• How to be sure that my MVC project is running on the correct version after upgrade to vs2010?

  I just installed visual studio 2010 and upgraded my MVC project (which was running on MVC RC2 in visual studio 2008). visual studio 2010 updated every project file to target the framework 4.0. But the system.web.dll is pointing to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET MVC 2\Assemblies\System.Web.Mvc.dll in VS2010 object browser, I have every dll showing up in multiple versions as expected (3.5.0.0 and 4.0.0.0) except for the System.Web.Mvc dll which doesn't show any version and points to the path I mentioned above. Isn't this namespace point to the Framework folder like the System.Web namespace? C:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework.NETFramework\v4.0\System.Web.dll

  Once again one of those: "Is there an easier built-in way of doing things instead of my helper method?" So it's easy to get the underlying type from a nullable type, but how do I get the nullable version of a .NET type? So I have typeof(int) typeof(DateTime) System.Type t = something; and I want int? DateTime? or Nullable<int> (which is the same) if t is primitive then Nullable<T> else just T Any suggestions? (Is there something built in.) Thanks in advance.

  Hi - I would like to know how I can go about implementing my own version of a MVC framework in ASP.NET? I know there already is Microsoft provided ASP.NET MVC framework, but I want to learn MVC and thought the best way would be to implement my own flavor of a MVC framework on top of ASP.NET. Any thoughts / guidance ? Also, can anyone point me to a page where I can learn more about how microsoft implemented ASP.NET MVC ? I'm more interested in learning about the under the hood plumbing that goes on to implement the framework on top of asp.net, do they use HttpHandlers / HttpModules ? Thanks.

• "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application" running .NET app in virtual XP mac

  I've written a few winform apps in .net 2.0 which won't run in a virtual XP (running from VirtualBox). I get the error "unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application" (.NET Framework Initialization Error). I've tried fixing the installation of .net and also installing v3.5. I think it's probably a security issue rather than a framework problem, but i'm running under an administrator account. Other .net apps (2.0) run ok, so it might be a strong name/signing problem. I've tried compiling them completely unsigned and also delay signing them with a key and turning on verification skipping with the sn tool. help greatly appreciated!

  I use the on-demand (hosted) version of FogBugz. I would like to start using Mercurial for source control. I would like to integrate FogBugz and a BitBucket repository. I gave it a bit of a try but things weren't going very well. FogBugz requires that you hook up your Mercurial client to a fogbugz.py python script. TortoiseHg doesn't seem to have the hgext directory that they refer to in instructions. So has anyone successfully done something similar?

  I have a solution with 2 projects: My Application 1.2.54 (C# WinForms) My Application Setup 1.0.0.0 (WiX Setup) I would like to add a post-build event to the WiX Setup project to run a batch file and pass it a command line parameter of My Application's assembly version number. The code may look something like this: CALL MyBatchFile.bat "$(fileVersion.ProductVersion($(var.My Application.TargetPath)))" But this results in the following error: Unhandled Exception:The expression """.My Application" cannot be evaluated. • What is the preferred sql server column definition to use for a LINQ to SQL Version property?

  We are using the IsVersion property on the ColumnAttribute on a property in a LINQ to SQL class for optimistic concurrency checks. What should the column definition be in the database? Currently we are using version_number int NOT NULL IDENTITY (1, 1) Do we need Identity? Can we get LINQ to SQL to update the version number for us? The only issue with Identity is that every row has a different number. We'd like to see the number increment by 1 when the row is updated.

  Hi, I am not sure if the question even makes sense. I am writing an iPhone game which uses Opengl ES 2.0. I know that OpenGL ES 2.0 is supported on 3gs and higher.   In Visual Studio 2003, you could easily set your project assembly to auto-increment every time you built it, but with Visual Studio 2005, this functionality was removed. You can still auto-increment your assembly version on every build, but it's a complicated custom build step instead of an integrated feature. I'm not sure why this was removed, but here's a question I should have asked a while ago - Should I be using a workaround to continue to auto-increment when I build, or is there a good reason to stop doing this, in favor of manually incrementing? Since Microsoft removed it from VS, perhaps there's a good reason, and I'm wondering if anybody knows it.

• Is there a version of postActionEvent for KeyEvent (specifically for a JTextArea)?

  I'm writing a program that contains multiple JTextFields and 2 JTextAreas within an input panel. I have a submit button on the bottom. I have it set up so when a user types something into each field (including the JTextAreas) and hits the Enter key, it updates a text file, and when they press the submit button it updates the file then outputs a new version of it in the local directory. If the user presses Enter in any of the fields, it validates their input, however, I want to re-validate all fields when they press the submit button. Each field (again, JTextAreas included) has it's own validation check within its ActionListener or KeyListener (for the JTextAreas). It's easy enough to use postActionEvent() for the JTextFields, but is there a similar method for the JTextAreas to force fire a KeyEvent? I don't want to duplicate code and consume memory by re-writing the validation for those 2 Components inside the ActionEvent for the JButton. Unfortunately, I can't provide a sample because I'm writing the program on a classified machine (PC).

• Expression Studio - v2 good enough for learning?

  I have VS 2008, and looking forward to moving fairly quickly to VS2010. Our applications (we only have a few) are all winforms apps - mostly VB. I want to start to learn WPF. My version of Expression Studio is version 2. I have heard that the improvements made from version 2 to version 3 are significant. If it follows the paradigm of version 3 being the adult app (past the infancy of version 1 and the awkwardness of version 2), then I suppose it would be worth the investment to get it before starting to learn. But, unless my company was willing to pay, I am hoping to keep costs low. Can anyone share some experience - is version 2 good enough to learn on, or should I bite the bullet and smooth my learning experience by going with version 3? Thanks!

  I want to learn Web UI design. (I know, I know. Being a programmer puts me at a disadvantage. But I want to try anyway.) Thus, I would like to "debug" my CSS files. Once of the biggest annoyances I have found is that I cannot test a change in my CSS files without reloading the whole page. Sometimes, the page is too big. Sometimes, a lot of elements were brought to the page after lots of clicks, because my pages rely too heavily on AJAX. Sometimes, I just hate hitting Command+R all the time. Is there any extension for any of the major browsers (preferably Safari and/or Chrome) that re-renders the page using an updated version of the CSS file, without reloading the whole page itself?

• Can I use RVM to maintain a single version of Ruby for all users?

  I love RVM. I realize that the main use case for it is letting different users switch between different versions of Ruby. But let's say I'm deploying a Rails app to a server and I just want a single version of Ruby running. In particular, I want 1.9.2, which is a breeze to install with RVM but a pain without it. Is there a way that I can say "I want this to be the canonical Ruby installation for all users" (along with all of its gems) without having to create a bunch of symlinks by hand and change them every time I update to a newer Ruby release?

• 505 (HTTP version not supported) sent to client when ASP.NET application attempts to access WCF service

  We have created a DLL to facilitate access of a 3rd-party WCF Service. This DLL works fine in a Windows Application on our test machines, but when we try to use it in an ASP.NET application on our web server, our web server returns a 505 HTTP version not supported error to the client. To clarify, the setup is Client-Server-WCF Service. Using Fiddler, I can tell that our server is not making requests to the WCF Service. The calls are wrapped in a try/catch block, but no Exception occurs. Instead, as soon as the call to the service is attempted, our server returns a 505 error to the client and terminates execution. We are using clientCertificate authentication over HTTPS with serviceCertificate certificateValidationMode set to "None". Thanks

• What is the easiest straightforward way of telling which version performs better?

  I have an application, which I have re-factored so that I believe it is now faster. One can't possibly feel the difference, but in theory, the application should run faster. Normally I would not care, but as this is part of my project for my master's degree, I would like to support my claim that the re-factoring did not only lead to improved design and 'higher quality', but also an increase in performance of the application (a small toy-thing - a train set simulation). I have toyed with the latest VisualVM thing today for about four hours but I couldn't get anything helpful out of it. There isn't (or I haven't found it) a way to simply compare the profiling results taken from the two versions (pre- and post- refactoring). What would be the easiest, the most straightforward way of simply telling the slower from the faster version of the application. The difference of the two must have had an impact on the performance.   Hello, I'm currently working on an application that needs to check a web service for an updated version of a locally stored XML file. If there is an update the file must then be downloaded and saved to the iPhone. I'm not really sure what direction I need to head in. Currently I know that I can use NSURLConnection delegate methods to establish a connection and receive a response but I'm not sure how to implement this with the web service to grab the file and replace the current one that is stored on the iPhone. I have been using the GetExportedValues() method and the PartCreationPolicy(CreationPolicy.NonShared) to fake a class factory (since only the silverlight version supports a factory). This was working great until I upgraded the project to use .net 4.0. There is no error, it just doesn't work. So why did this code stop working? • Can Perforce remove a version entry (like ClearCase Destroy)?

  I submitted a Changelist in Perforce, but I forgot to remove a couple of files from the list first. I want to undo those changes. I understand that Perforce allows me to "rollback" -- but that just submits another change to the file, cluttering my branch. This is a file I did not intend to change at all. When I go to integrate back into the baseline, this file shows up as needing to be integrated (even though it's the same as what's on the baseline). In Clearcase, I had the ability to simply issue a "destroy" command on the specific version of the file, nuking it from the repository, as if had never been (yes, I realize this is scary from a revision control perspective - I understand the risks). Is there an equivalent command in Perforce? Or am I trying to do something expressly forbidden?

  I am using require.js to require JS modules in my application. I need a way to bust client cache on new JS modules, by way of a different requested URL. i.e., if the file hello/there.js has already been cached on the client, I can change the file name to force the browser to get the new file. In other words, for the module hello/there, I'd like require.js to request the url hello/there___v1234___.js (the file name can look different, it's just an example), according to a version string which is accessible on the client. What is the best way to achieve that?

• How do i view the index version of a file before it is committed?

  I have just performed add --interactive, so the index version of some files is different than the working-directory versions. Instead of doing diff --cached, I want to actually dump the contents of each file in the index, but I can't find a command to do that. I should think that there would be something like "git show INDEX:filename...", but "INDEX" is not a valid object name. I was able to do git ls --cached, then git show , but there should be a more straightforward method to see what you are committing.
