I am very much interested in learning more about cloud computing. This technology has been puzzling,tickling,increasing my curiosity and i just want to learn as much as i can about it. And through experience, i have learnt that practically doing can improve our knowledge and thirst to learn more. • Why are mainframes still around?

  It's a question you've probably asked or been asked several times. What's so great about Mainframes? The answer you've probably been given is "they are fast" "normal computers can't process as many 'transactions' per second as they do". Jeese, I mean it's not like Google is running a bunch of Mainframes and look how many transactions/sec they do! The question here really is "why?". When I ask this question to the mainframe devs I know, they can't answer, they simply restate "It's fast". With the advent of Cloud Computing, I can't imagine mainframes being able to compete both cost-wise and mindshare-wise (aren't all the Cobol devs going to retire at some point, or will offshore just pickup the slack?). And yet, I know a few companies that still pump out net-new Cobol/Mainframe apps, even for things we could do easily in say .NET and Java. Anyone have a real good answer as to why "The Mainframe is faster", or can point me to some good articles relating to the topic?

• Emulating Preference look/feel with LinearLayout

  I really like the look and feel of the Preference UI items and want to replicate that in my application. Basically I've got an Activity with a couple LinearLayouts set to be focusable. When they are focused, I want them to turn green (like Preferences do). Any idea how to apply that style to my LinearLayouts? Note: The LinearLayouts are essentially going to be clickable 'buttons' to launch a separate activity. They are NOT actual preferences or buttons, although they need to look/act similar to them.)

• How to interpret situations where Math.Acos() reports invalid input?

  Hey all. I'm computing the angle between two vectors, and sometimes Math.Acos() returns NaN when it's input is out of bounds (-1 input && input 1) for a cosine. What does that mean, exactly? Would someone be able to explain what's happening? Any help is appreciated! • Why are Asynchronous processes not called Synchronous?

  So I'm a little confused by this terminology. Everyone refers to "Asynchronous" computing as running different processes on seperate threads, which gives the illusion that these processes are running at the same time. This is not the definition of the word asynchronous. a·syn·chro·nous –adjective 1. not occurring at the same time. 2. (of a computer or other electrical machine) having each operation started only after the preceding operation is completed. What am I not understanding here?

• 3 DIV's - Center Middle and Others taking up rest of room

  I need to have 3 DIV's - you can see 3 colors in the above image. The middle DIV needs always be 960px and alls needs to be centered (you can see the 2 grey lines above). The other 2 DIV's need to take up all the other available space. If I zoom in and out of the page the red and yellow DIV's need to expand with the page while the middle green one remains centered. I've tried DIV solutions and Table solutions and I can't get it to fit. • Powershell - remote folder availability while counting files

  I´m trying to make a Powershell script that reports if there´s a file older than x minutes on remote folder. I make this: $strfolder = 'folder1 ..................' $pocet = (Get-ChildItem \\server1\edi1\folder1\*.* ) | where-object {($_.LastWriteTime -lt (Get-Date).AddDays(-0).AddHours(-0).AddMinutes(-20))} | Measure-Object if($pocet.count -eq 0){Write-Host $strfolder "OK" -foreground Green} else {Write-Host $strfolder "ERROR" -foreground Red} But there´s one huge problem. The folder is often unavailable for me bacause of the high load and I found out when there is no connection it doesn´t report an error but continues with zero in $pocet.count. It means it reports everything is ok when the folder is unavailable. I was thinking about using if(Test-Path..) but what about it became unavailable just after passing Test-Path? Does anyone has a solution please? Thank you in advance

• Free icons for mobile applications. Where?

  I know that in the sdk folders I can find some (not very well grouped, imho) icon. But, there is a site online specialized that let you download free icons useful for mobile app? Ie world flags, up, down... save, revert..., next..., play, stop..., etc. It would be more appriciated also if you can find these sets in many different colors, and in 2 or 3 sizes (32x32, 64x64, etc.). Have a nice day (ot. Especially my mom - her 62 birthday :-) Edit: those are all good sites, but to green-check the answer I need a small set with the common icons (I think moreabout 50-70 icons), in many different colors and in 2 or 3 different sizes (for lo-mid-hi definition devices). - If a so done site exists for free :-)

• Mathematica & J/Link: Memory Constraints?

  I am doing a computing-intensive benchmark using Mathematica and its J/Link Java interface. The benchmark grinds to a halt if a memory footprint of about 320 MB is reached, since this seems to be the limit and the garbage collector needs more and more time and will eventually fail. The Mathematica function ReinstallJava takes the argument command line. I tried to do ReinstallJava[CommandLine -> "java -Xmx2000m ..."] but Mathematica seems to ignore the -Xmx option completely. How can I set the -Xmx memory option for my java program? Where does the limit of 320 MB come from? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Partially parse C++ for a domain-specific language

  I would like to create a domain specific language as an augmented-C++ language. I will need mostly two types of contructs: Top-level constructs for specialized types or declarations In-code constructs, i.e. to add primitives to make functions calls or idiom easier The language will be used for scientific computing purposes, and will ultimately be translated into plain C++. C++ has been chosen as it seems to offer a good compromise between: ease of use, efficiency and availability of a wide range of libraries. A previous attempt using flex and bison failed due to the complexity of the C++ syntax. The existing parser can still fail on some constructs. So we want to start over, but on better bases. Do you know about similar projects? And if you attempted to do so, what tools would you use? What would be the main pitfalls? Would you have recommendations in term of syntax?

  Hi All, I have a text area field where i need to provide information about the word count when the user enters some text in the field. Length of the field is supposed to be 500 Characters. Initialy it must show min characters:100 | 0 of 500 // 0 of 500 must be in red color and once the user enters come character need to update the count as well. Once the user reaches the count say the min character 100, i need to display min characters:100 | 100 of 500 // 100 of 500 must be in green color. How can i do this?? is there any plugin for the same??? let me know your thoughts on this.

• How can I get the name of the Lead Owner in a Lead custom formula field?

  I've got an application that reads Lead records from Salesforce via the API and I want to link the Lead Owner field to an attribute in the application. The Lead Owner field doesn't up in the list of available fields but all the custom fields do. So, my first attempt at a solution was to create a custom field that displayed the Lead Owner name. In the SF formula editor, as far as I can tell, it doesn't display the actual data field but instead displays the ID string. Which is pretty meaningless in the context that I need it for. Is there a way that we can get at the data in the object that the ID string references? I have the RED BOX but need the GREEN BOX.

• IE incompatibility with JavaScript (surprised?)

  I am coding my website, and a friend of mine was helping me. This code does not work on IE 10 (Windows 7). I even tried the legacy modes and to no avail. Upon clicking on "services" for example, this code would work on FF or Chrome. But, not on IE.   I am looking for suitable replacement code that allows me replace the content inside of any HTML tag that has a certain class e.g. $class = "blah"; $content = "new content"; $html = '<div class="blah">hello world</div>'; // code to replace, $html now looks like: // <div class="blah">new content</div> Bare in mind that: It wont necessarily be a div, it could be <h2 class="blah"> The class can have more than one class and still needs to be replaced e.g. <div class="foo blah green">hello world</div> I am thinking regular expressions should be able to do this, if not I am open to other suggestions such as using the DOM class (although I would rather avoid this if possible because it has to be PHP4 compatible).

  Hi, I'm looking at the buttons used on twitter's home page, specifically the big orange 'signup' button. I see it is defined like this: <p id="signup-btn"> <a id="signup_submit" href="/signup"> <span>Sign Up</span> </a> </p> are they just using css to give the orange button appearance (which may just be a jpg), and also using css to specify the roll-over appearance (another jpg), and finally a third state for mouse-click (another jpg) to give the impression of a real clickable button? If that's how it works, what should I look for to do the same thing? • How do I create static instances of a class inside that class?

  I have a class Color that holds values for the red, green, and blue channels of a color. The class constructor lets you create a new color by specifying values for the three channels. However, for convenience, I would also like to have some "premade" colors available for the programmer. For example instead of having something like DrawRectangle(new Color(1, 0, 0)); you would be able to say DrawRectangle(Color.Red); Where Color.Red is an instance of Color that lives inside the Color class. How can I declare these instances of Color inside the Color class? If there is a name for this type of technique I'd like to know it as I had no idea what search terms to use when I was looking for help online.

  Hi, I would like to create a picture in PHP with GD composed by different other pictures. For example I have 6 pictures (or more) and I would like to create ONE picture who contain these different pictures. The Difficulty is that my final picture must have a fixed width and height (304x179), so if the different pictures are too big they must be cut. This is an example from IconFinder : This picture is composed by 6 images, but the 3rd bird (green) is cutted, and the 4, 5 and 6 are cutted in the bottom. • How much RAM used by Python dict or list?

  My problem: I am writing a simple Python tool to help me visualize my data as a function of many parameters. Each change in parameters involves a non-trivial amount of time, so I would like to cache each step's resulting imagery and supporting data in a dictionary. But then I worry that this dictionary could grow too large over time. Most of my data is in the form of Numpy arrays. My question: How would one go about computing the total number of bytes used by a Python dictionary. The dictionary itself may contain lists and other dictionaries, each of which contain data stored in Numpy arrays. Ideas?

• CSS+HTML: tds are overlapping

  On my web-site http://vfm-elita.com (it is not in English, sorry for that) - center and right columns are overlapping, please see screenshot for details: Between left and center columns you can see a "gap" with a green background - it is expected and good. But there are no any gap between center and right columns, instead they are overlapping. Issue exists in all known browsers There are no special formatting applied to columns. They are usual 'TD' columns, the only CSS modifier is width that is "250px" for left and right columns, and for center - it is "auto". Please advise how can I correct that error. Thanks a lot!
