  • Migrating Spring to Java EE 6 Article Series at OTN - Part 3

    - by arungupta
The spring season is characterized by migration of birds, whales, butterflies, frogs, and other animals for different reasons. If you use Spring framework and are interested in migrating to a standards-based Java EE platform, for whatever reason, then we have a solution for you. David Heffelfinger's, a renowned author and an ardent Java EE fan, has published third part of Spring to Java EE migration series at OTN. The article series takes a typical Spring application and shows how to migrate it to Java EE 6 using NetBeans. This new part builds upon part 1 and part 2 and also compares the generated WAR files and LoC in XML configuration in the two environments. There is an interesting discussion on Why Java EE 6 over Spring ? as well.

  • Did you know you can shrink a transaction log even when log shipping?

    - by simonsabin
David's posted a great post on shrinking the transaction log and log shipping. Log shipping and shrinking transaction logs Unlike shrinking the data file shrinking the transaction log isn't a bad thing, IF you don't need the log to be that size. I've seen many systems that shrink the log because it has grown only for it to grow the next day to the same size becuase of an overnight operation. To reduce the growth of the transaction log you need to do one or more of the following, 1.Back it up more frequently2.Change to simple recovery model3.Use minimally logged operations4.Keep transactions short and small5.Break large transactions into smaller transactions6.If using replication ensure that your backup of the replication topology is frequent enough

  • Choices in Architecture, Design, Algorithms, Data Structures for effective RDF Reasoning and Querying in a Big Data Environment [on hold]

    - by user2891213
As part of my academic project I would like to know what choices in Architecture, Design, Algorithms, Data Structures do we need in order to provide effective and efficient RDF Reasoning and Querying in a Big Data Environment. Basically I want to get info regarding below points: What are the Systems and Software to get appropriate Architecture? What kind of API layer(s) would we need on top of the Big Data stores, to make this possible? The Indexing structures we will need. The appropriate Algorithms, and appropriate Algorithms for Query Planning across Big Data stores. The Performance Analysis and Cost Models we will need to justify the design decisions we have made along the way. Can anyone please provide pointers.. Thanks, David

  • How to run/test JavaScript? [closed]

    - by user702
I'm reading David Flanagan's "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th ed". It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

  • Yet another Java EE 6 book

    - by alexismp
We have a new Java EE 6 book in store! This one from Packt Publishing is called "Java EE 6 Development with NetBeans 7" by David Heffelfinger who is also author of Java EE 5 and GlassFish books. This book holds a step-by-step book documention all of the Java EE 6 features and APIs (including CDI) using the IDE with the best Java EE out-of-the-box experience : NetBeans 7. It uses GlassFish as the default container and PrimeFaces as a JSF component suite. We've covered several Java EE and GlassFish books before and I can't help but think that given writing books never helped authors retire early, having so many good books on Java EE 6 says something about its success among developers.

  • Difference between '\n' and '\r\n'

    - by sukhbir
Yes yes, I am aware that '\n' writes a newline in UNIX while for Windows there is the two character sequence: '\r\n'. All this is very nice in theory, but my question is why? Why the carriage return character is extra in Windows? If UNIX can do it in \n why does it take Windows two characters to do this? I am reading David Beazley's Python book and he says: For example, on Windows, writing the character '\n' actually outputs the two- character sequence '\r\n' (and when reading the file back, '\r\n' is translated back into a single '\n' character). Why the extra effort? I will be honest. I have known the difference for a long time but have never bothered to ask WHY. I hope that is answered today. Thanks for your time.

Have reduced system to minimum; monitor keyboard mouse only. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance, David D

  • Use an Ubuntu Live CD to Securely Wipe Your PC’s Hard Drive

    - by Trevor Bekolay
Deleting files or quickly formatting a drive isn’t enough for sensitive personal information. We’ll show you how to get rid of it for good using a Ubuntu Live CD. When you delete a file in Windows, Ubuntu, or any other operating system, it doesn’t actually destroy the data stored on your hard drive, it just marks that data as “deleted.” If you overwrite it later, then that data is generally unrecoverable, but if the operating system don’t happen to overwrite it, then your data is still stored on your hard drive, recoverable by anyone who has the right software. By securely delete files or entire hard drives, your data will be gone for good. Note: Modern hard drives are extremely sophisticated, as are the experts who recover data for a living. There is no guarantee that the methods covered in this article will make your data completely unrecoverable; however, they will make your data unrecoverable to the majority of recovery methods, and all methods that are readily available to the general public. Shred individual files Most of the data stored on your hard drive is harmless, and doesn’t reveal anything about you. If there are just a few files that you know you don’t want someone else to see, then the easiest way to get rid of them is a built-in Linux utility called shred. Open a terminal window by clicking on Applications at the top-left of the screen, then expanding the Accessories menu and clicking on Terminal. Navigate to the file that you want to delete using cd to change directories and ls to list the files and folders in the current directory. As an example, we’ve got a file called BankInfo.txt on a Windows NTFS-formatted hard drive. We want to delete it securely, so we’ll call shred by entering the following in the terminal window: shred <file> which is, in our example: shred BankInfo.txt Notice that our BankInfo.txt file still exists, even though we’ve shredded it. A quick look at the contents of BankInfo.txt make it obvious that the file has indeed been securely overwritten. We can use some command-line arguments to make shred delete the file from the hard drive as well. We can also be extra-careful about the shredding process by upping the number of times shred overwrites the original file. To do this, in the terminal, type in: shred –remove –iterations=<num> <file> By default, shred overwrites the file 25 times. We’ll double this, giving us the following command: shred –remove –iterations=50 BankInfo.txt BankInfo.txt has now been securely wiped on the physical disk, and also no longer shows up in the directory listing. Repeat this process for any sensitive files on your hard drive! Wipe entire hard drives If you’re disposing of an old hard drive, or giving it to someone else, then you might instead want to wipe your entire hard drive. shred can be invoked on hard drives, but on modern file systems, the shred process may be reversible. We’ll use the program wipe to securely delete all of the data on a hard drive. Unlike shred, wipe is not included in Ubuntu by default, so we have to install it. Open up the Synaptic Package Manager by clicking on System in the top-left corner of the screen, then expanding the Administration folder and clicking on Synaptic Package Manager. wipe is part of the Universe repository, which is not enabled by default. We’ll enable it by clicking on Settings > Repositories in the Synaptic Package Manager window. Check the checkbox next to “Community-maintained Open Source software (universe)”. Click Close. You’ll need to reload Synaptic’s package list. Click on the Reload button in the main Synaptic Package Manager window. Once the package list has been reloaded, the text over the search field will change to “Rebuilding search index”. Wait until it reads “Quick search,” and then type “wipe” into the search field. The wipe package should come up, along with some other packages that perform similar functions. Click on the checkbox to the left of the label “wipe” and select “Mark for Installation”. Click on the Apply button to start the installation process. Click the Apply button on the Summary window that pops up. Once the installation is done, click the Close button and close the Synaptic Package Manager window. Open a terminal window by clicking on Applications in the top-left of the screen, then Accessories > Terminal. You need to figure our the correct hard drive to wipe. If you wipe the wrong hard drive, that data will not be recoverable, so exercise caution! In the terminal window, type in: sudo fdisk -l A list of your hard drives will show up. A few factors will help you identify the right hard drive. One is the file system, found in the System column of  the list – Windows hard drives are usually formatted as NTFS (which shows up as HPFS/NTFS). Another good identifier is the size of the hard drive, which appears after its identifier (highlighted in the following screenshot). In our case, the hard drive we want to wipe is only around 1 GB large, and is formatted as NTFS. We make a note of the label found under the the Device column heading. If you have multiple partitions on this hard drive, then there will be more than one device in this list. The wipe developers recommend wiping each partition separately. To start the wiping process, type the following into the terminal: sudo wipe <device label> In our case, this is: sudo wipe /dev/sda1 Again, exercise caution – this is the point of no return! Your hard drive will be completely wiped. It may take some time to complete, depending on the size of the drive you’re wiping. Conclusion If you have sensitive information on your hard drive – and chances are you probably do – then it’s a good idea to securely delete sensitive files before you give away or dispose of your hard drive. The most secure way to delete your data is with a few swings of a hammer, but shred and wipe from a Ubuntu Live CD is a good alternative! • How to create StackedBarSeries with custom tooltip without losing standard colors

    - by Simon_Weaver
    I have a StackedBarSeries in Silverlight 4 charting (latest release). I have created a DataPointStyle called MyDataPointStyle for a custom tooltip. By itself this breaks the standard palette used for the different bars. I've applied a custom palette - as described in David Anson's blog to the chart. However when I have the DataPointStyle set for my SeriesDefinition objects it does not use this palette. I'm not sure what I'm missing - but David specifically says : ... it enables the use of DynamicResource (currently only supported by the WPF platform) to let users customize their DataPointStyle without inadvertently losing the default/custom Palette colors. (Note: A very popular request!) Unfortunately I'm inadvertently losing these colors - and I can't see why? <chartingToolkit:Chart.Palette> <dataviz:ResourceDictionaryCollection> <ResourceDictionary> <Style x:Key="DataPointStyle" TargetType="Control"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="Blue"/> </Style> </ResourceDictionary> <ResourceDictionary> <Style x:Key="DataPointStyle" TargetType="Control"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="Green"/> </Style> </ResourceDictionary> <ResourceDictionary> <Style x:Key="DataPointStyle" TargetType="Control"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="Red"/> </Style> </ResourceDictionary> </dataviz:ResourceDictionaryCollection> </chartingToolkit:Chart.Palette> <chartingToolkit:Chart.Series> <chartingToolkit:StackedBarSeries> <chartingToolkit:SeriesDefinition IndependentValueBinding="{Binding SKU}" DependentValueBinding="{Binding Qty}" DataPointStyle="{StaticResource MyDataPointStyle}" Title="Regular"/> <chartingToolkit:SeriesDefinition IndependentValueBinding="{Binding SKU}" DependentValueBinding="{Binding Qty}" DataPointStyle="{StaticResource MyDataPointStyle}" Title="FSP Orders"/> <chartingToolkit:StackedBarSeries.IndependentAxis> <chartingToolkit:CategoryAxis Title="SKU" Orientation="Y" FontStyle="Italic" AxisLabelStyle="{StaticResource LeftAxisStyle}"/> </chartingToolkit:StackedBarSeries.IndependentAxis> <chartingToolkit:StackedBarSeries.DependentAxis> <chartingToolkit:LinearAxis Orientation="X" ExtendRangeToOrigin="True" Minimum="0" ShowGridLines="True" /> </chartingToolkit:StackedBarSeries.DependentAxis> </chartingToolkit:StackedBarSeries > </chartingToolkit:Chart.Series> </chartingToolkit:Chart>

  • T4 template for NHibernate? - not Fuent NHibernate

    - by NathanD
Wondering if anyone knows of a set of T4 templates for generating C# POCO classes and also mapping XML files for NHibernate from a set of tables in a database. I saw that David Hayden has created T4 for generating FluentNH code based upon a DBML model, but I'm not quite ready to use FluentNH yet as there isn't even an official release yet (although I love the idea). Anyone know of any T4 templates for using plain NHibernate?

  • Should I allow sending complete structures when using PUT for updates in a REST API or not?

    - by dafmetal
I am designing a REST API and I wonder what the recommended way to handle updates to resources would be. More specifically, I would allow updates through a PUT on the resource, but what should I allow in the body of the PUT request? Always the complete structure of the resource? Always the subpart (that changed) of the structure of the resource? A combination of both? For example, take the resource http://example.org/api/v1/dogs/packs/p1. A GET on this resource would give the following: Request: GET http://example.org/api/v1/dogs/packs/p1 Accept: application/xml Response: <pack> <owner>David</owner> <dogs> <dog> <name>Woofer</name> <breed>Basset Hound</breed> </dog> <dog> <name>Mr. Bones</name> <breed>Basset Hound</breed> </dog> </dogs> </pack> Suppose I want to add a dog (Sniffers the Basset Hound) to the pack, would I support either: Request: PUT http://example.org/api/v1/dogs/packs/p1 <dog> <name>Sniffers</name> <breed>Basset Hound</breed> </dog> Response: HTTP/1.1 200 OK or Request: PUT http://example.org/api/v1/dogs/packs/p1 <pack> <owner>David</owner> <dogs> <dog> <name>Woofer</name> <breed>Basset Hound</breed> </dog> <dog> <name>Mr. Bones</name> <breed>Basset Hound</breed> </dog> <dog> <name>Sniffers</name> <breed>Basset Hound</breed> </dog> </dogs> </pack> Response: HTTP/1.1 200 OK or both? If supporting updates through subsections of the structure is recommended, how would I handle deletes (such as when a dog dies)? Through query parameters?
