• How can I boot into Windows from GRUB rescue WITHOUT CD drive?

  I took this from another website's string where i found no good answer This is my situation: installed Ubuntu without a CD (using A USB) dual boot installation (Windows 7+Ubuntu) didn't like the installation and decided to boot into Windows and delete the Linux partitions forgot to fix the mbr from within Windows Now, when I boot, I am stuck in the GRUB rescue limbo. Simple question: How can I boot into Windows from GRUB rescue? I cannot boot from CD because I don't have a CD drive, therefore the usual solutions (recovery CD etc) do not work. Any hints? Is there a way i can maybe do this through a USB? Thanks

• Installing drivers for an ATI 6950

  Is there any way to get ubuntu to recognise an ATI 6950? I have tried installing the proprietary ATI drivers, but these do not seem to work properly. It seems to screw up the gnome desktop, and starts booting into terminal. I'm somewhat of a linux newbie, so not really sure whats going wrong. I don't want to game on ubuntu, I just want it to recognise my dual monitor setup rather than mirroring the monitors, so any driver that does this is fine by me. It seems like the open source ATI radeon drivers will not support the 6950/6970 for some time, at least until kernel 2.6.38 is released. The card is also flashed with the 6970 firmware, not sure if this is important. I am running a 64 bit version of ubuntu, I installed ubuntu server 10.10, then installed gnome-desktop.

• Why doesn't Microsoft support virtualizing a Server OS on Windows 7?

  Microsoft doesn't support any server operating systems in Windows Virtual PC. Virtual Server 2005 doesn't run on Windows 7. Hyper-V is great, but I don't want to run Server 2008 as my main OS, and I love having Windows 7 run on the bare metal. I don't want to mess around with a dual boot. My only option to continue developing in Windows 7 with a virtual server environment on hand is VMWare or VirtualBox. Other members in my team use Hyper-V, and VHDs are common. I'd prefer to be able to use their VHDs, so that leaves me VirtualBox. Does anyone know if Microsoft is planning on bringing server virtualization back to the workstation?

• Stuck on busybox after a fresh install

  I installed 11.10 and was getting stuck on Busybox unless I type exit. After grabbing the latest updates it then didn't get stuck on busybox but instead on a black screen of nothingness. I've now reformatted and started again using the exit technique for the time being. I had a search here before posting and none of the answers gave much insight, other than it 'could be a gfx card driver issue'. I'm using new hardware that has no issues with Mint, Win7 or WinXp. BUT note, I'm not dual booting, its a complete fresh install formatting the entire drive. Any help is appreciated as I'd really like to get stuck into Ubuntu. Thanks in advance. -Luke

• Regular wireless dropouts on new lenovo T440s in Ubuntu 14.04

  Over the last 24 hours my wireless has dropped out regularly. I've tested to make sure it isn't my router (my phone and everyone in the house isn't having problems using the wifi). This is a brand-new installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and according to uname I'm running kernel 3.13.0-24-generic. Now, my laptop has an Intel 7260AC dual band wireless card and I've read that Ubuntu has been having trouble with these. I notice that at http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034398.htm There are some updated drivers for my kernel version. However I have no idea how to update the kernel to use these drivers instead so that I can see if this will fix it. Can anyone help? These dropouts are really annoying. EDIT: Upgrading to 3.14.6 did not help.

• Why can't mythtv backend see my HDHomeRun tuner?

  Ran a fresh install of Mythbuntu 12.04.1 32 bit. Went through the backend setup and was able to see my HDHomeRun Prime (HDHR3) device, scan, and detect channels. Cannot get to live TV on frontend. Backend log seems to indicate it's not detecting my tuner, even though I configured it in the setup.   I recently got a lapyy from Delhi univesity...its actually free of cost lol! ...but d thing is i have to return it after a year or 2...btw its confo are--amd 5350m,7 gb ram,amd radeon x2 graphics but installed with ubuntu 12.04, hp probuk the thing is i want to play games on it i searched on the net there are a few softwares like wine,playon linux ,etc etc but i m not able to play with them....actually m new to linux ...may be that could b the reason...or so...i hv also got an advice to dual booting windows or so..but i dont want to break GRUB..as m not so proffesional in such things and if something went wrong then i wuld have to pay to the universsity....for any mishap !!!! please help m guys i m in great trouble...virtual box is aloso an handy application to run win appllication...haha,,but i dont knoe how to use it or so..plzzz help me or support me ...i will be highly obliged

• Cannot boot Win7 after updating to ubuntu 11.10

  I had a dual boot setup on my system, with ubuntu 11.04 and Win7. Yesterday I updated ubuntu to 11.10. Now , I cannot seem to be able to load Win7 , I do see an entry for it on the boot menu. I select that entry and then the screen goes black , with everything coming to a standstill. I tried to wait for it to respond but nothing happened. I went through the forums and tried "grub-update" but when I do that , nothing really happens. I am not sure of this , but I get no output from grub for upto 10 minutes ( can grub-update be made verbose ) How can I fix this and get back to booting both OS'es properly ?

• Studying parallel programming

  I'm currently finishing my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and thinking a lot about which specialisation to choose in my Master's degree. One subject I'm particularly interested in is parallel programming. However, this topic does not seem to be a standard topic in Computer Science degrees, although it is something that is used more and more - new processors nowadays are usually dual or quad cores. So I was wandering: does anybody know a good study program in this field? I was mostly looking for it at universities in Germany, but they tend to combine the application side with some type of engineering or natural science. Thus, programs are more the "Computational Engineering" or "Computational Science" type, but I'm more interested in the Computer Science part of it, i.e. parallel programming, languages and compilers, algorithms and hardware.

• Slow on browsing web, but normal when using apt-get

  I have a problem with my fresh instalation of Ubuntu 11.10. The problem happen when i start up my browser and accessing website such google, askubuntu.com, facebook and other sites. frustate on the situation i try watch the progress in system monitor. the result from monitor shows that there is no data transfer when i try to accessing the page. firstly, i assume that it is the trouble from my ISP or my home connection. But it is not. When i try pinging google it shows transaction between my computer and the network but still null from browser. Then i tried to test the aptitude and it was work fine but still the browser won't recieve any packet from the internet. • WUBI install not completing on Dell Latitude D600 using 10.04 and 10.10

  While trying to install a dual boot from LiveCD, WUBI seems to go through all the steps correctly. It unpacks everything, reboots, starts to finalize the install, brings up the install slide show and seems to do everything necessary. The slide show disappears and what is left is what would normally be the background, however there is no login, no panels, no response to any input or keystrokes. Using 10.04 I had a mouse cursor (working) with 10.10, not even that. In 10.04 The only way to reboot is to shutdown using the power switch. When it reboots it goes through the "finalizing install" phase again. In 10.10 if I hit the power switch it brings up a shutdown menu that doesn't respond to the keyboard, but does shutdown when the 60 seconds expire.

• Can't activate "mirror display"

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell latitude E6410, I have a problem when using the VGA output I always have dual monitor and can't switch on the "mirror display" toggle under systems setting/displays. It's rather annoying when having to do presentation with a video projector. the option "mirror display" is in light grey and I can"t tick the box. • is there a bug with restart in edubuntu 12.04

  After a clean install of edubuntu 12.04 on an Acer AO531-h netbook, restart doesn't work. The process starts normally but just before it shuts down the netbook freezes and I have to force shut down. The command "sudo reboot" has the same problem. I have no issues with shut down, only with restart. I'm absolute beginner. Netbook specs: Acer, intel atom CPU N270 @1.60GHz, 1.05 GHz 0.98GB RAM Dual booting with windows xp. No problems with windows.

• Ubuntu start up screen broken

  I set up dual boot on my extra pc last night. first installed windows 7 and that went just fine. Downloaded Ubuntu and then did the MD5SUM and did not get a correct return that were listed on the site. I forgot to do that before I burnt the image to a disc. so I booted from the disc anyway to do the intergrity check and no errors were found. I then installed and everything seems fine except when it's booting, the purple screen is broken. should I try to redownload and re install?

• Set up Java path for terminal

  Trying to set up a path for the terminal. I already have Eclipse running great. Dual os between windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. However, I would prefer to run everything out of Ubuntu, just not very experienced and all the forums I have searched are not giving me the step by step answers I need to make this happen. • Cannot read from 2nd SATA data drive connected via SATA docking station

  Installed 10.10 this week on dual boot system. Everything else works fine but cannot read from 2nd SATA drive with all my data. Same drive works normally when booted to Windows XP. Interesting part is that I can see the drive in Ubuntu Disk Manager, can read all its attributes, can test it, shows up in Disk Manager, Storage Device Manager and Mount Manager, and can mount it, even change attributes; it appears healthy but does not show up in "Computer" or anywhere else that it can be accessed. The drive is connected via an external e-SATA docking station which is connected to a SATA port on the motherboard.

• Not mounting/finding 1TB NTFS drive

  I am having trouble with Ubuntu recognizing/finding/mounting one of my hard drives. I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I had Ubuntu 10.04 and all drives showed up under "Places" I could click on any of my Windows/NTFS drives and they would mount as they should. I have since updated to Ubuntu 10.10. One of my drives no longer shows up in "Places" or in Nautilus. I can open gparted and it is listed there, but if I try to click the mount button, I get an error. I am currently at work and can not post any screenshots or errors, but will happily do so later. I was just hoping that someone might be able to give me something to try when I get home. 250gig SATA hard drive (Windows7/NTFS) - recognized/mountable 200gig PATA hard drive (Ubuntu 10.10) - recognized (obviously) 1TB SATA hard drive (NTFS) - not recognized/won't mount Thanks!

  NetBeans and Eclipse provide tools, templates, wizards and code generators for building a Java EE 6 application. They both also allow a Java EE 6 Maven project to be created. In his recent screencast, Adam Bien explained how a Java EE 6 project can be easily created at command-line using Maven 3. The screencast walks through the process of creating the project using command-line. • No enable mobile broadband option

  I just migrated from Wubi to actual dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7 my machine is an Aspire 4750G. When I had (Wubi) Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit the network applet included the "enable mobile broadband" option. Now, I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32-bit) actual install as the 64-bit does not work. And my problem is that it does not show the "enable mobile broadband" option. This is so weird considering that I did not encounter the same problem in Wubi based installation.. Kindly help.. I have managed to connect to the internet via Sakis3G Script, still I find the previous method a lot more convenient..

• Incorrect key mappings in remote NX session

  I'm using the NoMachine provided NX client on Ubuntu 10.10 running on a laptop. I'm connecting to a FreeNX server that happens to be running on openSUSE. I'm having trouble with keys being incorrect in the remote session. The most noticable example is that when I press up cursor, the screen shot dialog appears instead. As far as I can gather easily, the cursor keys and delete are affected. It's worth noting that it doesn't display the same behaviour if I dual boot to Windows XP, or from a different machine using openSUSE. I'm not really sure where to begin looking. Any suggestions?

• If I release a program under GPL, do I have to continue to do so?

  Consider this scenario: I am developing a program FooSuite that uses a GPL-licenced library QuuxTools I release the program FooSuite 1.0 under GPL Later on I discover that, for some reason, I need to licence the program to someone on different terms. Hence: I remove the dependency on GPL via QuuxTools, by either... rewriting the program not to use this library any longer obtaining a different licence for QuuxTools (if it's dual-licenced; see PyQt) I release FooSuite 1.1 under a non-GPL licence. However, FooSuite 1.1 is still a derivative work from FooSuite 1.0. I understand that it's not legal for a stranger to do what I did, but am I myself - as the owner of FooSuite - free from this restriction?
