• Unable to boot either Ubuntu or Windows after kernel panic

  Hi, Today I have been unable to boot into my Ubuntu (10.10) or Windows (7) partition. Ubuntu kernel panics on boot with the error: init: hash.c:296: Assertion failed in nih_hash_search: hash != NULL I can boot into a LiveUSB environment, and from there can access all my files on my 3 partitions (1 ext4, 2 NTFS). I have also ran fsck on the ext4 partition and ntfsfix on the 2 NTFS partitions, both not finding any errors at all. And Grub is intact and have also tried a reinstall of it. So at the moment I'm currently stuck using a LiveUSB, and would like to see if there are any other options other than reinstalling. Thanks. Update I've now ran chkdsk using my Windows recovery disk, and it found errors and fixed them, but I am still unable to boot into either Windows or Ubuntu Update #2 I've decided to just re-install Ubuntu and start again as I didn't really want to spend any more time looking around whilst I need this computer for work. • Ubuntu One Windows application only accessing gpg files

  I'm on a windows 7 (64) machine right now, I have the Ubuntu One windows application. I'm synced to my online account, the folder I am accessing is... deja-dup\My-desktop When I click 'Sync Locally' checkbox and explore my folder I am only able to see three files of the form duplicity-full.#######.manifest.gpg duplicity-full.#######.vol1.difftar.gpg duplicity-full-signatures.#######.sigtar.gpg How do I access the content of these file? I put them on a linux server and decrypted them/ extracted them, however something is wrong. Note: I cannot use apt-get on the linux server I'm using. • .NET Libraries Cost More Than Windows?

  When looking into libraries to make my programming life a little bit easier I've (almost) always been disappointed by the prices offered. For instance, Actipro's WPF Studio is $650. I suppose that's worth it if you plan to make money from the use of those controls. But take a look at, say, Windows. Windows 7 Ultimate is just about $220. I consider Windows to be a far more complex and "worth-it" product/purchase than a library that runs on it. Why the significant difference in pricing? Do libraries really need to be so expensive, or do they need to charge more in order to make a decent some of money?

  I have a desktop computer with windows 7 installed on it . Recently I downloaded ubuntu 12.04 and burned the iso image on a new blank DVD . After successfully burning DVD , I booted from the DVD. Ubutu interface appeared asking me to either choose try ubuntu or install ubuntu . I chose to install ubuntu. Again on next screen I choose to install ubuntu inside windows 7. After pressing continue button the following message appeared : " checking battery state .............. ok checking for running unattended upgrades : acpid : exiting speech dispatcher disabled ; edit /etc/default/ speech -dispatcher Asking all remaining processes to terminate ............. ok Please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press enter : " Now the problem is that when I remove the installation media ( ie the DVD ) and press enter then instead of installing ubuntu the computer reboots into windows 7 !!! I am a newbie to ubuntu and therefore do not know much about it . What should I do?

  I have two laptops, One is running Ubuntu 12.04 (EXT4) the other is running Windows 7 (NTFS). I am copying over 40gb of data (one file) from the Ubuntu laptop to the Windows Laptop. (Browse the shared folder on Ubuntu using Windows copy/paste) But I am getting transfer speeds topping out at ~700kb/s Surely this is not right. I am transferring via wifi on both laptops.   My friend asked me to look at her Acer Aspire laptop with Vista Home Premium as it is no longer playing DVDs. I found that Windows Media Player would not launch. I found this thread, which contained a number of suggestions, none of which solved the problem. Here is what I tried: Tried running WMP via desktop shortcut, QuickLaunch bar or going to Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe. In all cases, wmplayer would launch then terminate immediately (verified through the Processes tab in Task Manager). Tried running wmplayer.exe as Administrator. The UAC dialog would come up, I'd approve, then wmplayer would launch and terminate immediately. Uninstalled all non-Microsoft media programs except RealPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime, Acer Arcade (the laptop owner uses all those apps). Tried running Program Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe as Administrator, it launched but said that a newer version of WMP was already installed. Deleted the "Windows Media" folder located under %userprofile%\appdata\local\Microsoft then tried starting WMP - wmplayer would launch and terminate immediately. Register wmp.dll by typing "regsvr32 wmp.dll" in an Administrator cmd window then tried starting WMP - wmplayer would launch and terminate immediately. Run "SFC /SCANFILE" in an Administrator cmd window - get an error message that it found invalid system files and could not fix them, so look at the log file cbs.log. The log file shows that there are broken files associated with Windows Sidebar (which the user does not use) but none relating to WMP. Log off to safe mode and run "SFC /SCANFILE" in an Administrator cmd window again - same results. Try to download and install XP WMP - the microsoft.com site recognizes the OS as Genuine and allows the download, but when I launch the installer it says the system is not Genuine. Clicking the link directs me back to IE where I can authenticate the system as Genuine. The installer still fails to recognize the system as Genuine. It is a Genuine Vista installation. Try to run this update (KB931621). The installer said it did not apply to the system. Set Windows Media Player as default in Program Access and Defaults. Same results. Tried running "for %a in (%systemroot%\system32\wm*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %a" in an Administrator cmd window - same results. Went to this Knowledge Base article (947541) and ran the Microsoft Fix It. The Fix It ran successfully, but WMP would still launch and terminate immediately. Multiple reboots in the process of doing all of these steps. After all this, looked in the Application and Security logs. No events pertaining to WMP were logged. The computer was preinstalled with Vista Home Premium and I have the Acer backup DVDs which will reimage the drive. I do not have Vista install DVDs. Reimaging the system is not an option. I'd also rather not restore the system to an earlier point unless it's absolutely necessary. What else can I do to repair or reinstall WMP?

  I am a fairly proficient Linux programmer. I have been coding in Linux for 4 years, for both personal reasons and for profit. During those 4 years I have not even owned a computer running the Windows operating system. I am looking to expand my horizons into Windows programming, but am finding myself overwhelmed with the lack of what I perceive to be standardization. I feel as though different compilers follow different conventions, and all of the worthwhile IDEs cost money. Whats worse is that so many of the Tutorials are just terrible. If anyone else has taken the switch from Linux to Windows programming, what was the most helpful. What are the most straightforward IDEs and tutorials for using the API. I am looking to do mainly C and C++ development, along with some x86. I have found MASM primarily suits my needs for the latter.

• Ubuntu 11.10 loads from live usb fine, but boots to black screen from harddrive. Why?

  A few days ago I had a hard drive failure, which was running Windows XP (32-bit) just fine. The second hard drive in my computer held a few unimportant files, so I formatted it in the Ubuntu setup and installed 11.10 without a hitch. I had been using it for about a week, but decided to install Windows 7 (64-bit) in order to utilize Networking with my home server (running Windows Server 2000). My system is 64-bit based, and thus I had no problems installing other than a basic RAM error that required me to remove my RAM down to a single stick. I played with the settings in Windows 7 for around an hour before I shut down. After reinstalling the RAM, Windows 7 would not boot. In this, I then assumed that something about my system was rejecting Win7 and I reinstalled Ubuntu. However, now Ubuntu (11.10) boots into black screen, and I've already attempted activating the grub menu with the shift key, and following steps listed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen but nothing seems to work. I've reinstalled twice now, with the same result each time. Now, the very odd part about this whole scenario is that the USB I installed from has no problems booting as a live USB. This puzzles me greatly, because the hard drive boots straight to black screen and the live USB loads normally. At this point, my only theory is that the boot sector of the hard disk was somehow corrupted with Win7, and that Ubuntu was unable to completely write through. I used Darik's Boot n Nuke to wipe the drive, but was met with an error, this also puzzles me because the hard disk has no promblems reading or writing. Any suggestions/comments are appreciated. If you have a theory, I will be more than happy to oblige. Additional information: Intel Core2 Duo e6400 2.13GHz nVidia GeForce 7-series (7900 GS) 4 GB DDR2 333MHz (2x 2GB) Dell XPS 410 BIOS Revision 2.5.3

• Install problem on UEFI, Windows 8 new desktop

  I just bought an HP desktop, p6-2326s, which has windows 8 installed. I have tried booting a Ubuntu live disc but the machine won't boot it. When I bring up the UEFI boot menu it offers a selection of UEFI BOOT SOURCES, windows boot manager, dvd drive, IP4 Ethernet controller, or IP6 Ethernet controller. If I select the dvd drive with the CD in it I get the message "Secure boot violation, Invalid structure detected. Check secure boot policy in setup." With all other selections it just boots into windows. So where do I go from here?

• Ubuntu One isn't syncing in Windows 7

  Ubuntu One was working just fine in friend's computer on Windows 7. Problem is that, suddenly it has stopped syncing. I want to share some observation regarding this problem. Hope this could be helpful to solve the problem. If I upload any file directly on web (using browser), the amount of file size (KB/GB) changed in both places, Web dashboard and Ubuntu One control panel on Windows 7, but I can't find the file on PC. "File sync in progress" hangs on the U1 control panel on windows for indefinite time. If I keep any file in the U1 synced folder, that's not available on the PC and the total amount of file size isn't changed anywhere. "File sync in progress" dialogue is always there, since the starting of the PC. User using the PC with administrative previlage. Hope this problem will be solved quickly.

• I think I deleted my windows

  I tried to intall backtrack using a bootable cd. I think I clicked the option and it overwrote my windows 7. How do I get that back? I do not have a windows restore cd. Backtrack did not actually install at the time it stated there was a problem at 24% I then tried to get into Windows after shutting down and OS never booted up again. Does this mean I lost all my documents and programs? Can I call the company that sold my laptop to and get a bootable CD? Thank you.

  So about half an hour ago I decided to try out Ubuntu and in the process of doing so, my hard drive got wiped. My Windows 8 installation, and all the files with it are gone. Since my laptop came preinstalled with Windows 8, I don't have a disk or anything to use to install it again. I guess I'll have to install all of my things again, but first, I just want to know how to get Windows 8 back(will the serial number on the bottom of my laptop work?) so I can get back to an OS I'm familiar with. Any explanations would be great. Please don't be too technical though.

• After installing Ubuntu I can't boot Windows 8 anymore

  I just bought a new laptop (a lenovo ideapad Z500) and it came installed with Windows 8. I wanted to have Ubuntu on it too, therefore I resized the Win8 partition from the control panel and installed Ubuntu on the free space I created. Ubuntu works perfectly, Windows does not load anymore... I tried the recommended repair with Boot-Repair but it did not fix, now I get a "Windows boot loader failed to start" on startup and then I get the GRUB screen. • Dual boot: Linux Grub loader does not show windows

  my computer previously only had windows installed on it. Recently I decided to try Linux and opted for a dual boot so I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit on a separate hard drive within my computer. After installation my computer would directly boot to Linux upon start up and did not even show a grub screen. Using the boot-repair I was finally able to make the Grub loader show a boot list upon start up, but the Windows partition is not there. • Ubuntu one sync problem with Windows

  I installed ubuntu one (ubuntuone-3.0.2b) on my Windows 7 pc. My problem is that it does not sync my files without admin rights. The ubuntu one app gets my username and used space, but then hangs.... Then I run the app as admin and it opens, and works correctly. After I run it as admin for all users (right click properties, run as administrator for all users) then the app will not autostart with windows, but when I open the app manually it works correctly. (the uac promt comes up and I accept) I think it is the UAC promt wich prevents it from autostarting, but I do not know how to work around this. I don't know if it is a bug or a problem with windows 7.

• Connecting to a Windows SVN server from Ubuntu

  I need to access an SVN repo hosted on a Windows machine from Ubuntu. However, even if I supply the proper credentials, it denies me access, apparently because Windows does not allow Linux connections (as they told me); sure enough, I got in when I tried to checkout from my XP partition. While I have my box dual-booted, it is inconvenient to switch just for SVN. So, does anyone know how I can access that SVN repo from Ubuntu? I've tried installing TortoiseSVN and Windows Subversion under Wine but I can't even get them to run; they were asking for some DLLs that I don't know how to supply. I've thought of installing a virtual XP just for SVN but I consider that too extreme and I'd be glad if anyone can advise a simpler workaround.

  I have two HDDs. First HDD has four partitions with Windows XP in the first partition Second has two partitions and 15GB unallocated space. I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the second HDD by using Unallocated space. I tried for 6 times. Each time it got installed, but after first restart, it directly boots Windows XP in the first HDD and no boot options appear. Every time I found that the Ubuntu installation used unallocated space and made two partitions one EXT3 and other Linux swap. I don't know what went wrong. During Installation, Ubuntu detected Windows XP. Can anybody help me?
