  You probably noticed, there’s a mass migration going on from online desktop/laptop usage to smartphone/tablet usage.  It’s an indicator of how we live our lives in the modern world: always on the go, with no intention of being disconnected while out there. Consequently, paid as it relates to mobile advertising is taking the social spotlight. eMarketer estimated that in 2013, US adults would spend about 2 hours, 21 minutes a day on mobile, not counting talking time. More people in the world own smartphones than own toothbrushes (bad news I suppose if you’re marketing toothpaste). They’re using those mobile devices to access social networks, consuming at least 17% of their mobile time on them. Frankly, you don’t need a deep dive into mobile usage stats to know what’s going on. Just look around you in any store, venue or coffee shop. It’s really obvious…our mobile devices are now where we “are,” so that’s where marketers can increasingly reach us. And it’s a smart place for them to do just that. Mobile devices can be viewed more and more as shopping facilitators. Usually when someone is on mobile, they are not in passive research mode. They are likely standing near a store or in front of a product, using their mobile to seek reassurance that buying that product is the right move. They are the hottest of hot prospects. Consider that 4 out of 5 consumers use smartphones to shop, 52% of Americans use mobile devices for in-store for research, 70% of mobile searches lead to online action inside of an hour, and people that find you on mobile convert at almost 3x the rate as those that find you on desktop or laptop. But what are marketers doing? Enter statistics from Mary Meeker’s latest State of the Internet report. Common sense says you buy advertising where people are spending their eyeball time, right? But while mobile is 20% of media use and rising, the ad spend there is 4%. Conversely, while print usage is at 5% and falling, ad spend there is 19%. We all love nostalgia, but come on. There are reasons marketing dollar migration to mobile has not matched user migration, including the availability of mobile ad products and the ability to measure user response to mobile ads. But interesting things are happening now. First came Facebook’s mobile ad, which let app developers pay to get potential downloads. Then their mobile ad network was announced at F8, allowing marketers to target users across non-Facebook apps while leveraging the wealth of diverse data Facebook has on those users, a big deal since Nielsen has pointed out mobile apps make up 89% of the media time spent on mobile. Twitter has a similar play in motion with their MoPub acquisition. And now mobile deeplinks have arrived, which can take users straight to sub-pages of mobile apps for a faster, more direct shopper/researcher user experience. The sooner the gratification, the smoother and faster the conversion. To be clear, growth in mobile ad spending is well underway. After posting $13.1 billion in 2013, Gartner expects global mobile ad spending to reach $18 billion this year, then go to $41.9 billion by 2017. Cheap smartphones and data plans are spreading worldwide, further fueling the shift to mobile. Mobile usage in India alone should grow 400% by 2018. And, of course, there’s the famous statistic that mobile should overtake desktop Internet usage this year. How can we as marketers mess up this opportunity? Two ways. We could position ourselves in perpetual “catch-up” mode and keep spending ad dollars where the public used to be. And we could annoy mobile users with horrid old-school marketing practices. Two-thirds of users told Forrester they think interruptive in-app ads are more annoying than TV ads. Make sure your brand’s social marketing technology platform is delivering a crystal clear picture of your social connections so the mobile touch point is highly relevant, mobile optimized, and delivering real value and satisfying experiences. Today Oracle announced its first major knowledge management release since its acquisition of InQuira: Oracle Knowledge 8.5. We’ve put a massively-upgraded supersuit on our KM solution because we still have bad guys to fight. And we are very proud to say that we went way beyond our original plans. • It’s official – Red Gate is a great place to work!

  At a glittering award ceremony last week, we found out that we’re officially the 14th best small company to work for in the whole of the UK! This is no mean feat, considering that about 1,000 companies enter the Sunday Times Top 100 best companies awards each year. Most of these are in the small companies category too. It's the fourth year in a row for us to be in the Top 100 list and we're tickled pink because the results are based on employee opinion. We’re particularly proud to be the best small company in Cambridge (in the whole of East Anglia, in fact) and the best small software development company in the entire UK. So how does it all work? Well, 90% of us took the time to answer over 70 questions on categories such as management, benefits, wellbeing, leadership, giving something back and what we think of Red Gate as a whole. It makes you think about every part of day to day working life and how you feel about it. Do you slightly or strongly agree or disagree that your manager motivates your to do your best every day, or that you have confidence in Red Gate's leaders, or that you’re not spending too much time working? It's great to see that we had one of the best scores in the country for the question "Do you think your company takes advantage of you?" We got particularly high scores for management, wellbeing and for giving something back too. A few of us got dressed up and headed to London for the awards; very excited about where we’d place but slightly nervous about having to get up on stage. There was a last minute hic up with a bow tie but the Managing Editor of the Sunday Times kindly stepped in to offer his assistance just before we had our official photo taken. We were nominated for two Special Recognition Awards. Despite not bringing them home this year, we're very proud to be nominated as there are only three nominations in each category. First we were up for the Training and Development award. Best Companies loved that we get together at lunchtimes to teach each other photography, cookery and French, as well as our book clubs and techie talks. And of course they liked our opportunities to go on training courses and to jet off to international conferences. Our other nomination was for the Wellbeing award. Best Companies loved our free food (and let’s face it, so do we). Porridge or bacon sandwiches for breakfast, a three course hot dinner, and free fruit and cereals all day long. If all that has an affect on the waistline then there are plenty of sporty activities for us all to get involved in, such as yoga, running or squash. Or if that’s not your thing then a relaxing massage helps us all to unwind every few months or so. The awards were hosted by news presenter Kate Silverton. She gave us a special mention during the ceremony for having great customer engagement as well as employee engagement, after we told her about Rodney Landrum (a Friend of Red Gate) tattooing our logo on his arm. We showed off our customised dinner jacket (thanks to Dom from Usability) with a flashing Red Gate logo on the back and she seemed suitability impressed. Back in the office the next day, we popped open the champagne and raised a glass to our success. • Dell PowerEdge R410: System asks to press F1 or F2

  We just installed an option card (PERC 6/i) into a brand-new Dell PowerEdge R410 and now the system does no unattended startup but instead asks me to press F1 to continue or F2 to enter system setup after printing the following message on the console: Fan 4 speed may change depending on system configuration and option card install. How do I make the system ignore this "problem" or whatever that is? This system is going to be installed at a remote data center and needs to be able to restart unattended. I do not want to ignore errors completely to not get endless restart loops in case of errors.

• MacBook Pro - 7200 vs 5400 rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 7200 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 5400 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? My plan is to pass all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN provided by the router, which should ensure that the connection stays alive and only passes traffic over that protocol. I'm normally quite a fan of Draytek routers, and their 2710n does seem to feature VPN dial-out but it lacks Gigabit ports (though I can make do with that if the VPN support is good enough). Has anyone got any suggestions or personal experience in a similar setup? I'm happy to consider anything that supports dd-wrt (as I believe that supports VPN-out, though I may be wrong). Bonus points for models available in the UK.

• Windows 7 and laptop overheating

  I am using ArchLinux 99% of my working time, and laptop has absolutely no heating problems. But when it comes to using Windows 7, laptop starts heating and one can clearly hear CPU fan working like crazy. I think it has something to do with CPU itself, because on Linux I can simply manipulate with CPU governors (eg. set it to ondemand), but I can't seem to find any similar software to do the same thing as if in Linux. • Forcing the from address when postfix relays over smtp

  I'm trying to get email reports from our AWS EC2 instances. We're using Exchange Online (part of Microsoft Online Services). I've setup a user account specifically for SMTP relaying, and I've setup Postfix to meet all the requirements to relay messages through this server. However, Exchange Online's SMTP server will reject messages unless the From address exactly matches the authentication address (the error message is 550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender). With careful configuration, I can setup my services to send as this user. But I'm not a huge fan of being careful - I'd rather have postfix force the issue. Is there a way to do this?

• Motherboard on, but nothing will start

  I'll try and be as clear as possible. Recently I purchased a barebones kit for my first attempt at a full PC assembly. I've gone through and connected all the parts correctly based on numerous examples that confirm everything is connected correctly. The motherboard and the video card are receiving power based on the fact that the motherboard's power LED is on and the video card has some LEDs on. Nothing else in the computer will come on when pressing the power button on the case. No fans, no hard drive, no CPU fan. Not even for a split second. I also receive no beeping noise from the speaker connected to the motherboard. I've also tried swapping the reset and power connectors from the front of the case to no luck.

• graphics-card makes sound-card produce a buzzing sound

  Recently I bought a new GPU: GeForce GTX 550 Ti, and after installing it I get a strange buzzing sound. It's not always there, just sometimes (mostly when I open some game, but sometimes also in browsers etc.). It's not a capacitor or a fan, as unplugging speakers from sound-card makes the 'bzzzzzzz' go away. However, muting windows doesn't mute this sound. I'm pretty sure it is fault of the new GPU, but how is this happening and can I fix it? Can it be a low power supply? I thought of buying a stronger unit, but as everything works, and computer doesn't shut down, I hesitate.

• Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• Windows 7 Standy/Hibernate Freeze/Lockup

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a MSI U100 Netbook which often experiences a lockup or freeze whilst hibernating or shutting down. I have a friend with an Asus netbook running Windows 7 who has experienced the same issue. This happens to me perhaps 1-2 times a week, and is frustrating as hell because it will just sit there running flat out (the fan goes to max after a while) until the battery dies if I don't notice it first. Just wondering if anyone has had any similar issues or might be able to point me in the right direction. The freeze occurs when the screen has faded to black. The HDD light flickers for a few moments then just sticks on solid. I haven't been able to isolate any apps which may be causing this either. It will be fine one standby, and lock up the next with no new apps open. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kyle

  I'm building a home office and looking for the ultimate desk. Lot's of resources about the great desk chairs, but very little on great modern desks. Requirements: $1000-$2000. Straight. No side cabinets. Attractive. Electric adjustable would be nice, but I haven't found very attractive looking one. • Acer aspire 5520 power light blinks no boot

  My laptop was working fine last night, I hibernated it and went to sleep. Got up, pressed the power button. The power light comes on for 4 seconds and the hdd light blinked a few times, then it turned off for a second then repeats the process. The only way to stop this process/power down is to remove the AC and take out the battery. It does not even reach a boot screen, nothing shows up on the screen, fan does not start. People on this forum has the same problem but they suggest to put the laptop in a oven and heat it (reflow). What could be the problem? Is there another solution other than a reflow? I dont feel like putting my motherboard in the oven.

• Consolidate SQL Server Reporting Services

  I've been a big fan of consolidating as many DB's to a few SQL servers for a while and I've had great success with it. However, I've never had to deal with SQL reporting services. Has anyone migrated SSRS from a bunch of random SQL servers into a consolidated SQL server? I don't exactly know a whole lot about SSRS which is part of the problem. To my knowlege, it's one DB per SSRS instance, so it sounds like i'd need to find a way of exporting data and merging it. Basically the process used to look like: Move DB from SQL Express to shared SQL server Change point in APP to point at new SQL server With reporting services, how do I move the reporting service compenent of the DB as well? I realize I may need to tweak the app, but my question is on the SQL side.

  I'm running ubuntu on my work notebook. While it's not a netbook, it is a relatively weak machine. So, even though I'm not a big fan of the ubuntu netbook interface, I would be willing to use it if it's lighter (on RAM and CPU) than the desktop version. I know there are some very light linux distros available out there, but I'd like to stick with ubuntu both for it's community and for the support I have available here at my workplace. So, is Ubuntu Netbook Remix lighter on system resources than Ubuntu Desktop?

• Limiting Sybase ASE 15 CPU usage on VM

  I've set up a single CPU Sybase ASE 15.7 test/hobby/experimentation system on a Debian Squeeze x64 KVM VM. I notice the CPU load goes to 100% and stays there. Definitely not a Sybase guru, only interested to see if some programs I'm running work on the database. Looking at Sybase docs it seems ASE detects the machine is idle and then takes over all processing just waiting for a connection (and if needed, doing some housekeeping apparently). Normally that would be fine but as it is running in a VM it's taking away processor resources other VMs could use - and the increased fan noise of the PC near my desk annoy me. I've tried to remedy this: set the "runnable process search count" parameter from DEFAULT (2000 IRC) to 3 in /opt/sybase/ASE-15_0/SYBASE.cfg from http://sybase.reygrobellet.com/tutorials/install_sybase_vb/standalone04_configure_oralin11#TOC-Configure-kernel I added this to my /etc/init.d/sybase startup script: echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space (though I don't think it'll make much difference) How can I tell Sybase to "behave" and not hog the processor - I don't mind reduced performance.

• setting visual bell to flash in iTerm

  Hi, I am using iTerm on OSX (leopard) to ssh to a linux machine. I run screen on the dev machine to save my work between sessions. I am not a big fan of audio bell and I don't like screen's default 'Wuff Wuff' bell (or any other little message shown at bottom of the page). What I like though is to have flash (foreground and blackground colors swapped for a fraction of a second) as my visual bell. I used to use PuTTY and it is as simple as ticking a checkbox but I can't find such an option in iTerm. My question is how can I set my visual bell to flash? The ideal answer would work with iTerm on local computer, iTerm sshed to a linux server, and iTerm sshed to a linux server and ran screen.
