• JavaScript settings are on but I still have issues with web sites using JavaScript.

  I have two computers that are the same at home except I have installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended on my main computer along with the 2010 Outlook (Beta). I have issues when I log into a website that uses pop up calendars to select the date. I pasted it below. I checked my other computer and it is fine. I've checked the Java setting and they are correct. I am at a loss. Any suggestions? • Why am I getting programs stuck in log_wait_commit under Linux?

  There is something subtly wrong with my Linux install that I just can't locate. It is Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) 64-bit. Hardware is a Dell Optiplex 960: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, 8Gb of RAM, 2x 300Gb HDDs. /home is ext2 on one disk and everything else is on the other (/ is also ext3). I have VirtualBox running a 64-bit Vista image for Outlook calendaring, but the heavyweight apps are IntelliJ, NetBeans, MySQL and Opera. Opera also loads my mail (IMAP) of which there is over 10,000 messages. The problem is that Opera stalls for a few seconds from time-to-time. Watching the process list shows it's in log_wait_commit which means (as far as I have figured out) the filesystem is holding things up. Sometimes I can make this happen by doing a subversion update, but usually it happens for no reason I can see. It usually happens to Opera, but I've seen NetBeans go under, too. It doesn't make the app crash - it's just completely unresponsive for a few seconds. Googling has not helped. The closest I got was to remove the sync attribute in the file system. This achieved nothing. On the advice of a Linux guru friend, I lowered /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs to 300, but that didn't do anything, either. And it was all he could think of. What is going on and can I fix it? (And how?)

• troubleshooting postifx -> exchange connection issues

  I have three linux-based mail routers that run postfix and relay mail to our on-premise exchange server as well as to outlook.com, splitting the mail based on ldap atttributes. What I've observed sporadically since upgrading this spring from Exchange 2007 to 2010 is that all three of the mail relays will, for about 20 minutes, fail to connect to exchange. Postfix logs it as "lost connection with exchange.contosso.edu" ; this problem almost always occurs to all three mail relays at the same time, and lasts for slightly under 20 minutes. If I can catch it while it's occuring, and I manually do "telnet exchange.contosso.edu 25" from one mail relay and force a message through (helo, mail from, rcpt to, data, etc), then it clears that relay up. The exchange "server" is actually two machines with the HT role on them, load balanced via windows NLB. I've worked pretty hard to figure out what's happening from the postfix side and I can't see any evidence of any misbehavior. My question is, how do I attack the problem from the exchange side? Is there a connection log, or a debug setting, or something I can do to log all of the inbound connections and tell me what's causing exchange to drop them?

• User Group Policy in Server 2008 to set Default Profile settings

  I have computers to deploy and want to apply changes to the default user policy on these PCs automatically. What's the best way to do this? Our current procedure is: Create the computer account in an OU called "Deployment" on our server Unbox the PC Login as the user who will be receiving the PC Change settings (pre-configure outlook, authorize Office, etc.) move computer account to correct OU Place the PC on the users desk. I would like to make as many of the changes in step #4 with Group Policies applied to the Deployment OU if possible since they're largely repeated for every computer. There are a dozen policies created and the computer ones apply correctly but the user policies do not. I understand this is because the end user is not in our "Deployment" OU. I don't want to apply these settings to the user at their current station just the new PC I'm working on. I believe I have the desired effect with Group Policy Loopback Replace enabled on policies that need user policies changed but this just feels wrong/inefficient/complicated to maintain. Am I doing this correctly? Is Group Policy Loopback the only way to change user accounts on one computer? What do you do to setup a user on a new PC?

• (Some) security perms in WinXP corrupted (shows GUID instead of username)

  I've been using my Win XP machine (part of a domain) over the holiday period, so until yesterday it hadn't rebooted for about five days. I used it yesterday perfectly fine and shut it down. When I switched it on this morning the majority (but not all) of my shortcut links in the Quick Launch toolbar showed as generic file icons. If you open the folder and get properties on one of the failing shortcuts it says ''Target type: This is not a valid shortcut''. Then in Outlook I noticed my signature wasn't showing (I checked my sent folder and the sig was ok yesterday). Checking the signature folder, I can't see the security tab on any of the sig files, and I have an access denied message on trying to open them. I can see the security tab on the signature folder itself, just none of the contents. If I try and use the parent folder's security tab and ''Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects'' it appears to work fine, but makes no actual difference. I logged in as administrator and saw that the owner of the files showed up as a GUID (clearly should've been my account in its place). Any ideas what might have made that happen? So far I haven't heard any similar complaints from anyone else at the office...

• Accessing or Resetting Permissions of a Mounted Registry Hive of a Different User / From a Different System

  I’m currently stuck using my backup system until I can replace my dead motherboard. In the meantime, I have put my hard-drive in this system so that I can access my files and keep working on the backup system. Fortunately, I don’t have a permission issues with the files (the partitions are FAT32). The issue I’m having is with the registry. I need to import some of my settings from the hives of my (old? normal?) installation of Windows into the one I’m currently using. Settings from the system hives (SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, etc.) are fine, but the user hive is giving me trouble. I’ve copied the NTUSER.DAT file from my other drive and mounted it with the reg command. Most of the keys (eg Software) are fine and I can access them without problem, but some of them (particularly the Identities key where Outlook Express settings are stored) complains that it cannot be opened. If I open the permissions dialog, I get an error about being unable to view the current permssions. If I then ignore it and try to take ownership of the key and it’s subkeys, I get an access-denied error. If I then add permissions for my user account on this system, I get an error, however I am then able to see the subkeys and values of the key. If I then try to access the subkeys, I get the same original errors. If I repeat the process for each subkey, I can see their values and subkeys, and so on, but of course this gets to be incredibly annoying and time-consuming (especially since the Identities key has a lot of subkeys). Is there an easier/temporary/more correct way to dump a key so that I can import it into my backup system?

  I have some newb questions I want answering please about cloud hosting - we are currently looking at Rackspace and getting a windows box. This is the situation: We have 15 computers in our office. We have 3 printers, some wifi and some network plugged. We have a standard router and the office share things via dropbox. The computers are not on Windows SBS or something similar. We want a cloud hosting solution that will offer User can login on any machine in the office and see the machine software User can login on any machine in the office and open Outlook and their emails and signature will be on exchange automatically A shared company folder on the network All printers automatically installed on the network Users can login remotely to access emails via the web At the moment we have a network company saying we need Xeon server in house with backup and psu and Windows SBS with license for each machine and also we need cabinets and cabling setup and also load balancers and modification of our DNS for emails. My question is this. Can cloud offer this? Can we have a server in the cloud that does this? Is it possible I mean the computers would be wireless connected to this cloud and you turn the machine on and its hosted?

• Debugging methods for Windows XP hangups

  I experience occasional 'freezes' on my desktop machine (Windows XP SP3). I've tried the normal debugging methods I know (watching Process Explorer, running ProcMon (hard to get a good trace because the hangups are so intermittent). Are there any additional system debugging methods that might be useful in discovering what would cause these hang ups? While this question is more about debugging methods than the actual issue itself (which is probably more of a superuser question), the symptoms of the hangup are: All windows become non-responding. Can be brought the foreground, but do not repaint. Taskbar/explorer windows are non-responsive Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Win+L, do not do anything (though the actions are queued up, and when the system unhangs, they are performed) Oddly enough, usually I can still scroll through the current page I have open in Google Chrome, but I cannot change tabs. Hangup can happen when I have tons of apps open, but also when I only have Outlook, Chrome, and MS Communicator (plus all the corporate spyware). Usually the hang lasts between 30sec and 3 minutes or so. After which I can continue working as usual.

• Convert Public Folder to Shared Mailbox

  Due to a change in company policy, all existing Public Folders (PF) have to be phased out in favour of shared mailboxes. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any procedures or guidelines for this migration and I can't find much online either. I've already migrated one of our public folders so far as a sort of test case. Because we still use Exchange 2003, we can't create real shared mailboxes as we would in 2007 or 2010 (With New-Mailbox -Shared ... in the Exchange Shell). Instead, I simply created a new account on the AD and assigned it a mailbox. I then set the PF's permissions to read-only to keep it in a consistent state and copied the entire folder to a local PST in Outlook 2010, from which the folder was in turn copied to the new mailbox. Permissions and Folder Visible were set for all users and the migration was successful. While this works, the whole procedure feels very hackish to me and not at all efficient. I'd welcome some input on automating or at least streamlining the process. Additionally, we are unsure of what to do with our mail-enabled Public Folders. Several of these are nested under other PFs, some of which are also mail-enabled. Preserving folder structure is a key requirement and this seems impossible at first glance. I've considered creating dummy accounts for all the email addresses from our mail-enabled PFs and then setting up automated rules to forward messages to a subfolder of the new shared mailboxes, but I am not familiar enough with Exchange to know if this is even possible. Further points of concern are the Calendars and Contact lists in our public folders. I suppose I'll be forced to create new mailboxes for every one of these we have as well, then set up share permissions for their Calendar and Contact items, but would be happy to be proven wrong.

• SSO to multiple websites from Sharepoint website

  We have an intranet based on Sharepoint 2010. In this intranet we have several links to other webservers within the same Active Directory, for example a link to our Outlook Web Access site on our Exchange 2010 environment. We have three different setups which visit this Sharepoint environment and the other webservers: Windows 7 clients that are a member of the Active Directory Home pc's that connect through a SSL VPN appliance Standalone thin clients (Windows 7 embedded) within the corporate network The goal is to let people only sign in once. In the first group this isn't a problem because the AD Integrated Authentication works fine and the Windows logon is passed on to Sharepoint and the other webservers. The second group is also working fine because of the LDAP integration that the SSL VPN appliance uses. The third group is however experiencing issues. They need to enter their credentials everytime they click a link to another webserver. They first need to enter credentials for accessing the Sharepoint environment. When clicking the link for their webmail they have to re-enter their credentials, and so on. Can someone tell me what the best solution would be to also get SSO working fine for the third group? Some extra information: We also have a Forefront TMG server in our environment. I read somewhere that Forefront might be part of a solution for this problem, but not sure how. • Downloading Emails locally with Thunderbird

  I am using Gmail (web interface) for sometime now, and have well over 20 labels and some thousand mails there archived to different labels in Gmail. Now I want to have a local copy of all my mails and following points are important in the context: The Primary mail access mechanism would continue to be Gmail web for me. I just want a backup of my mail account locally. Ideally the mails should download locally in folders named after Gmail labels (I know this is possible via IMAP but probably not by POP) After all my mails are available locally, I will delete most of them in Gmail to free up space and because I want to archive them. The mails should continue to exist locally and should not be deleted when I delete when from Gmail web interface. I would be syncing my gmail account locally let's say every month. So, the new mails that I have sent/received during this period should come over to my local mailbox in the folders named after Gmail labels. I do understand that Gmail maintains a single copy of email having 2 different labels and such email would get duplicated locally in the 2 folders and I am okay with that. Essentially you can see I just want to archive my mails from the Gmail server to a local backup and then sync (one way from Gmail to locally) new mails at regular intervals. For some points above, POP seems to be the option while IMAP seems for the others. I am really confused and need help in deciding which of POP or IMAP would suit me best. I have currently chosen Thunderbird to be my local email client but would not have a problem switching to Outlook or anything else as long as I get my desired archiving functionality.

• Common Access Card (CAC) Authentication Using Java

  I'm bascially looking for someplace to start learning how to interface with a government CAC card using java. Ultimately, my goal is to find out how to use CAC card authentication (by PIN number) to authorize access to a website hosted using a Tomcat/J2EE server. But I'll need somewhere to start. So I figure I'd start by writing a small java program to simply read the CAC card information from the CAC card which is inserted into a card reader on my keyboard (DELL keyboard with CAC reader above the numeric keypad). By searching google, I found the cacard java project (https://cacard.dev.java.net/) which was replaced by the OpenSSO project. But I can't seem to find sample code of how to use it to connect to a card, read from a card, etc. Does anyone know where I can find some sample code so that I can start learning how to interact with a CAC card using java? Now I've configured my Solr instance so that it works on Tomcat (the example admin page), but if I try to change the sorlconfig.xml file i'll get the error message.   Hi ! I have a HTTP connector in my iPhone project and queries must have a parameter set from the username using the Fowler–Noll–Vo (FNV) Hash. I have a Java implementation working at this time, this is the code : long fnv_prime = 0x811C9DC5; long hash = 0; for(int i = 0; i < str.length(); i++) { hash *= fnv_prime; hash ^= str.charAt(i); } Now on the iPhone side, I did this : int64_t fnv_prime = 0x811C9DC5; int64_T hash = 0; for (int i=0; i < [myString length]; i++) { hash *= fnv_prime; hash ^= [myString characterAtIndex:i]; } This script doesn't give me the same result has the Java one. In first loop, I get this : hash = 0 hash = 100 (first letter is "d") hash = 1865261300 (for hash = 100 and fnv_prime = -2128831035 like in Java) Do someone see something I'm missing ? I have come from a world of Java and eclipse where JavaDocs and APIs are at your fingertips. Grails has some great features and plugins but I find their inner workings completely undescoverable and that makes me sad. Take for example the excellent authentication plugin, I set this up using the brief but accurate doc.   I have a project that I am working on that requires the use of the Mysql Connector for NHibernate, (Mysql.Data.dll). I also want to reference another project (Migrator.NET) in the same project. The problem is even though Migrator.NET is built with the reference to MySql.Data with specific version = false, it still tries to reference the older version of MySql.Data that the library was built with instead of just using the version that is there.. and I get the exception listed in the title: ---- System.IO.FileLoadException : Could not load file or assembly 'MySql.Data, Version=1.0.10.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) The version I am referencing in the main assembly is 6.1.3.0. How do I get the two assemblies to cooperate? If my main assembly is copied local to be used in the other assembly, will it use the settings in app.config or does this information have to be included with every application or assembly that references my main assembly?

• Knopflerfish packaging

  Hello, I am at the moment creating a matrix which is showing how far Knopflerfish, Equinox and Felix are OSGi 4.2 compliant. So far I looked at the Knopflerfish documentation (Link 1, Link 2) to get an idea of how much of the Core and Compendium specs are actually implemented. The core specification seems to be fully implemented, although there are some inconsistent statements about the Security Layer and the Declarative Services. What makes me wonder is how much of all the Compendium specs are implemented: Remote Services Log Service Http Service Device Access Configuration Admin Service Metatype Service Preferences Service User Admin Service Wire Admin Service IO Connector Service Initial Provisioning UPnP Device Service Declarative Services Event Admin Service Deployment Admin Auto Configuration Application Admin DMT Admin Service Monitor Admin Service Foreign Application Access Blueprint Container Tracker XML Parser Service Position Measurement and State Execution Environment To find out more I downloaded (Download page) the source code of Knopflerfish and had a look at it. It looks like some parts of the spec are implemented through the "original" framework provided by the OSGi Alliance (org.osgi.*). One example is the UPnP package: Does this mean that missing parts which are not directly implemented by Knopflerfish are added through the "original" OSGi framework? And does this also apply to other frameworks like Felix or Equinox?
