    I need to create certain number of UUId records (based on the selection of a drop down) and save them in the database. Now I am generating only one unique id. Can this be done in the model in this way?   • Create rails record from two ids

    The functionality I'm trying to build allows Users to Visit a Restaurant. I have Users, Locations, and Restaurants models. Locations have many Restaurants. I've created a Visits model with user_id and restaurant_id attributes, and a visits_controller with create and destroy methods. Thing is, I can't create an actual Visit record. Any thoughts on how I can accomplish this? Or am I going about it the wrong way.     Hello I'd like my dates in the mm/dd/year format in text fields. However, they currently displays as 2010-03-26. Is there a global setting I can set to change this?     I have a model that has an amount and I'm tracking to see if this amount is changed with a Model.amount_changed? with a before_save which works fine but when I check to see amount_was and amount_change? it only returns the updated amount not the previous amount. And all this is happening before it is save. It knows when the attribute is changed but it will not return the old value. Ideas?

    I have an inventory system, where a User has many inventory. We have a barcode column which needs to be sequential for each user. I run into a problem however when doing bulk association building. I end up getting several inventories for a user with the same barcode. For example: Inventory Table: id | user_id | barcode 1 | 1 | 1 2 | 1 | 2 3 | 2 | 1 4 | 2 | 2 5 | 1 | 3 In the Inventory model I have before_validation :assign_barcode, on: :create def assign_barcode self.barcode = (user.inventories.order(barcode: :desc).first.try(:barcode) || 0) + 1 end It generally works, but ran into a problem when seeding my db: (1..5).each do user.inventories.build(...) end user.save I end up with a bunch of inventories for user that have the same barcode. How can I ensure that inventories have unique barcodes even when adding inventories in bulk?

  • How do I serve Ruby on Rails applications on Windows Server 2008?

    I have spent the last several hours attempting to get Ruby on Rails running on a Windows server with no luck. At first I tried configuring a test application through IIS7's FastCGI support, but the documentation for this is not very good. I've been following this blog entry, and this one, and this one, and this one but everything seems to be missing major steps, or are out of date. And every article keeps linking back to this Howto from rubyonrails.org that doesn't exist. The sense that I'm getting is that even if I manage to make this work, IIS' FastCGI isn't good enough to use in a production environment anyway. So it looks like my best bet is to setup a reverse proxy in IIS that points to Apache & Mongrel/Passenger using ARR and UrlRewrite. Is there anybody else out there stuck deploying a Rails application on a Windows stack? Am I on the right track? Can you give me a better idea of how to configure this? I believe Plesk already installed an instance of Apache/Tomcat running on this server using a different port, so adding another virtual host shouldn't be difficult; the hardest part seems to be setting up the reverse proxy through IIS.

  • what receives an ajax call?

    I'm making a site which should (a) take information from the user in the form of files and forms, (b) take that data to the server to be run on a C application, and (c) take the result back and show it to the user. I was told to look for AJAX for the communication with the server. BTW, I'm using rails. I'm trying to understand how AJAX works. From what I understand so far, with rails is pretty easy to make the call. What I can't figure out is, what waits for that call? what process the call? If I understand correctly, with rails I could make a function in ruby and make it so it's called through AJAX, which means -or so I understand- that it gets executed on the server. If I were using PHP, would I need to make an http server to wait for the AJAX calls? I just don't find information about what waits for the call, and that information is processed. Any links, comments or books are welcome!

So when I'll be buying hosting, do I need to ask for something special? Like for example, we need to specify what kind of hosting we need, windows or linux. So for ruby on rails do I need some extra facilities from the hosting provider? Is ruby on rails a good choice for a large content related website? This may be a bit stupid but how do I choose my backend, scripting languages etc? Thing is I am really new to website development. And the flow of making websites is not clear. Any links will be helpful. EDIT: I know this question has been voted as non constructive.   • Perl script rendered in browser as code through symlink - fine when accessed directly

    I have a Rails 4 app that has some views that post to Perl cgi scripts. The perl scripts are accessed via a symbolic link to a folder called "cgi-bin". When I navigate to a perl script through the symbolic link they are rendered as text instead of executed (ie: localhost:3000/cgi-bin/test.cgi), however when I access them directly they execute without issue (ie. localhost/path/to/cgi-bin/test.cgi). I am using apache2 on os x. In the directory localhost/path/to/ I have an .htaccess file that contains the following: # General Apache options AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi AddHandler cgi-script .cgi Options +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI I have the exact same lines in the .htaccess file that I have in localhost:3000/ I have also uncommented the AllowOverride all in httpd.conf. The are no errors in apache's error log. When I access the direct link to test.cgi a new line is appended to apache's access log, when I access the script through the symbolic link (and it is rendered as text), there is no line appended to the access log. Any idea why this error occurs? This setup worked fine in a previous version of rails of OS X, but recently I upgraded to Mavericks and figured I should update the Rails application to v4.0 as well.

    I have an application using the SentientUser gem to provide the current user to my models. On top of that I'm using default scoping to ensure that a user can only ever access data that they own. So a typical model for me looks something like this: class Location < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :time_zone, :address belongs_to :account belongs_to :address accepts_nested_attributes_for :address default_scope :conditions => { :account_id => User.current.account } end When I run rake cucumber I get an error on the default_scope line about account being nil. My guess is that when the cucumber rake task is run it doesn't have access to the correct application controller to inject the current_user method and thus SentientUser can't get the current user?     This will probably just be a simple problem and I am just blind or an idiot but I could use some help. So I am going over some basic guides in Rails, reviewing the basics and such for an upcoming exam. One of the guides included was the sort-of-standard getting started guide over at guide.rubyonrails.org. Here is the link if you need it. Also all my code is for my app is from there, so I have no problem releasing any of my code since it should be the same as shown there. I didn't do a copy paste, but I basically was typing with Vim in one half of my screen and the web page in the other half, typing what I see. http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html So like I said, I am going along the guide when I noticed past a certain point in the tutorial, I was always getting an error on the site. To find the section of code, just hit Ctrl+f on the page (or whatever you have search/find set to) and enter "accepts_". This should immediately direct you to this chunk of code. class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :title validates_length_of :title, :minimum => 5 has_many :comments has_many :tags accepts_nested_attributes_for :tags, :allow_destroy => :true , :reject_if => proc { |attrs| attrs.all? { |k, v| v.blank? } } end So I tried putting this in my code. It is in ~/Rails/blog/app/models/post.rb in case you are wondering. However, even after all the other code I put in past that in the guide, hoping I was just missing some line of code that would come up later in the guide. But nothing, same error every time.     I installed and set up routing-filter as described on the gem documentation page. https://github.com/svenfuchs/routing-filter It works for the default locale. For example, if I set up my default locale as :en,the site is in English, and if I set my default locale as :zh, the site is in Chinese. www.site.com/zh/home (the default locale path /en is automatically added to the URL) But how can I make my site support BOTH languages? when the default locale is :zh, I tried to change the URL by substituting the "zh" with "en" but the page is still in Chinese, not English. Is this something not supported by the routing-filter gem? If not, is there some other gem I can use? Or have I not set up the routing-filter gem properly? Thanks!

And am I correct in assuming this is the cause of my problems? Note: To upgrade Ruby I installed the later version with apt-get and then switched to it by using update-alternatives --config ruby and selecting option 2 like this: root@ubuntu:/usr/local/pete-shopify/cart# update-alternatives --config ruby There are 2 choices for the alternative ruby (providing /usr/bin/ruby).   • Rails 3 NameError (cannot remove Object::Version) error

    Can anyone point me at what might be causing this error? There is no ApplicationTrace, and it locks the server hard on my development machine. I think it has something to do with the way rails reloads your classes in development mode, and it appears to have something to do with a Version constant. I can't find a reference to this though.   • Ruby on Rails: How to sanitize a string for SQL when not using find?

    I'm trying to sanitize a string that involves user input without having to resort to manually crafting my own possibly buggy regex if possible, however, if that is the only way I would also appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction to a regex that is unlikely to be missing anything. There are a number of methods in Rails that can allow you to enter in native SQL commands, how do people escape user input for those? The question I'm asking is a broad one, but in my particular case, I'm working with a column in my Postgres database that Rails does not natively understand as far as I know, the tsvector, which holds plain text search information. Rails is able to write and read from it as if it's a string, however, unlike a string, it doesn't seem to be automatically escaping it when I do things like vector= inside the model. For example, when I do model.name='::', where name is a string, it works fine. When I do model.vector='::' it errors out: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: PGError: ERROR: syntax error in tsvector: "::" "vectors" = E'::' WHERE "id" = 1 This seems to be a problem caused by lack of escaping of the semicolons, and I can manually set the vector='\:\:' fine. I also had the bright idea, maybe I can just call something like: ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute "UPDATE medias SET vectors = ? WHERE id = 1", "::" However, this syntax doesn't work, because the raw SQL commands don't have access to find's method of escaping and inputting strings by using the ? mark. This strikes me as the same problem as calling connection.execute with any type of user input, as it all boils down to sanitizing the strings, but I can't seem to find any way to manually call Rails' SQL string sanitization methods. Can anyone provide any advice?
