  • Agile methodologies. Is it a by-product of mind control techniques as NLP / Scientology?

    The more I read about contemporary methods combinging scrum, tdd and xp, the more I feel like I already seen the methods. I am not arguing that agile approach is much more progressive than older rigid structures like waterfall, what I am saying is that it seems to me that agile methodologies are ideal to be used as a nest for a brainwashing business. I read few articles which kept referring to authors which I checked afterwards and they call themselves - coaches, trainers (usual thing when NLP specialists are involved) with no apparent software development history. Also I met a guy who is a scrum faciltator (term widly used in relation to scientology) in a high profile company. I talked to him less than 5 min but I got complete feeling that he is either on drugs or he has been programmed by a powerful NLP specialist. The way to talk and his body movements witnessed he is not an average normal person (in terms of normal distribution :))... Please dont get me wrong. I am not a fun of conspiracy theories. But I had an experience with a member of church of scientology tried to invade a commercial firm and actually went half way through to very top in just 3 weeks. I saw his work. For now I have complete impression is that psycho manipulators are now invading IT industry through the convenient door of agile techniques. Anyone has the same feeling/thoughts?

  • Setting up padding for websites in mobile devices

    I had finished this website a while ago but something happened to it and I've now spent all day fixing it and getting it back from scratch as my backup wasn't correctly done. I don't quite understand what it's doing as I've done this technique on many other websites with no troubles, maybe I've looked at this website too long? Here is the website. I'm wanting to put some space on the left and right hand side, however I dont just have one container as I was needing the dark grey bar at 100% of the screen and always under the banner no matter where it was. So there are 4 "containing" divs that I want to have the space. I've placed soem CSS3 media queries in but now I'm getting a gap to the right. I was thinking it was because my background mages are going all the way across but they set at 100% so I'm just not understanding whats going on. It's somethign simple, I'm not seeing it right now..   • Is it bad practise to initialise fields outside of an explicit constructor

    So its monday and we are arguing about coding practises. The examples here are a litttle too simple, but the real deal has several constructors. In order to initialise the simple values (eg dates to their min value) I have moved the code out of the constructors and into the field definitions. public class ConstructorExample { string _string = "John"; } public class ConstructorExample2 { string _string; public ConstructorExample2() { _string = "John"; } } How should it be done by the book. I tend to be very case by case and so am maybe a little lax abotu this kind of thing. However i feel that accams razor tells me to move the initialisation out of multiple constructors. Of course I could always move this shared initialisation into a private method. The question is essentially ... is initialising fields where they are defined as opposed to the constructor bad in any way? The argument I am facing is one of error handling, but i do not feel it is relevant as there are no possible exceptions that won't be picked up at compile time.

  • jqtouch - panels appear on page, class="back" not working in Safari

    I'm trying to get a demo working that was used in J. Stark's webinar on Safari Books Online (still available for viewing). I think I've followed the code example correctly, but the class="back" objects used to return from the "blog", "contacts", "settings" and "about" panels do not work, though the correct address shows in the nav area at the base of the browser window when I hover the mouse over the respective link. The panels-- which should slide in and out when called by their respective class"arrow" elements-- appear on the main page, nor do they animate correctly. Browser is Safari 5.0.3(6533.19.4); jquery-1.3.2; jqtouch freshly downloaded from the jqt website. Obviously I'm missing something simple. Didn't want to impose on your server, so the URL for jqtouch.min.css points to a version on my server @ fastermac.net. There's something further amiss, I believe. On load, page still shows the elements that should be invisible until called by clicking class="arrow" elements. Animations not yet wiggling. Did get them to wiggle at one point, but "flip," for instance, landed then on a black page-- not the targeted panel. Probably something obvious, but I'm missing it after some considerable due diligence. Again, thanks for your note. Any further illumination would be sincerely appreciated.

    I am having some difficulties implementing Paypal buttons with backbone.js The problem is that the button is implemented in a script tag: <script src="paypal-button.min.js?merchant=YOUR_MERCHANT_ID" data-button="buynow" data-name="My product" data-amount="1.00"></script> which i cant run from Handlebars.js because the </script> tag is closing the handlebars <script> I cant use eval(), or i don't understand how i am supposed to do that with the . So there you have it. i am kind of stuck. I am out of ideas on how to implement this button with backbone.js the last resort is to ask the server to produce html pages with the script in them and then load them to the page. i am just refusing to believe that JavaScript has no way to take care of this. Please help. This question relates to another question i asked in this subject. Is it possible to use JavaScript inside handlebars.js template Thank you.

    I recently had this problem on a test: given a set of points m (all on the x-axis) and a set n of lines with endpoints [l, r] (again on the x-axis), find the minimum subset of n such that all points are covered by a line. Prove that your solution always finds the minimum subset. The algorithm I wrote for it was something to the effect of: (say lines are stored as arrays with the left endpoint in position 0 and the right in position 1) algorithm coverPoints(set[] m, set[][] n): chosenLines = [] while m is not empty: minX = min(m) bestLine = n[0] for i=1 to length of n: if n[i][0] <= m and n[i][1] > bestLine[1] then bestLine = n[i] add bestLine to chosenLines for i=0 to length of m: if m <= bestLine[1] then delete m[i] from m return chosenLines I'm just not sure if this always finds the minimum solution. It's a simple greedy algorithm so my gut tells me it won't, but one of my friends who is much better than me at this says that for this problem a greedy algorithm like this always finds the minimal solution. For proving mine always finds the minimal solution I did a very hand wavy proof by contradiction where I made an assumption that probably isn't true at all. I forget exactly what I did. If this isn't a minimal solution, is there a way to do it in less than something like O(n!) time? Thanks

    Hello, i get quite short code of algorithm in python, but i need to translate it to Java. I didnt find any program to do that, so i will really appreciate to help translating it. I learned python a very little to know the idea how algorithm work.     Let's say you've got a simple fixed-width layout that pulls a title from a MySQL database. CSS: #wrapper { width: 800px; } h1 { width: 100%; } HTML: <html> <body> <div id="wrapper"> <h1> $titleString </h1> </div> </body> </html> But the catch is, the length of the title string pulled from your MySQL database varies wildly. Sometimes it might be 10 characters, sometimes it might be 80. It's possible to establish a min & max character count. How, if at all possible, do I get the text-size of my <h1>$titleString</h1> to enlarge/decrease on-the-fly such that the string is only ever on one line and best fit to that line length? I've seen a lot of questions about resizing the div - but in my case the div must always be 100% (800px) and I want to best-fit the title. Obviously a maximum text-size value would have to be set so 5 character strings don't become gargantuan. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm only using PHP/MySQL/CSS on this page at the moment, but incorporation of another language is fine if it means I can solve the problem. The only thing I can think of is a bruteforce approach whereby through trial and error I establish acceptable string character count ranges matched with CSS em sizes, but that'd be a pretty ugly implementation from the code side.

    I want to write some code which takes any positive, even number (greater than 2) and gives me the smallest pair of primes that sum up to this number. I need this program to handle any integer up to 9 digits long. My aim is to make something that looks like this: Please enter a positive even integer ( greater than 2 ) : 10 The first primes adding : 3+7=10. Please enter a positive even integer ( greater than 2 ) : 160 The first primes adding : 3+157=160. Please enter a positive even integer ( greater than 2 ) : 18456 The first primes adding : 5+18451=18456. I don't want to use any library besides stdio.h. I don't want to use arrays, strings, or anything besides for the most basic toolbox: scanf, printf, for, while, do-while, if, else if, break, continue, and the basic operators (<,, ==, =+, !=, %, *, /, etc...). Please no other functions especially is_prime. I know how to limit the input to my needs so that it loops until given a valid entry. So now I'm trying to figure out the algorithm.   • Spring MessageSource not being used during validation

    I can't get my messages in messages.properties to be used during Spring validation of my form backing objects. app-config.xml: <bean id="messageSource" class="org.springframework.context.support.ResourceBundleMessageSource"> <property name="basename" value="messages" /> </bean> WEB-INF/classes/messages.properties: NotEmpty=This field should not be empty. Form Backing Object: ... @NotEmpty @Size(min=6, max=25) private String password; ... When I loop through all errors in the BindingResult and output the ObjectError's toString I get this: Field error in object 'settingsForm' on field 'password': rejected value []; codes [NotEmpty.settingsForm.password,NotEmpty.password,NotEmpty.java.lang.String,NotEmpty]; arguments [org.springframework.context.support.DefaultMessageSourceResolvable: codes [settingsForm.password,password]; arguments []; default message [password]]; default message [may not be empty] As you can see the default message is "may not be empty" instead of my message "This field should not be empty". I do get my correct message if I inject the messageSource into a controller and output this: messageSource.getMessage("NotEmpty", new Object [] {"password"}, "default empty message", null); So why isn't the validation using my messages.properties? I'm running Spring 3.1.1. Thanks!

    I am trying to get history.js to work in Internet Explorer because I need history.pushState() to work. I have read over the instructions on GitHub (https://github.com/balupton/History.js/) and have tried implementing it, but havent had any success.     I can't get line-height on a text input to work on Firefox 3.5.8/(Mac). Edit: Updated the test code, to compare line-height vs. padding technique. Padding works on all above browsers except IE8. Whaat? I can't test on FF/3.5.8 anymore, could someone please report the result from this browser on any plattform? I'm now thinking this is a Firefox 3.5.8 issue, plattform independent.

  • CSS 100 percent height body and element

    I am having an issue making one of my elements 100% within an overall layout that is 100%. I have tried different positioning solutions and I either end up with hidden content the floats behind the footer at the bottom, or the content ends up going behind the footer, and carrys on after the footer.     Hello, Specifications: MySQL 4.1+ I've certain situation that requires certain result set from MySQL query, let's see the current query first & then ask my question: SELECT thread.dateline AS tdateline, post.dateline AS pdateline, MIN(post.dateline) FROM thread AS thread LEFT JOIN post AS post ON(thread.threadid = post.threadid) LEFT JOIN forum AS forum ON(thread.forumid = forum.forumid) WHERE post.postid != thread.firstpostid AND thread.open = 1 AND thread.visible = 1 AND thread.replycount >= 1 AND post.visible = 1 AND (forum.options & 1) AND (forum.options & 2) AND (forum.options & 4) AND forum.forumid IN(1,2,3) GROUP BY post.threadid ORDER BY tdateline DESC, pdateline ASC As you can see, mainly I need to select dateline of threads from 'thread' table, in addition to dateline of the second post of each thread, that's all under the conditions you see in the WHERE CLAUSE. Since each thread has many posts, and I need only one result per thread, I've used GROUP BY CLAUSE for that purpose. This query will return only one post's dateline with it's related unique thread. My questions are: How to limit returned threads per each forum!? Suppose I need only 5 threads -as a maximum- to be returned for each forum declared in the WHERE CLAUSE 'forum.forumid IN(1,2,3)', how can this be achieved. Is there any recommendations for optimizing this query (of course after solving the first point)? Notes: I prefer not to use sub-queries, but if it's the only solution available I'll accept it. Double queries not recommended. I'm sure there's a smart solution for this situation. Appreciated advice in advance :)

Should I add a separate column to my dataset to record whether the data points are within the confidence bands? Can you provide an example please?   • Drawing line graphics leads Flash to spiral out of control!

    Hi, I'm having problems with some AS3 code that simply draws on a Sprite's Graphics object. The drawing happens as part of a larger procedure called on every ENTER_FRAME event of the stage. Flash neither crashes nor returns an error. Instead, it starts running at 100% CPU and grabs all the memory that it can, until I kill the process manually or my computer buckles under the pressure when it gets up to around 2-3 GB. This will happen at a random time, and without any noticiple slowdown beforehand. WTF? Has anyone seen anything like this? PS: I used to do the drawing within a MOUSE_MOVE event handler, which brought this problem on even faster. PPS: I'm developing on Linux, but reproduced the same problem on Windows.
