• ADMIN$ and other shares not working remotely on XP machines

  I'm trying to use ADMT to migrate several XP machines to a new domain and the utility (nor command line) is able to access the admin$ share or any drive share. I've added the required registry key (HKCurrent\Services\LanMan\Param) for both servers and workstation admin sharing, rebooted the PC and still am unable to access it. How can I access the admin share on these PCs? If it helps, this machine used to have McAfee installed, and the Windows firewall enabled. I stoppped both of them and the machine is still not allowing me to access it remotely by a drive$ share.

• Url rewriting stops working after changing default port on iis7

  I have migrated the IIS6 webserver 2003 websites to IIS7 webserver 2008 using msdeploy tool. Application pool setting are changed with "Enable 32-bit Applications=true", "Managed_Pipeline_Mode=Classic","Identity=NetworkService" Framework=v1.1/2.0. All the websites are working fine on default port along with url rewriting migrated from iis6. When I start the webserver on port other than default port by changing bindings, url rewriting stops workings and get 404 error in logs. I think I don't have to change the handler mapping cause I am running it in classic mode. How can I troubleshoot this?

• Fine control over zoom and aspect ratio in VLC player

  In VLC Player (v1.01), how do I zoom video and control aspect ratio with fine control, as is possible with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPCHC)? The standard zoom appears to only support double, normal, quarter size etc, not useful to me at all. An example: I play an older music video file that is in 4:3 aspect ratio. In MPCHC I can use the number pad to zoom in small increments until I have removed the left and right letterbox bars and the video fills the whole screen. I can also stretch and move the video in small increments until I am happy with the aspect ratio and position. I could continue using MPCHC, but I have two displays and really like VLC feature enabling full-screen video on the main screen and the VLC interface (menus etc) on the second. I have not found a way to do this on MPCHC, if anyone knows I'd also be interested to hear.

  In an ASP.NET 2.0 Application, an ActiveX control is used. When user first time access the appliction and he/she did not have that ActiveX registered. Application show a popup to install ActiveX. When user follow the process, ActiveX is registered and application loads the ActiveX to accomplish desired tasks. In Windows Vista, Win 7 and Win 8, User Access Control (UAC) is prompted to allow to install the ActiveX at very first time. This happens even if user is Administrator too. What are alternatives to override this UAC component while installing ActiveX ? Suggestions are appreciated.

  all. My company host all the software, including application and website in one local ubuntu server. But recently we start to use Amazon EC2, and want to move the whole server to cloud. Is there anyway to copy the entire server to EC2? OS is the same, ubuntu 12.04, and just one server, and one user account. On EC2 is also one instance, one account. I don't know whether there is a simple and quick way to do that. Thanks a lot!!

  I have just started playing around with Vmware sphere and have the hypervisor OS installed on a spare HP ProLiant DL360 G4. I have created a test virtual machine running Ubuntu which has worked well. As a test project I wanted to convert a powered on server running Windows Server 2008 64bit into a virtual machine. As soon as I ran the Vmware Go software to start the conversion it became apparent that I cannot run 64bit guest OS's on that particular server. So, is there a way of migrating 64bit to 32bit during the conversion?

  I had a simple plone site running on my Ubuntu 8.10 box, setup by following instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/forum/server/Plone Now the computer got an Ubuntu 9.04 install from scratch, and I want to get the site up and running. As far as I understand several python libraries from 9,04 are not compatible with plone.   I have hosted my site in a shared environment. Recently for security reasons the hosting company has disabled socket functions. When i enquired them they said that they will enable to people who personally request for that option. And they said it is a matter of 2 minutes work and asked for my control panel username and password. They said that it is just updating the php.ini for my account. So i want to know how to do it myself. If that could be done by them in 2 minutes then why cant a developer. I asked them but they mumbled... saying not to give trouble to me. so i want to know how to edit php.ini or something like stated above my hosting is using cPanel control panel. suggestions please.

• What's the easiest way to migrate one Mac OSX volume to another

  I want to move a volume from a smaller drive to a larger unformatted one. What is the best way to achieve this? Ideally I'd like the new volume to have the same name as the older volume as it contains user accounts, and is a destination of various symlinks that I have on other volumes. Update: I used Carbon Copy Cloner in the end and it worked perfectly. I was able to simply rename the new volume in Finder to the same name as the old volume and then powered down and removed the old drive on which the volume lived. When I restarted, the new volume seamlessly worked in place of the old volume.

• How to transfer Windows Vista disk image to new machine

  I'm trying to upgrade a user's machine to some better hardware. I know of Easy Transfer, but I'd rather not have to reinstall all the programs that are already present. (Some of which are no longer available, anyway). Instead, I'm trying to transfer the entire disk image from one machine to the other, but I ran into issues. If I copy the partition image over to the new machine using Clonezilla, I get errors on boot saying that I need to insert the Vista install disk and run repair. I do that, but it then says that it is unable to repair whatever it is that's broken. Next, I tried to sysprep the old machine before creating the image, but sysprep fails saying that it encountered some sort of system error. Should it be possible to sysprep any arbitrary machine, or does it only work on a relatively clean install? Could it be a missing driver that is tripping me up? The new machine is a fairly stock desktop that shouldn't need any special drivers beyond what's already present in standard Vista. Are there any foolproof methods for doing this sort of thing?

• Migrate Domain from Server 2008 R2 to Small Business Server 2011

  I'm looking for some advice here, rather than the big how to do it I'm looking for what do to I have this home server, quad core and 4 GB of ram (I really can't afford more right now). With a Windows Serve 2008 R2 With ActiveDirectory and a Hyper-V-Virtual machine with SharePoint, TFS and a couple of more thigs. I have a least 10 remote users, all of them joined a Hamachi VPN (working great by the way). But I want to migrate that to a Small Business Server 2011 Standard. I tried to make a VM to join the domain and then promote that VM, back up it and then format the physical server, boot up the VM, Promote the Phisical and then erase the VM, but I can't do that because of SBS requiring a least 4 GB of ram to install (so I can't give all the 4 GB of physical ram to a VM). I was thinking in using a laptop (All the clients are laptop) as a temporal server, join the domain, promote it, then format the server and install SBS on the server and do all again. I really need some advice. Thanks in advance. BTW, I know that the software I'm using is kindda expensive, and I can't afford more hardware. I have access to MS downloads by a University partnership so I have all this software for free.

To migrate the contents of a complete SVN repository into a new repository, one has to dump the old repository first: svnadmin dump /path/to/repository > repository-name.dmp and then load it into the new one using svnadmin load. But I'm not sure how to just migrate a part. Do I still have to dump the whole thing? Do I grep for the part that I want?   I currently have a Windows 2008 R2 box that I want to convert to a hyper-v host. Currently I have the following running on it: File Services, Web Server (IIS), and Sql Server 2008 R2 with a few different DBs. In the long term, I'd like to move all of those over to the VMs that will be created. However, in the short term I'd like to leave them running on the server. Are there any complications/problems with leaving them running on the hyper-v server for a day or two? How long will those services typically go down during the addition of the hyper-v role? Right now my plan is to back up everything, enable the hyper-v role, set up VMs, and migrate stuff off of the host. However, if there is a good probability that something may cease to function I might need to migrate everything over to a temporary host before doing the conversion.

How would you approach this to get best bandwidth given that I'd like to spend less than $10,000 on the interconnect. I've read that LSI 2308 chip can easily handle 8-drive SSD RAID6 in hardware. I'd like to harness its power to control 24 SAS hard drives over an expander in an external enclosure. Currently I use an Infortrend S24S-G2240 external enclosure. It provides its own controller and expander. I'd like to use LSI 2308 controller for RAID6 somehow instead of the mystery controller in the enclosure. P.S. • Migrating 10-15 Websites Running Linux, LAMP, RoR, WordPress

  Task is to move 10-15 websites running Linux to new servers hosted by Amazon. These boxes are currently on dedicated servers. Some sites are running WordPress, some have custom CMS, and others might have RoR applications. Unfortunately, there is sparse documentation regarding each site and how services/files are dependent on each other which means there is a lot of detective work that needs to take place. My goal is to properly document each site, what makes them work, etc., so future admins have at least something to work with. Currently my strategy is to download each site so I have a backup of the files then scan through them looking for configuration files -- db connections, apache configs, etc. Then, create a nice spreadsheet with these findings and migrate these out to the new server. My question to ServerFault is this, are there things you would look out for? Easier ways to handle this task that I'm missing? Points will be awarded to answers that help with efficiency. • Migrating Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 (migrate all FSMO too)

  I own 2 server with Windows 2008 R2, both DC. The first one is of course the Primary DC (with all FSMO). What I would like to do is ro dcdemote the 2nd DC, remove it from domain and replace the Windows 2008 r2 with 2012. I will then rejoin this 2nd DC (with the new 2012 server) to domain and dcpromo it (Server Management). After this is a new DC I would like to temporary transfer all the FSMO to this server, while I'm doing the same operation on what is actually the Primary DC. Is this a stupid solution? What I would like to do is a clean installation, I don't want to upgrade directly those systems. Suggestions? Ideas? Thanks, Mauro

• Replacing notebook SATA hard disk with SSD without reinstalling

  So there's a notebook (Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m) with a SATA hard disk, the SATA controller is configured for native AHCI operation & the OS is Windows XP. The hard disk is going to be replaced with an SSD which is larger. I have an idea of how I'm going to do this, but I want to be sure there isn't something obvious I'm missing. Connect external USB drive Boot some flavour of Linux live CD Use dd to clone the SATA disk to the external drive Power off and replace the SATA disk with the SSD Boot the live CD Use dd to clone back from the external drive to the SSD Does anyone have anything to add?
