• javascript toolkit for offline webapps

  hi all, we're building an survey webapp which will let the user to add new records to the survey when offline and will upload when the browser reconnects with the server. We've identified that this will need offline storage and hence google gears seems to be an obvious choice (we understand that adobe Flash has Offline Storage but not sure if that is the best way). I am aware of Dojo offline javascript toolkit which uses google gears for the underlying functionality. However, dojo offline is not part of the dojo toolkit after version 1.3. (currently dojo is 1.4.2). Google gears toolkit is currently frozen except for critical vulnerability fixes (it has not been updated almost for the last 1 yr) because they think that HTML 5 is the way to go ahead. Hence, we're looking for a higher abstraction on top of Google Gears engine TODAY, AND which will (in the future) switch the underlying engine to HTML5 if the browser supports HTML5 standards. We'd love to use Dojo but they have discontinued Dojo offline -- we'd prefer something that will be maintained for some time. Which are possible good strategies, JS toolkits/libraries to use for building this webapp ? Pls. advise.

  What is the practice to pass arguments from HTML to jQuery events function. For example getting id of row from db: <tr class="jq_killMe" id="thisItemId-id"> ... </tr> and jQuery: $(".jq_killMe").click(function () { var tmp = $(this).attr('id).split("-"); var id = tmp[0] // ... } What's the best practise, if I want to pass more than one argument? Is it better not to use jQuery? For example: <tr onclick="killMe('id')"> ... </tr> I didn't find the answer on my question, I will be glad even for links. Thanks. • Validate HAML from ActiveRecord: scope/controller/helpers for link_to etc?

  I like HAML. So much, in fact, that in my first Rails app, which is the usual blog/CMS thing, I want to render the body of my Page model using HAML. So here is app/views/pages/_body.html.haml: .entry-content= Haml::Engine.new(body, :format => :html5).render ...and it works (yay, recursion). What I'd like to do is validate the HAML in the body when creating or updating a Page. I can almost do that, but I'm stuck on the scope argument to render. I have this in app/models/page.rb: validates_each :body do |record, attr, value| begin Haml::Engine.new(value, :format => :html5).render(record) rescue Exception => e record.errors.add attr, "line #{(e.respond_to? :line) && e.line || 'unknown'}: #{e.message}" end end You can see I'm passing record, which is a Page, but even that doesn't have a controller, and in particular doesn't have any helpers like link_to, so as soon as a Page uses any of that it's going to fail to validate even when it would actually render just fine. So I guess I need a controller as scope for this, but accessing that from here in the model (where the validator is) is a big MVC no-no, and as such I don't think Rails gives me a way to do it. (I mean, I suppose I could stash a controller in some singleton somewhere or something, but... excuse me while I throw up.) What's the least ugly way to properly validate HAML in an ActiveRecord validator?

My choice of charset=utf=8 is based on a recommendation to make my pages readable on most browsers. But these choices may be wrong. • What is the purpose of the Html "no-js" class?

  I notice that in a lot of template engines, in the HTML5 Boilerplate, in various frameworks and in plain php sites there is the no-js class added onto the html element. Why is this done? Is there some sort of default browser behavior that reacts to this class? Why include it always? Does that not render the class itself obsolete, if there is no no-"no-js" case and html can be addressed directly? • On screen orientation loads again data with Async Task

  I make Android application with master/detail pattern. So I have ListActivity class which is FragmentActivity and ListFragment class which is Fragment It all works perfect, but when I change screen orientation it calls again AsyncTask and reload all data.   I have shared hosting through Justhost. To reduce cookies I set up a subdomain on my site and I thought maybe that was it so I added an .htaccess there also, but no luck. To reduce http requests I embedded some of webfonts and images in CSS (HTML5 BP stipulates not to compress images, and apparently '.woff' files are already compressed) so I thought maybe that was it and I spent all day separating and asynchronously loading those portions (via Modernizr.load) but that hasn't helped either...if anything it made it worse due to increasing http requests (I realize speed scores of async resources may be misleading). Researching this, it seems to be a fairly common issue but I haven't found an explanation/solution. I don't think it is a MIME-type issue, I have quadruple checked (and thrice edited) my .htaccess files. My hosting company said they run Apache 2.2.22 and I have looked at everything I can find. What gives?

Does anybody have any good suggestions for a free web hosting service where I can upload simple HTML/CSS & JavaScript experiments? I don't have large bandwidth needs, nor do I need a WYSIWYG editor.
