• So we've got a code review tool, now what can we use for software documents?

  We're using Subversion as a full CM for code and also for related project documents. We have JIRA and Fisheye. When we wanted to add a peer review tool, we looked at and tested several candidates. Our weighted requirements included both code and document review, but ultimately, the integration with JIRA slanted the scores in Crucible's favor. Atlassian has slammed the door on ever supporting Word or PDF in Crucible. I've tested several workaround methods to make Crucible work for documents without success. (The Confluence/Crucible plug-in was deprecated by Atlassian, so that option is out, too.) I haven't found a plugin for Crucible that adds this functionality, so short of writing my own plug-in, Crucible for documents is unworkable. Word Track Changes doesn't provide a method for true collaboration and commenting. Adobe PDF Comment and Markup is interesting, but doesn't provide a great way to keep a permanent quality record of the conversation. We can't go cloud-based, our documents must be locally hosted on our own server only. We're only on Sharepoint 2007. Help! Anyone have a suggestion?

• How do I remove a LOT of indexed pages from Google?

  A few weeks ago we have figured out that Google has indexed some information we would rather keep in some confidentiality, in the format of individual PDF files. Our assumption was that this was a problem with our robots.txt we had overlooked. Even though we are not sure whether or not this is the case, we are certain that the robots.txt file is in a valid format and is, according to Google's webmaster tools, blocking the files. However, even after this adjustment that has been made weeks ago, Google still has the PDF files indexed, but does tell us further information cannot be provided due to the robots.txt file being present. As you can hopefully understand, this is unwanted behaviour due to the nature of the documents. I am aware that there is a request page being provided by Google for this purpose, but there are a lot of files. Is there an easier way to get Google to remove all of the files from its search engine? If not, is there anything else you could advise us to do besides manually requesting Google to remove every single page? Thanks in advance.

• XSF-FO intellisense and national languages with Apache FOP

  Some time ago I showed how to get an intellisense and how to configure the FO.NET to acquire national characters inside the generated pdf files. Due to the limitations that I mensioned in my previous post, I started playing with the Apache FOP. In this post I want to show, how to acquire the same result as I showed in the two posts related to FO.NET.   Intellisense   To get the intellisense from the XSL-FO templates set the xsi:schemaLocation the same way I showed it in this post. The only diffrence to FO.NET is that, during generating the document by the code I showed last time we will get an exception:   org.apache.fop.fo.ValidationException: Invalid property encountered on "fo:root": xsi:schemaLocation (See position 6:11)   Fortunatelly there is a very easy way to resolve this without removing the entire attribute along with the intellisense. Add to the FopFactory the ignoreNamespace by:   FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); fopFactory.ignoreNamespace(http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance);   Notice that, the url specified in this method this is a namespace for the xmlns:xsi namespace, not xsi.schemaLocation.   Fonts / national characters   This point is a little dfferent to acquire, but not more complicated that it was with FO.NET. To set the fonts in Apache FOP 1.0, we need a configuration file. A sample one can be get from the directory where we unpacked the fop binaries, from conf subdirectory. There is a file called fop.xconf. We must copy this file to our solution. In the simplest way, in the <fonts> tag we can add  <auto-detect/>. Thanks to this, FOP will index all fonts available on the installed operating system. There probably should be no problem, if we have a http handler or a WCF Service on the server that serves the generated pdf documents. In this situation we can use all available fonts on this server.   To use this config file, we must set a path to it:   FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); fopFactory.setUserConfig(new File("fop.xconf"));

• Resolution changes when using switch

  So, the "real" resolution of my monitor is 1024x768. That's what I'd use on my docked Windows laptop, and what I'd use on my Xubuntu desktop connected directly. When I connect a switch, to switch between the two, however, the ubuntu machine's resolution changes. Everything's still proportional, and it still thinks it's doing 1024x768, but the icons and fonts appear larger. Not 800x600 larger, but still big. When I used Xubuntu Precise, I created an xorg.conf file to set a resolution of 1280x1024 which made it look the way it does without the switch ... as a workaround. When I upgraded to Trusty, I lost this. I tried to re-create it, but doesn't seem to load my file. Ideally, I'd like to correct the original problem, but I'd settle for being able to up the resolution. I searched for a while, and tried to do it, but I'm giving up ... please help me out.   Oracle Installed Base is an item instance life cycle tracking application that facilitates enterprise-wide life cycle item management and tracking capability.In a typical process flow a sales order is created and shipped, this updates Inventory and creates a new item instance in Install Base (IB).  The Inventory update results in a record being placed in the SFM Event Queue.  If the record is successfully processed the IB tables are updated, if there is an error the record is placed in the csi_txn_errors table and the error needs to be resolved so that the IB instance can be created.It's extremely important to be proactive and monitor IB Transaction Errors regularly.  Errors cascade and can build up exponentially if not resolved. Due to this cascade effect, error records need to be considered as a whole and not individually; the root cause of any error needs to be resolved first and this may result in the subsequent errors resolving themselves. Install Base Transaction Error Diagnostic Program In the past the IBtxnerr.sql script was used to diagnose transaction errors, this is now replaced by an enhanced concurrent program version of the script.   Some manipulation with SQL Server require re-starting SQL Server after that. If we restart operation system, does this always mean that we restart SQL Server also (it seems evident that it is so, but just in case I ask to be sure)? Or there could be situation when we should do it explicitely for example by context menu choosing "Restart" in SQL Server Configuration Manager? I.e. could it be necessary for something to restart SQL Server while OS is working?

It's quite bothering to: right click on rss link, choose "copy", then swich to tunderbird, right click on rss folder, choose "subscribe", push "Add", insert, ok. I'd prefer to: right click on rss link and choose the rss folder. The second motive for the question is that I'd like to look at implementation of interprocess manipulation of thunderbird. May be there is not exactly but something similar exist.

• Context menu opens slowly in Explorer in Windows 7, why?

  I'm running a Windows 7 on my reasonably modern laptop, when I open the context menu in Windows Explorer it really takes it time to show up (~10 seconds). There are some programs that have their commands added to it (an archive manipulation utility, an antivirus, a version control system and such). I think one of them freezes the operation. Is there a benchmark tool to measure it somehow or a tool to turn them off by one in Explorer without uninstalling them (which would be a penultimate measure, because use them)?

• JavaDay Taipei 2014 Trip Report

  JavaDay Taipei 2014 was held at the Taipei International Convention Center on August 1st. Organized by Oracle University, it is one of the largest Java developer events in Taiwan. This was another successful year for JavaDay Taipei with a fully sold out venue packed with youthful, energetic developers (this was my second time at the event and I have already been invited to speak again next year!). In addition to Oracle speakers like me, Steve Chin and Naveen Asrani, the event also featured a bevy of local speakers including Taipei Java community leaders. Topics included Java SE, Java EE, JavaFX, cloud and Big Data. It was my pleasure and privilege to present one of the opening keynotes for the event. I presented my session on Java EE titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond". I covered the changes in Java EE 7 as well as what's coming in Java EE 8. I demoed the Cargo Tracker Java EE BluePrints. I also briefly talked about Adopt-a-JSR for Java EE 8. No worries, just click here to download the PDF file. In the afternoon I did my JavaScript + Java EE 7 talk titled "Using JavaScript/HTML5 Rich Clients with Java EE 7". This talk is basically about aligning EE 7 with the emerging JavaScript ecosystem (specifically AngularJS). The talk was completely packed. The code should be a helpful resource if this development model is something that interests you. Do let me know if you need help with it but the instructions should be fairly self-explanatory. I am delivering this material at JavaOne 2014 as a two-hour tutorial. This should give me a little more bandwidth to dig a little deeper, especially on the JavaScript end. I finished off Java Day Taipei with my talk titled "Using NoSQL with ~JPA, EclipseLink and Java EE" (this was the last session of the conference). The talk covers an interesting gap that there is surprisingly little material on out there. The talk has three parts -- a birds-eye view of the NoSQL landscape, how to use NoSQL via a JPA centric facade using EclipseLink NoSQL, Hibernate OGM, DataNucleus, Kundera, Easy-Cassandra, etc and how to use NoSQL native APIs in Java EE via CDI. After the event the Oracle University folks hosted a reception in the evening which was very well attended by organizers, speakers and local Java community leaders. I am extremely saddened by the fact that this otherwise excellent trip was scarred by terrible tragedy. After the conference I joined a few folks for a hike on the Maokong Mountain on Saturday. The group included friends in the Taiwanese Java community including Ian and Robbie Cheng. Without warning, fatal tragedy struck on a remote part of the trail. Despite best efforts by us, the excellent Taiwanese Emergency Rescue Team and World class Taiwanese physicians we were unable to save our friend Robbie Cheng's life. Robbie was just thirty-four years old and is survived by his younger brother, mother and father. Being the father of a young child myself, I can only imagine the deep sorrow that this senseless loss unleashes. Robbie was a key member of the Taiwanese Java community and a Java Evangelist at Sun at one point. Ironically the only picture I was able to take of the trail was mere moments before tragedy. I thought I should place him in that picture in profoundly respectful memoriam: Perhaps there is some solace in the fact that there is something inherently honorable in living a bright life, dying young and meeting one's end on a beautiful remote mountain trail few venture to behold let alone attempt to ascend in a long and tired lifetime. Perhaps I'd even say it's a fate I would not entirely regret facing if it were my own. With that thought in mind it seems appropriate to me to quote some lyrics from the song "Runes to My Memory" by legendary Swedish heavy metal band Amon Amarth idealizing a fallen Viking warrior cut down in his prime: "Here I lie on wet sand I will not make it home I clench my sword in my hand Say farewell to those I love When I am dead Lay me in a mound Place my weapons by my side For the journey to Hall up high When I am dead Lay me in a mound Raise a stone for all to see Runes carved to my memory" I submit my deepest condolences to Robbie's family and hope my next trip to Taiwan ends in a less somber note.
