• High level audio crossfading library for python

  I am looking for a high level audio library that supports crossfading for python (and that works in linux). In fact crossfading a song and saving it is about the only thing I need. I tried pyechonest but I find it really slow. Working with multiple songs at the same time is hard on memory too (I tried to crossfade about 10 songs in one, but I got out of memory errors and my script was using 1.4Gb of memory). So now I'm looking for something else that works with python. I have no idea if there exists anything like that, if not, are there good command line tools for this, I could write a wrapper for the tool.

• Appropriate high level language to deal with binary data

  Hi, I need to write a small tool that parses a textual input and generates some binary encoded data. I would prefer to stay away from C and the like, in favour of a higher level, (optionally) safer, more expressive and faster to develop language. My language of choice for this kind of tasks usually is Python, but for this case dealing with binary raw data can be problematic if one isn't very careful with the numbers being promoted to bignums, sign extensions and such. Ideally I would like to have records with named bitfields that are portable to be serialised in a consistent manner. (I know that there's a strong point in doing it in a language I already master, although it isn't optimal, but I think this could be a good opportunity to learn something new). Thanks.

• C# programmer - necessary to learn C/C++?

  Hey, I have been programming now for a couple of years. But never any low level language. I started off with some java and some VB. Then I went over to VB.NET and now for a while I have been writing C#. As you see, I have never written any low level language where I had to deal with memory management. Is this something I should do, like a route of passage that every programmer should go through? I am a bit keen on trying to perhaps writing in assembler directly. This would suit me personally good as I have 2 parents that have been writing assembler for ages. Is it necessary for a professional programmer these days to know how to manually manage memory?

  I have a simple SEO task. There's a City model and a Brand model, and I have to create 1st-level URLs for both (e.g. site.com/honda and site.com/boston). What's the preferred routing/controller combination to do this in Rails? • Windows equivalent of inb(), outb(), low level i/o

  I have some Linux code that monitors our hardware by collecting temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds, from the motherboard using inb(), outb(), inl(), etc. low level i/o functions. My challenge is to port that code over to run under Windows as a simple console app. But am puzzled in what functions Win32 (or .NET) provide that allow me permission to access direct memory mapped ports. I don't want to code a system driver either. My Windows tool preference is VS2008. (fyi) Is this possible?

  I'm using ruby on rails 2.3.8 and when I write the syntax shown below I get the "stack level too deep" error message. The model is called Announcement and the line of the error looks like this: Tag.find(category_id).announcements.published Where published is named_scope :published, :conditions => "announcements.state = 'published'" I use this named scope in many other places and it works fine. What am I doing wrong? (the relationship between Tag and Announcement model is ok because if I remove the ".published" method from that line it works just fine).

  I want to learn how to make levels using cocos2d and box2d (for iOS). I am talking about a 2d platformer such as Limbo or Braid or something like that. How can I design and build levels like this? I have seen Level Helper for cocos2d but its not free and I don't think it makes physic objects for box2d. How is this accomplished in real games? How to make camera move with character and so on. Any starting points would be much appreciated.

• Updating a module level shared dictionary

  Hi, A module level dictionary 'd' and is accessed by different threads/requests in a django web application. I need to update 'd' every minute with a new data and the process takes about 5 seconds. What could be best solution where I want the users to get either the old value or the new value of d and nothing in between. I can think of a solution where a temp dictionary is constructed with a new data and assigned to 'd' but not sure how this works! Appreciate your ideas. Thanks

For example, there is a several subjects doing a reaction time task during several days, and I need to compute mean reaction time for all subjects and all days, but not including the subject for whom the mean is computed. Class A{ private B b; } Class B{ private C c; } Class C{ private Long val; } assume these are the hibernate persistence classes i am not writing all annotations of mapping with database. now my problem is i want to retrieve results of Class A according to the value of Class C's val property. i tried to fetch it using, Criteria c = Restrictions.eq("b.c.val", value); List l = c.list; it shows could not resolve property. i searched and came to know criteria wont work up to this much depth. i don't want shift to HQL. any idea??

  The C++ standard mandates that all conforming implementations support the following two signatures for main: int main(); int main(int, char*[]); In case of the latter signature, would the addition of (top-level) const-ness break any language rules? For example: int main(const int argc, char** const argv); From my understanding, top-level const qualification doesn't affect the function's signature hash, so it should be legal as far as the specification is concerned. Also, did anyone ever encounter an implementation which rejected this type of modification?

  Today i installed Ubuntu 10.4 and Eclipse Galileo. Then I downloaded the Android SDK and tried to install all packages via the Android SDK Tools. But unfortunately, only the Target Levels 3, 4, 7 and 8 were available. API Level 5 and 6 are missing. Does anybody know the reason for this? I already did a Google search and there seems to be nobody with the same problem. I also tried to restart it and nothing happens, the API Levels are still missing.

  Ok I know little about SQL so bare with me... I'm trying to see if certain values exist in a third level table and I don't know how to go about it. Here is the scenario... I have a Accident table that holds accident information. It has 3 one-to-many child tables (Units, Occupants, NonMotorists). An each of those child tables have their own many-to-many child table (Alcohol). I need to be able to have some way of seeing if a range of values exists in a field in those Alcohol tables.   Hi all, I have a C++ library, which is used in both Linux and Windows. I want to enable the user to control the debug level (0 - no debug, 1 - only critical errors ... 5 - informative debug information). The debug log is printed to a text file. In Windows, I can do it using a registry value (DWORD DebugLevel). What can be a good replacement which works also for Linux? (Without 3rd party tools, for example Linux "registry").   I used to be visual basic 6 programmer, i was pleased with visual basic : it is high level language that do stuff fast,easy to learn, easy to do stuff in,you can drag and drop stuff to the form and write your code,it is simply amazing.however microsoft buried VB6 and pointed us to VB.NET which is so different that it is not the old VB anymore.I didn't like what microsoft did and would like to look somewhere AWAY from microsoft and from any other proprietary language . I would like to look into a similar language that is easy,cross platform (windows / Linux), object oriented, visual design, non proprietary and compile (for some guarding against reverse engineering). i am freelancer so the choice is entirely mine,i don't care about performance of programs, the time taken to develop a given programs is much more important. desktop / database / GUI /networking programming is what i am looking for. so any such language offered by our open source community ? thank you so much

  Hello. I am new to Android and mobile phones development. I want to develop an application that needs to have a total control over the "phone" of the smartphone, i.e. controlling all the communication of the GSM chip with the cellular system, accessing the SIM card identity that it sends (encrypted) to the cellular system, disabling the cellular antenna and resuming it back, and more of that kind... Can it be done with Android? Does the software (OS) have control over all of the phone components in a smartphone, or there are some parts that are done in the hardware level only? (I guess that the Android API won't enable me to do everything i want, but even theoretically is it possible if I recompile the OS after making the changes there?) Thanks!

• Mysql with innodb and serializable transaction does not (always) lock rows

  Hello, I have a transaction with a SELECT and possible INSERT. For concurrency reasons, I added FOR UPDATE to the SELECT. To prevent phantom rows, I'm using the SERIALIZABLE transaction isolation level. This all works fine when there are any rows in the table, but not if the table is empty. When the table is empty, the SELECT FOR UPDATE does not do any (exclusive) locking and a concurrent thread/process can issue the same SELECT FOR UPDATE without being locked. CREATE TABLE t ( id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY, display_order INT ) ENGINE = InnoDB; SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE; START TRANSACTION; SELECT COALESCE(MAX(display_order), 0) + 1 from t FOR UPDATE; .. This concept works as expected with SQL Server, but not with MySQL. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? EDIT Adding an index on display_order does not change the behavior.

• How would you rewrite/refactor this ?

  Old application that is used by 50-60.000 paying customers. Company is several hundred people big. Application has a lot of business critical code (30% of all code) written in classic asp. Application has a lot more .net code. Application has a COM+ bridge for enabling asp to "talk" to .net Organization lacks some/a lot knowledge on what is causing the 10-20% server-reset per day (might be due to COM+ ?) There is no red line through the application; no architecture, no real patterns etc. The application has been like this for at least 5 years. The asp code base is increasing, slowly but certainly. I have read refactoring stories and I have knowledge on why you some of the times should not re-write a system. I would love for the old asp code to vanish as well as the COM+ component. But the pain is that no one really knows what is going on inside the asp classic code and the attitude inside all the teams are "this is just how it is". Down the line, this causes a lot of other issues like recruiting, dev effeciency, business needs that cannot be met, scale etc. With these little facts, does that justify a re-write of the asp code and the removal of the COM+ component ? How would you go about it ?
