• Creating PDF Invoices - Are there any templating solutions?

  Our company is looking to integrate invoices into a new system we are developing. We require some a solution to create a layout of the invoice and then convert to pdf. We have considered just laying out the invoice in html/css then converting to pdf. We have also considered using SVG-PDf conversion. Both of these solutions integrate well into our existing templating language used for our web application. Historically we have been a Microsoft based business and used Crystal Reports for such a task but we are looking an open source Linux solution for this project. Does any one have any suggestions of an approach or technology we could use for such a task?

• Does an updated 'vimtutor' exist?

  vim comes with a nice built-in interactive tutorial. You can access this tutorial by just running: $ vimtutor It is very easy to use because it creates working cases for basic commands. Is there a more advanced tutorial? Has any one though to build one to help uses take their VIM skills to the next level. Most tutorial and cheat-sheet sites out there for vim only show commands but not necessarily specific uses and examples. Is there an advance tutorial out there? Is this the type of project that could be an open source document that everyone can add examples to? Like a Vim Interactive Wiki or similar to the RegEx sites that have the built in regex testers.

• ubuntu 12.04 desktop Error: unknown command 'gfxmode'. Pressing any key continues

  Premise: linux noobie here, I have the same issue as OP: fresh 12.04 desktop, changed grub with grub customizer, now I get a: unknown command 'gfxmode' press ...etc was asked to "re-post" this question and link to this thread which I refer to above. I have tried what Tarek said, and nothing seems to work, I find two lines with gfxmode: function gfxmode { gfxmode \$linux_gfx_mode Note: not sure if it matter but in the error the two single quotes before gfxmode are not the same, the first is a slanted quote mark, the second (after gfxmode) is a straight one. I commented out the whole line, I tried to add 'set' before gfxmode, neither did any difference. I found another place that said to remove the line from another file 40_custom, but I checked and those files do not contain anything relating to the line we are looking for: gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode Not sure what I am missing, but the file linux.save has recently appeared when searching for the line. Not sure if its just a temp file of some kind. In any case I cannot seem to get it, what am I missing? Thanks! P.S. sorry for any messups in form :)

• Is git suitable for one developer without server

  I am a single developer without another computer to backup my projects on. I'm looking into source controls and I came across git but all the setup tutorials are targeted to an external server. I used to use SourceGear Vault, but seeing that git is getting alot of attention, I might as well familiarize myself with it. I do not always have internet access. Is Git suitable for me? Are there any guidelines to writing good, but not too specific, documentation and examples on how to use open source code. Often, I find good libraries, but the only documentation is in the code, making it much harder to work with. A general overview, example usage, a tutorial, and basic project layout / goals seem to be a few popular options. However, if it's a single-developer project and just starting out, the luxury of writing all that isn't there. Which is the best advice for starting documentation of a project?

• CMS for SmartPhones

  The company I work for has a document management and retrieval system. We are noticing employees use more their smartphones than their laptops, but they cannot access the document management system. So, we are thinking about a CMS, with persistent storage, perhaps developed in Java. I just started looking into Jease and dotCMS, and also checked here those recommendations in questions like "Best Open Source Java CMS", etc I find some CMSs too bulky for simple stuff like what we need which is basically document download/edit/upload, and some simple collaboration and personalization stuff. Smartphones of choice in our workforce are Nokia, Blackberry and IPhone, The question is: are there java based with persistent db CMSs aimed at Smartphones right now? I need replication of the complete database and run website offline.

• Good IM/Chat solution for pasting code

  We've got several distributed developers working together on a couple of projects. We've been using Skype to host chats with all the developers, and it works okay except for one thing: It REALLY mangles any code we copy and paste into the chats -- especially the whitespace in Python. This question has tons of opinions about chat clients & servers, but no one has much to say about pasting in code.   I would like to experiment with machine generated levels for a 3D game. I'm very open which game this will be. I just like the idea to run through a generated map. • how to add language support to android

  hello i hope someone put me on the right direction with my problem i want to work on supporting my language, specially the writing on android we use Arabic characters with little modification ( like parsi, urdu etc).. i was hoping android has fully supported Arabic , then i would make changes to work with my language. but even 2.2 dosn't support Arabic . it just show Arabic characters and it is not connected. that is "????? " is displayed "? ? ? ? ?". some individuals have made Arabic support on CyanogenMod ROM's for some HTC phones, but they would not tell how they made it. I'v got the android source code, i want to know where to start, where to make changes , what is the library that handle fonts , shaping engine etc .. ps : android.com and other android related google groups are blocked in my country.

  I'm particularly looking for input from managers of ongoing C++ projects: Have you already adopted C++0x? If so, what has your experience been like? If you haven't adopted C++0x yet, are you planning to? If so, what is your timeline (in rough terms)? Are there any obstacles that are holding you back from adopting C++0x? Perhaps you are waiting for your favourite compiler or IDE to catch up? • Trace large C++ code base?

  Problem: I have just inherited this 200K LOC source code base. There's only a small part of it I need (and I want to rip all else out). What I would like to do is to be able to: 1) run the program a few times 2) have something (here's where you come in) record which lines of code gets executed 3) then rip out all the irrelevant lines of code I realize this has "problems" in the forms of "different args will take different paths"; but for my needs, it's very specific, and I just want something ot get me started on the right line of for ripping stuff out (I'll fine tune those special cases later). • Multiple Rails forks with separate designs and layouts

  I have a Rails project that is basically a simple web app for a membership-based organization. We've open sourced the code on Github for the web app so that others can use it, but have a licensed design/layout that the original organization is going to use. This layout cannot be open sourced. I was wondering if others have run into the situation where you have an open-source Rails app with a non-OS design. My initial thought is to put app/views in .gitignore, and to have anyone forking the code add their own views directory, perhaps including an app/views_default directory with a web-app-theme layout or something else to get people running. Is this the best option (realizing that there are other files such as JavaScript, CSS, etc that come with the layout that must also be ignored). Does anyone have some good thoughts or pointers on this?

Reading code is important -- how does one learn how to write excellent code without having read excellent code? But, sadly, while great writers, of fiction and non-fiction, all spend a great deal of time reading stuff, we, programmers, seem to avoid it like the plague. Worse still, programming books usually go the same way. They might show a pattern or a style, but they often avoid showing good, complex code, and helping one go through it. There are exceptions, of course. I hope. So, with that in mind, what books are to be found which help one learn how to read code?

  Can you tell me when I can see a some opensource project (only project on C++ language), which is simple graphic editor, ?ontaining following primitive (for example): an ellipse, a rectangle, a line. And desirable, that to be able to group this primitive in one primitive (for example, Word Grouping - Group). Composite pattern use is desirable in this project. • Libraries for making a voice chat application

Our plan is to use a pre-made library just for this purpose, but we haven't found any good one after days of searching the internet, so I thought I would consider a question here! So the question is: What library / project do you recommend? We are deadly serious with this, so it needs to be a good working one. Preferable an open-source one as well. We have been looking at some XMPP libraries and projects, but none seems to be up-to-date, tested and well-documented.

• Windows partition UNKNOWN after Ubuntu installation attempt at dual boot - How to fix?

  The idea was to install Win 7 and Ubuntu with dual boot. However, after installation, Gparted shows a /dev/sda1 as an 'unknown' filesystem and its size is 278 GB. All my windows files, data are in this partition. THen, there's /dev/sda2 with 'EXT4' filesystem (size-9.54 GB) - created during Ubuntu install. Then, there's /dev/sda3 with 'extended' filesystem (size- 10.5 GB) - created during Ubuntu install. Then, there's /dev/sda5 with 'linux swap' filesystem (size- 2 GB) - created during Ubuntu install. Then, there's /dev/sda6 with 'ext4' filesystem (size- 8.5 GB) - created during Ubuntu install. MY questions are: What exactly does this Gparted output above mean? How to recover my previous Windows 7 installation that's in /dev/sda1 (NTFS). I have some important files I need. Also, I had a PGP encryption on the disk before installing Ubuntu. Now, it just boots straight into Ubuntu... why? How to uninstall Ubuntu (the Try ubuntu and uninstall did not work. the boot-repair did not work) I have read other topics but noone has provided a proper step by step answer to how to recover my 278GB WIndows partition. The testdisk step by step procedure did not work. It says the NTFS disk is unrecognized.

• How do I take a copy of my working copy to share with others?

  I did a ton of changes to our code and before I commit, I would like a friend to review. Is there a way with SVN to take a copy of my working copy (to bundle everything in a package) and apply the changes I have made so far to another machines without having to commit? In the past, with another source control system, I was able to do the following to "pack" and "unpack" my changes.   Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any free Open Source software wich demonstrates multitrack recording support? Now I could go on and write notifiaction events but I was wondering if there is a smarter way to do it -i.e. simply define the sources as the Items of each Item FatherClass posses

I downloaded the sources, started to look around, read this, forget that... Then I thought to myself: this can't be true. This is 21st century there must be some tool which would help me to understand the code, perhaps some kind of IDE or "code navigator". What flows from here to where, this typedef struct is just interface to that private type, this function is just #define from above, function called in this file is defined in that file, ... you get the idea. • Getting back into C/C++ after several years

  While at university I started my first programming with ANSI C, before we moved onto Java later in the course. Now I would like to go back to (re)learning C and C++ again to allow me to contribute with open source projects and also to expand my CV and improve my career prospects. Currently I mostly program in VB.net (I know I know, I try to not do things the nasty way you can with this) and am slowly picking up C# as I get some time at work. I also use a bit of java for Android dev. While I realise just doing it is the best way to learn, my exercise ideas are usually either trivial or beyond my current skills. What are some good sources for this initial relearn, I intend to possibly start helping with Chromium as other people seem to think this a good place to get started in OS. Basically any help getting back into this would be appreciated.
