g++. The course curriculum requires compiling C++ programs. I know I can run: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install build-essential to install (among other things) g++, but of course this only makes sense on a system installed to a hard drive. So my question is, can I write a script that calls gcc with appropriate options and flags to compile a C++ program that students could use in place of g++?

• laptop overheating ran defraggler and now its not as hot

  Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My setup is as follows: Intel core i5 750 quad core 2.66mhz 4GB ram asus p55 motherboard radeon hd 5570 video card 650gb 7200rpm western digital sata HDD 23" Nec ea23wmi monitor Operating System: Windows 7 What might be the main bottleneck that needs upgrading to fix my delays? Seems like the hard drive might be the problem but anything faster than 7200rpm is beyond my budget for a decent hard drive. Could it be anything else?

• Is there a maximum of open files per process in Linux?

  My question is pretty simple and is actually stated in the title. One of my applications throws errors regarding "too many open files" at me, even tho the limit for the user the application runs with is higher than the default of 1024 (lsof -u $USER reports 3000 open fds). Because I cannot imagine why this happens, I guess there might be a maximum per process. Any idea is very appreciated! • Switching to open folders on a Mac

  How do I easily switch to an open folder on a Mac? In Windows, which I'm used to using, I can see all my opened folders in my vertical taskbar, all I need to do to switch to another window is click on the folder in the task bar. There's no taskbar on a Mac, and when I have a lot of folders opened, ie. lots of Finder windows, how can I switch between them? The way I'm doing it is, I put expose on an active corner and switch that way. However that's still damn hard, because first I have to bring up expose, and then find my window. The folders are placed in a random position between opened apps, the folders are not in a list, and on a big screen I have to scan the whole screen in order to find the one I want... etc. Is it really this hard just to switch to a different folder on a Mac? Is there a taskbar solution on a Mac?

• How safe is locking the screen?

  So, both windows and linux have a pretty useful feature that allows you to leave everything running on the PC while also keeping invaders away by locking the screen. My question is: Say I leave my laptop with the screen locked while I go get a donnut, and then it gets stolen. Assuming the thief has access to whatever software he needs, how easy/hard would it be for him to access my (currently logged-in) account? Now let me be clear. I'm not asking if he can access the data on the harddrive. I know he can, and that issue would go under data encryption, which is not my question here. I'm focusing on how hard would it be to get around the "Insert Password" screen, and have full access to my account. I'm looking for answers regarding both OS's; but, if needed, assume Ubuntu. • Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

  Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

• Using search and replace to remove line breaks in Open Office

  Hi, I've imported a document into Open Office and it has a number of hard returns in wrong places. In MS Word, I could use the search and replace to simply get rid of them all easily, but Open Office's earch won't find them. I tried /n with the 'use regular expressions' box checked, but it seems that only looks for 'shift-enter' breaks and not ordinary hard returns. Is there another way to remove them all quickly, or do I have to go manually through the document and remove each one individually. This is a surprising oversight for Open Office.
