• How to Get All the Windows 8 Editions on One Install Disk

  There are a lot of different versions of Windows, but you probably didn’t know that short of the Enterprise edition, the disc or image that you own contains all versions for that architecture. Read on to see how we can use them to make a universal Windows 8 install disc. Things You Will Need A x86 Version of Windows 8 A x64 Version of Windows 8 A x86 Version of Windows 8 Enterprise A x64 Version of Windows 8 Enterprise A Windows 8 PC Note: While we will use all the images above you don’t really need the Enterprise Edition. You could always leave out parts of the tutorial if you know what you are doing, if you are not comfortable with that and still want to follow through you could always grab the Enterprise evaluation images that are available for free to the public, on MSDN. Getting Started To get started you will need to Download the Windows 8 ADK from Microsoft. Once downloaded go ahead and install it, you will only need the Deployment tools so be sure to uncheck the rest of the options. Lastly you will also need to create the following folder structure on the root of your C:\ drive to make things a bit easier. C:\Windows8Root C:\Windows8Root\x86 C:\Windows8Root\x64 C:\Windows8Root\Enterprisex86 C:\Windows8Root\Enterprisex64 C:\Windows8Root\Temp C:\Windows8Root\Final OK lets get started. Making The Image The first thing we need to do is create a base image, so mount the x86 version of Windows 8 and copy its files to: C:\Windows8Root\Final Now move the install.wim file from: C:\Windows8Root\Final\sources To: C:\Windows8Root\x86 Next go ahead and copy the install.wim file from the other 3 images, Windows 8 x64, Windows 8 Enterprise x86 and Windows 8 Enterprise x64 to the respective folders in Windows8Root, the install.wim file can be located at: D:\sources\install.wim Note: The above assumes that the images are always mounted at drive D. Remember that each install.wim is different so don’t copy them to the wrong directories or the rest of the tutorial wont work. Next switch to the Metro Start Screen and open the Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment. Note: If you are not a local administrator on your PC, you will need to right-click on it and choose to run it as an administrator. You will need to call it: EI.cfg Then edit it to look like the following: The last thing we need to do is work some magic to get Windows Media Center added to the WMC editions of Windows 8. For that I have written a little script to make it easier for everybody, you can grab it here. Once you have downloaded it extract it. In order to use it right-click in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, and open an elevated command prompt. Then go ahead and paste the following into the command prompt window. powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -File C:\Users\Taylor\Documents\HTGWindows8Converter.ps1 Note: You will need to replace the path to the script, another thing to note is that if the path you replace it with has spaces you will need to enclose the path in quotes. The script should kick off straight away and has some progress bars you can watch while it does its thing. Half way through another Window will pop open, which will start creating your final ISO image. • What's the best way to manage list item sort order with Drag & Drop UI?

  I have a list of Students that I should display to user on a web page in tabular format. The items are stored in DB along with SortOrder information. On the web page, user can rearrange the list order by dragging and dropping the items to their desired sort order, similar to this post. Below is a screenshot of my test page. In the above example, each row has sort order info attached to it. When I drop John Doe (Student Id 10) above the Student Id 1 row, the list order should now be: 2, 10, 1, 8, 11. What's the optimistic (less resource hungry) way to store and update Sort Order information? My only idea for now is, for every change in the list's sort order, every object's SortOrder value should be updated, which in my opinion is very resource hungry. Just FYI: I might have at most 25 rows in my table.

• Empty APN list on your Android phone? Restart the phone to fix it

  Today I tried to connect to internet on my Google Galaxy Nexus running on 4.2.2 using Cellular Data connection and it failed. Tried reaching customer care representative to figure out why data connection is not working, but the robots (Interactive Voice Response systems) never allowed me to reach a human. After digging through the settings I found empty list of APN (Access Point Names) is the reason for not able to connect to internet. Not sure what caused APN list to vanish but I tried to create a new one that matches with the settings required for AT & T mobile. To my surprise I found that the newly created APN is also not shown in the APN list. Well there is something wrong with the phone – my APN’s are not shown as well as the newly created one is also not displayed. A simple Google search on this problem shown many forum discussions list and the solution to resolve the issue is to restart the phone. As soon as I restarted my phone the APN list is automatically populated and I’m able to connect to internet on my mobile.

  I have a long list of bugs in my launchpad account but some bugs I set to being affected by and being subscribed to are not showing up in that list. Even when I change the options of bugs to show I don't get these bugs.First I thought these were bugs being set to 'wishlist' but some of them are showing up in the list. Does anyone else know that he/she is subscribed to a bug he/she doesn't find in his bug list? And maybe there's also someone who knows how to fix this.

• How to determine the end of list has been reached?

  I'm trying to animate my object according to a set of recorded values from kinect skeleton stream by saving the (x,y,z) stream from the skeletal data into a list and then set my objects x and y position from the x,y of the list. However, once the list end has been reached it starts to animate again from the start. I don't want that - I just want the model position to keep going in the positive X direction. Is there any way I can check if end of the list has been reached and to just update the model position in x direction?   I have a set of custom commands I run on my computers after I install them. How do I make Ubuntu check for updates every 4 weeks and install them automatically on check? I would need this done via command line so I can set it up for usual users when I set up their computers. The first command will make the update manager check for updates every 2 weeks because they not always come so much and to save the bandwidth of the Ubuntu servers. I also need to set it so that users don't need to click to install updates since it's tiring every time I help a friend set up a computer.

• Why does the BADSIG/"Untrusted sources" error recur forever?

  On at least a dozen occasions, I've spent 2-3 hours figuring out how to get Ubuntu 11.10-12.10 to either update or acquire software from software center, or both. I want to fix whatever is causing the BADSIG problem once and for all; I've wasted so much time trying to get this to work well enough that I can rely on it, but the same problem comes back after a couple weeks of normal updates and software center usage. Don't refer me to a standard posted solution on the web---whatever it is, I've used it more times than you have. The question isn't whether I can get it to work right this afternoon. I can. The question is what is causing the problem to recur regularly across 3 releases. Notice: I use this computer 4-5 hours per week and I do little on it. PDFs, Latex, FireFox, Mendeley, and that's it. I don't constantly install new software, and I don't fiddle with things unnecessarily.

  Possible Duplicate: How to list all installed packages? I am on a "grown" system. My initial setup was using Ubuntu 9.04. But now with the 12.04 Update I got stuck. My System is freezing or wired errors occour. I want to reinstall my system on a clean partition. How can I get a list of the packages I installed in my system? I want a list with the base packages not all the dependecies, so I can install all packages on my clean install again with the correct (maybe new) dependencies. I other words: I want to retrieve a list of all packages installed with apt-get directly. Not the ones it additionally installs with these packages. Thanks!

• CSS: Horizontal, comma-separated list with fixed <li> width

  Hello, I would like to achieve the following structure: [gfhtfg..., kgjrfg..., asd, mrhgf, ] ^-------^ ^-------^ ^-------^ ^-------^ X X X X (X = a fixed length) I've got a <div> with a fixed length, and inside it an horizontal, comma-separated list (ul) of links. The <li> elements should have a fixed width, and so if the links exceed a fixed length an ellipsis will be shown (using the text-overflow property). I know two ways to make a list horizontal. One is using display: inline and the other using the float property. With the first approach, I can't set a fixed width because the CSS specification doesn't allow setting the width of inline elements. The second approach creates a mess :O Setting float on the <a> element, intending to limit the width there, separates it from the commas. There are no browser-compatibility issues, I only have to support WebKit. • Passing a list of files to javac

  How can I get the javac task to use an existing fileset? In my build.xml I have created several filesets to be used in multiple places throughout build file. Here is how they have been defined: <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.all"> <include name = "**/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.examples"> <include name = "**/Examples/**/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.tests"> <include name = "**/Tests/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.project"> <include name = "**/*.java" /> <exclude name = "**/Examples/**/*.java" /> <exclude name = "**/Tests/**/*.java" /> </fileset> I have also used macrodef to compile the java files so the javac task does not need to be repeated multiple times. The macro looks like this: <macrodef name="compile"> <attribute name="sourceref"/> <sequential> <javac srcdir = "${src}" destdir = "${build}" classpathref = "classpath" includeantruntime = "no" debug = "${debug}"> <filelist dir="." files="@{sourceref}" /> <-- email is about this </javac> </sequential> What I'm trying to do is compile only the classes that are needed for specific targets not all the targets in the source tree. And do so without having to specify the files every time. Here are how the targets are defined: <target name = "compile-examples" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.examples}" /> </target> <target name = "compile-project" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.project}" /> </target> <target name = "compile-tests" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.tests}" /> </target> As you can see each target specifies the java files to be compiled as a simi-colon separated list of absolute file names. The only problem with this is that javac does not support filelist. It also does not support fileset, path or pathset. I've tried using but it treats the list as a single file name. Another thing I tried is sending the reference directly (not using toString) and using but include does not have a ref attribute. SO THE QUESTION IS: How do you get the javac task to use a reference to a fileset that was defined in another part of the build file? I'm not interested in solutions that cause me to have multiple javac tasks. Completely re-writting the macro is acceptable. Changes to the targets are also acceptable provided redundant code between targets is kept to a minimum. p.s. Another problem is that fileset wants a comma separated list. I've only done a brief search for a way to convert semi-colons to commas and haven't found a way to do that. p.p.s. Sorry for the yelling but some people are too quick to post responses that don't address the subject.

• IE7 rendering bug: Heading before a floated list

  Can somebody please explain this IE7 bug to me? It occurs in Standards and Quirks mode rendering, it does not occur in Firefox, Chrome or IE8 (though switching the rendering engine via IE8 developer tools will provoke it). There's an unexplained gap between the <div> and the <ul>. Now do one of the following: Uncomment the CSS rule for <h1>. The gap disappears and the list is rendered tight to the <div>, but also very close to the <h1>. Alternatively, uncomment the CSS rule for <ul>. Now a narrow blue border is rendered above the <ul>, but the gap disappears. My questions: How can the <h1> margin (I suppose any block level element with a defined margin will do) affect the space below the list? Can I prevent this from happening without having to set header margins to 0 or messing with the <ul> borders (setting border-width: 0; does not work BTW)? I suppose it is connected to the <ul> having no width because it has only floated children. Maybe someone with more insight into IE7 peculiarities than I have can explain what the rendering engine is doing here. Thanks!

• Select list shrinks in size horizontally when empty

  Hello, I have two select list boxes and i can move items back and forth between them using the forward (--) and backward (<--) button. However, if there are no items in a select list, it shrinks in size horizontally. Any way to keep the select list a fixed size, irrespective of whether it contains any options or not ? • jquery css menu not selecting the active link

  What is wrong with this and how could I fix it. I have css menu (horizontal) that I want the background and font to be changed when one of the items is selected. I found another post that gave me some jquery code to help make it work, and I thought I had it coded right, but when I click on an item to change its class it adds the class, but the background and font stay the same?   So I was beating my head against a wall for a while before it dawned on me. I have some code that saves a list of names into a text file ala ... System.IO.File.WriteAllLines(dlg.FileName, this.characterNameMasterList.Distinct().ToArray()); The character names can contain special characters. These names come from the wow armory at www.wowarmory.com There are about 26000 names or so saved in the .txt file. The names get saved to the .txt file just fine. I wrote another application that reads these names from that .txt file using this code // download the names from the db var webNames = this.DownloadNames("character"); // filter names and get ones that need to be added to the db var localNames = new List<string>(System.IO.File.ReadAllLines(dlg.FileName)); foreach (var name in webNames) { if (localNames.Contains(name.Trim())) localNames.Remove(name); } return localNames; ... the code downloads a list of names from my website that are already in the db. Then reads the local .txt file and singles out every name that is not yet in the db so it can later add it. The names that get read from the .txt file also get read just fine with no problems. The problem comes in when removing names from the localNames list. localNames is a List type. As soon as localNames.Remove(name) gets called any names in the list that had special characters in them would get corrupted and be converted into ? characters. Has anyone else had this problem? I also used .NET Reflector to disassemble/inspect the list.remove and list.RemoveAt code and it appear to be calling some external Copy function. Aside from the fact that this is prob not the best way to get a unique list of items from 2 lists am I missing something or should be aware of when using the List.Remove methods ? I am running windows 7 vs2010 and my app is set for .net 4 (no client profile )

When you scroll up and down the list maybe you end up filling all of them. When I tried the commented out line (holder.avatar.setImageBitmap...) the app sometimes force closes with "only the thread that created the view can request...". But only sometimes. Any idea how I can fix this? Either option.

  For a class assignment, we can't use any of the languages bultin types, so I'm stuck with my own list. • Java: Is there a way to efficiently insert or remove many elements from the middle of a LinkedList?

  I was expecting to find this in Java's LinkedList, since the point of linked lists is to be able to efficiently insert (and remove) anywhere (assuming you have some kind of pointer to the location where you want to insert or remove). I'm not finding anything in the API though. Am I overlooking something? The closest thing I can find to this are the add and remove method in ListIterator. This has some limitations though. In particular, other iterators become invalid as soon as the underlying LinkedList is modified via remove, according to the API. • Is there a way to efficiently yield every file in a directory containing millions of files?

  I'm aware of os.listdir, but as far as I can gather, that gets all the filenames in a directory into memory, and then returns the list. What I want, is a way to yield a filename, work on it, and then yield the next one, without reading them all into memory. Is there any way to do this? I worry about the case where filenames change, new files are added, and files are deleted using such a method. Some iterators prevent you from modifying the collection during iteration, essentially by taking a snapshot of the state of the collection at the beginning, and comparing that state on each move operation. If there is an iterator capable of yielding filenames from a path, does it raise an error if there are filesystem changes (add, remove, rename files within the iterated directory) which modify the collection? There could potentially be a few cases that could cause the iterator to fail, and it all depends on how the iterator maintains state. Using S.Lotts example: filea.txt fileb.txt filec.txt Iterator yields filea.txt. During processing, filea.txt is renamed to filey.txt and fileb.txt is renamed to filez.txt. When the iterator attempts to get the next file, if it were to use the filename filea.txt to find it's current position in order to find the next file and filea.txt is not there, what would happen? It may not be able to recover it's position in the collection. Similarly, if the iterator were to fetch fileb.txt when yielding filea.txt, it could look up the position of fileb.txt, fail, and produce an error. If the iterator instead was able to somehow maintain an index dir.get_file(0), then maintaining positional state would not be affected, but some files could be missed, as their indexes could be moved to an index 'behind' the iterator. This is all theoretical of course, since there appears to be no built-in (python) way of iterating over the files in a directory. There are some great answers below, however, that solve the problem by using queues and notifications. Edit: The OS of concern is Redhat. My use case is this: Process A is continuously writing files to a storage location. Process B (the one I'm writing), will be iterating over these files, doing some processing based on the filename, and moving the files to another location. Edit: Definition of valid: Adjective 1.
