  • Which filename encoding should I use to be compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux.

    I'm using a Linux server as fileshare. These files are accessed by Windows computers with a Samba server, accessed by Macs with a netatalk server (afpd) and also trough ssh an sftp for Windows, Macs and Linux system. It seems like some of these systems care about the use of characters in filenames and some don't.. There is a tool called 'convmv' to convert filenames from one to another, but which one should I use? Should I setup the Samba server for a defined file encoding? Same for netatalk?

    When I try it I get: ImportError: dlopen(/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/lib/python2.5/site-packages/cscalelib.so, 2): Symbol not found: _glBindFramebufferEXT Referenced from: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/lib/python2.5/site-packages/cscalelib.so Expected in: dynamic lookup I've tried all sort of things in the setup.py file. What do I actually need to put in it to link to OpenGL properly? My code compiles fine so there's no point putting that on there.

  • Can I access the Cocoa Accessibility API from with Java on OSX?

    I need to write an app which can observe and manipulate the positions of windows on screen, and I've been told that this requires using Cocoa's Accessibility API. Unfortunately I'm a Java programmer, and Objective C scares me ;) Is it possible to access this Cocoa API from within Java? I know that back when Apple cared about Java it maintained a "bridge" to cocoa, but I'm not sure if this does what I need. Oh, and my IDE is Eclipse, in case that is relevant.

  • Mac & Photoshop: Screen capture of an application then pasting it into a new document in photoshop i

    This used to work perfectly up until about a month or two ago. When doing a screen capture onto the clipboard (cmd + ctr + shift + 4) and pasting it into a new document in Photoshop (only in photoshop, pasting it elsewhere like mail works fine), the drop shadow around the application doesn't look right.   • Workaround for JFormattedTextField delete bug in Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2 (1.6.0_20)

    There is apparently a bug introduced in the latest Java update for Mac OS X, which causes deletes in JFormattedTextFields to be performed twice. See http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2010/May/msg00092.html The DefaultEditorKit.deletePrevCharAction is invoked twice when the delete key is pressed. Are there any suggestions for a workaround? I'm thinking of replacing the delete action for my text fields with a patched version that somehow filters out these duplicate invocations.

  • Mapping capslock to control on Mac OS X: works for some things, but not others?

    I've mapped my capslock key to control using the Modifier Keys mapping in System Preferences: Keyboard. I've also tried mapping to "right control" instead of "left control" as per http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20060825072451882 using a plist editor. The mapping seems to work in all cases except one: I can't use capslock with left-shift to make key mappings or apparently do anything else. capslock (as control) with right-shift works. I'm primarily testing by using control-tab / control-shift-tab to switch between tabs. Using the on-screen-keyboard viewer, I can get capslock-shift-(just about anything) to work, but not capslock-leftshift-tab. My best guess is that somehow the particular keyboard I'm working on is faulty, but I'm curious whether anyone else can reproduce this or has any ideas.

    I get the impression that Carbon Human Interface Toolbox does not work in 64-bit binaries. Apple's documentation says: The Carbon Help Manager is not available to 64-bit applications. ... The Control Manager is not available to 64-bit applications. ... The Data Browser is not available to 64-bit applications. ... I just want to verify that: There is no work-around around this. If this is simply the case. Why don't Apple's documentation simply state it as such?

  • How do I reset the $PATH variable on Mac OS X?

    I've messed up my path variable, and now some apps that I run raise errors saying Command Not Found (error 127) for commands like 'date' and 'sleep'. These commands work fine when executed directly in the shell. I'm guessing this has something to do with a malformed $PATH variable, and need to know how to reset it. I've deleted the files ~/.bashrc , ~/.bash_profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, and ~/.bashrc and ~/.profile. What other files could hold my $PATH? Is there some simpler way to reset the Path than dig into the myriad files which could hold my path? Note, this path problem is only with my user. I made a test user on my system, and the path was fine, back to normal.

  • Is the method addSubview of NSView inherently slow? (Cocoa OSX)

    I am trying to speed my gui that loads very slow slow when I am loading a large project (the gui is a representation of groups and sub groups and is made up of many views). During this process I was looking at how long certain code segments take to execute and I have found that a call to addsubview is taking between 10 and 20 milliseconds most of the time. The subview I was looking at is a disclosure button. I am wondering if this method is just inherently slow or is their some other factor at work here? Is the time it takes to add the subview dependent on the complexity of the subview or is that not a factor? Also, is there some other method that can be used to add a subview that might be faster?

  • Why is my Mac not displaying anything to my LCD tv using HDMI?

    Hi folks, I've got an iMac desktop computer. Love it. I wish to connect it to my LCD TV using HDMI. There is no HDMI output on the iMac so i had to buy one of these bad boys :- so now I can output video (via the mini Display Port) and sound (via USB) through this box, to my LCD. Works great ... with a single direct cable. I have another 3 or 5 metre cable inserted into my wall, so i do not have to have a silly hdmi cable floating in the air between my iMac and my LCD TV. When I do this, there is no picture. To better explain all of this, i made a quick video explaining my problem in detail, so you can exactly see what is going on/wrong. I've also tried changing the output format for the TV from 1080i down to 720p and even lower .. incase the cable in the wall doesn't allow 1080i. here's the video with the full explanation :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkKRKnRIh6Q (NOTE: I incorrectly said in the video that the hidden wall cable is 10 metres long. me == fail.     Trying to join a osx machine on a dhcp network which forces certain client IDs. Even if I was to modify the client-id via the network properties, the DHCP server is not accepting this request, since Windows and Apple send this via different options You can set the ClassID in the Network Control Panel in the DHCP Client ID box. The trick lies in setting up your DHCP server to recognize it. Windows XP sends the DHCP class ID via DHCP option 77, and OS X sends it via option 61. You'll have to set your DHCP server to check for option 61, +with an offset of 1 and a length of 9+. That's the tricky bit. So, without modifying the DHCP server... (which does not belong to me), is there anything that can be done on OSX to modify the client-id option to be 77?
