• Time Machine Server on Fedora

  I was just wondering if anyone knew how to/or knew of a good guide to setting up mac Time Machine backup server on a fedora 17 machine. I recently ran into an issue with my HDD and lost all of my data, so I don't want it to ever happen again, as it was quite traumatising, haha! I just want to be able to back all of my data up on my fedora machine from my mac, at scheduled times when I connect to my home network. If anyone could help, it would be fantastic, I searched around on google, but all of the ones I found were for older distros. Thanks guys!

• Behaviour of disabling "Allow non-administrators to receive notifications" GPO

  Hi everyone, As the title suggests, I'm trying to figure out the specific behaviour of the following GPO when disabled: Administrative Templates Windows Components Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications We've just started using WSUS, and have added a few machines for testing. At the moment, this is set to Enabled. The problem with this setting is it seems to allow users to opt out of certain updates if they deselect the checkbox after hitting custom install. My main concern with disabling this setting is this: Does it stop non-admins from getting the installs deployed to them? My guess would be that it will just install them silently at the set scheduled time, suppressing any prompts and ensuring they don't get the opportunity to cancel them (this is what I want). My worry is that non-admin users will never get updates pushed to them unless an admin goes and logs on to their machine (not what I want, and seems like a silly situation to be in).   I have a wireless printer which is always on, and an always on fanless linux server. Looking at the mprinter project on Kickstarter I started to wonder if there is an app somewhere in the internet already that will allow to prepare an automated daily printout based on some settings. things to be printed could include - weather forecast for my locations, todo`s scheduled for that day, a "quote of a day" or "word of the day", stats from google analytics for my site, and many more ... I would set a printout at 6:15 every work day so its on my printer when I am already up, having a coffee. anyone knows something that can be used for such purpose? While I know this can be done by combining the power of TeX, cron and a script language to manage the dynamic part of the PDF I believe this is a use case someone has already addressed.

• Text template or tool for documentation of computer configurations

  I regularly write and update technical documentation which will be used to set up a new virtual machine, or to have a lookup for system dependencies in networks with around 20-50 (server-side) computers. At the moment I use OpenOffice Writer with text tables, and create one document per intranet domain. To improve this documentation, I would like to collect some examples to identify areas where my documents can be improved, regarding general structure and content, to make it easy to read and use not only for me but also for technical staff, helpdesk etc. Are there simple text templates (for example for OpenOffice Writer) or tools (maybe database-driven) for structured documentation of a computer configuration? Such a template / tool should provide required and optional configuration sections, like 'operating system', 'installed services', 'mapped network drives', 'scheduled tasks', 'remote servers', 'logon user account', 'firewall settings', 'hard disk size' ... It is not so much low-level hardware docs but more infrastructure / integration information in these documents (no BIOS settings, MAC addresses).

• Merge Publication Data Partition Snapshot generation

  I have a merge publication in SQL 2008 R2 with data partitions and I am wondering when I should generate the snapshots for the data partitions. I get an error sometimes when bringing a new subscribe online related to the partition snapshot being out of date and I am wondering if this has to do with the publication snapshot being scheduled at the same time as the partition snapshots. I'm not really sure how the partition snapshot gets generated, but it appears maybe it is getting generated before the publication snapshot. If this is the case how should I be scheduling the partition snapshots to get generated? Should I set them to run x number of minutes after the publication snapshot? this seems kind of poor to do in case the publication snapshot takes awhile or fails. It seems to me the publication snapshot should just run the data partition snapshot agents when it is done if this is the case.

• btrfs won't run from cron

  I'm trying to set up a cron job to create a btrfs subvolume snapshot of my root partition. The command works perfectly if I run it from the command line, but nothing happens at the scheduled cron time. I've tried piping to logger and redirecting stdout/stderr to file, and not only is there no content, the file I'm logging to isn't even created. The cron command I have is as follows: 0 0 * * * /sbin/btrfs subvolume snapshot / "/snapshots/$(date +%Y-%m-%d)" I've tried prefixing it with /bin/bash, but that makes no difference. What am I missing?

• yum update with shared cache

  We've got a big batch of RHEL6 machines that are due for patching, and for some reason the process here does not involve a local repo. I'm new here, I've asked why, ["it just didn't work"] and I don't have enough time to make it work before the window that's already scheduled. So the usual method is to install yum-downloadonly and run yum update --downloadonly --downloaddir=/mnt/cifs_share and then yum update /mnt/cifs_share/*.rpm which just does not look right to me since not all of these machines have the same set of installed packages. The method I tried today was mounting the share to /var/cache/yum/x86_64/6Server/rhel-x86_64-server-6/packages/ which worked, but then yum automatically deleted everything once it finished. I've looked over the yum man page, but I don't see any flag I can feed it to stop it from deleting everything, nor a flag like up2date's --tmpdir=/mnt/cifs_share. Can anyone out there help me kludge this together until I can get a local repository working?

• Is there a log showing why a Windows server did not restart SQL Server after a reboot?

  Our server was rebooted after a Windows Update scheduled for 1am, but after the restart SQL Server did not start up, so our websites were unable to display. Usually this process happens with no manual intervention. Is there a log somewhere which might indicate the reason why the Windows startup process did not call SQL Server to get going again? I've looked in the Event Viewer (Application Log) and SQL's own file E:\MSSQL\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG* but these only contain records of successful startup operations....nothing mentions a failed attempt to start a service or anything like that.

• SharePoint Calendar - Start time after a certain hour

  I am working with SharePoint Calendar list to create a shift schedule for a team (End user side of things, I am not writing code). I have added a few custom columns to the Calendar List Item. I have the list exported to excel where I have a Pivot table set up so I can see a summary of the different columns - I can see the person's name (From the title column), total hours they are scheduled for (separated into weekdays and weekends based on a custom column I added). What I need is a way to check the start time of the shift to determine if it is a Day shift (starts at 7am), Eve shift (starts at 3pm), or a Night shift (starts at 10pm). So, when creating a new calculated column I would assume the function I need would go something like "=If([StartDate]...." but I am not sure on the rest. Anyone know how I would write that function?

• Make Outlook run rules on non-inbox folders automatically

  I currently have my Outlook setup with Gmail. I have a couple of rules that I have defined which run on different folders (lables) in my account. I have filters already setup in GMail which will make emails skip the inbox and put them in the respective folders. Whenever I get a new email, in those folders, my rules are not run (they are just for setting categories). I have to run them manually. I think its because the emails don't come to the inbox first but directly into the folder. Is there anyway to make outlook run rules automatically on those folders? A scheduled run should also be fine.

• App pool gets stuck on reset and takes .net pages out

  Several times after our app pool has been told to reset, it gets stuck, the .net pages go down and the following error appears in the application event log: Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be created. Error: 0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect. Our app pool is scheduled to automatically reset at 4am, so the errors stay up until we manually restart the app pool. Has anyone else encountered the error or know of any solutions? Research has suggested it's a permissions issue, but the permissions don't change and the error happens infrequently. The site has no other permission based problems and the app pool identity has permission where needed.

• How can I stop ntbackup requiring my new password every time I'm forced to change my Windows passwor

  I have a scheduled job that runs each night using ntbackup which copies a folder on my HDD to a network share. The problem is that every time I'm required to change my Windows password I have to remember to change it in ntbackup aswell, otherwise the backup fails silently i.e. I get no warning that the backup isn't being done. Is there a way to schedule this job so it will automatically pick up my new Windows password, or somehow not be tied to my main login? My user account type is Debugger, not full Administrator, so I'm not sure if that would restrict me in any way, e.g. still forcing a four-weekly password change on a dedicated user account for this. The PC runs XP SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain.

  I need to copy a file from a Windows 2003 server to a WebDAV folder (on the same server, if it matters). This operation will be performed via a batch script executed via Scheduled Tasks. I've enabled the WebClient service on the server. So far I've determined that I can do it like this: net use x: http://host/path copy c:\path\myfile.txt x: net use x: /delete 1) Is there a simpler way than creating a temporary mapped drive? Will it work via a batch file when no user is logged in? 2) Is there anything I should know about enabling the WebClient service on my server? Previously it was disabled, which I assume is default.

The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog. • How to automatically print the contents of a folder in OS X?

  I would like to be able to set up a folder on my Mac, where I could dump files and have them be automatically sent to the default printer. This way I would be able to print files at home when I'm not physically at home, using something like Dropbox. It wouldn't have to be real-time; i.e., a scheduled job that checks the folder every so often would be acceptable. What's the easiest approach? Automator? Applescript? Cron job?

• Server 2003 Filter mobile devices via MAC

  At one of my client's sites I need to keep my users unauthorized devices off the wireless. They all know the SSID and Password because many of them have laptops that need the wireless. I'm running out of IP address's and we have sent out numerous emails asking them to stay off, but like most users they ignore IT's email. I'm currently running Server 2003 as the GC/DC (but have 2008 servers in place) and 2 Netgear WNAP320. I've seen several posts similar to what I'm looking for but they seem to deal with Linux. My question is how do I go about doing this without migrating (scheduled for the end of the year) to a new server and is it possible to do this within Server 2003? Thanks msindle

• Crontab stopped unexpectedly

It didn't run as scheduled after a capistrano deploy, didn't get a mail either. It worked fine earlier, and I am unable to understand what wrong. The only change that was made was the deploy, but I think it should not affect the cron. I tried using pgrep cron to see if crons is working. It gives 904 as output. Could someone please help. Now, in 1yr the free expires. i went to the website http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/ where the pricing is but i didn't really get how to compute it. The price are in $ per Hours but i don't think that this means, if i need to have my application running 24h/365d i've to multiplay it for 8760, or do i have? because they write about usage, but how do i compute this value? if i've a website where people in total spend smt like 10 minutes a month and 1 where people spend 750hour a months i pay the same? i can't believe that is the same price. PS:if i've a scheduled task, does it affect the usage?

• VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?

• Moving files with batch files from one pc to a server, to a another pc - worried about disk corruption

  I use scheduled tasks that calls a batch file, that calls more batch files to move about three files from a pc, to a server, then to multiple other pcs. It all happens very quickly, as they are small files. Are there any pitfalls for how fast these transfers happen? I'm just mildly concerned about causing some disk corruption somehow. I use logic like 1. Call MapToPc if files exist then move file to folder on server. Disconnect 2. Call SendtoPCs If files exist (the files just moved to the server) then MapToPCs Move all files Disconnect All of this happens in about 2 secs or less. edit: this on windows 7, server 2003, xp respectively

• ionice idle is ignored

  I have been testing the ionice command for a while and the idle (3) mode seems to be ignored in most cases. My test is to run both command at the same time: du <big folder> ionice -c 3 du <another big folder> If I check both process in iotop I see no difference in the percentage of io utilization for each process. To provide more information about the CFQ scheduler I'm using a 3.5.0 linux kernel. I started doing this test because I'm experimenting a system lag each time a daily cron job updatedb.mlocate is executed in my Ubuntu 12.10 machine. If you check the /etc/cron.daily/mlocate file you realize that the command is executed like: /usr/bin/ionice -c3 /usr/bin/updatedb.mlocate Also, the funny thing is that whenever my system for some reason starts using swap memory, the updatedb.mlocate io process is been scheduled faster than kswapd0 process, and then my system gets stuck. • Windows 7 System Image Restore to SSD - SSD not detected?

  I recently bought a new SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 120GB) as a replacement for my laptop HDD . I created a System Image on an external drive using the Win 7 backup and restore tool and then restored this image to the SSD using the Win 7 disk. AHCI is enabled in Win 7 and the BIOS, but it seems that windows is not detecting the disk as an SSD because, in the defragger, the disk is still available for defragging. Prefetch and Superfetch were also still enabled. I have manually disabled scheduled defragging, prefetch and superfetch. I have also checked that TRIM is enabled using: fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and the result is '0' (it is). Performance seems ok, but not quite as fast as I expected. Was restoring from a win7 generated system image a mistake? Am I getting optimal SSD performance?

  I've known quite along while about performance monitor on Windows. I have decided now to create a scheduled performance monitoring of my entire system so I can find bottlenecks for future improvements. So as you can imagine this is going to run 24/7 so I can identify peak utilization. With performance monitor on Windows 7 for example where are the logs stored (c:\perfmon)? Is there a log size? Even better is the a website that can get me up to speed with scheduling and best practices of perfmon? (I don't need an explanation of what I can monitor)

• Forcing Windows to be 'awake' during certain hours?

  I'm running Windows 7 and have the power options currently set up to put the machine to sleep after 2 hours of inactivity. Is there any way to force the machine not to sleep between certain hours, or to automatically wake up? I'm assuming this can't be done directly from within the Windows power settings, but is there a third party utility (preferably free) that could take care of this? I've got backups scheduled every morning at 3-4am, and these don't run if the machine is suspended, so I just need to make sure that the everything is powered up during this time.
