  If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. • Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

  I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

• Which shopping cart / ecommerce platform to choose?

  I need to build an ecommerce website within a tight budget and schedule. Of course, I have never done that before, so I have googled out what my solutions are and I have concluded that the following were not valid candidates anymore : Magento : Steep learning curve osCommerce : old, bad design, buggy and not user-friendly Zencart, CRE Loaded, CubeCart : based on osCommerce Virtuemart, uberCart, eCart : based on CMS (Joomal, Drupal, WordPress) that is not necessary for my use-case So I finally narrowed down my choices to these solutions : PrestaShop : easy-to-use, great templating engine (smarty) but many modules are not free buy yet indispensable OpenCart : security issues and not a great support from the main developer. See here and here. So, as you can see, I am a little bit confused and if you can help me choosing an easy-to-use, lightweight and cheap (not-necessarily free) ecommerce solution, I would really appreciate. By the way, I am a Java/Grails programmer but I am also familiar with PHP and .NET. (not with Python or Ruby/Rails) EDIT: It seems that this question is more appropriate for the Webmaster StackExchange site. So please move this question to where it belongs (I cannot do that) instead of downvoting it. • LIMBO fails on startup with Internal errors - invalid parameters received

  I installed LIMBO from the Humble Bundle V and as far as I am aware, this has wine packaged with it (I also installed the latest from the repo's in case is was because of that). However the game doesn't even start and fails with the message: Wine Program Error Internal errors - invalid parameters received. Is there a way to log the error or does anyone know why this happens? • 11.10 AMD64 alternate installer has broken packages?

  I'm installing Ubuntu 11.10 from the alternate install ISO because I need to use LVM. Unfortunately, at some point the installer fails because it can't install libpurple0 and ubuntu-desktop because they depend on libsasl2-modules but it's not installable somehow. It also has the same error for xserver-xorg-video-all but I think I could probably live without that one. Kind of annoying that this is broken, I'm guessing maybe if I had internet it would work but right now I'm on a campus network with a captive portal so I can't actually get a network connection without using a browser to log in. Just thought someone should know or maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm going to try installing 11.04 alternate and then upgrading I guess.

• Nginx or Apache for a VPS?

  I consider myself to be an inexperienced user/administrator when it comes to running my VPS. I can get by with a few CLI commands, I can set up Webmin and I can set up Yum repos, but beyond the very basic stuff, I'm out of my depth. So far, I'm running Apache. I don't know it particularly well, but I can get by with editing httpd.conf if I'm told what to edit. I've heard good things about Nginx and that it's not as resource-hungry as Apache. I'd like to give it a go, but I can't find any information about its suitability for administrators like me, with little experience of sysadmin or web server config. Webmin now has support for Nginx, so getting it installed and running probably won't be too much of a problem. What I'm wondering is, from a site administrator perspective, is running Nginx as transparent as running Apache? IE, at the moment, I can just throw up Wordpress and Drupal sites without having much to worry about or having to make any config changes to Apache. Would Nginx be as transparent?

• LSP vs OCP / Liskov Substitution VS Open Close

  I am trying to understand the SOLID principles of OOP and I've come to the conclusion that LSP and OCP have some similarities (if not to say more). the open/closed principle states "software entities (classes, modules, functions, etc.) should be open for extension, but closed for modification". LSP in simple words states that any instance of Foo can be replaced with any instance of Bar which is derived from Foo and the program will work the same very way. I'm not a pro OOP programmer, but it seems to me that LSP is only possible if Bar, derived from Foo does not change anything in it but only extends it. That means that in particular program LSP is true only when OCP is true and OCP is true only if LSP is true. That means that they are equal. Correct me if I'm wrong. I really want to understand these ideas. Great thanks for an answer.

  I have been programming for a couple of years and have often found myself at a dilemma. There are two solutions - one is simple one i.e. simple approach, easier to understand and maintain. It involves some redundancy, some extra work (extra IO, extra processing) and therefore is not the most optimal solution. but other uses a complex approach,difficult to implement, often involving interaction between lot of modules and is a performance efficient solution. Which solution should I strive for when I do not have hard performance SLA to meet and even the simple solution can meet the performance SLA? I have felt disdain among my fellow developers for simple solution. Is it good practice to come up with most optimal complex solution if your performance SLA can be met by a simple solution?

  I was having problems with sound (mono only output), so following advice from another askubuntu question I made some edits in /etc/pulse/default.pa After rebooting I had no sound at all. So I deleted /etc/pulse/default.pa entirely and tried another reboot. I did not backup the file (stupid, I know). How to come back to working config? edit: I tried: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio (reboot) sudo apt-get install pulseaudio (reboot) It's still not working. The file /etc/pulse/default.pa is missing. Here's what pulseaudio and pacmd commands show: $ pulseaudio E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup without any loaded modules, refusing to work. $ pacmd No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.

• Entry / JR Php Programmer - What do I learn next?

  I got very interested in programming toward the end of college. Took a few classes, but learned most everything on my own via books and such. Its mostly been Php and MySQL. Right out of school, I got a job working at a company for 2 years (web media) and ended up learning a lot of stuff and programming some things for them. I am no longer at that company but I am looking for my next steps as a programmer. I really enjoy Web Development and Php and MySQL seems to be my thing. Basically, I know how to do CRUD operations, i am mediocre at OOP and still have more to learn, I know HTML and CSS quite well, I know my way around a Unix terminal and can access MySQL through it and set up cron jobs and such. I know some basic Javascript. Whats a good next step? I don't anything about 3rd party services, PDO, APIs (twitter, facebook, etc), Drupal / Joomla, Unit Testing, E-Commerce, PECL, PEAR ....in other words A LOT I get easily overwhelmed by the amount of stuff there is to learn, so I'm sort of trying to find a path. Right now, I'm digging into OOP more, as that seems like a good conceptual first-step. Any suggestions?

  I would like my users to enter http://mywebsite.com/the-name-of-my-post and have the following execute: http://mywebsite.com/Default.aspx#&&the-name-of-my-post ...which is what the ScriptManager generates at runtime. I have created an ASP.NET site to replace a Wordpress site that creates "permalinks". This site was around for about 2 years so there are lots of bookmarks and references to these "permalinks" on the search engines etc. Also are there any modules I have to include in my website to get this to work? Is there any configuration that I have to ask my hosting company to make so that this works?

• problem using pydoc in python

  I'm using pydoc in python 2.7.3 to generate documentation for a file called PreProcessingAPI.py which contains a class called PreProcessingAPI In PreProcessingAPI.py, I have the following import in the beginning of the file: from __future__ import division from re import * from nltk.stem import porter The problem is, in the documentation generated by pydoc, nltk.stem.porter is shown as a Module. There is also a DATA heading with all sorts of variables I do not know about. Is there a way to avoid these variables and avoid showing nltk.stem.porter in the modules? I'm running the following command to generate documentation python pydoc.py -w PreProcessingAPI.py I've put the file pydoc.py in the directory containing my file.   I have a site with Apache 2.2.22 . I have enabled the mod-expires and mod-headers modules seemingly correctly: $ apachectl -t -D DUMP_MODULES … expires_module (shared) headers_module (shared) … Settings include: ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "access plus 10 minutes" ExpiresByType application/xml "access plus 1 minute" Checking the headers of requests, I see that max-age is set correctly both for the generic case and for xml files (which are auto-generated, but mostly static). I would like to have different expiries for xml files in a directory (e.g. /data), so http://site/data/sample.xml expires 24 hours later. I enter the following in data/.htaccess: ExpiresByType application/xml "access plus 24 hours" Header set Cache-control "max-age=86400, public" but it seems that apache ignores this. How can I ensure apache2 uses the .htaccess directives? I can provide further information if requested.

But I have another Ubuntu based distribution on my laptop (BackTrack linux), which is also 10.04, but it has the b43 driver installed and the overall performance is MUCH better. So I would like to install it on this OS too, but even google didn't help me. So my question is how to install the latest b43 driver on my Ubuntu?

• Version control and personal configuration file

  Our project uses a user-specific configuration file. This file is currently not in version control, since it is different for each user. The problem is, whenever a developer adds a new module that requires configuration, or changes the name of an existing modules, the other developers get errors because their private configuration files are not updated. To solve the problem, we thought of working with two configuration files: a default/global configuration file that will be in version control and will be updated regularly by each developer that adds a new module, and a private configuration file that will be kept out of version control and will contain only the user-specific changes. However, this still seems like an ad-hoc solution. Can you propose a better solution? What do the professionals do?
