• Microsoft Keyboard(8000) play button opens Windows Media Player rather than Zune on Windows 7

  Im currently using the Microsoft 8000 keyboard on Windows 7 and before installing Microsoft's Keyboard application, it was opening Zune and playing music with the play button. After installation, it is now opening Windows Media Player rather than Zune. If I have Zune open and press play, it will open WMP and upon pressing it again, will kick off the play command in Zune. I've checked the default programs in the control panel and have set Zune as default for all available but that hasn't changed anything. Has anyone run into this before? I'm a bit stumped as googling does not produce any relevant results. Thanks!

• Updating PHP on a Plesk managed Server

  I just updated PHP and MySQl on my VPS with the current Versions from Atomic Repo. Everything worked out fine so far. From console I get the new PHP 5.3: [root@server phpMyAdmin]# php -v PHP 5.3.16 (cli) (built: Aug 20 2012 11:18:05) Copyright (c) 1997-2012 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies with the ionCube PHP Loader v4.0.5, Copyright (c) 2002-2011, by ionCube Ltd. But through Apache I still get the old version (5.1.6). The server is running some old version of crappy Plesk Panel. That gives me the option to choose between Apache Modul, fCGI and CGI-BIN. Any hints, how to update apache, so it will use the new PHP Version? EDIT: I just needed to restart httpd (/etc/init.d/httpd restart)

• Volume display for laptop missing after driver update

  I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I just updated my audio drivers to be able to use Stereo Mix. It's a SigmaTel audio driver. Prior to the update, whenever I used the hardware buttons to update volume or mute/unmute speakers, it would always have a nice display like this one: But, for volume instead of screen brightness. The hardware buttons still work fortunately, but the volume display is gone. Is there a place I can configure this setting and re-enable it? The speaker icon in task tray was also disabled with the update, but I re-enabled that from the Control Panel. Is this simply gone with the driver update? Thanks for the help!

  I am currently using a Visual Basic script to determine how big the web folders are and what quota is decided for each folder. The quota is in no way a physical limit, just a value inserted by me to decide whether a user is using too much space or not. The script does the job quite neatly and sends an html file by mail on a regular basis. The problem is that it's such a hassle to insert new quotas since I have to fiddle around with the code. A central "control panel" with an overview and ability to insert new quotas would be more suitable. Is there any software that can do the following: Scan specified folder/subfolders Report the file size and present it in some sort of interface (could be a php/mysql solution) Ability to specify a quota and see the difference value ? It is really important that the quota handling is made simple so that some non-technician can handle this.

  I'm trying to install a web farm using Microsoft's Web Farm Framework 2.2. The server is Windows 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. I followed a tutorial. Installed WFF from Web Platform Installer. However, I'm missing some key features in the "Server Farm" panel in IIS. This is how my setup looks like However, just like in the tutorial, I want it like this How can I enable ALL the things, like Load Balancer, Health Test, Server Affinity etc? Thanks. • Ubuntu 10.10: getting appropiate monitor resolution for lcd hdtv

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 version, with Nvidia 9800 GT, installed 270.41.06 Nvidia drivers following this guide. I have a LG42LH30FR LCD TV connected with the dvi link - RGB PC input I'm able to get 1024x768 resolution without overscan (I can get 1080i = 1366x768 but there is a lot of hidden screen space to the right and I don't know what to do about it). I want to get full HD I can get full HD (1080p = 1920x1080) on Windows XP 64-bit with custom resolution created with Nvidia Control Panel, from reading over xorg.conf configurations it seems I need to add a certain modeling to the monitor configuration, but I don't know where to get the appropriate options for this task any suggestions?

• How to Restart Windows Update Service in Windows 7?

  I'm running into an issue with Windows Update on Windows 7 Professional. I am totally up to date in Windows Updates as of last week, but discovered this issue [today] during my Sunday morning PC maintenance ritual. In CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM & SECURITY - Windows Update, when I select "Check for Updates", I get a pop-up stating: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I've re-started several times, checked that the service hadn't been disabled at start up, and I've googled extensively on the topic - but have come up with nothing. I know there must be some way to start the service from the cmd line, and I would like to know how to get the service to start at boot. Please let me know if I have left any details out that may aid in formulating a response. Any of the community's excellent insights would be greatly appreciated!

• Domain pointing to wrong subscription in Plesk 10

  I recently moved a domain name in the Plesk 10 control panel from one subscription to another. DNS is managed by another server so there is no change in DNS at all. The IP address is shared and remains the same so there is really no need for a DNS change. But the domain is still managed by its former subscription (where it should have been removed from) and is pointing to exactly the same folder as in the past, even when is not in the list of domains there. Subsequently, the new subscription do not have the domain under its control. Even this domain is in list of domains here and points to another folder.

• Color Calibrate Dual Monitor XP SP2

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• ASP.NET - Call required field validator before AJAX modalpopup, client side

  I have an ASP.NET/C# application. The user fills out a form with required fields, then clicks a submit button. An AJAX popup message is then displayed, and if they confirm, their information is posted back to the server. The problem is that the AJAX popup is fired BEFORE the req validator. I need to interrupt this and run the req validator, and then if successful show the popup. I know the req validator is working, because if you cancel the popup message, the req text is shown next to the fields.   Is there a way to change the desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition? I wanted to do that on my new netbook, just to find out that there is no "Customize" option in the control panel. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so... Update: With your help I found two programs that are able to bypass Microsoft's limitations: Starter Wallpaper Changer (Thanks to Sopan and javier. • Windows 8 doesn't automatically join Wi-Fi network if Ethernet connection is active

  In Windows 7, my laptop would automatically join both an Ethernet network and the Wi-Fi network in my house (both going through the same router). In Windows 8, if the Ethernet connection is present, it doesn't join the Wi-Fi network at all. The reason I noticed this is that if Wi-Fi isn't active, I don't see my AirPlay speakers. My wireless printer is also unavailable until I manually connect to Wi-Fi. To recap: When I turn on my computer and it's connected to Ethernet, this is what my Network Connections control panel looks like: After I manually join my Wi-Fi network, it looks like this: I would prefer for it to join both networks automatically on startup, the way it did in Windows 7. Is there a way to make this happen?

• Homegroup and NTFS permissions

  I'm running a copy of Windows 7 as a "server" at my home. I have several file shares that I want to make available to specific users only. I've modified the NTFS permissions to only allow these users to access their respective shares. However, while a locally logged on user can access the actual folders just fine, over the network the remote access is authenticating as HomeGroupUser$ rather than the actual user in question, as shown by the Computer Management panel for shares. I do have matching user accounts (i.e. my username locally is abc and a parallel account with username abc and the same password exists on the server machine). I don't want to disable homegroup because there are other shares where homegroup authentication would be desirable, especially for some people where they don't have a parallel account. Is there a way to get the system to authenticate first by matching username, and then by homegroup authentication if there's no matching user?

• Locking down a server for shared internet hosting.

  Basically I control several servers and I only host either static websites or scripts which I have designed, so I trust them up to a point. However, I have a few customers who want to start using scripts such as Wordpress or many others - and they want full control over their account. I have started to do the basics - like on php.ini, I have locked it down and restricted commands such as proc, however, there is obviously a lot more I can do. right now, using NTFS permissions, I am trying to lock down the server by running Application Pools and individual sites in their own user, however I feel like I am hitting brick walls... (My old question on Server Fault). At the moment, the only route I can think of is either to implement an off the shelf control panel - which will be expensive and quite frankly, over the top, or look at the Microsoft guide - which is really for an entire infrastructure, not for someone who just wants to lock down a few servers. Does anyone have any guides that can put me on the correct path?

• Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Avoiding spam filters on my CentOS 5.5 64bit server?

  I run a social network on my web server, with about 15,000 members right now. My administration section let's me Mass Email all my users. Currently it uses the built in PHP mail function. What is the best way to congfigure my server to bypass spam? Can I install anything on the server? Or should I just make the social network use SMTP? The admin panel lets me choose SMTP or built-in mail function. I'm not to familiar with mailing from servers, as I usually use Aweber for my mailing, but I cannot use Aweber for this as they will not let me just import 15,000 emails. Let me know, thanks.

• Creative software leftovers - ASIO error message

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?

• Sound does not play when locking WinXP

  If I press the Windows-L combination to lock my PC the "Windows Logoff" sound does not play. It used to but at some point it stopped. I installed only trustworthy apps on my system and it is pretty clean so I don't think it is a virus. I checked the sounds in the control panel and "Windows Logoff" is set. Is there a sound associated with the key combination? Perhaps something in the registry? Any help is appreciated.

  IIS7 was turned off on my Windows 7 system, Under control panel services and applications no web publishing appears. Have Apache, et. al. installed with Wampserver. Yet when I try to access the local server astill get directed to IIS7 welcome page. After turning off IIS7 restarted computer, no help, eliminated history, no help, deleted IIS7 folders, no help. It is hiding somewhere and I can not find it. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Ed

• Need a solution to stop students from rotating screen on laptops with intel graphics

  We have some students who have figured out how to rotate the screen using either the hotkey combination or right click context menu. It's easy to fix but it's time consuming because no matter how many times I tell people how to fix it there's always someone that will come up to me. Now I need two things. First, is there a way to disable screen rotation? Second, I need a script to reset the screen resolution to normal on logon and logoff. The solutions need to be able to be deployed from a Win2003 server to WinXP clients. I have way too many computers to go through by hand to uncheck enable hot keys on the intel control panel.

  So, I can't use telnet to connect to any server but it works fine from a different computer. It just says it can't connect. I tried the following things: Disable firewall and AV protection. (Basically, there was no security feature left online) Telnet is set to "Trusted" in my AV protection. (Kaspersky Internet Security 2011) Using Putty to telnet, but apparently Putty's connection is also inhibited. (Says it can't connect to host) Disabling the telnet client in Control Panel and then re-enabling it. (Windows 7 Ultimate) hosts file is clean. Checked for nasties using MBAM and KIS 2011 as well as going though my HijackThis logs, nothing found. I can connect to the same machines/servers through the web browser, ping, tracert, etc. Only telnet seems to be blocked. Any other thoughts?

• Adjusting color on one monitor in Nvidia Surround

  I'm currently running three 2560x1440 screens using Nvidia Surround. Two monitors are Yamakasi Catleaps (cheap Korean jobs) and the third is the Achievia Shimian (also Korean). The Catleaps have great color reproduction, however the Shimian is exceptionally blue tinted. With normal monitors the required correction would require minimal effort to accomplish. But these Korean monitors do not have hardware controls to do it. For those who are unfamiliar, Nvidia Surround basically takes all three monitors and makes one big "monitor" out of all of them (Xinerama for GNU/Linux folk), at a resolution of 7680x1440 in my situation. Therefore, adjusting the color profile in the Nvidia control panel changes the settings for ALL of the monitors simultaneously. Thus, I am looking for some software to adjust the Shimian (perhaps by just selecting the pixels that that monitor encompasses). Does anyone know of such a program?
