Quote from report: “Oracle has adopted the correct approach to creating a social layer and socially enabled applications. Oracle Social Network is not simply another enterprise social network product; it is a complete social layer for the enterprise application stack. This approach will serve Oracle users well in the future.” OSN allow to capture the related Conversations of a business process right where it’s happens – within the respective Business application.  Fusion CRM is an excellent example for this approach. • Windows Azure Use Case: Infrastructure Limits

  This is one in a series of posts on when and where to use a distributed architecture design in your organization's computing needs. You can find the main post here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckwoody/archive/2011/01/18/windows-azure-and-sql-azure-use-cases.aspx  Description: Physical hardware components take up room, use electricity, create heat and therefore need cooling, and require wiring and special storage units. all of these requirements cost money to rent at a data-center or to build out at a local facility. In some cases, this can be a catalyst for evaluating options to remove this infrastructure requirement entirely by moving to a distributed computing environment. Implementation: There are three main options for moving to a distributed computing environment. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) The first option is simply to virtualize the current hardware and move the VM’s to a provider. You can do this with Microsoft’s Hyper-V product or other software, build the systems and host them locally on fewer physical machines. This is a good option for canned-applications (where you have to type setup.exe) but not as useful for custom applications, as you still have to license and patch those servers, and there are hard limits on the VM sizes. Software as a Service (SaaS) If there is already software available that does what you need, it may make sense to simply purchase not only the software license but the use of it on the vendor’s servers. Microsoft’s Exchange Online is an example of simply using an offering from a vendor on their servers. If you do not need a great deal of customization, have no interest in owning or extending the source code, and need to implement a solution quickly, this is a good choice. Platform as a Service (PaaS) If you do need to write software for your environment, your next choice is a Platform as a Service such as Windows Azure. In this case you no longer manager physical or even virtual servers. You start at the code and data level of control and responsibility, and your focus is more on the design and maintenance of the application itself. In this case you own the source code and can extend or change it as you see fit. An interesting side-benefit to using Windows Azure as a PaaS is that the Application Fabric component allows a hybrid approach, which gives you a basis to allow on-premise applications to leverage distributed computing paradigms. No one solution fits every situation. It’s common to see organizations pick a mixture of on-premise, IaaS, SaaS and PaaS components. In fact, that’s a great advantage to this form of computing - choice. • SSO between multiple Flex applications

  We have three applications developed in Flex and all these use BlazeDS. These applications have their own authentication implementations (Database). Also they will be deployed in tomcat. Deploying all these applications in the same tomcat instance is acceptable for us. We want to bring the authentication credentials of all these applications into a single place and also provide SSO feature between these applications. We also want the authentication module to be configurable. Something like the system administrator can decide if the authentication should be done against a database or LDAP. Say, if the user successfully logs into app1, and when he access app2 in the same browser he should be automatically logged in. Same goes for logout as well. We have been exploring OpenAM, jGuard and JOSSO. I'm not sure if these require lot of customization to work with Flex. I would like to know how people are implementing SSO for Flex applications. Is there a common and simple SSO solution available for Flex based applications ?

• Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 SP1 released to manufacturers

  SP1 went RTM today which means it will be widely available soon. According  to the Microsoft server division blog, the service pack will be available to Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as to Microsoft volume licensing customers, on Feb. 16, 2011. • Switching my legacy desktop back to Windows XP from Windows 7

  I was happy with Windows 7 at the beginning, until I started to add in the peripherals.  Windows 7 was never able to recognize any of my PCI video card (I know, I know, we should be in the DVI age). Anyway, I went through another 4 days of trouble setting my computer up with dual monitor in XP (also did a bunch of other things like getting rid of my sound card and taking the computer off RAID. Kind of feel stupid to put the computer on RAID in the first place because now I can have 2 drives: double the page files program seems to run faster Microsoft Sync toy 2.1 takes care of my backup needs (Thank god they solved the network drive issue) As of last night, the system is running beautifully.  I still have a laptop with Windows 7, but even that is in dual boot mode.

There may, of course, be undocumented changes where an update was not previously released separately and so has no associated KB article published. According to the Core Team, Volume Licensed, MSDN and TechNet subscribers get access February 16th, 2011. • Do I have to learn html and javascript to create web applications?

  I am an experienced Java programmer, and I want to create a complex web application requiring dynamic pages, drawings, etc (take SO as an example). Do I have to learn javascript/html in order to create such an application? It is not that I don't want to learn another language (I've done this before), but technology on the javascript environment seems to change so fast that when you finish learning one framework it is already obsolete. I have checked a number of java framework for web development (spring, play), but not deeply. So can these frameworks (or other possible java frameworks that I'm not aware of) be used without learning html/javascript? I also have some python experience. So if I can do the app in python it is also an option.

• Notepad and Regedit does not launch from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, but will from C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  My work machine was recently updated from Windows XP 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I have found a few odd things that I can not figure out why they are occurring. If I type in Notepad.exe or RegEdit.exe from the Run diaglog the applications will not launch. When executing RegEdit.exe from the Run dialog the UAC does display asking for admin privileges, but the application never launches. Also, if I go to the Start menu and click on Notepad from there, Notepad never launches either. Other programs seem to be okay, like mspaint, wordpad, etc. Now, if I launch Notepad or RegEdit from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 then these applications will run, though I think these are the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version. I am not sure what is going on. Has anyone seen this behavior before and how to fix it? I have Windows 7 64-bit at home and I don't have this issue. I even copied Notepad.exe from home and place it in the C:\ folder and tried to launch it from there and it still doesn't work. Regards, Mark

If I have a .reg file with some keys in it, how can I tell regedit to import it into the 32-bit registry (under Wow6432Node) rather than the 64-bit registry? Even if I put the Wow6432 path into the registry keys in the .reg file, Windows "cleverly" ignores them and puts them in the main 64-bit registry.

Our software vendor is now requiring windows server 2003 R2 for it's next version and I'm wondering if I will have any issues running the R2 upgrade. I see a lot of Microsoft articles referencing upgrading from 2003 or 2003 SP1 but nothing talking about upgrading to R2 from SP2.

  I am recording some game play capture (recording playing of PS3 or Wii) using a PC with Windows 7 and Hauppauge 1212 HD Recorder, and I have 4GB of RAM... is there a way to increase the size of Windows 7's hard disk cache size so that writing to the hard drive can be super fast? Since there is at least 1.5GB of RAM not being used, something like allocating 1GB just as hard disk cache, is it possible?
